Urban transformation is a process of change in urban pattern of a place as an attempt of evolution in response to various factors of
political, economic or social character. This is characterized by a diverse fabric of built forms over a time period, imparting an unique identity
to a place.
This thesis deals with the proposal of a tourism and entertainment hub on a 30-acre land parcel along the river Hooghly, adjacent to the Andaman Dock area of Khidderpore. The rejuvenation of the riverfront will aim at giving the river back to the citizens as a recreational space and with the Port Museum in the context, the rich cultura l and colonial industrial heritage of the entire Hooghly corridor will be highlighted .
Through this project, the current urban issues are also addressed, as per the inferences drawn from studies and surveys. In this thesis, the proposed Port Museum has been accommodated in the existing tea transit warehouse which reuses the building and upholds its heritage value. Appropriate structural measures have been suggested for public safety and improved aesthetics of the build ing. A series of buildings along the road front have been collectively reused and t ransformed into t he shopping arcade of the site. The existing buildings have also been
retrofitted with contemporary concrete accent structures, to mark t he contrast of materials and colour, so as to make the user aware that
he/she is about to go through a t ra nsition of space, differentiated by timeline.
The current environmental awareness drive has t riggered the city and its people to embrace the river and its surroundings. Several government
initiatives are being planned and executed to uplift the Hooghly heritage corridor. Thus, to draw a conclusion, th is thesis does not stand as
an isolated proposal, but as a part of t he whole ongoing planning of riverfronts along Hooghly.
