Jury Comments
Good indepth study and well articulated presentation.
Different materials could have been used for open spaces.
The design would have been appreciated more if there was a connection established between tourists and the historical place.
India has a rich share of military heritage. Having different names and forms, these served the main purpose of defence and protection. Among India's World Heritage Sites, 8% are forts. Though a huge number of fo rts are protected by the central or local government bodies, many remain unprotected due to various factors.
They either lie abandoned or are looked after by a local community. Given the rapid ra te of globalization, which has led to standardization and monotony in architecture, preserving the identity of a cu lturally rich country as India is
crucial.
Pratapgad fort is a hill fort located in Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra which was constructed in the year 1656. The fo rt is famous for its association with the acclaimed 'Battle of Pratapgad', fought between Adilshahi General Afzal Khan and Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the foothills. The revival of cultural heritage has many aspects
to it A few aspects to be focused on were the people (including their intangible culture), the history, the geography, and the architecture (the tangible aspect) .
The given proposal would have to respond to the above aspects.
The emphasis of the proposal was to create a dialogue between the architectural language of t he historic structure and t he intervent ions while maintaining a sense of harmony in the contemporary setting. An attempt at revival of the tan gible and intangible cultural heritage of Pratapgad was made through architectural interventions within the fort precinct The
prototype could be followed for in situ solutions catering to similar heritage precincts.
