श्लोक 157 से 166 भरत की प्रशंसा

सभा भगवान से प्रबोध पाकर शोभित हुई। उनकी वाणी अज्ञान नष्ट करती है। भरत उनके दर्शन और वचन से कृतार्थ हुए। धर्मोपदेश मेघवर्षा-सा है। भगवान सब तत्त्व बताते हैं। भरत और प्रश्न पूछना चाहते हैं।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 1- Shlok 157 to 166

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 157

त्वत्तः प्रबोधमायान्ती सभेयं ससुरासुरा । प्रफुल्लवदनाम्मोजा व्यक्तमम्भोजिनीयते

हे देव, देव और धरणेंद्रों से भरी हुई यह सभा आपके निमित्त से प्रबोध-प्रकृष्ट ज्ञान को (पक्ष में विकास को) पाकर कमलिनी के समान शोभायमान हो रही है क्योंकि सबके मुख, कमल के समान अत्यंत प्रफुल्लित हो रहे हैं ।।157।। 

“O Lord, this assembly, filled with celestials and Dharanendras, is illuminated by the supreme wisdom emanating from you. It appears as resplendent as a lotus pond, for everyone’s faces, like lotuses, are blooming with utmost joy.”( 157)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 158

तमःप्रलयलीनस्य जगतः सर्जनं प्रति । त्वयामृतमिवासितमिदमालक्ष्यते वचः ॥१५८॥

 हे भगवन् आपके यह दिव्य वचन अज्ञानांधकाररूप प्रलय में नष्ट हुए जगत् की पुनरुत्पत्ति के लिए सींचे गये अमृत के समान मालूम होते हैं ।।158।। 

“O Lord, your divine words seem like nectar sprinkled for the regeneration of the world, which had been destroyed in the deluge of ignorance and darkness.”(158)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 159

नोदभास्यन् यदि ध्वान्तविच्छिदस्त्वद्वचोंऽशवः । तमस्यन्धे जगत्कृत्स्नमपतिष्यदिदं ध्रुवम्

हे देव, यदि अज्ञानांधकार को नष्ट करने वाले आपके वचनरूप किरण प्रकट नहीं होते तो निश्चय से यह समस्त जगत् अज्ञानरूपी सघन अंधकार में पड़ा रहता ।।159।। 

“O Lord, if the radiant beams of your words, which dispel the darkness of ignorance, had not emerged, this entire world would surely have remained trapped in the dense darkness of ignorance.”( 159)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 160

युष्मत्संदर्शनादेव देवामन्मे कृतार्थता । कस्य वा नु कृतार्थत्वं संनिधौ महतो निधेः ॥१६०॥

हे देव, आपके दर्शन मात्र से ही मैं कृतार्थ हो गया हूँ, यह ठीक ही है महानिधि को पाकर कौन कृतार्थ नहीं होता ? ।।160।।

“O Lord, merely by beholding you, I feel fulfilled. Indeed, who would not feel fulfilled upon attaining a great treasure?”( 160)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 161

श्रुत्वा पुनर्भवद्वाचं कृतार्थतरकोऽस्म्यहम् । दृष्ट्वामृतं कृती लोकः किं पुनस्तद्सोपयुक्॥१६१॥

आपके वचन सुनकर तो मैं और भी अधिक कृतार्थ हो गया क्योंकि जब लोग अमृत को देखकर ही कृतार्थ हो जाते हैं तब उसका स्वाद लेने वाला क्या कृतार्थ नहीं होगा अर्थात् अवश्य ही होगा ।।161।। 

“Upon hearing your words, I feel even more fulfilled, for when people are satisfied merely by seeing nectar, how could one who tastes it not be fulfilled? Indeed, they certainly would be.”( 161)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 162

इष्ट एत्र किलारण्ये वृष्टो देव इति श्रुतिः । स्पष्टीभूताद्य मे देव वृष्टं धर्माम्बु यत्त्वया ॥ १६२॥

हे नाथ, वन में मेघ का बरसना सबको इष्ट है यह कहावत जो सुनी जाती थी सो आज यहाँ आपके द्वारा धर्मरूपी जल की वर्षा देखकर मुझे प्रत्यक्ष हो गयी । भावार्थ―जिस प्रकार वन में पानी की वर्षा सबको अच्छी लगती है उसी प्रकार इस कैलास के कानन में आपके द्वारा होने वाली धर्मरूपी जल की वर्षा सबको अच्छी लग रही है ।।162।। 

“O Lord, the saying that the rain of clouds in the forest is beneficial to all is something I had heard, but today, by witnessing the shower of water in the form of Dharma from you, it has become a reality for me.
Meaning – Just as the rain in the forest is pleasing to all, similarly, the shower of Dharma in this sacred forest of Kailasa is pleasing to all.”( 162)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 163

वयोपदिशता तच्वं किं नाम परिशेषितम् । धूतान्धतमसो मास्वान् मास्यं किमवशेषयेत् ॥१६३॥

 हे भगवन्, उपदेश देते हुए आपने किस पदार्थ को छोड़ा है ? अर्थात् किसी को भी नहीं । क्या सघन अंधकार को नष्ट करने वाला सूर्य किसी पदार्थ को प्रकाशित करने से बाकी छोड़ देता है ? अर्थात् नहीं ।।163।।

Oh Lord, while imparting your teachings, is there anything that you have left unexplained? Certainly not. Just as the sun, which dispels dense darkness, does not leave any object unilluminated, so too, you leave no truth untold.”163

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 164

 ‘वयोपदर्शिते तत्त्वे सतां मोमुझते न धीः । महत्यादर्शिते वमन्यनन्धः कः परिस्खलेत् ॥१६४॥

“Oh Lord, the wisdom of noble souls never succumbs to delusion in the principles shown by you. Can a person with vision ever stumble on the vast path illuminated by great beings? Certainly not.”164

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 165-166

वद्वचोविस्तरे कृत्स्नं वस्तुविम्बं मयेक्षितम् । त्रैलोक्य श्री मुखा लोकम ङ्गलाब्दतलायिते ॥१६५॥

तथापि किमपि प्रष्टुमिच्छा मे हृदि वर्त्तते । मवद्वचोमृतामीक्ष्ण पिपासा तन्त्र कारणम् ॥१६६॥

हे स्वामिन्, तीनों लोकों की लक्ष्मी के मुख देखने के लिए मंगल दर्पण के समान आचरण करने वाले आपके इन वचनों के विस्तार में प्रतिबिंबित हुई संसार की समस्त वस्तुओं को यद्यपि मैं देख रहा हूँ तथापि मेरे हृदय में कुछ पूछने की इच्छा उठ रही है और उस इच्छा का कारण आपके वचनरूपी अमृत के निरंतर पान करते रहने की लालसा ही समझनी चाहिए ।।165-166।। 

“Oh Lord, your words, which serve as an auspicious mirror reflecting the face of the goddess of fortune of all three worlds, reveal all the objects of this universe in their expanse. Yet, even as I perceive everything within them, a desire to ask something still arises in my heart. The reason for this longing should be understood as my yearning to continually drink the nectar of your words.”

These verses beautifully express the speaker’s reverence for the divine teachings, describing them as a mirror of auspiciousness that reveals universal truths. Despite this revelation, the heart’s unending thirst for the wisdom and sweetness of the divine words remains insatiable, highlighting the depth of devotion and eagerness for spiritual knowledge.165-166

श्लोक 147 से 156 कथावतार का प्रारंभ

कथा से पुण्य, स्वर्ग, और मोक्ष मिलता है। तृतीय काल में ऋषभदेव कैलास पर आए। देवों ने उनकी पूजा की। केवलज्ञान प्राप्त हुआ। इंद्र ने समवसरण बनाया। भरत ने भगवान को नमस्कार कर स्तुति की। सभा संतुष्ट हुई।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 1- Shlok 147 to 156

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 147

सत्कथाश्रवणात् पुण्यं श्रोतुर्यदुपचीयते । तेनाभ्युदयसंसिद्धिः क्रमान्नैःश्रेयसी स्थितिः ॥१४७॥

सत्कथा के सुनने से श्रोताओं को जो पुण्य का संचय होता है उससे उन्हें पहले तो स्वर्ग आदि अभ्युदयों की प्राप्ति होती है और फिर क्रम से मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है ।।147।

By listening to virtuous teachings, the merit accumulated by the listeners first leads them to attain prosperity, such as heaven, and eventually, step by step, they achieve liberation (moksha).

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 148

इत्याप्तोक्त्यनुसारेण कथितं वः कथामुखम् । कथावतारसंबन्धं वक्ष्यामः शृणुताधुना ॥१४८॥

इस प्रकार मैंने शास्त्रों के अनुसार आप लोगों को कथामुख (कथा के प्रारंभ) का वर्णन किया है अब इस कथा के अवतार का संबंध कहता हूँ सो सुनो ।।148।।

In this way, I have described the introduction to the discourse in accordance with the scriptures. Now, I shall narrate the context of this discourse’s origin—listen to it.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 149

इत्यनुश्रूयते देवः पुराकल्पे स नाभिजः । अध्युवास भुवो मौलि कैलासाद्रिं यदृच्छया ॥१४९॥

गुरुपरंपरा से ऐसा सुना जाता है कि पहले तृतीय काल के अंत में नाभिराज के पुत्र भगवान् ऋषभदेव विहार करते हुए अपनी इच्छा से पृथिवी के मुकुटभूत कैलास पर्वत पर आकर विराजमान हुए ।।149।।

It is heard through the tradition of revered teachers that, toward the end of the third era (Tirtha-Kal), Lord Rishabhadeva, the son of King Nabhi, while wandering at his will, ascended and resided on Mount Kailash, the crown jewel of the Earth.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 150

तत्रासीनं च तं देवाः परिचेरुः सपर्यया । तुष्टुवुश्च किरीटाग्रसंदष्टकरकुड्‌मलाः ॥१५०॥

 कैलास पर विराजमान हुए उन भगवान् वृषभदेव की देवों ने भक्तिपूर्वक पूजा की तथा जुड़े हुए हाथों को मुकुट से लगाकर स्तुति की ।।150।। 

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 151

सभाविरचनां तत्र सुत्रामा त्रिजगद्गुरोः । प्रीतः प्रवर्तयामास प्राप्तकैवल्यसंपदः ॥१५१।।

उसी पर्वत पर त्रिजगद्गुरु भगवान् को केवलज्ञान की प्राप्ति हुई, उससे हर्षित होकर इंद्र ने वहाँ समवसरण की रचना करायी ।।151।। 

On that very mountain, Lord Trijagadguru attained omniscience (Keval Jnana). Delighted by this, Indra organized the creation of a Samavasarana there.”( 151)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 152

तत्र देवसमे देवं स्थितमत्यद्भुतस्थितिम् । प्रणनाम मुदाभ्येत्य भरतो मक्तिनिर्भरः ।॥१५२।।

देवाधिदेव भगवान् आश्चर्यकारी विभूति के साथ जब समवसरण सभा में विराजमान थे, तब भक्ति से भरे हुए महाराज भरत ने हर्ष के साथ आकर उन्हें नमस्कार किया ।।152।।

“When the Lord of Lords, adorned with astonishing splendor, was seated in the Samavasarana assembly, King Bharat, filled with devotion, approached joyfully and bowed to him.”(152)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 153

 स तं स्तुतिभिरर्थ्याभिरभ्यर्च्य नृसुराचितम् । यथोचितं ‘सभास्थानमध्यास्त विनयानतः ॥१५३॥

महाराज भरत ने मनुष्य और देवों से पूजित उन जिनेंद्र-देव की अर्थ से भरे हुए अनेक स्तोत्रों द्वारा पूजा की और फिर वे विनय से नत होकर अपने योग्य स्थान पर बैठ गये ।।153।।

“King Bharat worshipped Lord Jinendra, who was revered by humans and celestial beings, with numerous hymns filled with profound meaning. Then, bowing with humility, he took his appropriate seat.”( 153)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 154

सभा समासुरसुरा पीत्वा धर्मामृतं विभोः । पिप्रिये पद्मिनीवोद्यदंशुजालमलं रवेः ॥१५४॥

 दैदीप्यमान देवों से भरी हुई वह सभा भगवान से धर्मरूपी अमृत का पान कर उस तरह संतुष्ट हुई थी जिस तरह कि सूर्य के तेज किरणों का पान कर कमलिनी संतुष्ट होती है ।।154।।

That assembly, filled with radiant celestials, was satisfied by partaking in the nectar of Dharma emanating from the Lord, just as a lotus is gratified by absorbing the sun’s bright rays.”( 154)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 155

मध्येसभमथोत्थाय भरतो रचितान्ञ्जलिः । व्यजिज्ञपदिदं वाक्यं प्रश्रयो मूर्तिमानिव ॥१५५॥

 इसके अनंतर मूर्तिमान् विनय की तरह महाराज भरत हाथ जोड़ सभा के बीच खड़े होकर यह वचन कहने लगे ।।155।।

“After this, King Bharat, embodying humility, stood in the middle of the assembly with folded hands and began to speak these words.”( 155)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 156

ब्रुवतोऽस्य मुखाम्भोजालसद्दन्तांशुकेसरात् । निर्ययौ मधुरा वाणी प्रसन्नेव सरस्वती ॥१५६॥

प्रार्थना करते समय महाराज भरत के दाँतों की किरणरूपी केशर से शोभायमान मुख से जो मनोहर वाणी निकल रही थी वह ऐसी मालूम होती थी मानो उनके मुख से प्रसन्न हुई उज्ज्वल वर्णधारिणी सरस्वती ही निकल रही हो ।।156।।

“While King Bharat was offering his prayers, the delightful words emerging from his radiant face, adorned with the saffron-like glow of his teeth, appeared as if the bright and gracious Goddess Saraswati herself was emanating joyfully from his mouth.”( 156)

श्लोक 137 से 146 श्रोता के लक्षण

श्रोता धर्म सुनने में तत्पर हो। चौदह प्रकार के श्रोता हैं। गाय और हंस जैसे उत्तम, मिट्टी और तोता जैसे मध्यम, अन्य अधम हैं। श्रोता गुण-दोष बताए। उसे सांसारिक फल न चाहें। शुश्रूषा आदि आठ गुण श्रोताओं में हों।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 137

इति धर्मकथाङ्गत्वादर्थाक्षिप्तां चतुष्टयीम् । कथां यथार्ह श्रोतृभ्यः कथकः प्रतिपादयेत् ॥१३७॥

 इस प्रकार धर्मकथा के अंगभूत आक्षेपिणी, विक्षेपिणी, संवेदिनी और निर्वेदिनी रूप चारों कथाओं का विचार कर श्रोताओं की योग्यतानुसार वक्ता को कथन करना चाहिए ।।137।।

Thus, considering the four types of stories — accusatory (ākṣepīṇī), disturbing (vikṣepīṇī), emotional (saṃvedinī), and indifferent (nirvedinī) — which are integral parts of the religious discourse, the speaker should present the narrative according to the capacity of the listeners.” (137)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 138

धर्मश्रतो नियुक्ता ये श्रोतारस्ते मता बुधैः । तेषां च सदसद्भावव्यक्तौ दृष्टान्तकल्पना ॥१३८॥

जो हमेशा धर्मश्रवण करने में लगे रहते हैं विद्वानों ने उन्हें श्रोता माना है । अच्छे और बुरे के भेद से श्रोता अनेक प्रकार के हैं, उनके अच्छे और बुरे भावों के जानने के लिए नीचे लिखे अनुसार दृष्टांतों की कल्पना की जाती है ।।138।।

Those who are always engaged in listening to religious discourses are considered listeners by the scholars. Listeners are of many types, distinguished by their understanding of good and bad. To know their good and bad dispositions, examples are imagined as described below.” (138)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 139-140 ( चौदह प्रकार के श्रोता )

मृच्चालिन्यजमार्जारशुककङ्कशिलाहिमिः । गोहंसमहिषच्छिद्रघटदंशजलौककैः ।।१३९॥

श्रोतारः समभावाः स्युरुत्तमाधममध्यमाः । अन्यादृशोऽपि सन्त्येव तत्किं तेषामियत्तया ॥१४०॥

मिट्टी, चलनी, बकरा, बिलाव, तोता, बगुला, पाषाण, सर्प, गाय, हंस, भैंसा, फूटा घड़ा, डाँस और जोंक इसी प्रकार चौदह प्रकार के श्रोताओं के दृष्टांत समझना चाहिए । भावार्थ―

1. मिट्टी – जैसे मिट्टी पानी का संसर्ग रहते हुए कोमल रहती है, बाद में कठोर हो जाती है । इसी प्रकार जो श्रोता शास्त्र सुनते समय कोमल परिणामी हों परंतु बाद में कठोर परिणामी हो जायें वे मिट्टी के समान श्रोता हैं ।
2. चलनी – जिस प्रकार चलनी सारभूत आटे को नीचे गिरा देती है और छोक को बचा रखती है उसी प्रकार जो श्रोता वक्ता के उपदेश में से सारभूत तत्त्व को छोड़कर निःसार तत्त्व को ग्रहण करते हैं वे चलनी के समान श्रोता हैं ।
3. अज – जो अत्यंत कामी हैं अर्थात् शास्त्रोपदेश के समय श्रृंगार का वर्णन सुनकर जिनके परिणाम श्रृंगार रूप हो जावें वे अज के समान श्रोता हैं ।
4. मार्जार – जैसे अनेक उपदेश मिलने पर भी बिलाव अपनी हिंसक प्रवृत्ति नहीं छोड़ता, सामने आते ही चूहे पर आक्रमण कर देता है उसी प्रकार जो श्रोता बहुत प्रकार से समझाने पर भी क्रूरता को नहीं छोड़ें, अवसर आने पर क्रूर प्रवृत्ति करने लगें वे मार्जार के समान श्रोता हैं ।
5. तोता – जैसे तोता स्वयं अज्ञानी है दूसरों के द्वारा कहलाने पर ही कुछ सीख पाता है वैसे ही जो श्रोता स्वयं ज्ञान से रहित है दूसरों के बतलाने पर ही कुछ शब्द मात्र ग्रहण कर पाते हैं वे शुक के समान श्रोता हैं ।
6. बगुला – जो बगुले के समान बाहर से भद्रपरिणामी मालूम होते हों परंतु जिनका अंतरंग अत्यंत दुष्ट हो वे बगुला के समान श्रोता हैं ।
7. पाषाण – जिनके परिणाम हमेशा कठोर रहते हैं तथा जिनके हृदय में समझाये जाने पर जिनवाणी रुप जल का प्रवेश नहीं हो पाता वे पाषाण के समान श्रोता हैं ।
8. सर्प – जैसे साँप को पिलाया हुआ दूध भी विषरूप हो जाता है वैसे ही जिनके सामने उत्तम-से-उत्तम उपदेश भी खराब असर करता है वे सर्प के समान श्रोता हैं ।
9. गाय – जैसे गाय तृण खाकर दूध देती है वैसे ही जो थोड़ा-सा उपदेश सुनकर बहुत लाभ लिया करते हैं वे गाय के समान श्रोता हैं ।
10. हंस – जो केवल सार वस्तु को ग्रहण करते हैं वे हंस के समान श्रोता हैं ।
11. भैंसा – जैसे भैंसा पानी तो थोड़ा पीता है पर समस्त पानी को गँदला कर देता है । इसी प्रकार जो श्रोता उपदेश तो अल्प ग्रहण करते हैं परंतु अपने कुतर्कों से समस्त सभा में क्षोभ पैदा कर देते हैं वे भैंसा के समान श्रोता हैं ।
12. छिद्र घट – जिनके हृदय में कुछ भी उपदेश नहीं ठहरे वे छिद्र घट के समान श्रोता हैं ।
13. डांस – जो उपदेश तो बिल्कुल ही ग्रहण न करें परंतु सारी सभा को व्याकुल कर दें वे डांस के समान श्रोता हैं ।
14. जोंक – जो गुण छोड़कर सिर्फ अवगुणों को ही ग्रहण करें वे जोंक के समान श्रोता हैं ।

इन ऊपर कहे हुए श्रोताओं के उत्तम, मध्यम और अधम के भेद से तीन-तीन भेद होते हैं । इनके सिवाय और भी अन्य प्रकार के श्रोता हैं परंतु उन सबकी गणना से क्या लाभ है ।।139-140।।

Mud, sieve, goat, cat, parrot, heron, stone, snake, cow, swan, buffalo, broken pot, gadfly, and leech—similarly, one should understand the examples of these fourteen types of listeners.

Explanation:

1. Mud – Just as mud remains soft when in contact with water but hardens later, listeners who are receptive while listening to scriptures but later become rigid in their thinking are like mud.
2. Sieve – Like a sieve discards the essential flour and retains the husk, listeners who ignore the essence of the teachings and cling to the irrelevant are like a sieve.
3. Goat – Those who are excessively lustful and whose responses during spiritual discourses are influenced by descriptions of romance are like goats.
4. Cat – Just as a cat, despite being instructed repeatedly, does not abandon its violent nature and attacks mice when it gets the chance, listeners who remain cruel despite repeated guidance are like cats.
5. Parrot – A parrot, ignorant on its own, learns only by repeating what it is taught. Similarly, listeners who lack their own understanding and merely echo what others say are like parrots.
6. Heron – Those who appear virtuous outwardly but are inwardly malicious are like herons.
7. Stone – Listeners whose minds remain hard and impenetrable, even when exposed to the waters of sacred teachings, are like stones.
8. Snake – Just as milk fed to a snake turns into poison, listeners who twist even the best teachings into harmful effects are like snakes.
9. Cow – Like a cow that produces milk from grass, listeners who derive immense benefit from even a small amount of teaching are like cows.
10. Swan – Those who accept only the essence of teachings, discarding the rest, are like swans.
11. Buffalo – A buffalo drinks little water but muddies the entire pond. Similarly, listeners who take in only a small portion of the teaching but disturb the whole assembly with their arguments are like buffaloes.
12. Broken Pot – Those who retain none of the teachings in their hearts are like broken pots.
13. Gadfly – Listeners who do not absorb any teachings but create chaos in the assembly are like gadflies.
14. Leech – Those who ignore virtues and cling only to faults are like leeches.

There are three categories—excellent, mediocre, and inferior—within each of these listener types. Beyond these, there are many other types of listeners, but detailing them serves no further purpose.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 141

गोहंससदृशान् प्रादुरुत्तमान् मृच्छुकोपमान् । मध्यमान् विदुरन्यैश्च समकक्ष्योऽधमो मतः ॥१४१॥

इन श्रोताओं में जो श्रोता गाय और हंस के समान हैं वे उत्तम कहलाते हैं, जो मिट्टी और तोता के समान हैं उन्हें मध्यम जानना चाहिए और बाकी के समान अन्य सब श्रोता अधम माने गये हैं ।।141।।

Among these listeners, those who are like the cow and the swan are considered excellent. Those who are like the mud and the parrot are regarded as mediocre. All the remaining types of listeners are considered inferior.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 142

शेमुष्यब्दतुलादण्डनिकषोपलसन्निभाः । श्रोतारः सत्कथारत्नपरीक्षाध्यक्षका मताः ॥ १४२॥

जो श्रोता नेत्र, दर्पण, तराजू और कसौटी के समान गुण-दोषों के बतलाने वाले हैं वे सत्कथारूप रत्न के परीक्षक माने गये हैं ।।142।।।

Listeners who are like the eye, mirror, scale, and touchstone, identifying both virtues and faults, are considered examiners of the gem-like essence of good teachings.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 143

श्रोता न चैहिकं किंचित्फलं वान्छेत्कथाश्रुतौ । नेच्छेद् वक्ता च सत्कारधनभेषजसत्क्रियाः ॥१४३॥

श्रोताओं को शास्त्र सुनने के बदले किसी सांसारिक फल की चाह नहीं करनी चाहिए । इसी प्रकार वक्ता को भी श्रोताओं से सत्कार, धन, ओषधि और आश्रय―घर आदि की इच्छा नहीं करनी चाहिए ।।143।।

Listeners should not desire any worldly rewards in exchange for listening to the scriptures. Similarly, speakers should not seek respect, wealth, medicine, shelter, or other forms of hospitality from the listeners.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 144

श्रेयोऽर्थं केवलं ब्रूयात् सन्मार्ग शृणुयाच्च वै । श्रेयोऽर्था हि सत्तां चेष्टा न लोकपरिपक्तये ॥१४४॥

स्वर्ग, मोक्ष आदि कल्याणों की अपेक्षा रखकर ही वक्ता को सन्मार्ग का उपदेश देना चाहिए तथा श्रोता को सुनना चाहिए क्योंकि सत्पुरुषों की चेष्टाएं वास्तविक कल्याण की प्राप्ति के लिए ही होती है अन्य लौकिक कार्यों के लिए नहीं ।।144।। 

The speaker should deliver teachings of the righteous path, and the listener should hear them, with the aim of attaining welfare such as heaven and liberation. This is because the efforts of virtuous individuals are always directed toward true spiritual welfare, not for worldly purposes.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 145

श्रोता शुश्रूषताद्यैः स्वैर्गुणैर्युक्तः प्रशस्यते । वक्ता च वत्सलत्वादियथोक्तगुणभूषणः ॥१४५॥

जो श्रोता शुश्रूषा आदि गुणों से युक्त होता है वही प्रशंसनीय माना जाता है । इसी प्रकार जो वक्ता वात्सल्य आदि गुणों से भूषित होता है वही प्रशंसनीय माना जाता है ।।145।

A listener endowed with qualities such as attentiveness is considered praiseworthy. Similarly, a speaker adorned with virtues such as compassion is also regarded as praiseworthy.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 146

शुश्रूषा श्रवणं चैव ग्रहणं धारणं तथा । स्मृत्यूहापोहनिर्णीतीः श्रोतुरष्टौ गुणान् विदुः ॥१४६॥

शुश्रूषा, श्रवण, ग्रहण, धारण, स्मृति, ऊह, अपोह और निर्णीति ये श्रोताओं के आठ गुण जानना चाहिए ।। भावार्थ―सत्कथा को सुनने की इच्छा होना शुश्रूषा गुण है, सुनना श्रवण है, समझकर ग्रहण करना ग्रहण है, बहुत समय तक उसकी धारणा रखना धारण है, पिछले समये ग्रहण किये हुए उपदेश आदि का स्मरण करना स्मरण है, तर्क-द्वारा पदार्थ स्वरूप के विचार करने की शक्ति होना ऊह है, हेय वस्तुओं को छोड़ना अपोह है और युक्ति द्वारा पदार्थ का निर्णय करना निर्णीति गुण है । श्रोताओं में इनका होना अत्यंत आवश्यक है ।।146।।

There are eight qualities of listeners that should be understood: desire to hear (Shushrusha), listening (Shravan), understanding and accepting (Grahan), retaining for a long time (Dharan), recalling previously learned teachings (Smriti), the ability to analyze subjects through reasoning (Uh), discarding undesirable elements (Apoh), and arriving at conclusions through logical reasoning (Nirneeti).

Explanation:

• The desire to listen to virtuous teachings is Shushrusha.
• Paying attention and listening to those teachings is Shravan.
• Understanding and assimilating the teachings is Grahan.
• Retaining them in memory for an extended period is Dharan.
• Recalling previously absorbed teachings is Smriti.
• The ability to analyze and reflect on the nature of things through reasoning is Uh.
• Discarding unnecessary or harmful elements is Apoh.
• Making decisions about the nature of things through proper reasoning is Nirneeti.

These qualities are essential for all listeners.

श्लोक 117 से 126 कथा और वक्ता के लक्षण

कथा में धर्म, अर्थ, काम का वर्णन होता है। धर्मयुक्त सत्कथा है। अधर्मकथा पाप का कारण है। सद्धर्मकथा स्वर्ग-मोक्ष देती है। इसके सात अंग हैं। द्रव्य, क्षेत्र, तीर्थ, काल, भाव, फल, और प्रकृत इनका विस्तार होगा।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 117

कथाकथकयोरत्र श्रोतणामपि लक्षणम् । व्यावर्णनीयं प्रागेव कथारम्भे मनीषिमिः ॥११७॥

बुद्धिमानों को इस कथारंभ के पहले ही कथा, वक्ता और श्रोताओं के लक्षण अवश्य ही कहना चाहिए ।।117।।

Wise individuals must describe the characteristics of the story, the speaker, and the audience before beginning the narration.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 118

पुरुषार्थोपयोगित्वात्त्रिवर्गकथनं कथा । तत्रापि सत्कथां धर्यामामनन्ति मनीषिणः ॥११८॥

मोक्ष पुरुषार्थ के उपयोगी होने से धर्म, अर्थ तथा काम का कथन करना कथा कहलाती है । जिसमें धर्म का विशेष निरूपण होता है उसे बुद्धिमान पुरुष सत्कथा कहते हैं ।।118।।

The narration that discusses Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth), and Kama (desires) is called a “katha” (story) because it is useful for attaining Moksha (liberation). A narration that primarily focuses on Dharma is referred to by wise individuals as a “satkatha” (virtuous story). 118

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 119

तत्फलाभ्युदयाङ्गत्वादर्थकामकथा कथा । अन्यथा विकथैवासावपुण्यास्रवकारणम् ॥११९॥

धर्म के फलस्वरूप जिन अभ्युदयों की प्राप्ति होती है उनमें अर्थ और काम भी मुख्य हैं अत: धर्म का फल दिखाने के लिए अर्थ और काम का वर्णन करना भी कथा कहलाती है । यदि यह अर्थ और काम की कथा धर्मकथा से रहित हो तो विकथा ही कहलायेगी और मात्र पापास्रव का ही कारण होगी ।।119।। 

The prosperity (Abhyudaya) that arises as a result of Dharma includes Artha (wealth) and Kama (desires) as its primary components. Hence, narrating Artha and Kama to demonstrate the fruits of Dharma is also considered a “katha” (story). However, if a narration of Artha and Kama is devoid of Dharma, it is termed a “vikatha” (false or improper story) and becomes merely a cause of sinful indulgence. 119

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 120

यतोऽभ्युदयनिःश्रेयसार्थसंसिद्धिरन्जसा । सद्धर्मस्तन्निबद्धा या सा सद्धर्मकथा स्मृता ॥१२०॥

जिससे जीवों को स्वर्ग आदि अभ्युदय तथा मोक्ष की प्राप्ति हो जाती है वास्तव में वही धर्म कहलाता है उससे संबंध रखने वाली जो कथा है उसे सद्धर्मकथा कहते हैं ।।120।।

That which enables living beings to attain heavenly prosperity (such as Swarga) and ultimately Moksha (liberation) is truly called Dharma. A narration related to such Dharma is referred to as “Saddharmakatha” (a discourse on true Dharma). 120

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 121

प्रादुर्धर्मकथाङ्गानि सप्त सप्तर्विभूषणाः । यैर्भूषिता कथाऽऽहायें नंटीव रसिका भवेत् ॥१२१॥

सप्त ऋद्धियों से शोभायमान गणधरादि देवों ने इस सद्धर्मकथा के सात अंग कहे हैं । इन सात अंगों से भूषित कथा अलंकारों से सजी हुई नटी के समान अत्यंत सरस हो जाती है ।।121।।

The Ganadharas and other enlightened beings, adorned with the seven types of supernatural powers (Riddhis), have described seven components of this Saddharmakatha (discourse on true Dharma). A narrative enriched with these seven components becomes as captivating and graceful as an actress adorned with ornaments. 121

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 122

द्रव्यं क्षेत्रं तथा तीर्थं कालो मावः फलं महत् । प्रकृतं चेत्यमून्याहुः सप्ताङ्गानि कथामुखे ॥१२२॥

द्रव्य, क्षेत्र, तीर्थ, काल, भाव, महाफल और प्रकृत ये सात अंग कहलाते हैं । ग्रंथ के आदि में इनका निरूपण अवश्य होता चाहिए ।।122।। 

The seven components are called Dravya (substance), Kshetra (location), Tirtha (sacred place), Kala (time), Bhava (emotion or intent), Mahaphala (great results or fruits), and Prakriti (nature or essence). These must be described at the beginning of the scripture or discourse. 122

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 123

द्रव्यं जीवादि षोढा स्यात्क्षेत्रं त्रिभुवनस्थितिः । जिनेन्द्रचरितं तीर्थं कालस्त्रेधा प्रकीर्तितः ॥१२३॥

जीव, पुद्गल, धर्म, अधर्म, आकाश और काल यह छह द्रव्य हैं, ऊर्ध्व, मध्य और पाताल ये तीन लोक क्षेत्र हैं, जिनेंद्रदेव का चरित्र ही तीर्थ है, भूत, भविष्यत् और वर्तमान यह तीन प्रकार का काल है,

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 124

प्रकृतं स्यात् कथावस्तु फलं तत्त्वावबोधनम् । भावः क्षयोपशमजस्तस्य स्यात्क्षायिकोऽथवा ॥१२४॥

 क्षायोपशमिक अथवा क्षायिक ये दो भाव हैं, तत्त्वज्ञान का होना फल कहलाता है, और वर्णनीय कथावस्तु को प्रकृत कहते हैं ।।124।। 
The two states are Kshayopashamic (destruction-cum-subsidence) or Kshayik (destruction). The attainment of true knowledge (Tattvajnana) is called the result (Phala), and the describable subject matter is referred to as Prakriti (nature or essence).

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 125

इत्यमूनि कथाङ्गानि यत्र सा सत्कथा मता । यथावसरमेवैषां प्रपञ्चो दर्शयिष्यते ॥ १२५।।

इस प्रकार ऊपर कहे हुए सात अंग जिस कथा में पाये जायें उसे सत्कथा कहते हैं । इस ग्रंथ में भी अवसर के अनुसार इन अंगों का विस्तार दिखाया जायेगा ।।125।।

In this way, a narrative that contains the seven elements mentioned above is called a Satkatha (true or virtuous story). In this text as well, these elements will be elaborated upon as appropriate to the context. ॥125॥

वक्ता का लक्षण

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 126

तस्यास्तु कथकः सूरिः सवृत्तः स्थिरधीवंशी । “कल्येन्द्रियः प्रशस्ताङ्गः स्पष्टमृष्टेष्टगीर्गुणः ॥१२६॥

ऊपर कही हुई कथा का कहने वाला आचार्य वही पुरुष हो सकता है जो सदाचारी हो, स्थिरबुद्धि हो, इंद्रियों को वश में करने वाला हो,

The narrator of the aforementioned story can only be a person who is virtuous, steadfast in mind, and in control of their senses.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 127 से 129

यः सर्वज्ञमताम्भोधिवाौतविमलाशयः । अशेषवाङ्मलापायादुज्ज्वला यस्य भारती ॥१२७॥

श्रीमान्जितसभो वाग्मी प्रगल्भः प्रतिमानवान् । यः सतां संमतव्याख्यो वाग्विमर्दभरक्षमः ॥ १२८॥

दयालुर्वत्सलो धीमान् परेङ्गिते विशारदः । योऽधीती विश्वविद्यासु स धीरः कथयेत् कथाम् ॥१२९।।

जिसकी सब इंद्रियाँ समर्थ हों, जिसके अंगोंपांग सुंदर हों, जिसके वचन स्पष्ट परिमार्जित और सबको प्रिय लगने वाले हों, जिसका आशय जिनेंद्रमतरूपी समुद्र के जल से धुला हुआ और निर्मल हो, जिसकी वाणी समस्त दोषों के अभाव से अत्यंत उज्जवल हो, श्रीमान् हो, सभाओं को वश में करने वाला हो, प्रशस्त वचन बोलने वाला हो, गंभीर हो, प्रतिभा से युक्त हो, जिसके व्याख्यान को सत्पुरुष पसंद करते हों, अनेक प्रश्न तथा कुतर्कों को सहने वाला हो, दयालु हो, प्रेमी हो, दूसरे के अभिप्राय को समझने में निपुण हो, जिसने समस्त विद्याओं का अध्ययन किया हो और धीर, वीर हो ऐसे पुरुष को ही कथा कहनी चाहिए ।।127-129।।

The narrator of such a story should be a person whose senses are fully capable, whose limbs and features are graceful, whose speech is clear, refined, and pleasing to all. Their intentions should be pure, cleansed by the waters of the ocean-like Jina doctrine, and their words should shine brightly, free from all defects. They should be illustrious, capable of captivating assemblies, eloquent, dignified, and endowed with brilliance.

Their discourse should be admired by virtuous individuals, and they should possess the ability to endure numerous questions and counterarguments. They should be compassionate, loving, skilled in understanding the intentions of others, well-versed in all sciences, and both composed and courageous. Only such a person is qualified to narrate a story. ॥127–129॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 130

जो अनेक उदाहरणों के द्वारा वस्तुस्वरूप कहने में कुशल है, संस्कृत, प्राकृत आदि अनेक भाषाओं में निपुण है, अनेक शास्त्र और कलाओं का जानकार है वही उत्तम वक्ता कहा जाता है ।।130।।

One who is skilled in explaining the true nature of things through various examples, proficient in multiple languages such as Sanskrit, Prakrit, and others, and knowledgeable in numerous scriptures and arts, is regarded as an excellent speaker. ॥130॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 131

नाङ्गुलीभन्जनं कुर्यान्न भ्रुवौ नर्तयेद् ब्रुवन् । नाधिक्षिपेन्न च हसेन्नात्युच्चैनं शनैर्वदेत् ॥१३१।।

वक्ता को चाहिए कि वह कथा कहते समय अंगुलियाँ नहीं चटकावे, न भौंह ही चलावें, न किसी पर आक्षेप करे, न हँसे, न जोर से बोले और न धीरे ही बोले ।।131।।

A speaker should ensure that while narrating a story, they do not snap their fingers, raise their eyebrows, criticize anyone, laugh unnecessarily, speak too loudly, or too softly. ॥131॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 132

 उच्चैः प्रभाषितव्यं स्यात् सभामध्ये कदाचन । तत्राप्यनुद्धतं ब्रूयाद् वचः सभ्यमनाकुलम् ॥१३२॥

यदि कदाचित् सभा के बीच में जोर से बोलना पड़े तो उद्धतपना छोड़कर सत्य प्रमाणित वचन इस प्रकार बोले जिससे किसी को क्षोभ न हो ।।132।।

If, at times, speaking loudly becomes necessary in the assembly, they should avoid arrogance and express truthful and substantiated words in such a way that no one feels offended. ॥132॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 133

हितं ब्रूयान्मितं ब्रूयाद् ब्रूयाद् धर्म्य यशस्करम् । प्रसङ्गादपि न ब्रूयादधम्र्म्यमयशस्करम् ॥१३३॥

 वक्ता को हमेशा वही वचन बोलना चाहिए जो हितकारी हो, परिमित हो, धर्मोपदेश से सहित हो और यश को करने वाला हो । अवसर आने पर भी अधर्मयुक्त तथा अकीर्ति को फैलाने वाले वचन नहीं कहना चाहिए ।।133।।

A speaker should always speak words that are beneficial, concise, aligned with religious teachings, and promote virtue and fame. Even when the opportunity arises, they should not utter words that are unrighteous or spread dishonor. ॥133॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 134

इत्यालोच्य कथायुक्तिमयुक्तिपरिहारिणीम् । प्रस्तूयाद् यः कथावस्तु स शस्तो वदतां वरः ॥१३४॥

इस प्रकार अयुक्तियों का परिहार करने वाली कथा की युक्तियों का सम्यक् प्रकार से विचार कर जो वर्णनीय कथावस्तु का प्रारंभ करता है वह प्रशंसनीय श्रेष्ठ वक्ता समझा जाता है ।।134।।

A speaker who carefully considers the proper reasoning of the narrative, avoiding fallacies, and then begins the description of the subject matter is regarded as a commendable and excellent orator. ॥134॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 135 – 136

आक्षेपिणीं कथां कुर्यात् प्राज्ञः स्वमतसंग्रहे । विक्षेपिणीं कथां तज्ज्ञः कुर्याद् दुर्मतनिग्रहे ॥१३५॥

संवेदिनीं कथां पुण्यफलसंपत्प्रपञ्चने । निर्वेदिनीं कथां कुर्याद् वैराग्यजननं प्रति ॥१३६॥

बुद्धिमान वक्ता को चाहिए कि वह अपने मत की स्थापना करते समय आक्षेपिणी कथा कहे, मिथ्या मत का खंडन करते समय विक्षेपिणी कथा कहे, पुण्य के फलस्वरूप विभूति आदि का वर्णन करते समय संवेदिनी कथा कहे तथा वैराग्य उत्पादन के समय निर्वेदिनी कथा कहे ।।135-136।।

A wise speaker should employ different types of narratives based on the context:

• While establishing their own viewpoint, they should use Akshepini Katha (a narrative that addresses objections).
• When refuting false doctrines, they should use Vikshepini Katha (a narrative that dispels misconceptions).
• While describing prosperity and other results of virtuous deeds, they should use Samvedini Katha (a narrative that evokes awareness and joy).
• To inspire detachment, they should use Nirvedini Katha (a narrative that fosters dispassion). ॥135–136॥

श्लोक 106 से 116 काव्य और धर्मकथा की महिमा

धर्मकथा यश और पुण्य का मूलधन है। यह कथा धर्मशास्त्र से संबंधित है। इसमें ऋषभनाथ जैसे महापुरुषों का चरित्र है। यह कल्पलता-सी फलदायी, सरोवर-सी गंभीर, आकाशगंगा-सी पवित्र, और दर्पण-सी प्रतिबिंबित है। यह मिथ्यामत नष्ट करती और वैराग्य बढ़ाती है। इसे सज्जन सुनें।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 1- Shlok 106 to 116

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 106

यशोधनं चिचीषूणां पुण्यपुण्यपणायिनाम् । परं मूल्यमिहाम्नातं काव्यं धर्मकथामयम् ।।१०६।।

जो पुरुष यशरूपी धन का संचय और पुण्यरूपी पण्य का व्यवहार-लेनदेन करना चाहते हैं उनके लिए धर्मकथा को निरूपण करने वाला यह काव्य मूलधन (पूँजी) के समान माना गया है ।।106।।

106. For those who wish to accumulate the wealth of fame and engage in the exchange of the merchandise of virtue, this poetry, which elucidates the path of righteousness, is considered akin to foundational capital.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 107

इदमध्यवसायाहं कथां धर्मानुबन्धिनीम् । प्रस्तुवे प्रस्तुतां सद्भिर्महापुरुषगोचराम् ॥१०७॥

यह निश्चय कर मैं ऐसी कथा को आरंभ करता हूँ जौ धर्मशास्त्र से संबंध रखने वाली है, जिसका प्रारंभ अनेक सज्जन पुरुषों के द्वारा किया गया है तथा जिसमें ऋषभनाथ आदि महापुरुषों के जीवनचरित्र का वर्णन किया गया है ।।107।।

107. With this conviction, I begin a narrative that is related to the scriptures of dharma, initiated by many noble individuals, and depicts the lives of great souls like Rishabhanatha.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 108-116

विस्तीर्णानेकशाखाढ्यां सच्छायां फलशालिनीम् । आर्यैर्निषेवितां रम्यां सतीं कल्पलतामिव ॥१०

प्रसन्नामतिगम्भीरां निर्मलां सुखशीतलाम् । “निर्वापितजगत्तापां महतीं सरसोमिव ॥१०९॥

गुरुप्रवाहसंभूतिमपङ्कां तापविच्छिदम् । कृतात्रतारां कृतिभिः पुण्यां व्योमापगामिव ॥११०॥

चेतःप्रसादजननीं कृतमङ्गलसंग्रहाम् । क्रोडीकृतजगद्विम्बां हसन्तीं दर्पणश्रियम् ॥१११॥

कल्या‌द्विपादिवोत्तुङ्गादमीष्टफलदायिनः । महाशाखामिवोदग्रां श्रुतस्कन्धादुपाहृताम् ॥ ११२।।

प्रथमस्यानुयोगस्य गम्भीरस्योदधेरपि । वेलामित्र बृहद्ध्वानां प्रसृतार्थ महाजलाम् ॥११३॥”

आक्षिप्ताशेषतन्त्रार्थी विक्षिप्तपरशासनाम् । सतां संवेगजननीं निर्वेदरसबृंहिणीम् ॥११४॥

अद्भुतार्थामिमां दिव्यां परमार्थबृहत्कथाम् । लम्भैरनेकैः संदृब्धां गुणाढ्यैः पूर्वसूरिभिः ॥११५॥

यशःश्रेयस्करीं पुण्यां भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदाम् । पूर्वानुपूर्वीमाश्रित्य वक्ष्ये शृणुत सज्जनाः ॥११६॥

जो धर्मकथा कल्पलता के समान, फैली हुई अनेक शाखाओं (डालियों, कथा-उपकथाओं) से सहित है, छाया (अनातप, कांति नामक गुण) से युक्त है, फलों (मधुर फल, स्वर्ग मोक्षादि की प्राप्ति) से शोभायमान है, आर्यों भोगभूमिज मनुष्य, श्रेष्ठ पुरुषों द्वारा सेवित है, मनोहर है, और उत्तम है । अथवा जो धर्मकथा बड़े सरोवर के समान प्रसन्न (स्वच्छ, प्रसादगुण से सहित) है, अत्यंत गंभीर (अगाध, गूढ़ अर्थ से युक्त) है, निर्मल (कीचड़ आदि से रहित, दुःश्रवत्व आदि रोगों से रहित) है, सुखकारी है, शीतल है, और जगत्त्रय के संताप को दूर करने वाली है । अथवा जो धर्मकथा आकाशगंगा के समान गुरुप्रवाह (बड़े भारी प्रवाह, गुरुपरंपरा से युक्त है, पंक (कीचड़, दोष) से रहित है, ताप (गरमी, संसारभ्रमणजन्य खेद) को नष्ट करने वाली है, कुशल पुरुषों (देवों, गणधरादि चतुर पुरुषों द्वारा किये गये अवतार (प्रवेश, अवगाहन) से सहित है और पुण्य (पवित्र, पुण्यवर्धक) रूप है । अथवा जो धर्मकथा चित्त को प्रसन्न करने, सब प्रकार के मंगलों का संग्रह करने तथा अपने आप में जगत्त्रय के प्रतिबिंबित करने के कारण दर्पण की शोभा को हँसती हुई-सी जान पड़ती है । अथवा जो धर्मकथा अत्यंत उन्नत और अभीष्ट फल को देने वाले श्रुतस्कंधरूपी कल्पवृक्ष से प्राप्त हुई श्रेष्ठ बड़ी शाखा के समान शोभायमान हो रही है । अथवा जो धर्मकथा प्रथमानुयोगरूपी गहरे समुद्र की बेला (किनारे) के समान महागंभीर शब्दों से सहित है और फैले हुए महान् अर्थ रूप जल से युक्त है । जो धर्मकथा स्वर्ग मोक्षादि के साधक समस्त तंत्रों का निरूपण करने वाली है, मिथ्यामत को नष्ट करने वाली है, सज्जनों के संवेग को पैदा करने वाली और वैराग्य रस को बढ़ाने वाली है । जो धर्मकथा आश्चर्यकारी अर्थों से भरी हुई है, अत्यंत मनोहर है, सत्य अथवा परम प्रयोजन को सिद्ध करने वाली है, अनेक बड़ी-बड़ी कथाओं से युक्त है, गुणवान् पूर्वाचायों द्वारा जिसकी रचना की गयी है जो यश तथा कल्याण को करने वाली है, पुण्यरूप है और स्वर्गमोक्षादि फलों को देने वाली है ऐसी उस धर्मकथा को मैं पूर्व आचार्यों की आम्नाय के अनुसार कहूँगा । हे सज्जन पुरुषों, उसे तुम सब ध्यान से सुनो ।।108-116।।

108-116. This narrative of dharma is akin to a celestial vine, adorned with numerous branches (subplots and stories), imbued with shade (qualities like calmness and brilliance), and bearing sweet fruits (such as heavenly pleasures and liberation). It is cherished by noble beings, enjoyed by superior individuals, pleasing to the heart, and supremely excellent.
Alternatively, this narrative resembles a great lake—serene (clear and endowed with the quality of lucidity), profoundly deep (rich with profound meanings), pure (free of impurities and distractions), delightful, soothing, and capable of alleviating the suffering of the three worlds.
Or it is like the Milky Way in the sky—flowing with a grand and continuous stream (symbolizing the tradition of the great preceptors), free of impurities, dispelling the heat (anguish of worldly wandering), adorned by the immersion of skilled souls (such as divine beings and accomplished individuals), and embodying sacred virtue.
It could also be seen as a mirror that brings joy to the heart, collects all forms of auspiciousness, and reflects within itself the entirety of the three worlds.
This narrative shines like a majestic branch derived from the sacred tree of scriptural wisdom, which is both elevated and capable of granting the desired results.
Alternatively, it resembles the shoreline of the vast ocean of the Prathamanuyoga (the first branch of Jain scriptures)—filled with profound words and expansive waters of significant meaning.
This narrative expounds on all texts conducive to attaining heaven and liberation, destroys false beliefs, inspires noble sentiments in virtuous people, and enhances the flavor of renunciation.
It is replete with marvelous meanings, exceedingly captivating, aimed at fulfilling the ultimate purpose, and enriched with numerous grand stories. It has been composed by virtuous preceptors of the past, promotes fame and well-being, embodies virtue, and bestows the fruits of heaven and liberation.
I shall narrate this sacred account according to the teachings of the ancient preceptors. O virtuous souls, listen to it attentively.

काव्य अलंकार, रस, और मौलिक होना चाहिए। रीति, लालित्य, रसहीन काव्य ग्रामीण भाषा है। महाकवि प्राचीन इतिहास और धर्म रचते हैं। शब्द, रस, छंद सुलभ होने से कविता में दरिद्रता नहीं। कवि को महाकवियों की छाया लेनी चाहिए। प्रतिभा और गुणों से काव्य यश देता है।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 1- Shlok 96 to 105

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 96

सालंकार मुपारूढरसमु‌द्भूतसौष्ठवम् । अनुच्छिष्टं सतां काव्यं सरस्वत्या मुखायते ॥९६॥

सज्जन पुरुषों का बनाया हुआ जो काव्य अलंकारसहित, शृंगारादि रसों से युक्त, सौंदर्य से ओतप्रोत और उच्छिष्टता रहित अर्थात् मौलिक होता है वह काव्य सरस्वतीदेवी के मुख के समान शोभायमान होता है अर्थात् जिस प्रकार शरीर में मुख सबसे प्रधान अंग है उसके बिना शरीर की शोभा और स्थिरता नहीं होती उसी प्रकार सर्व लक्षणपूर्ण काव्य ही सब शास्त्रों में प्रधान है तथा उसके बिना अन्य शास्त्रों की शोभा और स्थिरता नहीं हो पाती ।।96।।

96. Poetry created by noble individuals, adorned with literary embellishments, infused with sentiments like love, brimming with beauty, and free from imitation, is as resplendent as the face of Goddess Saraswati. Just as the face is the most important part of the body, without which the body lacks charm and stability, so too, poetry imbued with all virtues is paramount among all scriptures, and without it, other scriptures lose their appeal and steadiness.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 97

अस्पृष्टवन्धलालित्यमपेतं रसवत्तया । न तत्काव्यमिति ग्राम्य केवलं कटु कर्णयोः ॥९७॥

जिस काव्य में न तो रीति की रमणीयता है, न पदों का लालित्य है और न रस का ही प्रवाह है उसे काव्य नहीं कहना चाहिए वह तो केवल कानों को दुःख देने वाली ग्रामीण भाषा ही हैं ।।97।।

97. A composition devoid of the charm of style, the elegance of words, and the flow of emotions cannot be called poetry; it is merely rustic language that causes discomfort to the ears.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 98

सुश्लिष्टपदविन्यासं प्रबन्धं रचयन्ति ये । श्राव्यबन्धं प्रसन्नार्थ ते महाकवयो मताः ॥९८॥

जो अनेक अर्थों को सूचित करने वाले पदविन्यास से सहित, मनोहर रीतियों से युक्त एवं स्पष्ट अर्थ से उद्भासित प्रबंधों-काव्यों की रचना करते हैं वे महाकवि कहलाते हैं ।।98।।

98. Those who craft compositions enriched with arrangements that convey multiple meanings, adorned with captivating styles, and illuminated by clear interpretations are called great poets.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 99

महापुराणसंबन्धि महानायकगोचरम् । त्रिवर्गफलसंदर्भ महाकाव्यं तदिष्यते ॥९९॥

जो प्राचीनकाल के इतिहास से संबंध रखने वाला हो, जिसमें तीर्थकर चक्रवर्ती आदि महापुरुषों के चरित्र का चित्रण किया गया हो तथा जो धर्म, अर्थ और काम के फल को दिखाने वाला हो उसे महाकाव्य कहते हैं ।।99।।

99. A mahakavya (epic poem) is one that relates to ancient historical events, depicts the lives of great figures like Tirthankaras and Chakravartins, and reveals the fruits of righteousness, wealth, and desire.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 100

निस्तनन्” कतिचिच्छ्लोकान् सर्वोऽपि कुरुते कविः । पूर्वापरार्थघटनैः प्रबन्धो दुष्करो मतः ॥१००

किसी एक प्रकीर्णक विषय को लेकर कुछ श्लोकों की रचना तो सभी कवि कर सकते हैं परंतु पूर्वापर का संबंध मिलाते हुए किसी प्रबंध की रचना करना कठिन कार्य है ।।100।।

100. Any poet can compose a few verses on a minor, isolated subject, but crafting a composition that maintains coherence and continuity throughout is a challenging task.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 101

शब्द। शिरपर्यन्तः स्वाधीनोऽर्थः स्फुटा’ रसाः । सुलभाश्च प्रतिच्छन्दाः कवित्वे का दरिद्रता ॥

जब कि इस संसार में शब्दों का समूह अनंत है, वर्णनीय विषय अपनी इच्छा के आधीन है, रस स्पष्ट हैं और उत्तमोत्तम छंद सुलभ हैं तब कविता करने में दरिद्रता क्या है ? अर्थात् इच्छानुसार सामग्री के मिलने पर उत्तम कविता ही करना चाहिए ।।101।।

101. In this world, where the collection of words is infinite, subjects for description are at one’s discretion, emotions are evident, and excellent meters are readily available, how can there be any scarcity in poetry? In other words, with all the necessary resources at hand, one should create only exceptional poetry.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 102

‘प्रयान्महति वाङ्‌मार्गे खिन्नोऽर्थगेहनाटनैः । महाकवितरुच्छायां विथमायाश्रयेत् कविः ॥१०२॥

विशाल शब्दमार्ग में भ्रमण करता हुआ जो कवि अर्थरूपी सघन वनों में घूमने से खेद-खिन्नता को प्राप्त हआ है उसे विश्राम के लिए महाकविरूप वृक्षों की छाया का आश्रय लेना चाहिए । अर्थात् जिस प्रकार महावृक्षों की छाया से मार्ग की थकावट दूर हो जाती है और चित्त हलका हो जाता है उसी प्रकार महाकवियों के काव्यग्रंथों के परिशीलन से अर्थाभाव से होने वाली सब खिन्नता दूर हो जाती है और चित्त प्रसन्न हो जाता है ।।102।।

102. A poet wandering through the vast pathways of words, weary from navigating the dense forests of meanings, should seek solace under the shade of great poets. Just as the shade of great trees soothes the exhaustion of a traveler, studying the works of great poets alleviates the fatigue of grappling with a lack of clarity in meaning and refreshes the mind.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 103

 प्रज्ञामूलो गुणोदग्रस्कन्धो वाक्पलवोज्ज्वलः । महाकवितरुर्धत्ते यशःकुसुममञ्जरीम् ॥१०३॥

प्रतिभा जिसकी जड़ है, माधुर्य, ओज, प्रसाद आदि गुण जिसकी उन्नत शाखाएँ है, और उत्तम शब्द ही जिसके उज्जवल पत्ते हैं ऐसा यह महाकविरूपी वृक्ष यशरूपी पुष्पमंजरी को धारण करता है ।।103।।

103. This great poet-tree, whose root is creativity, whose lofty branches are the virtues of sweetness, vigor, and clarity, and whose radiant leaves are refined words, bears the blossoms of fame.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 104

प्रज्ञावेलः प्रसादोर्मिर्गुणरत्नपरिग्रहः । महाध्वानः पृथुस्त्रोताः कविरम्मोनिधीयते ॥१०४।।

अथवा बुद्धि ही जिसके किनारे है, प्रसाद आदि गुण ही जिसमें लहरे हैं, जो गुणरूपी रत्नों से भरा हुआ है, उच्च और मनोहर शब्दों से युक्त है, तथा जिसमें गुरुशिष्य परंपरा रूप विशाल प्रवाह चला आ रहा है ऐसा यह महाकवि समुद्र के समान आचरण करता है ।।104।।

104. Alternatively, consider this great poet as akin to a vast ocean, whose shores are bounded by intellect, whose waves are virtues like clarity, filled with the jewels of literary qualities, resonant with sublime and pleasing words, and sustained by the vast stream of the teacher-disciple tradition.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 105

यथोक्तमुपयुञ्जीध्वं बुधाः काव्यरसायनम् । येन कल्पान्तरस्थाथि वपुर्वः स्याद् यशोमयम् ।।१०५।।

हे विद्वान् पुरुषो ! तुम लोग ऊपर कहे हुए काव्यरूपी रसायन का भरपूर उपयोग करो जिससे कि तुम्हारा यशरूपी शरीर कल्पांत काल तक स्थिर रह सके । भावार्थ―जिस प्रकार रसायन सेवन करने से शरीर पुष्ट हो जाता है उसी प्रकार ऊपर कहे हुए काव्य, महाकवि आदि के स्वरूप को समझकर कविता करनेवाले का यश चिरस्थायी हो जाता है ।।105।।

105. O learned ones! Make abundant use of the poetic elixir described above so that your fame may endure for ages. Meaning: Just as consuming elixirs strengthens the body, understanding the nature of poetry and great poets as described above ensures the everlasting renown of the poet.

दुर्जन धर्मकथा से दुखी, सज्जन प्रसन्न होते हैं। मिथ्यादृष्टि को ओषधि अरुचिकर लगती है। दुर्जन स्वभाव से टेढ़े, सज्जन जगत को सज्जन नहीं बना पाते। सज्जनता-दुर्जनता का स्वभाव बताया। कवि सज्जनों के आश्रय से काव्य समुद्र पार करना चाहता है।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 86

असतां दूयते चित्तं श्रुत्वा धर्मकथां सतीम् । मन्त्रविद्यामिवाकर्ण्य महाग्रहविकारिणाम् ॥८६॥

जिस प्रकार मंत्रविद्या को सुनकर भूत, पिशाचादि महाग्रहों से पीड़ित मनुष्यों का मन दुःखी होता है उसी प्रकार निर्दोष धर्मकथा को सुनकर दुर्जनों का मन दुःखी होता है ।।86।।

86. Just as hearing mantras disturbs the minds of people afflicted by ghosts, spirits, and other malicious forces, similarly, listening to a flawless religious discourse agitates the minds of wicked individuals.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 87

मिथ्यात्वदूषितधियामरुच्यं धर्मभेषजम् । सदप्यसदिवाभाति तेषां पित्तजुषामिव ॥८७॥

जिन पुरुषों की बुद्धि मिथ्यात्व से दूषित होती है उन्हें धर्मरूपी ओषधि तो अरुचिकर मालूम होती ही है साथ में उत्तमोत्तम अन्य पदार्थ भी बुरे मालूम होते हैं जैसे कि पित्तज्वर वाले को ओषधि या अन्य दुग्ध आदि उत्तम पदार्थ भी बुरे-कड़वे मालूम होते हैं ।।87।।

87. People whose intellect is corrupted by falsehood find the medicine of religion unappealing. Along with that, even other excellent things appear unpleasant to them, just as a person suffering from bile-induced fever finds medicine or nourishing items like milk bitter and distasteful.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 88

सुभाषितमहामन्त्रान् प्रयुक्तान् कविमन्त्रिभिः । श्रुत्वा प्रकोपमायान्ति दुर्ब्रहा इव दुर्जनाः ॥८८॥

कविरूप मंत्रवादियों के द्वारा प्रयोग में लाये हुए सुभाषित रूप मंत्रों को सुनकर दुर्जन पुरुष भूतादि ग्रहों के समान प्रकोप को प्राप्त होते हैं ।।88।।

88. Wicked individuals react with rage, akin to malevolent spirits, upon hearing the refined, virtuous mantras spoken by poets.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 89

चिरप्र रूढदुर्ग्रन्थिवेणुमूलसमोऽनृजुः । नर्जूकत्तुं खलः शक्यः श्वपुच्छसदृशोऽथवा ॥८९॥

जिस प्रकार बहुत दिन से जमे हुए बाँस की गाँठदार जड़ स्वभाव से टेढ़ी होती है उसे कोई सीधा नहीं कर सकता उसी प्रकार चिरसंचित मायाचार से पूर्ण दुर्जन मनुष्य भी स्वभाव से टेढ़ा होता है उसे कोई सीधा-सरल परिणामी नही कर सकता अथवा जिस तरह कोई कुत्ते की पूँछ को सीधा नहीं कर सकता उसी तरह दुर्जन को भी सीधा नहीं कर सकता ।।89।।

89. Just as the knotty, aged root of bamboo remains naturally twisted and cannot be straightened, so too, a wicked person steeped in longstanding deceit and hypocrisy remains inherently crooked and cannot be made straightforward—just as a dog’s tail cannot be straightened.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 90

सुजनः सुजनीकर्तुमशक्तो यच्चिरादपि । खलः खलीकरोत्येव जगदाशु तदद्भुतम् ।।90।।

यह एक आश्चर्य की बात है कि सज्जन पुरुष चिरकाल के सतत प्रयत्न से भी जगत् को अपने समान सज्जन बनाने के लिए समर्थ नहीं हो पाते परंतु दुर्जन पुरुष उसे शीघ्र ही दुष्ट बना लेते हैं ।।90।।

90. It is astonishing that, despite constant and prolonged efforts, virtuous people are unable to transform the world into their image of goodness, while wicked individuals swiftly corrupt it.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 91&92

सौजन्यस्य परा कोटिरनसूया दयालुता । गुणपक्षानुरागश्च दौर्जन्यस्य विपर्ययः ॥९१॥

स्वभावमिति निश्चित्य सुजनस्येतरस्य च । सुजनेष्वनुरागो नो दुर्जनेष्ववधीरणाः ॥९२॥

ईर्ष्या नहीं करना, दया करना तथा गुणी जीवों से प्रेम करना यह सज्जनता की अंतिम अवधि है और इसके विपरीत अर्थात् ईर्ष्या करना, निर्दयी होना तथा गुणी जीवों से प्रेम नहीं करना यह दुर्जनता की अंतिम अवधि है । यह सज्जन और दुर्जनों का स्वभाव ही है ऐसा निश्चय कर सज्जनों में न तो विशेष राग ही करना चाहिए और न दुर्जनों का अनादर ही करना चाहिए ।।91-92।।

91-92. To feel no envy, to be compassionate, and to love virtuous beings—this is the ultimate nature of goodness. Conversely, to harbor jealousy, be unkind, and lack love for the virtuous is the ultimate nature of wickedness. Recognizing this as the inherent nature of the good and the wicked, one should neither excessively attach oneself to the good nor disregard the wicked.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 93

कवीनां कृतिनिर्वाहे सतो मत्वावलम्बनम्। कविताम्मोधिमुद्वेलं लिलङ्घयिषुरस्म्यहम् ॥९३॥

कवियों के अपने कर्तव्य की पूर्ति में सज्जन पुरुष ही अवलंबन होते हैं ऐसा मानकर मैं अलंकार, गुण, रीति आदि लहरों से भरे हुए कवितारूपी समुद्र को लाँघना चाहता हूँ अर्थात् सत्पुरुषों के आश्रय से ही मैं इस महान् काव्य ग्रंथ को पूर्ण करना चाहता हूँ ।।93।।

93. Accepting that virtuous individuals are the true support for fulfilling a poet’s duties, I aim to cross the ocean of poetry, which is filled with waves of embellishments, qualities, and styles. In other words, I intend to complete this great poetic work with the help of the noble.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 94

कवेर्भावोऽथवा कर्म काव्यं तज्ज्ञैर्निरुच्यते । तत्प्रतीतार्थमग्राम्यं सालंकारमनाकुलम् ॥९४॥

काव्यस्वरूप के जानने वाले विद्वान, कवि के भाव अथवा कार्य को काव्य कहते हैं । कवि का वह काव्य सर्वसंमत अर्थ से सहित, ग्राम्यदोष से रहित, अलंकार से युक्त और प्रसाद आदि गुणों से शोभित होना चाहिए ।।94।।

94. Scholars knowledgeable about poetry define a poet’s creative thoughts or expressions as poetry. A poet’s composition should be universally agreeable, free of vulgar faults, adorned with literary embellishments, and enriched with virtues like clarity and elegance.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 95

केचिदर्थस्य सौन्दर्यमपरे पदसौष्ठवम् । वाचामलंक्रियां प्राहुस्तद्द्वयं नो मतं मतम् ॥९५॥

कितने ही विद्वान् अर्थ की सुंदरता को वाणी का अलंकार कहते हैं और कितने ही पदों की सुंदरता को, किंतु हमारा मत है कि अर्थ और पद दोनों की सुंदरता ही वाणी का अलंकार है ।।95।।

95. Some scholars consider the beauty of meaning to be the ornament of speech, while others attribute this to the beauty of words. However, I believe that the beauty of both meaning and words together constitutes the true ornament of speech.

श्लोक 76 से 85 सज्जन-दुर्जन का स्वभाव

कवि को अपना प्रयोजन सिद्ध करना चाहिए, सबको संतुष्ट करना असंभव। लोग शब्द, अर्थ, समास आदि में भिन्न रुचि रखते हैं। सज्जन गुण, दुर्जन दोष ग्रहण करते हैं। दुर्जन निर्दोष कथा को दूषित करते हैं, सज्जन दोषयुक्त को निर्दोष बनाते हैं।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 1- Shlok 76 to 85

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 76

 परे तुष्यन्तु वा मा वा कविः स्वार्थं प्रतीहताम् । न पराराधनाच्छ्रेयः श्रेयः सन्मार्गदेशनात् ॥७६॥

अन्यजन संतुष्ट हों अथवा नहीं कवि को अपना प्रयोजन पूर्ण करने के प्रति ही उद्यम करना चाहिए । क्योंकि कल्याण की प्राप्ति अन्य पुरुषों की आराधना से नहीं होती किंतु श्रेष्ठ मार्ग के उपदेश से होती है ।।76।।

76. Whether others are pleased or not, a poet should focus solely on fulfilling their purpose. For true well-being is not achieved by seeking others’ approval but through the teaching of the noble path.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 77

पुराणकवयः केचित् केचिन्नवकवीश्वराः । तेषां मतानि भिन्नानि कस्तदाराधने क्षमः ॥७७॥

कितने ही कवि प्राचीन हैं और कितने ही नवीन है तथा उन सबके मत जुदे-जुदे है अत: उन सबको प्रसन्न करने के लिए कौन समर्थ हो सकता है ? ।।77।।

77. There are many ancient poets and many new ones, each holding different opinions. Who can possibly satisfy all of them?

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 78

कंचित् सौशब्द्यमिच्छन्ति केचिदर्थस्य संपदम् । केचित् समासभूयस्त्वं परे व्यस्तां पदावलीम् ॥७८॥

क्योंकि कोई शब्दों की सुंदरता को पसंद करते हैं, कोई मनोहर अर्थसंपत्ति को चाहते हैं, कोई समास की अधिकता को अच्छा मानते हैं और कोई पृथक्-पृथक् रहने वाली अलमस्त पदावली को ही चाहते हैं ।।78।।

78. Some admire the beauty of words, some seek delightful richness of meaning, some prefer an abundance of concise expressions, while others favor a distinct and unadorned style.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 79

मृदुबन्धार्थिनः केचित् स्फुटबन्धैषिणः परं । मध्यमाः केचिदन्येषां रुचिरन्यैव लक्ष्यते ॥७९॥

कोई मृदुल-सरल रचना को चाहते हैं, कोई कठिन रचना को चाहते हैं, कोई मध्यम श्रेणी की रचना पसंद करते हैं और कोई ऐसे भी है जिनकी रुचि सबसे विलक्षण-अनोखी है ।।79।।

79. Some prefer gentle and straightforward compositions, others desire intricate ones, some appreciate a moderate approach, and yet others have the most unusual and peculiar tastes.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 80

इति भिन्नाभिसन्धित्वा द्वाराधा मनीषिणः । पृथक्जनोऽपि सूक्तानामनभिज्ञः सुदुर्महः ॥८०॥

इस प्रकार भिन्न-भिन्न विचार होने के कारण बुद्धिमान् पुरुषों को प्रसन्न करना कठिन कार्य है । तथा सुभाषितों से सर्वथा अपरिचित रहने वाले मूर्ख मनुष्य को वश में करना उनकी अपेक्षा भी कठिन कार्य है ।।80।।

80. Due to these diverse perspectives, pleasing the wise is a challenging task. Even more difficult is persuading the ignorant, who remain entirely unfamiliar with refined expressions.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 81

सतीमपि कथां रम्यां दूषयन्त्येव दुर्जनाः । भुजङ्गा इव सच्छायां चन्दनद्रमवल्लरीम् ॥८१॥

दुष्ट पुरुष निर्दोष और मनोहर कथा को भी दूषित कर देते हैं, जैसे चंदनवृक्ष की मनोहर कांति से युक्त नयी कोपलों को सर्प दूषित कर देते हैं ।।81।।

81. Wicked individuals corrupt even flawless and captivating narratives, just as a serpent contaminates the tender, radiant sprouts of a sandalwood tree.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 82

सदोषामपि निदोंषां करोति सुजनः कृतिम् । ‘धनात्यय इवापङ्कां सरसीं पङ्कदूषिताम् ॥८२॥

परंतु सज्जन पुरुष सदोष रचना को भी निर्दोष बना देते हैं जैसे कि शरद् ऋतु पंक सहित सरोवरों को पंकरहित-निर्मल बना देती है ।।82।।

82. However, virtuous people enhance even flawed compositions, much like the autumn season purifies muddy ponds, making them clear and pristine.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 83

दुर्जना दोषमिच्छन्ति गुणमिच्छन्ति सज्जनाः । स तेषां क्षेत्रजो भावो दुश्चिकित्स्यश्चिरादपि ॥८३॥

दुर्जन पुरुष दोषों को चाहते हैं और सज्जन पुरुष गुणों को । उनका यह सहज स्वभाव है जिसकी चिकित्सा बहुत समय में भी नहीं हो सकती अर्थात् उनका यह स्वभाव किसी प्रकार भी नहीं छूट सकता ।।83।।

83. Wicked individuals naturally gravitate toward faults, while virtuous individuals seek virtues. This inherent nature cannot be altered, no matter how much time passes.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 84

यतो गुणधनाः सन्तो दुर्जना दोषवित्तकाः । स्वधनं गृह्णतां तेषां कः प्रत्यर्थी बुधो जनः ॥८४॥

जब कि सज्जनों का धन गुण है और दुर्जनों का धन दोष, तब उन्हें अपना-अपना धन ग्रहण कर लेने में भला कौन बुद्धिमान् पुरुष बाधक होगा ? ।।84।।

84. When virtues are the wealth of the noble and faults are the wealth of the wicked, who would obstruct them from gathering their respective treasures?

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 85

दोषान् गृह्णन्तु वा कामं गुणास्तिष्ठन्तु नः स्फुटम् । गृहीतदोषं यत्काव्यं जायते तद्धि पुष्कलम् ॥८५॥

अथवा दुर्जन पुरुष हमारे काव्य से दोषों को ग्रहण कर लेवें जिससे गुण-ही-गुण रह जायें यह बात हमको अत्यंत इष्ट है क्योंकि जिस काव्य से समस्त दोष निकाल लिये गये हों वह काव्य निर्दोष होकर उत्तम हो जायेगा ।।85।।

85. Indeed, if wicked individuals extract flaws from our poetry, leaving only virtues behind, we welcome this wholeheartedly. For a composition from which all defects have been removed becomes flawless and excellent.

श्लोक 56 से 65 वीरसेन और कविता की महत्ता

वीरसेन, जयसेन आदि गुरुओं की प्रशंसा, जो धवलाटीका रचते हैं और शास्त्रज्ञ हैं। कविता धर्म से संबंधित होनी चाहिए, अन्यथा पाप का कारण बनती है। मिथ्यादृष्टि काव्य सज्जनों को संतुष्ट नहीं करता। कुछ कवि हास्यास्पद प्रयास करते हैं।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 56

 लोकवित्त्वं कवित्वं च स्थितं भट्टारके द्वयम् । वामिता ऽवाङ्मिता यस्य वाचा वाचस्पतेरपि ॥५६

 जो लोकव्यवहार तथा काव्यस्वरूप के महान् ज्ञाता है तथा जिनकी वाणी के सामने औरों की तो बात ही क्या, स्वयं सुरगुरु बृहस्पति की वाणी भी सीमित-अल्प जान पड़ती है 56

May the great scholar, who is a profound knower of both worldly conduct and the essence of poetry, and whose speech surpasses all others—indeed, even the speech of the divine teacher Brihaspati seems limited in comparison—bless us. ॥56॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 57

सिद्धान्तोपनिबन्धानां विधातुर्मद्गुरोश्चिरम् । मन्मनःसरसि स्थेयान् मृदुपादकुशेशयम् ॥५७॥

 धवलादि सिद्धांतों के ऊपर अनेक उपनिबंध-प्रकरणों के रचने वाले हमारे गुरु श्रीवीरसेन भट्टारक के कोमल चरणकमल हमेशा हमारे मनरूप सरोवर में विद्यमान रहे ।।57।।

May the gentle lotus feet of our Guru, Shri Veerasena Bhattaraka, who authored numerous treatises on the principles of Dhvaladi and other doctrines, always remain in the reservoir of our minds. ॥57॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 58

धवलां भारतीं तस्य कीर्ति च विधुनिर्मलाम् । धवलीकृतनिश्शेषभुवनां निन्नमीम्यहम् ॥५८॥

श्रीवीरसेन गुरु की धवल, चंद्रमा के समान निर्मल और समस्त लोक को धवल करने वाली वाणी (धवलाटीका) तथा कीर्ति को मैं बार-बार नमस्कार करता हूँ ।।58।।

I repeatedly bow to the speech (Dhvalatika) of Shri Veerasena Guru, which is as pure as the moon, shining brilliantly and illuminating the entire world, as well as his glorious fame. ॥58॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 59

जन्मभूमिस्तपोलक्ष्म्याः श्रुतप्रशमयोर्निधिः । जयसेनगुरुः पातु बुधवृन्दाग्रणीः स नः ॥५९।।

वे जयसेन गुरु हमारी रक्षा करें जो कि तपोलक्ष्मी के जन्मदाता थे, शास्त्र और शांति के भंडार थे,

May Guru Jaysena, the giver of the radiance of penance (Tapolaxmi), and the treasure of scriptures and peace, protect us.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 60

स पूज्यः कविभिर्लोके कत्रीनां परमेश्वरः । वागर्थसंग्रहं कृत्स्नं पुराणं यः समग्रहीत् ।।६०।।

विद्वानों के समूह के अग्रणी-प्रधान थे, वे कवि परमेश्वर लोक में कवियों द्वारा पूज्य थे जिन्होंने शब्द और अर्थ के संग्रहरूप समस्त पुराण का संग्रह किया था ।।60।।

He was the leader and chief of the assembly of scholars, the supreme poet who was revered by poets in the world, and who collected the entire Purana in the form of the compilation of words and meanings. ॥60॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 61

कवयोऽन्येऽपि सन्त्येचकस्तानुद्देष्टुमप्यलम् । सत्कृता ये जगत्पूज्यास्ते मया मङ्गलाथिना

इन ऊपर कहे हुए कवियों के सिवाय और भी अनेक कवि हैं उनका गुणगान तो दूर रहा नाम मात्र भी कहने में कौन समर्थ हो सकता है अर्थात् कोई नहीं । मंगल प्राप्ति की अभिलाषा से मैं उन जगत् पूज्य सभी कवियों का सत्कार करता हूँ ।।61।।

Apart from the poets mentioned above, there are many others whose praise is beyond expression; in fact, who could even speak of them by name? Certainly, no one. With the desire to attain auspiciousness, I offer my respects to all these world-renowned poets. ॥61॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 62

त एव कत्रयो लोके त एव च विचक्षणाः । येषां धर्मकथाङ्गत्वं भारती प्रतिपद्यते ।। ६२।।

संसार में वे ही पुरुष कवि हैं और वे ही चतुर हैं जिनकी कि वाणी धर्मकथा के अंगपने को प्राप्त होती है अर्थात् जो अपनी वाणी-द्वारा धर्मकथा की रचना करते हैं ।।62।।

In this world, those men are true poets and wise, whose speech becomes an integral part of the discourse on Dharma, meaning those who compose religious narratives through their words. ॥62॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 63

धर्मानुबन्धिनी या स्यात् कवित। सैव शस्यते । शेषा पापास्त्रवायैव सुप्रयुक्तापि जायते ।।६३।।

कविता भी वही प्रशंसनीय समझी जाती है जो धर्मशास्त्र से संबंध रखती है । धर्मशास्त्र के संबंध से रहित कविता मनोहर होने पर भी मात्र पापास्रव के लिए होती है ।।63।। 

Poetry is considered praiseworthy only when it is related to the scriptures of Dharma. Even if a poem is beautiful, if it is not connected to Dharma, it serves merely to lead to the flow of sin. ॥63॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 64

केचिन्मध्यादृशः काव्यं प्रथ्नन्ति श्रुतिपेशलम् । तत्त्वधर्मानुबन्धित्वान्न सतां प्रीणनक्षमम् ।।६४।।

कितने ही मिथ्यादृष्टि कानों को प्रिय लगने वाले मनोहर काव्यग्रंथों की रचना करते हैं परंतु उनके वे काव्य अधर्मानुबंधी होने से धर्मशास्त्र के निरूपक न होने से सज्जनों को संतुष्ट नहीं कर सकते ।।64।।

Many misguided individuals compose enchanting poetic works that are pleasing to the ears, but since these works are disconnected from Dharma and do not reflect the essence of the scriptures, they cannot satisfy the virtuous or righteous-minded. ॥64॥

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 65

अव्युत्पन्नतराः केचित् कवित्वाय कृतोद्यमाः । प्रयान्ति हास्यतां लोके मूका इव विवक्षवः ।।६५।।

लोक में कितने ही कवि ऐसे भी हैं जो काव्यनिर्माण के लिए उद्यम करते हैं परंतु वे बोलने की इच्छा रखने वाले गूँगे पुरुष की तरह केवल हँसी को ही प्राप्त होते हैं ।।65।।

There are many poets in the world who strive to create poetry, but like mute men who wish to speak, they only attain ridicule, for their efforts lack true substance. ॥65॥
