Kalibangan, in the local language means 'black bangles'. With its latitude 29°25' N and longitude 74°05' E, Kalibanga is located in the revenue jurisdiction of district Ganganagar, Rajasthan. The site is located on the southern bank of the river Ghaggar which is now dry, but must have anciently been a substantial river, as indicated by its spawn. In its upper reaches it is joined by the Saraswati, which still carries some water.
