The concept of land use transport integration is based on the nature of interaction between spatial and transport development.
There is a closer interaction between land use and transport, how land use creates activities, activities needs transportation and transportation creates accessibility to land, again land use gets developed and so on.
Land development generates travel, and travel generates the need for new facilities which intern increases accessibility and attracts further development.
Benefits of Land use-Transport Integration
•Sustainable use of urban land (low intensity uses in ecologically and culturally important locations; high intensity of use in locations that can support it)
•Reduced vehicle emissions and higher quality of living environment
•Less time spent in travel and therefore higher productivity as well as quality of life
•Greater access to public transport and thus to jobs; additional health and quality of life benefits by enabling and encouraging more walking and cycling.
The land use-transport cycle refers to the interrelationship between land use patterns and transportation systems in urban areas. It is a cyclical process in which land use decisions and transportation investments influence each other over time.
At the beginning of the cycle, land use decisions such as zoning, building codes, and development policies shape the built environment of a city. These decisions determine the location, density, and mix of land uses such as residential, commercial, and industrial areas. This, in turn, affects travel demand and the transportation system needed to support it.
As people and businesses locate in different areas of the city, transportation infrastructure is built or expanded to meet the growing demand for travel. This can include roads, highways, public transit systems, bicycle lanes, and pedestrian infrastructure. The transportation system, in turn, affects land use patterns by influencing accessibility, property values, and development opportunities.
As the transportation system changes and evolves, it can create new opportunities for development or redevelopment in certain areas of the city. This can lead to changes in land use patterns, as businesses and residents locate near transportation hubs or along new transit lines. These changes in turn affect transportation demand and the need for further investment in the transportation system.
The land use-transport cycle is a dynamic process that is influenced by a wide range of factors, including demographics, economic conditions, technological advancements, and policy decisions. By understanding the interrelationship between land use and transportation, urban planners and policymakers can work to create more sustainable and livable cities that meet the needs of their residents while reducing environmental impacts
