Functional Region
A central place and the surrounding places affected by it.
They are defined by a system of interactions.
Consider a bicycle wheel with a central axel in the middle of the wheel, which represents the center of all the activity.
The spokes of the wheel represent links to outside areas through transportation, communication and trade.

Functional Region ( nodal or polarized regions) are geographical areas which display certain criteria, but are composed of heterogeneous units – cities, town and villages- which are functionally interrelated
The functional relationships are revealed in the form of town, using socio-economic criteria like journey to work or shopping trips flow of perishable as well as non-perishable commodities, newspaper circulation. telephone calls etc.
