English Translation of Purushartha Siddhi Upay (Shri Amritchandracharya) Mangala Sanskrit Tika – : Muni shri Pranamya Sagar Maharaj (Under Acharya shri Vidyasagar Maharaj).
Uthanika (Introduction) – In this world, who are proficient in promoting the Dharma Tirtha? With this curiosity, Acharya Bhagwan says:
Translation:
- Those who are skilled in explaining the primary and secondary teachings, and who can dispel the deep ignorance of their disciples, are the ones who know both the practical (Vyavahara) and absolute (Nishchaya) perspectives. These Acharyas are the ones who promote the Dharma Tirtha in the world.
Verse: By understanding the method and the purpose, whether the teaching is primary or secondary, these Acharyas propagate the Tirtha, and they are the mature ones in the world.
Commentary:
- Anekantavada (the doctrine of manifold viewpoints) has two approaches. The first approach is the primary one, which is based on the absolute (Nishchaya) perspective, and the second approach is the secondary one, which is based on the practical (Vyavahara) perspective. The Acharyas, who are well-versed in both perspectives, have dispelled the deep darkness of ignorance in their disciples by carefully explaining these two approaches.
- The Vyavahara Naya (practical viewpoint) is dependent on others, meaning it is differentiated and considers the external aspects. It relies on something external and is thus called the practical viewpoint. On the other hand, the Nishchaya Naya (absolute viewpoint) is independent and undifferentiated, focusing on the internal aspects. It relies on the self and is thus called the absolute viewpoint.
- This statement highlights the importance of both perspectives. Those who only revere the practical viewpoint as a garland and have no enthusiasm for the knowledge of the soul, remaining solely focused on rituals, are disconnected from the true understanding of reality. Similarly, those who believe that liberation can be achieved solely through the knowledge of the absolute viewpoint, dismissing the practice of vows, austerities, and other rituals as mechanical actions, and who consider the soul as always free from bondage, detached, and endowed with pure knowledge, while criticizing monks, are like unrefined stones who, by practicing indiscipline, destroy the Dharma Tirtha.
- Therefore, those who wish for the welfare of both self and others should thoroughly understand both perspectives. They should avoid blaming each other and, after understanding both, refrain from holding on to biased views.
- Only those who know both the practical and absolute perspectives can cross the ocean of the world, filled with many sects, and it is through them that the Dharma Tirtha is propagated. It is said, “If you want to follow the path of Lord Jinendra, do not abandon the practical and absolute viewpoints. If you abandon the practical viewpoint, the Tirtha will be destroyed, and if you abandon the absolute viewpoint, the true nature of the substance will be lost.” 【4】
