In India we mark and celebrate every rite of passage, particularly in travel – every threshold and doorway is enriched by ritual consecrating the journey through it.

It has two distinct sections so far. The first of these is in the arrivals corridor, consisting of a series. specially commissioned artworks that map the city as a layered narrative, unfolding page by page before the disembarking travellers. The second section is a wall running like a central curvilinear spine, designed to direct and control circulation of passengers through the terminal.

LAYERED NARRATIVES - ART WALL - JAYA HE

A series of artworks flank the moving walkways leading the disembarking travellers towards the baggage claim area. Intended as an introduction to Mumbai, and by extension, the generic city that exists everywhere in India, they reveal the fluid nature of urbanism, its changing landscapes, dreams, memories, and dynamics.

Mumbai is the commercial and entertainment capital of India. The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), located in the heart of the city, is South Asia's most important aviation hub, handling more than 32 million passengers and more than 670,000 tons of cargo per year. CH2M HILL is providing program management consulting services for the airport's US$2 billion modernization program.

Inspired by the form of traditional Indian pavilions, the new four-story terminal stacks a grand “headhouse,” or central processing podium, on top of highly adaptable and modular concourses below. Rather than compartmentalizing terminal functions, all concourses radiate outwards from a central processing permitting them to swing between domestic and international service.

Just as the terminal celebrates a new global, high-tech identity for Mumbai, the structure is imbued with responses to the local setting, history, and culture. Gracious curbside drop-off zones designed for large parties of accompanying well-wishers accommodate traditional Indian arrival and departure ceremonies. Regional patterns and textures are subtly integrated into the terminal’s architecture at all scales. From the articulated coffered treatment on the headhouse columns and roof surfaces to the intricate jali window screens that filter dappled light into the concourses, Terminal 2 demonstrates the potential for a modern airport to view tradition anew.

The project also makes a significant positive contribution to the local fabric. By integrating into the existing transportation fabric and by furthering connectivity through the simultaneous development of a new road network to service the airport, the terminal helps knit together the historic heart of Mumbai to the south with the city’s burgeoning peripheries to the east and north. -
