hri Digambar Jain Temple – Chaubis Maharaj (Lala Amichand Tongya)
Shri Digambar Jain Temple Chaubis Maharaj is located on Motisingh Bhomiya Road in Johari Bazaar, Jaipur. This temple was constructed by Lala Amichand Tongya, a resident of Delhi. The construction of the temple was completed by Vikram Samvat 1883, and the idols were installed in the same year. The principal idol of the temple is that of Lord Neminath.
An inscription relating to the construction of the temple reads:
“Shri Digambar Jain Mandir Chaubis Maharaj was built by Lala Amichand Tongya in Vikram Samvat 1883.
On the fifth day of the bright fortnight of the month, Samvat 1883 – servant Amichandji Tongya, resident of Delhi.”
The temple houses a total of 102 idols, most of which are made of stone, and all were consecrated in Vikram Samvat 1883. On the fifth day of the bright fortnight in Samvat 1883, a grand consecration ceremony (Pratishtha Mahotsav) was held in Badi village, where hundreds of large idols were consecrated. This ceremony was also organized by Lala Amichand Tongya of Delhi.
Although Lala Amichand Tongya built the temple in Jaipur, the consecration of the idols was conducted at Badi village (in the Dholpur region). The reason for this arrangement is not known. The consecration ceremony was performed under the guidance of Bhattarak Mahendra Bhushan of Gwalior.
A detailed inscription regarding this event is found on the large idol of Lord Chandraprabhu installed in the temple of Diwan Amar Chand in Jaipur. According to this inscription, the father of Lala Amichand was Shri Mulchand. Amichand had four sons—Chunnilal, Dilwalisinh, Jawaharmal, and Mannalal—and four grandsons—Sadasukh, Nemidas, Shiromandas, and Manohardas. With the cooperation of all these family members, the grand consecration ceremony was performed in Badi town.
Beneath this temple there is a basement (talghar) in which 24 large idols of the 24 Tirthankaras, all of equal size and made of white stone, are installed. Because of this sacred group of twenty-four idols, the temple became popularly known as the Temple of Chaubis Maharaj.
Devotees passing through this passage of the Chaubisi offer their respects and bow their heads in reverence. For visitors and pilgrims coming from outside Jaipur, this Chaubisi is a special attraction. Thus, the temple is considered one of the notable and important temples of Jaipur. The temple also houses a stone idol of Goddess Padmavati and a beautiful idol of Lord Bahubali.
The temple covers an area of about 2,400 square feet. Every Ashtami and Chaturdashi, special worship with musical instruments is performed in the basement, and various religious ceremonies and rituals are also organized. The temple also preserves a wooden palanquin and three wooden elephants. Artistic depictions of Sammed Shikhar are engraved on stone.
The temple belongs to the Bees Panth tradition (Amnaya). Its administration is managed according to established regulations by an elected management committee.
