A natural ridge runs across the plain, N of the road and parallel to it, in a roughly EW alignment (with deviation of 15 deg. from the cardinal axes).
Ashok Mitra’s classification is based on a categories of workers classification available in the census of 1961 and 1971. In 1991, an effort was made to classify all urban places in terms of their functional character with slight modification by adjusting the industrial categories into five broad economic sectors. The classification is as follows:
Asok Mitra used the 'Ternary Diagram' to analyze the functional classification of Indian towns based on 1961 Census data. Briefly speaking, the method makes use of an equilateral triangle the sides of which graduate from 0 to 100 percent so that the percentage of three variables industry, trade and transport and service can be represented on the diagram. The method of functional classification of Indian towns was based on the concept of the predominance of a particular function of a city
Today brick klines are commonly found in rural areas and bake bricks are freely available. The oldest evidences of houses are available from the excavation of various sites of Indus valley civilization. Mud mortar as cementing material, is widely used in country side. Various other cementing material as mortar are used since ancient times. Unbaked kachcha brick is also used for low height walls.

1919 : First Development of the Master Plans.

1940: (During 2nd. \Vorld War), Plans for roads, water supply and sanitation were made.

1946 : The Health and Survey Development Committee (Bhore Committee) was set to
advice the British Government for the remedy of the three deficiencies (i.e. the roads, water
supply and sanitation) of the Indian towns. During this period many coastal towns and Nagpur
were developed.

1947 : An Act to make the Master Plans were passed. The schemes made under this Act
were known as Urban Improvement Schemes. The first Planning Organizations were the
Urban Improvement Trusts.

After 1947, in all British colonies, Master Plans were made mandatory

Upto 1955, only Rehabilitation towns were made like Nilokheri, Faridabad, Rajpura etc.
Only in 1952, Chandigarh was planned.

From early 1940s, a number of towns were planned in eastern India. Dr. Koenigsberger
planned towns like Jamshedpur, TELCO, TISCO plans, Bhubaneswar etc.

Before 1955 Town Planning was under the Ministry of Health, when the Central,
Regional, and Urban Planning Organizations were created. This was done to help the State
Governments to create the town Planning Departments. Then a number of towns came up like
that of Nangal, Bhilai, Rourkela, Durgapur etc. To date (1990), we have 118 New Towns
