The traditional and conventional development plans for urban settlements belong to the concept of 'Master Plan' which is derived from the British Town Planning
legislation and its process. In the last three and half decades, more than one thousand master plans have been prepared for different urban centers across the country. These master plans or development plans prepared under the Town Planning Acts have legal backing and they are statutory.
