Definitions of ‘project’.
Newman define that “a project typically has a distinct mission that it is designed to achieve and a clear termination point the achievement of the mission”.
Gillinger defines “project” as the whole complex of activities involved in using resources to gain benefits.
Project management institute, USA defined project as “a system involving the co-ordination of a number of separate department entities throughout organization, in a way it must be completed with prescribed schedules and time constraints”.
According to the encyclopedia of management, “project is an organized unit dedicated to the attainment of goal, the successful completion of a development project on time, within budget, in conformance with predetermined programme specification.”
Projects in project management involve a unique set of activities and tasks that are designed to achieve specific goals and objectives within a predetermined timeframe.
Projects can be large or small, simple or complex, and can take many forms, such as building a new bridge, developing a new software application and product launches, to marketing campaigns, organizing an event and organizational change initiatives. Each project has its unique set of challenges and requirements, and project managers must be able to adapt to changing circumstances, balance competing demands, and work effectively with diverse teams.
Projects are different from ongoing, day-to-day operations, which are repetitive and routine in nature. Projects have a specific start and end date, and often require a dedicated team of individuals with specialized skills and expertise to manage and deliver the project’s outcomes.
The success of a project is typically measured by its ability to achieve the specific objectives that were defined at the outset, and to deliver the required outcomes within the defined constraints of time, budget, and scope. Project management is the process of planning, executing, and controlling the various activities and tasks involved in delivering a successful project outcome.
