English translation of Uttar Puran parv 48- shlok 85 to 101
Perceiving the aversion of Emperor Sagara, Maṇiketu desisted, turned to other discourse, and withdrew—rightly so; for those who understand the proper order of conduct do not act against another’s will, not even for their welfare, much less for their harm. ॥ 85 ॥
“Fie upon these sensual enjoyments, which so delude men that they cause them to swerve from their own pledged words, engender sin, and are relinquished only with great difficulty.” Thus, filled with profound disillusionment, the celestial Maṇiketu departed and ascended to heaven. ॥ 86 ॥
After some time, the celestial Maṇiketu, having devised another means to induce the king to embrace asceticism, descended once more to the earth. ॥ 87 ॥
Assuming the form of a monk endowed with the supernatural powers of a Cāraṇa Ṛddhidhārī, he appeared adorned with manifold auspicious marks—surpassing the moon in beauty, the sun in radiance, and even Kāma in the grace of his form. Thus, self-restrained and intent upon the cultivation of supreme discipline, that sage, having paid homage to the Jina Lord, came and dwelt in the sanctuary of Emperor Sagara. ॥ 88–89 ॥
Beholding that Cāraṇa monk, the Emperor was filled with great wonder and inquired, “Why have you embraced such austerity in this state?”
The monk, though speaking but a feigned account, replied: “This youth is destined to be devoured by old age; it is but a fleeting bloom, worthy only of passing regard. Life diminishes at every moment. This body, being impure, sinful, difficult to sustain, and a vessel of suffering, is indeed fit to be abandoned. Ever does union occur with the undesirable, and separation from the desirable. This संसार—like a ceaseless whirlpool—though flowing from beginningless time, yet remains unending. All these conditions of the soul are wrought by the enemies in the form of कर्म. Therefore, by the fire of austerity, I shall burn these karmic foes and attain an imperishable purity, like refined gold freed from dross—thus shall I realize liberation.” ॥ 90 – 93 ॥
Hearing these words of Maṇiketu, the Emperor indeed became fearful of worldly existence; yet he could not attain the path of liberation, for he was firmly bound by the chains of his sons. ॥ 94 ॥
Reflecting with sorrow, “His worldly existence is yet vast,” Maṇiketu departed. And rightly so—for what wise man would not feel disheartened by an effort that proves fruitless? ॥ 95 ॥
The celestial reflected, “Behold—overpowered by the paltry fortune of empire, the Emperor has forgotten the glory of the Achyuta heaven.” And rightly so; for how can those given to sensual desires discern the true distinction between the worthy and the unworthy? ॥ 96 ॥
“It appears to me that this Emperor esteems the gain of sons alone as the true gain among all attainments; the attainment of the splendour of heaven and liberation he does not regard as gain at all. Thinking thus, he remains utterly absorbed in his sons.” ॥ 97 ॥
At one time, those princes—haughty and impetuous like the cubs of lions—approached the Emperor, who was seated in the royal assembly, and thus addressed him:
“If the youth of Kṣatriya sons, adorned with valor and courage, does not accomplish some arduous task and thereby fulfill the cherished desire of their father, then such youth is no youth at all. What, then, is the worth of being born or of merely sustaining life? Birth and existence are common to all beings alike. Therefore, O King, command us some deed filled with daring, by which we may cast off the ignominy—nay, the unrighteousness—that arises from merely partaking of food without worthy endeavor.” ॥ 98–101 ॥
