SUN TEMPLE- KONARK

Designed and constructed in the form of a pyramid and stretching above like a tower, Konark Sun Temple resembles the structural formation of the temples that can be found in Kalinga. The area of the Sun Temple of Konark is 857 ft by 540 ft.

The temple was built by  King Narasimha Deva-I of the Ganga Dynasty. A workforce of 12 hundred artisans and architects invested their creative talent, energy and artistic commitment for an exhausting period of 12 years.

All Orrisan temple are built in Indo-Aryan Style . The main structure in these temples are Deul (bigger structure) and Mandapa (Jagamohana).

The two other buildings are Nat-Mandir (dancing hall) and Bhog-Mandir (hall of offering).

The stones used were :

Chlorite for door-frames.
Laterite for the foundation staircase and the centre of the platform.
Khondalite used at the rest places.

The stones were smoothly finished and fitted together. They were laid horizontally, placed one upon another, and joined together with iron cramps and dowels.
