The movement pattern and t he volume of people needs to be reflected in the design.
Infrastructure services, accessibility, zoning regulations, waste management and sustainability are critical aspects.
Movement networks and patterns are different for different user groups.
A walk down south of howrah bridge, this stretch reveals the extent of apathy towards the city's greatest heritage. There are half a dozen
ghats with both historical and architectural significance. The most exq uisite of them all ramchandra goenka bat hing ghat/mullick
ghat lies in utter neglect. Lying just beside the hooghly river and the two famous bathing ghats of Kolkata - mullick ghat and jagannath ghat,
the mullick ghat flower market is a celebration of senses, a visual treat and a olfactory sensat ion. Mullick ghat is a 130 year old flower market, the
largest in kolkata, and one of the biggest in asia. The market starts around 4 am where flower sellers from adjacent areas of kolkata gather
with their colourful merchandise.
The thesis proposal is aimed to understand the existing scenario of the mullick ghat and its surroundings and to give a site-specific architectural solution. The site has a hist orical background of more t han 250 yea rs which also includes values of different architectural styles Diversity is one of t he major attractions of the site. The vi be of the site changes dramatically in every 10-15 m.
The proposal of the project is extremely sit especific or rather zone-specific where the existing vibe remain unchanged. The elements like trees, existing temple, existing structure, topography are used as the main design parameters to redevelop t he site With the exist ing site t opography, the area is divided into two parts which have a level difference of about 4m and simple grid iron pattern, to design the elevated level.open and green spaces
are designed along the line that connects the existing node and temple. The concept of cut and fill has been applied to minimize the project cost
and to design with t he micro topography within the site, retaining walls have been proposed to encounter erosion in the riverfront.
Taken from : ARCHIVING ARCHITECTURAL THESIS 2020 - "Awards for Excellence in Architectural Thesis" the annual program conducted by the Council of Architecture through its academic unit Council of Architecture Training and Research Centre (COA TRC) completed its eleventh cycle in 2016.
