Gauge is used as unit of thickness of a metal sheet or wire. The larger the gauge number, the thinner the metal. Generally metal industries follows
US Birmingham Wire Gage, or the British Standard Wire Gauge and their equivalent values are given bellow
number of gauge = thickness in inch = thickness in millimeter
16 gauge = 1/16 inch = 1.58 mm
17 gauge = 9/160 inch = 1.43 mm
18 gauge = 1/20 inch = 1.27 mm
19 gauge = 7/160 inch = 1.11 mm
20 gauge = 3/80 inch = 0.95 mm
