Student Exhibition of 3D Geometric Drawing and Design Representation

The students of the PG Diploma in Design – Foundation Programme at the Indian Institute of Crafts & Design (IICD), Jaipur, exhibited their classwork in 3D Geometric Drawing and Design Representation on 10 September 2026. The exhibition showcased the students’ progression from understanding basic three-dimensional geometry to representing complex forms, spaces, perspectives, shadows and architectural compositions through manual drawing techniques.
The subject was designed as a foundation for developing spatial understanding, visualisation skills, geometric accuracy and graphic communication—essential abilities for students entering the field of design.
From Basic Geometry to Spatial Thinking
The learning journey began with simple three-dimensional forms and gradually moved towards more complex methods of representation. Students explored isometric drawing, perspective construction, vanishing-point methods, interior perspectives, exploded views, plans, sections and presentation techniques.
The exercises were structured progressively so that students could understand not only how to draw an object, but also how a three-dimensional form is constructed, viewed and communicated.
The first exercises included basic 3D isometric objects, followed by gift-pack isometric drawings and more complex 3D objects. Through these exercises, students developed an understanding of axes, proportion, scale, edges and the systematic construction of three-dimensional forms.
Understanding Form Through Isometric Drawing
Isometric representation provided the students with an important foundation for visualising objects without relying on perspective distortion.
The students worked on:
- Basic 3D isometric objects
- Gift-pack isometric compositions
- Isometric representation of 3D objects
- Stepped-form isometric views
These exercises helped students understand how a three-dimensional object can be translated onto a two-dimensional sheet while maintaining a clear relationship between its different planes and dimensions.

The stepped-form exercise further introduced students to the relationship between simple geometric units and more complex compositions.
Entering the World of Perspective
The next stage introduced students to perspective drawing, allowing them to understand how objects and spaces appear to change according to the viewer’s position.
Students explored the vanishing-point method, perspective construction of cuboids and stepped forms. These exercises developed an understanding of:
Horizon Line → Vanishing Point → Visual Rays → Convergence → Form Construction

The perspective exercises were particularly important in helping students move from the controlled geometry of isometric drawing towards the more visual and perceptual representation of space.
Perspective of Interior Spaces
The learning process then progressed from individual objects to complete environments.
Students prepared an interior view of a classroom, learning how architectural spaces can be constructed using perspective principles. This exercise required them to understand the relationship between the floor, ceiling, walls, openings and furniture within a single visual field.
The classroom perspective was followed by exercises on shadow casting in perspective, introducing another important dimension of visual representation.
Shadows helped students understand the relationship between:
- Light source
- Object geometry
- Ground plane
- Direction of shadows
- Depth and spatial perception
Thus, the drawing evolved from simply representing an object to communicating light, depth and atmosphere.
Exploded View – Understanding Construction and Assembly
The exploded-view exercise introduced students to another important method of design representation.
Instead of showing an object as a single assembled unit, an exploded drawing separates its components spatially while maintaining their relationship to one another.

This technique encourages students to understand:
Part → Relationship → Assembly → Construction
It is particularly valuable in product design, furniture design, industrial design and other disciplines where understanding the relationship between individual components is essential.
From 3D Representation to Architectural Drawing
An important stage of the course involved connecting three-dimensional representation with conventional architectural drawings.
Students prepared:
- Classroom plans
- 1 BHK plan
- Classroom plan and section
Through these exercises, students began to understand how the same space can be represented through different drawing systems.
A plan communicates horizontal organisation and spatial relationships, while a section reveals vertical relationships, heights and levels. The ability to move between plan, section, elevation, isometric and perspective representation is fundamental to design communication.
Developing Manual Presentation Skills
The later exercises concentrated on presentation quality and visual communication.
Students experimented with ink-pen presentation, learning how line quality, hierarchy, thickness, hatching and controlled graphic expression can enhance a drawing.
The course also included perspective presentation and a cube composition presentation, encouraging students to move beyond technical correctness towards visual composition.

The cube composition exercise demonstrated how simple geometric units can be arranged, repeated, transformed and composed to create visually interesting three-dimensional forms.

Interior Perspective Using Grid
The final exercise, completed on 10 September 2026, focused on the interior perspective of a room using a grid.
The perspective grid became a tool for establishing accurate spatial relationships within an interior environment. It helped students understand the systematic construction of floors, walls, furniture and other elements while maintaining perspective consistency.

The progression demonstrates how the students moved from basic geometric construction to the representation of objects, spaces, light and architectural environments.
Learning Beyond the Sheet
The objective of 3D Geometric Drawing and Design Representation was not merely to teach students a collection of drawing techniques. The exercises were intended to develop a designer’s ability to think spatially.
A student who understands geometry can construct a form.
A student who understands perspective can visualise it.
A student who understands composition can communicate it.
And a student who understands all three can begin to design space consciously.
The exhibition therefore represented more than a collection of classroom assignments. It documented the students’ learning process and development of visual language over a period of approximately three weeks.
Guidance by Ar. Manish Jain
The exercises were conducted under the guidance of Ar. Manish Jain, who emphasised the importance of combining geometric discipline with creative visual thinking. The teaching approach focused on understanding the principles behind each drawing method rather than treating representation as a purely mechanical exercise. Students were encouraged to observe, construct, analyse and communicate form through manual drawing.
The exhibition on 10 September 2026 provided an opportunity to view this progression collectively—from the first simple isometric exercises to more sophisticated interior perspectives and presentation drawings.
The 3D Geometric Drawing and Design Representation exhibition at IICD Jaipur demonstrated how fundamental geometry can become the starting point for creative spatial expression. From a simple cube to a stepped form, from an isolated object to an exploded assembly, and finally from a geometric construction to a complete interior perspective, the students gradually developed the ability to see, understand and represent three-dimensional space. The displayed work stands as a visual record of their journey from geometry to form, form to space, and space to design communication.
