ELEPHANTA
The island of Elephanta, in Bombay Harbor about seven miles from the city and easily reached by motor launch
ferry, got its name from the Portuguese who landed here and discovered colossal Stone image of an elephant.
This sculpture subsequently was dismantled and reconstructed in Victoria Gardens in Bombay. There are a number of cave at Elephants, but the principal and most imposing one is Cave 1
