‘Road Accidents in India’ by Transport Research Wing of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and ‘Accidental deaths and suicides in India’ by National Crime Records Bureau of The Ministry of Home Affairs are the only two important Official data sets available in India. These datasets are preliminary base for accident research purposes.
An annual report published by the Transport Research Wing of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in India. The report provides statistical data and analysis of road accidents in India, including information on the number of accidents, fatalities, and injuries, as well as the causes of accidents and trends over time.
According to the 2021 report, there were a A total number of 4,12,432 road accidents claiming 1,53,972 lives and causing injuries to 3,84,448 persons. The number of road accidents in 2021 increased by
12.6 percent on an average compared to previous year 2020.
The report also highlights that the majority of accidents occur on national and state highways, with a significant proportion occurring on urban roads as well.
