Sans rich tradition
The rubber capital of Kerala, Kottayam is the nucleus of a vast region of plantations. It was also a major stopover on the 'spice route' to Alleppy and beyond, to Europe. With the British came the rubber plantations. Soon, Kottayam grew from a small principality to a major force, shaping modern-day Kerala.
There are not many problems exclusive to Kottayam like Ludhiana, Tiruppur or Aligarh, and the town can be looked at meaningfully only by taking a larger area, linking it to the general problems of Kerala as a whole.
