Lunacity- Defining architecture beyond the boundaries of earth
Moon

Jury Comments
• A good attempt of understanding the space with respect to human experience and how humans could adapt to the space environment.
• The architecture fraternity has a role to play in organisations that build space settlements and a serious knowledge of material science and biosphere would help.
• Details of construction technology with the t ype of equipment materials, assembling, and energy distribution need to be provided.
Science, technology and human expedition touch every side of our Lives. We want to expand our existence to t he possible section of the universe. Since the time humans existed and developed their ability to recall, they have been seeing the Moon. The Moon has interested us for countless reasons. We have made the human touchdown on the surface of the Moon. It is now the time that we expand our outlook and explore architecture in space and strateg ies for master plann ing of the earliest permanent human settlement on the Moon. LUNACITY presents a comprehensive approach to the planning of a Lunar colony, considering human factors and the demand for habitation modules designed for the Lunarians as an adaptive module with varied functions that can house and assist multiple surface activities.
Lunacity, is an attempt to investigate the vernacular on the Moon. Designing in a low pressure, Low gravity, high Levels of radiation, and extreme colds, rad ically adjusts the architect's tool box and the following spaces and forms.
The character of t his thesis will constitute forming speculations and vast assumptions or the augmentation of technology and space in time to come. There is a deficiency of materials, labour and energy between the moon and Earth.
The materials and the architecture are reusable, modular systems assembled-disassembled to increase functionality and following the principles of fractals and origami.
The Lunacity is located on the rim of the Shackleton crater at the southern lunar pole and provides an excellent potential for solar energy as t he settlement will utilize lengt hy hours of solar energy at high elevation. The environment on the moon is similar to the one underwater, no probability of breathing and moving freely. Adaptability solutions are derived from similar spaces. The earth will be observed at the horizon. Hence to honour this sight, the rim crater will be oriented of the earth front.
Taken from : ARCHIVING ARCHITECTURAL THESIS 2020 - "Awards for Excellence in Architectural Thesis" the annual program conducted by the Council of Architecture through its academic unit Council of Architecture Training and Research Centre (COA TRC) completed its eleventh cycle in 2016.
