Scale and proportion

In certain cases the spatial relationships between the height of the buildings and the width of the space will induce a feeling of comfort. Such spaces are not only spatially enclosed but actually feel enclosed; they are psychologically restful and complete. There are many historical and current examples where the vertical and overhead planes have been organised to reveal and enclose.

Suggested height/width ratios

Design Guide for Residential Areas

Minimum ratio (height to width)
1 :1

(less than this can be claustrophobic)

Maximum ratio (height to width)
1 :2.5
