Digambar Jain Mandir – Shri Chandraprabha Jinalaya (Pandit Lunkaranji)
Among the historic Jain temples of Jaipur, Shri Chandraprabha Jinalaya (Pandit Lunkaranji) holds a special place. The temple is located on Thakur Pachevar ka Rasta and is renowned for its ancient idols, rare yantras, and a rich manuscript repository.
Construction and Historical Background
The temple was constructed by Tarachand Bilala, son of Diwan Keshavdas, during the reign of Sawai Jai Singh. The construction took place between Vikram Samvat 1773 and 1790.
Although a detailed genealogy of Diwan Tarachand is not available, a temple ledger dated Vikram Samvat 1829 mentions:
“Daskat Tarachand Bilala jaman, paran, maran tyohar dehre karno.”
This indicates his association with important religious ceremonies at the temple. Tarachand Bilala was born in Vikram Samvat 1765.
Pandit Lunkaran and the Scholarly Tradition
The temple is closely associated with the renowned scholar Pandit Lunkaran. The exact details of when and from where he arrived at the temple are not recorded. However, an illustrated manuscript of Yashodhar Charitra dated Vikram Samvat 1788 reveals that Ramchand, son of Tharnasah, presented this manuscript to Pandit Lunkaran. The manuscript also contains illustrations of Pandit Lunkaran, his guru Kheevsi, and Ramchand.
Pandit Lunkaran was a distinguished Sanskrit scholar and an expert in yantra, mantra, tantra, astrology, and Ayurveda. His disciples included Pandit Swaroopchand, Rishabhchand, and Sadasukh, who were also knowledgeable in yantra-mantra practices and were authors of several texts. He was highly respected by the state, and land in Sawai Madhopur and Khandar was granted for the service and worship of the temple deity.
His lineage of disciples continued until Vikram Samvat 1934, after which no new Pandit was appointed.
Principal Deity and Idols
The Mūlanāyaka (principal deity) of the temple is Lord Chandraprabha. The idol, carved from white stone, is extremely graceful and attractive, and it was consecrated in Vikram Samvat 1545.
The temple houses 175 idols and 70 yantras. Among the goddess idols, the most ancient is that of Ambika, consecrated in Vikram Samvat 1451. Beautiful idols of Jwalamalini and Padmavati are also installed here.
Among the Tirthankara idols, the oldest is a metal Choubisi (set of 24 Tirthankaras) consecrated on Vaishakh Shukla 12, Vikram Samvat 1443.
Yantra Worship and Special Significance
The temple has traditionally been an important center for mantra and yantra practices. It houses the rare Vijay Yantra with 1465 compartments, along with many other unique yantras.
The idols of Padmavati, Jwalamalini, Ambika, and the three Kshetrapalas are particularly revered by devotees. Every Friday, large numbers of devotees visit the temple for darshan.
Scriptural Repository
The temple possesses a large and valuable manuscript library containing approximately:
- 850 handwritten manuscripts
- 250 Gutkas (small manuscript booklets)
Their catalogue has been published in Jain Granth Bhandar Suchi – Part 3.
The most notable manuscript preserved here is the illustrated Yashodhar Charitra, which has been carefully mounted in a double-glass frame for protection. Illustrated copies of Bhairav Kalpa and Padmavati Kalpa are also preserved.
The repository also contains mandala diagrams used in rituals, as well as paintings depicting Ravana, Ganesha, Hanuman, Tripura Bhairavi, and several mystical yantras. Old account books provide valuable records of donations, ritual ceremonies, consecrations, yantra-mantra practices, manuscript writing, and visits by religious dignitaries.
Religious Festivals
Several important religious celebrations are held in the temple throughout the year, including:
- Vidhana Puja during the month of Bhadrapada
- Mahavir Nirvana Festival
- Shrut Panchami Festival
- Birth and Nirvana celebrations of Lord Chandraprabha
Development and Administration
In the past 20 years, several development works have been completed, including the construction and renovation of a well, a room in the Bihari section, and verandas for the outer shops.
The temple follows the Bees Panth Amnaya tradition. Its management is carried out by an elected management committee. Although daily scriptural discourses are not held, the scriptural library remains open every evening until 9 PM for study and exchange of books.
Shri Chandraprabha Jinalaya (Pandit Lunkaranji) represents an important center of Jain scholarship, spiritual practice, and cultural heritage. With its ancient idols, rare yantras, and rich manuscript collection, the temple occupies a distinguished place among the historic Jain temples of Jaipur.
