Susmita and Shirish Sapre and their teenage daughter are a lively family, very fond of socializing and partying. When they approached Shirish Beri to design their house on a 15 m x 30 m plot in a typical housing society in Kolhapur , they were clear about what they wanted: it should be attractive, warm and welcoming for their extended family and friends.
Shirish at that time was very busy with a number of large projects, and a bit hesitant to take on their job right away . But the Sapre family was insistent that they wanted only him to design their home and agreed to wait for almost a year. Adhering to his brief, he conceptualized a house that would have a distinct personality amidst the faceless and sometimes cluttered suburban house facades , and designed a layout that would encourage interaction between family and friends, to become an expression of the 'Joy of Living'. According to Shirish, this connectivity with life could best be  expressed by a form that grew organically out of the green soil.
