Four common Medical gas lines are used in hospitals
1.
Nitrous Oxide
2.
Oxygen
3.
Air
4.
suction / Vacuum
1.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide, or laughing gas, is used as an analgesic, and as an anesthetic for pre-operative procedures. Pressures are kept around 345 kPa, or 50 psi.
2.
Oxygen:
Oxygen is used when patients require supplemental oxygenation due to hypoxemia and hypoxia (insufficient oxygen in the blood). Pressures are kept around 380 kPa or 55 psi.
3.
Medical Air:
This is supplied by a specialized air compressor to patient care areas. Clean outside air is pressurized to around 380 kPa, or 55 psi, and brought inside to the patient.
4.
suction (Vacuum )
In medicine, devices are sometimes necessary to create suction. Suction may be used to clear the airway of blood, saliva, vomit, or other secretions so that a patient may breathe. System negative pressures is maintained in suction line
