Jury Comments
• The scale of the project is similar to an urban design project, however, the responsibility to justify the project goes beyond the site.
• Modes of accessibility should be explored more, from ground to terrace and back. The movement could have been used to trace the quality of space.
• Sustainability issues need to be addressed in a large scale urban project as this.
Urban life is changing rapidly and drastically. Open and green spaces have almost exhausted in urban areas due to urbanization. As the country faces a rapid increase in the population, the exist ing social problems are ignored and even worsened. The development aims to create a balanced lifestyle with vibrant mixed uses that encourages a sensible environment. There are numerous "urban voids" in between build ings, corners, etc. and it can be used productively for public gathering with enormous activity, an enclosed public space, green open spaces as waterfront development to get people involved.
These spaces have the capability of enhancing and strengthening the public realm. The Mass Rapid Transportation system MRTS
-Running from Chennai beach station to Velachery connecting 17 stations in between is the one of the busiest transportations in the city carrying about 1,00,000 passengers to and fro in a day. It was constructed over the Buckingham canal to connect the major parts of the city. It Thesis aims to explore good public space by using place making as a key tool for better designing. The site is a stretch starting from Indira nagar station to LB road connecting Thi ruvanmiyur station. The site has well mixed urban grains on one side with residents and the other side with institutional faci lities. The
design reba lances the car and pedestrian traffic making an oasis of people that they can eat, drink; creating park-like amenities that ensures the good environment quality. The surrounding spaces are designed in such a way that they
contribute to a pavilion where people can donate their things and beside it is the adventure pavilion when people walk through it creates a sound that makes them feel relaxed. The proposed design provides convenient, comfortable, and seamless connections between neighbourhood, transport fac ilities, key spaces, attractions and it also ensures the weather comfort for the pedestrian users. The proposal could be considered as a prototype and can be implemented in the urban
voids of the city, based on their context.
