FORMWORK - INSPECTION & SAFETY
Taken from : Ambuja Technical  Literature Series - 35

INTRODUCTION :

Forms are the moulds and dies of concrete construction. They mould the concrete to the desired size and shape and control its alignment and position.
Formwork also carries the weight of freshly placed concrete and itself besides live load due to materials, equipment and workmen.
The objective of formwork builder are three-fold-Quality, Safety and Economy. Economy is a major concern since formwork costs may range anywhere from 25% to 60% of the cost of the concrete structure. Judgment in selection of materials and equipment, in planning fabrication and erection procedures, in scheduling reuse of forms and in deployment of trained and experienced manpower help save formwork cost and at the same time expedite the job. The Structural Engineer or the Architect can also contribute to help save formwork cost by keeping the requirement of formwork economy in mind when he is designing the structure. However, in order to achieve economy, quality and safety should not be sacrificed. Cutting corners in design and practice could be false economy as rectification of defective concrete may require expensive chipping and grinding.

REQUIREMENT OF FORMWORK:
The following are the essential requirements:
  • To obtain the required shape, size, finish, position and alignment of concrete members.
  • To have enough load carrying, or transferring capacity to take pressure or weight of fresh concrete and any other loads, without distortion, deflection, leakage, failure or danger to workmen.
  • To have design for quick erection and removal (stripping).
  • To handle easily using available equipment or manpower.
  • Joints between formwork must be tight enough to prevent leakage of grout.
  • To provide easy and safe access for concrete handling and placing.
  • To avoid damage to concrete or formwork itself while stripping.
