Step by Step Guide to Fill JoSAA Counselling Choices
If you have got CRL rank between 35K to 50K , for Seat Type Open and Gender-Neutral it is very difficut to find ideal choice filling order. We have to weighted index method based on following criteria
50% weight to average closing rank, 25% to travel time, and 25% to type of college
To rank the colleges based on above criteria we need to compute a composite score for each institute and program. Here’s the step-by-step approach:
Normalize the Metrics:
- Average Closing Rank: Lower ranks are better, so we normalize using the inverse or a relative scale.
- Travel Time: Lower travel time is better, so we normalize similarly.
- Type of College: The type values (4, to 10 ) represent different categories (e.g., NITs, IIITs, others). We assume higher values indicate higher prestige (e.g., NIT (comp./electronics )= 10 , NIT (electric /mech/ IP )= 9, NIT ( Civil )= 8, NIT (Metallurgical / mining )= 7, IIIT (comp.) =7 , IIIT (electronics .) =6 IIIT (elect/ mech) =5 GFTI ( comp./electronics )= 5,. GFTI ( electric/ Mech.)= 4 .
Weighting:
- Closing Rank: 50%
- Travel Time: 25%
- Type of College: 25%
Normalization Method:
For Closing Rank and Travel Time, we use min-max normalization to scale values between 0 and 1, where lower values (better ranks or shorter travel times) get higher normalized scores:

For Type of College, we normalize by dividing by the maximum type value (7) to scale between 0 and 1:

Composite Score:

Data Ranges:
- Closing Rank: Min = 35307 (NIT Goa, Mechanical), Max = 50207 (Puducherry Technological University, Electronics and Instrumentation)
- Travel Time: Min = 0 (MNIT Jaipur), Max = 53 (IIIT Agartala)
- Type: Min = 4, Max = 10
Calculations
For each institute, we compute:
Normalized Closing Rank:

Normalized Travel Time:

Normalized Type: Type / 10
Composite Score: (0.5 X Norm. Closing Rank + 0.25 X Norm. Travel Time+ 0.25 X Norm. Type)
Example Calculation
For MNIT Jaipur, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering:
Closing Rank = 38658
Travel Time = 0
Type = 7
Normalized Closing Rank:

Normalized Travel Time:

Normalized Type:

Composite Score: (0.5X0.7758 + 0.25 X1.0 + 0.25X1.0 = 0.3879 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 0.8879)
This process is repeated for all institutes. Below is the ranked list based on the composite scores

Notes
- Top Institutes: MNIT Jaipur ranks highest due to its zero travel time (likely the reference location), high type value (NIT = 7), and decent closing rank. NIT Delhi and NIT Kurukshetra follow due to low travel times and strong type values.
- Type Impact: NITs (type 7) dominate the top ranks due to their higher type score, even with moderate closing ranks or travel times.
- Travel Time: Institutes with low travel times (e.g., Jaipur, Delhi) score higher, as travel time has a significant 25% weight.
- Closing Rank: Programs with lower closing ranks (indicating higher selectivity) contribute to higher scores, but the 50% weight is balanced by other factors.
