Lessons for NGO’s

Non Governmental Organizations have been playing great role in the prevention and mitigation of the disasters. Unfortunately due to enthusiasm many NGO’s come forward and adopt plans that instead of providing relief starts obstruction to the relief measures. To utilize the potential of the NGO’s fully, policies are necessary on the following areas:

• Monitoring technologies.
• Prediction and forecasting.
• Management of mitigation and relief facilities.
• Preparedness at local government level- effect of 73rd Constitutional amendments.
• Ham Radio organization for dissemination of the pre- and post-disaster information.
• Creation of awareness amongst the masses regarding dos and don’ts.
• Development and distribution of ready to eat and packed ‘disaster food’ with region specific requirements of residents.
• Education to the school children regarding disaster preparedness.
• Developing ‘volunteers of disaster mitigation force’.
• Identification of possible disasters at local level and preparing the residents to face the same.
• Assessment of the risks and working out preparedness drills.
• Identification of the resource persons who can help during the disasters.
• Identification of locations and collection of basic relief material.

The local administration shall have to come forward to coordinate the efforts of various agencies. For doing so they shall have to chalk out and make it public their detailed action plan to be followed by all.
