DISASTER PREPAREDNESS for Fire prone ares
For FIRE Prone Areas
Major fire occurs in the areas where no care has been taken in planning, designing or execution of the structures. At such places the cause is loose electrical wires or un-cared fire. Fire in ‘jhuggi jhopri’ or ‘jhoper patti’ is a regular phenomenon all over the Country. The damages are largely due to the ignorance over basic factors.
Do the Following BEFORE the fire
• Check the potential sources of fire- electrical, gas, petrol or others
• Check that sufficient fire fighting and detecting devices are available, if not then get them installed.
• Get yourself and others familiarized with the fire fighting system for different types of fires. Keep in mind that every fire cannot be extinguished by water.
• Get wiring in your building checked for loose connections.
• Prepare a fire fighting and evacuation plan and educate all the residents about the same.
• Organize mock evacuation exercise regularly.
• Keep the inflammable material away from the source of fire to reduce probability.
• In case of squatter area develop and familiarize the residents with the evacuation and fighting plan.
• Check that the area has sufficient road width for taking the firefighting equipment inside the colony.
• Most of the bylaws take care of the provisions for fighting fire. They must be followed.
Do the Following AFTER the Fire
• Evacuate the men and possible material from the area.
• In case of multi-storied buildings
• Do not use the lift.
• Evacuate the floors above the floor on which the fire has struck.
• Switch -off the electricity and use only torchlight.
• Check the burning material and use the suited extinguishing material.
