English Translation of Purushartha Siddhi Upay (Shri Amritchandracharya) Mangala Sanskrit Tika – : Muni shri Pranamya Sagar Maharaj (Under Acharya shri Vidyasagar Maharaj). and ‘Bhavaprakashani’ Hindi tika by Pandit Munnalal Randheliya Varni.

Utthānīkā (Introduction):

In the aforementioned verses written in the Āryā meter, there is a vow to explain the means for achieving spiritual effort (Puruṣārtha-siddhi). Here, a doubt arises: What is the meaning of the word “Puruṣa” (soul or self)? To resolve this doubt, the next sūtra (aphorism) is presented:

अस्ति पुरुषश्चिदात्मा विवर्जित: स्पर्शगन्धरसवर्णै: ।

गुणपर्ययसमवेत: समाहित: समुदयव्ययध्रौव्यै: ॥9॥

Anvaya (Literal Connection):
Puruṣaḥ – The soul (self) is a conscious entity.
Cidātmā asti – It possesses the nature of consciousness.
Sparśa-gandha-rasa-varṇaiḥ vivarjitaḥ – It is devoid of touch, smell, taste, and color.
Guṇa-paryaya-samavetaḥ – It is associated with qualities and modes.
Samudaya-vyaya-dhruvyaiḥ samāhitaḥ – It is situated within creation, destruction, and permanence.

Anvayārtha (Prose Translation):
The soul (puruṣa) is a conscious entity (cidātmā asti), it is devoid of touch, smell, taste, and color (sparśa-gandha-rasa-varṇaiḥ vivarjitaḥ). It is associated with qualities and modes (guṇa-paryaya-samavetaḥ) and is situated within creation, destruction, and permanence (samudaya-vyaya-dhruvyaiḥ samāhitaḥ).

Tīkā (Commentary):
The “Puruṣa” is the conscious soul, meaning the puruṣa is the one who experiences consciousness or possesses the nature of consciousness. According to Sanskrit, “cit” (consciousness) is understood in three ways: the one who experiences, the one through whom the experience happens, or the act of experiencing itself is called “cit.” The word “caitanya” (consciousness) is derived from the root “citi” (to know). It is the power that knows both “self” and “other.” The entity whose soul is consciousness is called “cidātmā” (conscious soul). Thus, the phrase “puruṣaś cidātmā” indicates the characteristic of the soul. There is a distinction between attributes and characteristics. A substance (dravya) has many attributes, but only one defining characteristic. For example, the soul has infinite qualities like knowledge, perception, energy, and existence, but its defining characteristic is only consciousness. Therefore, it is proven that the characteristic (lakṣaṇa) is unique.

Lakṣaṇa (Definition):
In the treatise Nyāya Dīpikā, it is stated that the means by which a particular object is distinguished from among many similar objects is called a “lakṣaṇa” (defining characteristic).

Verse:
The conscious soul, devoid of touch, smell, taste, and color, is associated with qualities and modes, and it is always present in creation, destruction, and permanence.

Doubt: The characteristic of the soul should be knowledge and perception because these two qualities are inherently associated with the soul.
Resolution: That is not the case because, in the non-omniscient (mundane) state, even though knowledge and perception are associated with the soul, they occur sequentially. That is, in the mundane state, perception happens first, and then knowledge follows perception. However, in an omniscient being, both perception and knowledge occur simultaneously. Thus, during the state of perception, when knowledge is absent, the characteristic becomes inconsistent. Therefore, the soul’s characteristic is consciousness. This characteristic is free from the defects of under-coverage, over-coverage, and impossibility.

If someone argues that “the soul’s characteristic is ‘usage’ (upayoga),” that is also incorrect because “usage” is defined as “the outcome that follows consciousness.” Since this definition is well-established in the scriptures, there is no distinction between the two (consciousness and usage).

Here, the word “puruṣa” should not be interpreted to mean a human being because, in this context, “puruṣa” refers to the soul as a substance (ātma dravya). Therefore, the term “puruṣa” should encompass all souls, including those in all four states of existence and the liberated souls (siddha paramātmā).

What is the special characteristic of that puruṣa (soul)? It is devoid of touch, smell, taste, and color. That is, the soul is free from the eight types of touch, two types of smell, five types of taste, and five types of color. The compound word “itaretara dvandva samāsa” is used to signify the absence of touch, smell, taste, and color in the soul. This statement emphasizes that these qualities do not exist in the soul.

Even though, according to the conventional viewpoint (vyavahāra naya), the soul appears to be associated with touch, smell, taste, and color due to its connection with the body, it is impossible to see the soul with the naked eye or a microscope or to know its journey after death, even across the three times (past, present, future). This is because, as stated in Tattvārthasūtra, the last body (kārmaṇa śarīra) is devoid of sensory experiences.

What other characteristic does the soul possess? “Guna-paryaya-samaveta”: The qualities of a substance are eternal. The modes (paryāyas) are transient (momentary) but can also last for a long time. The qualities are inherent in the substance, while the modes are transformations of the substance. The words “paryāya,” “paryaya,” and “parināma” are synonymous. That which possesses qualities and modes should be understood as the soul-substance (jīva dravya). As stated in Tattvārthasūtra, “guṇa-paryāyavad dravyam,” meaning a substance is characterized by qualities and modes.

This describes the substantial nature (dravyatā) of the soul. The inseparability of qualities and modes from the substance is established due to their inherent association with the substance. Even though they are inseparable (apṛthak) from the substance, they are considered somewhat distinct (kathañcit bhinna) and somewhat inseparable (kathañcit abhinna) due to their difference in terms of terminology, number, and characteristic.

Doubt: If the soul is a substance (dravya), what is its essence or reality (sattva)? To resolve this doubt, it is explained that the soul is “samudayavyayadhrauvyaiḥ samāhitaḥ”—meaning it is characterized by production (utpāda), destruction (vyaya), and permanence (dhrauvya). The emergence of a new mode (paryāya) is called production (utpāda), the cessation of a previous mode is called destruction (vyaya), and the continuity of the essence (sattva) through both these modes is called permanence (dhrauvya). This is similar to what is stated in Tattvārthasūtra: “utpāda-vyaya-dhrauvya-yuktaṁ sat”—the real (sat) is that which possesses production, destruction, and permanence.

These three—production, destruction, and permanence—are somewhat distinct from each other because they have different characteristics. For example, curd and ghee are derived from milk, making them essentially the same in substance. However, the destruction of milk leads to the production of curd, and the production of ghee is accompanied by the destruction of curd. Through all these transformations, the substance, which is milk, persists in its essence, making it somewhat the same.

Thus, the nature of production, destruction, and permanence should be understood in relation to each other. As stated:

• One who has vowed to drink milk (dugdhavrata) will not consume curd.
• One who has vowed to consume curd (dahivrata) will not drink milk.
• And one who has vowed to abstain from all dairy products (gorasa-vrata) will not consume either milk or curd.

This indicates that the essence of reality (sat) is triadic in nature—consisting of production, destruction, and permanence.

Production and other attributes are natural qualities of substances. From the perspective of paryāyārthika naya (the viewpoint focused on modes), the moment a substance is produced, it simultaneously undergoes destruction. From the perspective of dravyārthika naya (the viewpoint focused on substance), the substance also persists in existence (sattva) at that very moment. This establishes that every substance is continuously renewed in each moment. Consequently, the liberated souls (siddhas) experience ever-new, unparalleled bliss in every moment.

Because the teachings of Lord Jina, marked by the emblem of syādvāda (doctrine of conditional predication), are eternally fresh and applicable, despite having been in continuous flow since time immemorial like a constant breeze, the Jain doctrine remains an ever-pure and unique current of thought. The powers of production, destruction, and permanence are inherent in all substances by their very nature. There is no external deity like Brahma, Vishnu, or Mahesh who creates, preserves, or destroys the world. In this world, these processes occur naturally in all substances. It should be understood that the power of production is indeed the true power of Brahma, the power of destruction is truly the severing power of Mahesh, and the quality of permanence is indeed Vishnu.

Thus, from the perspective of the pure nishchaya naya (the absolute viewpoint), the nature of the soul is explained.

English Translation

‘Bhavaprakashani’ Hindi tika by Pandit Munnalal Randheliya Varni

Meaning (भावार्थ):

The essence or nature (लक्षण) of a substance can be understood in two ways:

1. Nishchaya (Absolute or True Essence): This represents the real, inherent nature of the substance.
2. Vyavahara (Relative or Practical Essence): This represents a conventional, temporary, or practical understanding of the substance’s nature.

Accordingly, this verse describes the extraordinary (self-real) and true nature of the soul substance (जीवद्रव्य), which is unique and not found in other substances. This true essence remains with the soul eternally and is never separate from it. For example, consciousness (चेतना) is the primary attribute of the soul substance, with which the soul has an eternal and pervasive relationship, thus forming a unity.

Although consciousness is classified into three types:

1. Jnana Chetana (Knowledge Consciousness): This pertains to the awareness of oneself (self-consciousness or self-awareness).
2. Karma Chetana (Action Consciousness): This relates to the awareness of actions (engaging in or refraining from activities).
3. Karma Phala Chetana (Result Consciousness): This pertains to the awareness of the consequences of actions, such as pleasure or pain.

These three types of consciousness are essentially different manifestations of the same consciousness but are categorized based on the objects they relate to.

Out of these, only Jnana Chetana (knowledge consciousness) is attributed to the Samyagdṛṣṭi (right believer or one with true perception). This is because only the Samyagdṛṣṭi is capable of distinguishing between the self and the non-self (the essence and the external), which is beneficial and aligned with truth. The recognition of the difference between the self and the non-self is a function of Samyagdṛṣṭi and not of Mithyādṛṣṭi (wrong believer). The Mithyādṛṣṭi, due to incorrect understanding, fails to recognize the self as distinct from the non-self and instead identifies the self with external attributes, perceiving it as one with the external form.

Consequently, the nature of the soul or substance is distinct from the attributes of the non-self, such as form, taste, etc., that belong to the material substance (pudgala). The soul remains constantly unified with its attributes and modes (गुण-पर्याय), and it possesses the three general qualities of Utpāda (production), Vyaya (destruction), and Dhrauvya (permanence) that are inherent in all substances, as they are the very nature of a substance.

This characteristic of a substance is described in Tattvārthasūtra: “Utpādavyayadhrauvyayuktaṁ sat”—a substance is characterized by the coexistence of production, destruction, and permanence (Chapter 5, Sutras 29, 30).

Each of these characteristics is as follows:

1. Utpāda (Production): The emergence of a new mode, which occurs in every moment and is inherent in the nature of the substance.
2. Vyaya (Destruction): The cessation or absence of the previous mode, which happens every moment.
3. Dhrauvya (Permanence): The constant, enduring nature of the substance, which remains stable despite changes in its modes. This substance is the fundamental entity, although it is subject to changes (parinami dhruva), unlike what other philosophical systems might consider as absolutely permanent (kutastha nitya).

Other characteristics include:

4. Guna (Qualities): These are the attributes that reside in the substance and do not exist independently of it (Tattvārthasūtra 5-41).
5. Paryaya (Modes): These are the changing states of a substance, which, despite changing, remain consistent with the substance itself and do not transform into something entirely different (Tattvārthasūtra 5-42).

In summary, the verse explains the true, inherent nature of the soul substance, emphasizing its distinction from material substances and its constant association with its qualities and modes, all within the framework of Jain philosophy.

Types of Modifications (Paryay):

1. Arthaparyay (Meaning-Modification): This is the modification that changes every moment. Each quality undergoes a transformation in its state, and this change lasts for a moment. It represents the subtle, immediate transformation.
2. Vyajanaparyay (Expressive-Modification): This is the gross, visible modification, which is formed by the combination of modifications over multiple moments. It exists in two forms: Vibhavarup (altered or distorted form) and Swabhavarup (natural form). These two forms are distinct.

Note: This Vibhav Vyajanaparyay occurs only in the substances of Jiva (soul) and Pudgala (matter), and not in the other four substances. (Refer to Alapapaddhati). From the perspective of certainty (Nishchaya Naya), the four characteristics (essence) of Jiva substance — consciousness, distinction from touch, taste, smell, and color, possession of qualities and modifications, and being subject to creation, destruction, and permanence — are intrinsic characteristics (inseparable). Additionally, one or two characteristics may be extrinsic (separable), which are present in conjunction with external factors. The inseparable characteristics are known as Nishchaya Lakshana (intrinsic characteristics).

Characteristics of a True Believer (Samyagdrishti):

The one who knows and accepts the aforementioned multiple aspects of the soul (Jiva substance) from the perspective of certainty (Nishchaya Naya) is considered a true believer (Samyagdrishti). No one else is.

As it is said: “Jo Tacchamaneyantam Niyama Saddahadi Sattabhangahi. Loyaana Panavavasado Vavahara Pavattanattham Cha.”
___ Kartikeya Anupeksa

Meaning: The soul that truly knows and believes in the manifold nature of reality (which encompasses multiple qualities and differences) as described in the concept of Syadvada (the doctrine of conditioned predication) is considered a true believer. This is the rule. The soul that does not understand the manifold nature of reality is a false believer. The one who understands the multiple aspects of reality can, while residing in a state of conjunction, conduct worldly affairs efficiently and without obstacles. This is a great benefit.

The Names of the Seven Predications (Saptabhangi):

1. Syadasti (it exists in some ways)
2. Syannasti (it does not exist in some ways)
3. Syadastinasti (it exists and does not exist in some ways)
4. Syadavaktavya (it is indescribable in some ways)
5. Syadasti Avaktavya (it exists and is indescribable in some ways)
6. Syannasti Avaktavya (it does not exist and is indescribable in some ways)
7. Syadastinasti Avaktavya (it exists, does not exist, and is indescribable in some ways)

These seven predicates are found in objects, and they are explained when questioned. Additionally, the consideration extends up to 47 aspects. The greatness of knowledge is boundless, and this should be understood.

The Nature of the Seven Predications (Saptabhangi):

“Ekasmirnavirodhena: Pramana Naya Vakyataha. Sadaadi Kalpana Saa Cha Saptabhangi Iti Saa Mata.”

Meaning: From the perspective of Pramana (authoritative knowledge) or Naya (partial viewpoint), by taking support of Syadvada (the doctrine of conditioned predication), the imagination (or speculation) of Sat (existence), Asat (non-existence), etc., in a non-contradictory manner in a single substance is known as Saptabhangi. There are two types:

1. Pramana Saptabhangi (from the perspective of authoritative knowledge)
2. Naya Saptabhangi (from the perspective of partial viewpoint)

Apart from Kevaljnana (omniscience), it is essential to understand the seven types of knowledge and the seven types of viewpoints (Nayas).

Note: In this verse, Acharya Maharaj specifically explains what is to be revered and worshipped as the true essence of the soul (ātma). Only this essence can lead to liberation. This essence is a conscious substance, while the other five substances are non-conscious (inanimate). Until a soul (bhavyātma) realizes and believes in the distinction between the conscious and the non-conscious, it remains ignorant. However, once the soul understands the difference between the conscious and the inanimate, and furthermore, does not consider the inanimate as worthy of reverence, but instead sees its pure nature alone as worthy of reverence and worship, then that soul is considered truly enlightened (samya g-drishti) and is deemed eligible for liberation.

Consequently, those who worship the inanimate (material things) such as body, wealth, people, idols, scriptures, etc., and consider these material substances and their forms as worthy of reverence, cannot transcend the cycle of worldly existence and cannot be regarded as truly enlightened. It is essential to ponder how one can achieve liberation by worshiping the inanimate (a non-conscious substance), devoid of self-awareness. This is the fundamental principle conveyed in this verse.

Summary: To worship and revere the conscious self and sever ties with everything else is the only effective means. The conscious soul, as previously described, is of a specific nature; it is not of any other kind. If it is considered to be of a different nature, it leads to false beliefs. The soul’s (conscious self) support is itself, nothing else. Worship of idols, scriptures, etc., is done out of respect in a figurative sense, as a mere formality, not as a truth. This distinction must be understood clearly.

Attributes of “Anujīvi” and “Pratijīvi”

The soul (ātma) contains two types of attributes:

1. Anujīvi Attributes: These are self-dependent attributes, meaning they arise from and exist within the self without relying on anything else. In the soul substance, attributes such as consciousness (chetanā), knowledge, perception, happiness, strength, and specific qualities like bliss and vigor define life and are self-evident. They are not dependent on external factors.
2. Pratijīvi Attributes: These are dependent on others or opposing qualities, meaning they arise due to the existence of something else or as a counter-quality. These attributes do not relate to the essence of life. For example:
   • Avyābādhattva: This is manifest due to being free from external obstruction; it is not self-dependent.
   • Avagāhattva: This is manifest due to not accommodating the external, or not merging into another.
   • Agurulaghutva: This is manifest by not allowing entry of another; it does not depend on self-substance.
   • Nāstitva: This is manifest due to not existing in another.

Understanding the difference between these attributes is crucial. Pratijīvi attributes are those that are not self-dependent, and thus they are not considered essential to the life of the soul (ātma). This distinction should be clear, and it is essential to recognize that the life of the soul (ātma) is not dependent on these attributes.

पुरुषार्थ सिद्धयुपाय स्वाध्याय

उत्थानिका – उपर्युक्त आर्या छन्दों में पुरुषार्थसिद्धयुपाय कहने की प्रतिज्ञा की है। अब यहाँ शंका होती है कि ‘पुरुष’ शब्द का क्या अभिप्राय है यह हम नहीं जानते ? इस शंका का निराकरण करते हुए अगला सूत्र कहते हैं –

अस्ति पुरुषश्चिदात्मा विवर्जित: स्पर्शगन्धरसवर्णै: ।

गुणपर्ययसमवेत: समाहित: समुदयव्ययध्रौव्यै: ॥9॥

अन्वय – पुरुषः चिदात्मा अस्ति स्पर्शगन्धरसवर्णैः विवर्जितः गुणपर्ययसमवेतः समुदयव्ययध्रौव्यैः समाहितः।। अन्वयार्थ – (पुरुषः) आत्मा (चिदात्मा अस्ति) चैतन्य स्वरूप है (स्पर्शगन्धरसवर्णैः) स्पर्श, रस, गन्ध, वर्ण से (विवर्जितः) रहित है। (गुणपर्ययसमवेतः) गुण और पर्यायों से सहित है और (समुदयव्ययध्रौव्यैः) उत्पाद, व्यय और ध्रौव्य से (समाहितः) व्यवस्थित है।

टीकार्थ – पुरुष चिदात्मा है अर्थात् पुरुष चैतन्य का अनुभव करने वाला है या चैतन्य स्वरूप वाला है। चित् का अर्थ संस्कृत के अनुसार तीनों वाच्यों में किया जाता है, जो अनुभवन करता है या जिसके द्वारा अनुभवन किया जाता है या अनुभवन करना मात्र चित् कहलाता है। ‘चिति संज्ञाने’ धातु से चैतन्य शब्द बनता है। वही ‘स्व’ ‘पर’ को जानने वाली शक्ति है। चित् ही जिसकी आत्मा है वह चिदात्मा है। अतः अस्ति ‘पुरुषश्चिदात्मा’ इस पद के द्वारा जीव का लक्षण कहा गया है। गुण और लक्षण में भेद होता है। द्रव्य के गुण बहुत होते हैं पर लक्षण एक ही होता है। जैसे जीव द्रव्य के ज्ञान, दर्शन, वीर्य, अस्तित्व आदि अनन्तगुण हैं पर लक्षण एक चैतन्य ही है। इससे यह सिद्ध हुआ कि लक्षण विलक्षण होता है।

लक्षण – मिली हुई अनेक वस्तुओं में से लक्षित वस्तु के अलग करने वाले हेतु को लक्षण कहते हैं। इस प्रकार न्यायदीपिका में कहा है।

फरस गंध रस वर्ण से, रहित चिदातम देव । गुण पर्यायों सहित वो, ध्रुव व्यय उदय सदैव ॥९॥

शंका – जीव का लक्षण ज्ञान-दर्शन होना चाहिए क्योंकि इन दोनों गुणों का जीव के साथ तादात्म्य सम्बन्ध है?

समाधान – ऐसा नहीं है, क्योंकि छद्मस्थ अवस्था में तादात्म्य होने पर भी ज्ञान-दर्शन क्रमवर्ती होते हैं। अर्थात् – छद्मस्थ अवस्था में पहले दर्शन होता है और दर्शन पूर्वक ज्ञान होता है किन्तु सर्वज्ञ के दर्शन ज्ञान दोनों साथ-साथ होते हैं। इसलिए दर्शनोपयोग के काल में ज्ञान का अभाव हाने से लक्षण व्यभिचारी होता है। इसलिए चैतन्य लक्षण वाला जीव है। यह लक्षण अव्याप्ति, अतिव्याप्ति, असंभव दोष से रहित है। यदि आप कहें कि “उपयोग लक्षण वाला जीव है” तो ऐसी बात नहीं है क्योंकि उपयोग का लक्षण इस प्रकार कहा गया है” चैतन्य का अनुसरण करनेवाले परिणाम को उपयोग कहते हैं।” ऐसा आगम से प्रसिद्ध होने से दोनों में विशेषता का अभाव है। यहाँ पर पुरुष शब्द से मनुष्य अर्थ ग्रहण नहीं करना चाहिए क्योंकि यहाँ तो पुरुष शब्द आत्म द्रव्य का वाचक है। इसलिए चतुर्गति में होने वाले जीव और सिद्ध परमात्मा को पुरुष शब्द से ग्रहण करना चाहिए। उस पुरुष में और क्या विशेषता है तो कहते हैं कि वह स्पर्श गन्ध रस वर्ण से रहित है अर्थात् आठ प्रकार के स्पर्श, दो प्रकार के गन्ध, पाँच प्रकार के रस और पाँच प्रकार के वर्ण से रहित है। स्पर्श गन्ध रस वर्ण का इतरेतर द्वन्द्व समास किया गया है। जीव पदार्थ में स्पर्श गन्ध रस वर्ण नहीं होते हैं। यह कथन का तात्पर्य है।

यद्यपि व्यवहार नय की अपेक्षा शरीर के सम्बन्ध से जीव स्पर्श रस गन्धवर्ण से युक्त है तो भी जीव को चक्षु के द्वारा या सूक्ष्मदर्शी यन्त्र के द्वारा देखना या मृत्यु के बाद जीव की गति को जानना त्रिकाल में भी संभव नहीं है, क्योंकि तत्त्वार्थसूत्र में कहा है – अन्तिम शरीर (कार्मण शरीर) उपभोग से रहित है। जीव द्रव्य की और क्या विशेषता है – गुणपर्यय समवेत — द्रव्य के गुण शाश्वत होते हैं। पर्यायें क्षणक्षयी (क्षणध्वंसी) और चिरकाल तक स्थायी भी रहती हैं। द्रव्य के विधायक गुण हैं और द्रव्य का विकार पर्यायें हैं। पर्याय, पर्यय, परिणाम से सब एकार्थवाची हैं। जो गुण और पर्यायों से सहित है उसे जीव द्रव्य जानना चाहिए। जैसा कि तत्त्वार्थसूत्र में कहा है। ‘गुणपर्ययवद् द्रव्यम्’ अर्थात् गुण और पर्याय से युक्त द्रव्य होता है। इससे जीव की द्रव्यता का वर्णन किया गया है। तादात्म्य लक्षण वाली होने से द्रव्य से गुण पर्यायों का अपृथक्पना सिद्ध है ऐसा जानना चाहिए। अपृथक् (अभिन्न) होने पर भी शब्द (संज्ञा), संख्या, लक्षण की अपेक्षा से कथञ्चित् भिन्न है, कथञ्चित् अभिन्न है क्योंकि उन द्रव्य और गुण दोनों में अभेदपना है।

यदि जीव द्रव्य है तो सत्त्व कैसा होगा? इस प्रकार की शंका का निराकरण करते हुए कहते हैं ‘समुदयव्ययत्रौव्यैः समाहितः’ नवीन पर्याय की प्राप्ति उत्पाद कहलाती है। पूर्व पर्याय का त्याग व्यय कहलाता है। दोनों पर्यायों में सत् का होना ध्रौव्य कहलाता है। इनसे जो सहित है वह उत्पाद व्यय ध्रौव्य से युक्त है। जैसा कि तत्त्वार्थसूत्र में कहा है ‘उत्पाद व्यय ध्रौव्य युक्तं सत्।’ ये उत्पादादि कथञ्चिद् भिन्न हैं, क्योंकि ये भिन्न लक्षण वाले होते हैं। जैसे दही और घी, गोरस की अपेक्षा अभिन्न है किन्तु दूध का व्यय दही का उत्पाद, घृत पर्याय का उत्पाद, दही पर्याय का विनाश (व्यय) इन सभी स्थितियों में दूध रूप द्रव्य का सभी के साथ अनुवर्तन सदैव रहता है, इस अपेक्षा से कचिद् अभिन्न है। इस प्रकार एक दूसरे की अपेक्षा से उत्पादादि का स्वरूप जानना चाहिए। जैसा कि कहा है –

जिसके दुग्ध लेने का व्रत है अर्थात् आज मैं दूध ही लूँगा ऐसी प्रतिज्ञा है वह दही नहीं खाता, जिसके दही लेने का व्रत है, वह दुग्ध नहीं पीता और जिसका गोरस न लेने का व्रत है वह दूध, दही दोनों ही नहीं खाता। इससे मालूम होता है कि वस्तु तत्त्व त्रयात्मक है अर्थात् उत्पाद व्यय धौव्य रूप है।

उत्पाद आदि वस्तु के स्वाभाविक धर्म हैं। पर्यायार्थिक नय की अपेक्षा वस्तु जिस क्षण में उत्पन्न होती है उसी क्षण में वह विनाश को भी प्राप्त होती है। द्रव्यार्थिक नय की अपेक्षा उसी क्षण वस्तु सत्त्व (अस्तित्व या मौजूदगी) रूप में भी रहती है। इससे यह सिद्ध हुआ कि वस्तु प्रत्येक क्षण नवीन ही है। इस कारण से सिद्धों के प्रत्येक क्षण अपूर्व ही सुख होता है। चूँकि स्याद्वाद मुद्रा (मुहर) से अंकित जिनेन्द्र भगवान का शासन नवीनतम ही है इसलिए अनादि काल से निरन्तर पवन की तरह प्रवाहमान होकर भी यह जैन शासन अत्यन्त निर्मलता का अपूर्व प्रवाह है। उत्पाद व्यय प्रौव्यात्मक शक्ति सभी द्रव्यों में स्वभाव से ही रहती है। इस लोक में ऐसे ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, महेश आदि कोई पुरुष नहीं है कि जो लोक की रचना, रक्षा और विनाश करते हों। लोक में सभी द्रव्यों में उत्पाद, व्यय आदि स्वभाव से ही होते हैं। यहाँ ऐसा मानना चाहिए कि उत्पाद शक्ति ही निश्चय से ब्रह्मशक्ति है, व्यय शक्ति ही निश्चय से महेश की परिच्छेदक है और ध्रौव्यशक्ति का भाव ही विष्णु है। इस प्रकार शुद्ध निश्चय नय की अपेक्षा से जीव का स्वरूप कहा गया है ॥९॥

‘भावप्रकाशनी’ हिंदी टीका पं० मुन्नालाल रांधेलीय वर्णी

भावार्थ – लक्षण या स्वरूप दो तरहका होता है (१) निश्चयरूप अर्थात् असली ( भूतार्थ) और (२} ब्यवहाररूप ( नकली कामचलाऊ अभूतार्थ )। तदनुसार इस श्लोक द्वारा जीवद्रव्यका असाधारण ( आत्मभूत ) असली स्वरूप बताया गया है जो अन्य द्रव्योंमें नहीं पाया जाता, यह विकाल जीवके साथ रहता है, कभी जीवसे भिन्न नहीं रहता । जैसे कि चेतना गुण जीवद्रव्यका मुख्य गुण है उसके साथ जीवका अकालिक सम्बन्ध है और उसके साथ व्याप्यव्यापक सम्बन्ध भी है अतएव उसके साथ जीयका एकत्व है। यद्यपि चेतनाके तीन भेद किये गये हैं-(१) ज्ञानचेतना .(२). कर्मचेतना और (३) कर्मफल चेतना । परन्तु कार्य, वेतनाका एक जानना ही है । विषयभेदसे उक्त तीन भेद किये गये हैं या जो अपनेको खुद जाने ( स्वसंवेदन या आत्मसंवेदन करे अनुभवे ) वह ज्ञानचेतना है ( आत्मचेतना है ) और जो कर्म अर्थात् क्रिया को जाने ( प्रवृत्ति निवृत्ति करावे ) वह कर्मचेतना है तथा जो कर्मके फल सुख-दुःखको जाने-ज्ञान करावे, वह कर्मफल नेतना है । इन तीनोंमेंसे ‘ज्ञानचेतना’ सिर्फ सम्यग्दष्टि के होती है ऐसा कहा गया है। क्योंकि स्त्र और परका भेद विज्ञान सिवाय सम्यग्दृष्टिके और किसीको नहीं होता अर्थात् सत्यार्थ नहीं होता जो हितकारी है। परसे भिन्नताका ज्ञान होना सम्यग्दष्टिका ही कार्य है मिथ्याष्टिका नहीं है । मिथ्यादृष्टिके विपरीत ज्ञान होने से वह अपने आत्माको परसे भिन्न नहीं जानता मानता, अपितु पर रूप ही जानता मानता है, जैसी संयोगीपर्याय है तद्रूप हो जानता है इत्यादि । फलतः वस्तुका या आत्माका स्वरूप, परसे अर्थात् रूप रसादिक पुद्गलके गुणोंसे पृथक् है अर्थात् तादात्म्यरूप { अभिन्न या एकात्वरूप ) नहीं है । और अपने गुणपर्यायोंके साथ हमेशा रहता है ( एकत्वरूप है) तथा उत्पाद व्यय प्रौव्य इन तीन साधारण गुणोंबाग है, जो सभीमें (द्रव्य मात्रमें ) रहते हैं, कारण कि वे द्रव्यका स्वभाव हैं। ‘सद्द्रव्यलक्षणम् –   उत्पादव्ययध्रौव्ययुक्तं सत् ऐसा द्रव्यका लक्षण कहा गया है । (तस्वार्थसूत्र अध्याय ५वाँ सू० २९, ३०)

प्रत्येकका लक्षण निम्न प्रकार है—

( १ ) नवीन पर्यायकी उत्पत्ति होना, उत्पाद कहलाता है जो समय २ होता है वस्तुका स्वभाव है |

(२) व्यय-प्रति समय जो पूर्व पर्याय का विनाश (अभाव) होता है वह व्यय है।

(३) ध्रौव्य – जो हमेशा स्थिर ( कायम ) रहता है वह ध्रौव्य है ऐसी चीज द्रव्य है। अर्थात् मूलभूत वस्तु है । परन्तु वह भी परिणामी ध्रुव ( नित्य ) है कूटस्थ नित्य (ध्रुव) नहीं है जैसा कि अन्य मतवाले मानते हैं।

(४) गुण-जो द्रव्यके आश्रय ( आधार ) रहते हैं और जिनमें गुण नहीं रहते (द्रव्याश्रयाः निर्गुणा: गुणाः, तत्त्वार्थसूत्र ५-४१)।

(५) पर्याय – जो बदल करके भी तद्रप ( द्रव्यरूप ) रहे, अन्यरूप न हो इत्यादि ( ‘तद्भावः परिणामः, त० सूत्र ५-४२) अर्थात जैसी द्रव्य हो वैसी हो पर्याय होतो है (परिणाम होता है)

पर्यायके भेद—-

( १ ) अर्थपर्याय—जो प्रति समय बदलती रहती है, प्रत्येक गुणको अवस्था परिवर्तित होती है । ( एक समयकी है ) ।

(२) व्यंजनपर्याय–जो समुदाय रूप स्थूल (व्यक्त होती है अनेक समयकी पर्यायोंके मेल रूप है । बह विभावरूप व स्वभावरूप दो सरहकी होती है, उनमेसे भेद है।

नोट—यह विभाव व्यंजनपर्याय, जीव और पुद्गल दो हो द्रव्योंमें होती है शेष चार द्रव्योंमें नहीं होती। (आलापपद्धतिमें देखो) निश्चयसे जीव द्रव्य के उक्त चार लक्षण ( स्वरूप) चेतनत्व, स्पर्शादिभिन्नत्त्व, गुणपर्ययवस्व, उत्पादव्ययध्रौव्यत्त्व हैं जो आत्मभूत लक्षण हैं (अभिन्न प्रदेशी हैं ) और कोई २ लक्षण अनात्मभूत (भिन्न प्रदेशी ) भी होता है। उसका नाम व्यवहारी लक्षण है जो संयोगावस्था में होता है  अभिन्न प्रदेशी लक्षण का नाम निश्चयलक्षण है ऐसा जानना।

सम्यग्दृष्टिका लक्षण

जो आत्मा ( जीवद्रव्य ) के उक्त प्रकार अनेकान्त स्वरूपको निश्चयनय से जानता व मानता है वही सम्यग्दृष्टि होता है दुसरा नहीं ।

तदुक्तं

जो तच्चमणेयन्तं णियमा सद्दहदि सत्तभंगेहि । लोयाण पण्हवसदो ववहारपवत्तणट्ठं च ॥३१॥

___ कार्तिकेयानुपेक्षा

अर्थ-जो जीव सातभंगरूप ( भेदरूप अनेक धर्मरूप) अनेकान्तमय वस्तुको यथार्थ जानता है व श्रद्धान करता है वही सम्यग्दृष्टि होता है यह नियम है तथा जो जीव अनेकान्तमय तत्वको नहीं समझता बह मिथ्यादृष्टि होता है। और ऐसा अनेकान्तका ज्ञाता जीव हो संयोगी पर्यायमें रहता हआ अच्छी तरह लोकव्यहार चला सकता है कोई विघ्न-बाधा नहीं आती यह महान् लाभ होता है अस्तु ।

सातभंगोंके नाम

1. स्यादस्ति
2. स्यान्नास्ति
3. स्यादस्तिनास्ति
4. स्यादवक्तव्य
5. स्यादस्ति अवक्तव्य
6. स्यान्नास्ति अवक्तव्य
7. स्यादस्तिनास्ति अवक्तव्य

ये सात धर्म वस्तुमें पाये जाते हैं, जो प्रश्न होने पर बताये जाते हैं। और भी ४७ शक्तियों तक विचार किया जाता है । ज्ञानकी महिमा अपरंपार है ऐसा समझना ।

सप्तभंगीका स्वरूप

एकस्मिन्नविरोधेन: प्रमाणनयवाक्यतः ।

सदादिकल्पना सा च सप्तभंगीति सा मता ।अर्थ– प्रमाणको अपेक्षा ( आलम्बन । से या नयकी अपेक्षासे एक ही पदार्थमै विरोधरहित अर्थात् स्याद्वादका सहारा लेकर जो सत्, असत् आदि सात प्रकारकी कल्पना ( विकल्प ) की जाती है, उसको सप्तभंगी कहते हैं। उसके दो भेद हैं-(१) प्रमाणसप्तभंगी ( २ ) नयसप्तभंगी इति । केवलज्ञानको छोड़कर ७ ज्ञानके भेद और ७ नयों के भेद इत्यादि जानना ।

विशेषार्थ

नोट- इस श्लोक द्वारा आचार्य महाराजने पुरुष ( आत्मा ) का श्रद्धेय व उपास्य तत्व क्या है ? यह खासकर बतलाया है, उसीसे उद्धार हो सकता है। वह तत्त्व एक चेतन द्रव्य है शेष पाँच जड़ ( अचेतन ) द्रव्य हैं। जब तक भव्यात्मा चेतन व अचेतनका पृथक् २ ज्ञान श्रद्धान नहीं करता तब तक अज्ञानी रहता है और जब चेतन व जड़का भेद जान लेता है और उसमें भी जड़को उपादेय न मानकर एक अपने शुद्ध स्वरूप आत्माको ही उपादेय-श्रद्धेय व उपास्य मानता है तभी निश्चमसे सम्यग्दृष्टि होता है और मोक्षका अधिकारी माना जाता है ! फलतः जड़ की या मृर्तकी उपासना करनेवाला ( तन-धन-जन-प्रतिमा या शास्त्र आदि पुद्गल द्रव्य व उसके पर्यायोंका उपादेय रूपसे आदर करनेवाला) कभी संसारसे पार नहीं हो सकता न वह सम्यग्दृष्टि कहा जा सकता है अरे ! जड़ ( अचेतन संयोगोपर्याय ) का उपासक या पूजक ( आत्मज्ञान रहित) कैसे पार पायेगा यह विचारणीय है। बस, यही खास तत्त्व इस श्लोकमें बतलाया गया है।

सारांश-चेतनको चेतनकी उपासना व श्रद्धा करना और सबसे सम्बन्ध विच्छेद करना, यही कार्यकारी है। वह चेतन पुरुष पूर्वोक्त प्रकारका है अन्य प्रकारका नहीं है। यदि भिन्न प्रकार माना जायगा तो मिथ्यात्व होगा इत्यादि । आत्मा ( चेतन) का आलम्बन, आत्मा ही है नान्य: इति मूर्ति ( प्रतिमा शास्त्र आदि) का आदर स्मारकरूप निमित्त होनेसे उपचार मानकर किया जाता है सत्य नहीं यह भेद है इसको ठोक २ समझना चाहिए।

अनुजीवी व प्रतिजीवी गुण

जीव ( आत्मा) द्रव्यमें (१) अनुजीवी और (२) प्रतिजीवी दो तरहके गुण रहते हैं । अर्थात् जीवमें विद्यमान रहते हैं या पाये जाते हैं।

(१) अनुजीवीगुणका अर्थ है स्वाश्रित गुण अर्थात् जो अपनी ही अपेक्षासे घटित हो सदा रहे अन्धको अपेक्षा न रखें । जैसे कि जीवद्रव्यमें चेतना-ज्ञान, दर्शन, सुख, बल विशेष गुण अथवा सुख, वीर्य, जीवत्व वगैरह, जिनसे जीवन सिद्ध होता है व स्वतः सिद्ध हैं-पराश्रित या आपेक्षिक नहीं हैं इत्यादि ।

(२) प्रतिजीवीगुणका अर्थ है पराश्रितगुण अर्थात् जो परको अपेक्षासे घटित होते हैं या प्रतिपक्षी गुण, जिनमें जीवनका सम्बन्ध नहीं है अर्थात् जो अनुजीवी नहीं हैं भिन्न हैं। जैसे कि अव्याबाधत्व, यह परकृत बाधासे रहित होने के कारण प्रकट होता है, अनुजीवी नहीं है प्रतिपक्षी हैं। अवगाहत्व, यह परको स्थान नहीं देने से प्रकट होता है या परमें प्रवेश न करनेसे प्रकट होता है। अगुरुलधुत्व, यह परका प्रवेश न होने देनेसे प्रकट होता है। नास्तित्त्व, परमें न रहनेसे यह प्रकट होता है ( परचतुष्टयको अपेक्षा रखता है ) इत्यादि दोनोंका अर्थ समझना। इससे भिन्न सद्भाव रूप या अभाव रूप अर्थ नहीं समझना जैसा कि अन्यत्र लिखा है अस्तु । यथा अभावरूप गुणोंको प्रतिजीवी गुण काहते हैं, ऐसा जो लक्षण लिखा है वहाँ पर अभावरूपका अर्थ, अनुजीवो गुणों के अभावरूप या प्रतिपक्षी रूप अर्थ समझना चाहिए अर्थात जो अनुजीवी रूप नहीं हैं। इसीसे उनका नाम प्रतिजीवी रखा गया है कारण की जीव द्रव्य (आत्मा) का जीवन उनके आश्रित नहीं है ऐसा स्पष्ट समझना चाहिए ।। ९ ।।

पुरुषार्थ सिद्धयुपाय स्वाध्याय

English Translation of Purushartha Siddhi Upay (Shri Amritchandracharya) Mangala Sanskrit Tika – : Muni shri Pranamya Sagar Maharaj (Under Acharya shri Vidyasagar Maharaj). and ‘Bhavaprakashani’ Hindi tika by Pandit Munnalal Randheliya Varni.

व्यवहारनिश्चयौ य: प्रबुध्य तत्त्वेन भवति मध्यस्थ: ।

प्राप्नोति देशनाया: स एव फलमविकलं शिष्य: ॥8॥

Interpretation: The person who, after truly understanding both Vyavahara Naya and Nischaya Naya according to the nature of reality, remains neutral and does not adhere to only one perspective but accepts both according to context, is the disciple who attains the complete and undistorted result of the teaching.

Verse Translation: The one who understands both perspectives and remains neutral, that disciple attains here the fruit of knowledge, firmly rooted in the self.

Commentary: The person who truly understands both Vyavahara (practical perspective) and Nischaya (absolute perspective) and remains neutral, without bias towards one side, is the disciple who receives the complete benefit of the teaching. This text describes the conduct (character) of monks and householders. From the perspective of knowledge, both monks and householders have similar understanding of both perspectives. However, in terms of conduct, there are some differences. Monks should not engage in worldly practices as will be explained later in this text: “Monks have a transcendental attitude.” Activities like renunciation, repentance, worship, and adoration are considered transcendental practices. Even while engaging in Vyavahara, one should avoid actions that create disturbance in the mind, as disturbance leads to the bondage of severe karmas, which is contrary to the peaceful character. The correct conduct is to engage in such Vyavahara that promotes a steady increase in non-deluded and detached states of the soul. Proper conduct is most conducive to the path of liberation. Until one is capable of remaining steady in the state of passionless, non-deluded meditation, one should rely on Vyavahara Naya, which involves passionate conduct. In this way, by immersing in the pure subject of Nischaya Naya, the monk remains neutral. Householders engage in both worldly and transcendental practices. Even in worldly activities, one should engage in those that do not harm right faith, right knowledge, or right conduct.

As mentioned in the scriptures, “Jains should only engage in worldly activities that are in accordance with the scriptures, so that they do not harm right faith or violate vows, as those are considered authoritative worldly practices.” Householders are knowledgeable about the soul’s nature as described by Nischaya Naya but do not experience it directly. In the activities of worldly and transcendental Vyavahara, various emotions like joy and sorrow may arise from the fruits of merit and demerit. These emotions are transient, and thus, by focusing on the soul’s nature as described by Nischaya Naya with proper faith, one remains neutral, free from attachment and aversion. Understanding the harmony between both perspectives as described above, one who conducts oneself accordingly attains the complete fruit of the teaching—this is the meaning of the statement.

Thus, the commentary on the first chapter, titled Bandha, of the Mangalatika in the text Purushartha Siddhyupaya by Acharya Amritchandra, composed by Acharya Vidyasagar’s disciple Muni Pranamya Sagar, has been completed.

English Translation

‘Bhavaprakashani’ Hindi tika by Pandit Munnalal Randheliya Varni

The main purpose of writing and listening to the Jain scriptures (Jinvani) is to help the ignorant and misguided souls understand the true nature of things, both from the absolute (Nischaya) and practical (Vyavahara) perspectives. The aim is to dispel their ancient delusions and ignorance, to abandon what is unworthy, and to embrace what is worthy, thereby attaining liberation.

However, the natural curiosity arises about what other necessary steps must be taken to achieve this. The answer is that Jinvani inherently has the power to convey both the Nischaya and Vyavahara perspectives, or to express the doctrine of Syadvada (the principle of conditioned predication). It sequentially describes the various attributes inherent in things because it cannot describe all attributes at once. Therefore, all these attributes coexist harmoniously within the same substance, making the substance multi-faceted. The language that describes this multi-faceted reality is known as Syadvada. Thus, there is a mutual relationship between the multi-faceted reality and the language that describes it, which is why Jinvani is considered the language of Syadvada.

This Jinvani, which dispels all one-sided debates and establishes harmony, is the medium through which the teachings of Nischaya and Vyavahara are conveyed. No other language or speech has the ability to explain both Nischaya and Vyavahara. Through this speech, beings attain right knowledge, which leads to a state of neutrality and non-attachment (Vitaraga), known as right conduct (Samyak Charitra), whose ultimate fruit is liberation. This is the complete attainment.

In summary, the fundamental cause of all this is the Jain teachings—the instruction of Nischaya and Vyavahara. Following this, one must understand the principles of Nischaya and Vyavahara, and then develop the state of neutrality. These three are interconnected and essential for the welfare and liberation of the soul. None of them should be neglected.

Therefore, a person with the right view must understand the Syadvada-based Jinvani, become knowledgeable in Nischaya and Vyavahara, and develop a neutral disposition. Only then can one be a true seeker of liberation, attaining supreme happiness and other significant fruits. Otherwise, this is not possible. In essence, even if someone has access to the Jain teachings, if their heart does not change (if their false beliefs are not abandoned), they will never cross the ocean of samsara. They neither understand the Jinvani, nor do they grasp Syadvada, nor do they comprehend Nischaya and Vyavahara, nor do they achieve a state of neutrality.

Decision on the Relationship between Nischaya Naya and Vyavahara Naya:

In the Samayasara by Acharya Kundakunda, it is stated:

“In reality, Vyavahara Naya (the practical perspective) is to be avoided or dismissed because it does not lead to liberation. However, Nischaya Naya (the absolute perspective) is to be embraced, as it is through its adoption that monks attain liberation, and thus gain significant benefits.”

Different Types of Vyavahara Naya:

1. Lokavyavahara (Worldly Conduct): This refers to various kinds of worldly actions.
2. Shastra Vyavahara (Scriptural Conduct): This has three distinctions: dependent, etc. These are the ones that obstruct the path to liberation. Lokavyavahara (worldly conduct) does not obstruct the path. This is the essence.

Errors in Understanding Nischaya and Vyavahara Naya, and in Understanding Cause and Effect:

Some beings, considering themselves pure through Nischaya Naya, act freely without understanding their true purity. Others believe that practical actions like charity, morality, and penance alone bring spiritual welfare, without realizing their own ignorance. There are also those who wrongly believe that the paths of Nischaya Naya and Vyavahara Naya are entirely separate, considering them as two different paths to liberation. Such individuals are arrogant and argumentative, not understanding that the path to liberation is singular and that Vyavahara Naya serves as a means to Nischaya Naya.

Meaning:

1. Many beings in the world do not have knowledge of the different perspectives (Nayas) like Nischaya Naya, Vyavahara Naya, Dravyarthika Naya, and Paryayarthika Naya. Instead, they hold a collective false belief, equating the body with the soul, thus being called “Bahiratma” (those who see the soul as external). They think, “If the scriptures say that the soul is pure, why engage in practices like fasting and penance to purify it? It is futile.” Believing this, they indulge in reckless behavior, considering it their duty to act without fear or restraint. The Acharya says that they are extremely foolish because they have not understood the true purity of the soul and are wandering in the world with a wrong understanding.
2. There are also many beings who believe that the soul has been impure since time immemorial and that it needs to be purified through actions like charity, morality, and self-restraint. They think that these actions are necessary for the soul’s welfare or purification. The Acharya says that these beings are also ignorant and have not understood the true nature of the soul.
3. Some beings consider that there are two paths to liberation: one through Nischaya Naya (the absolute path) and the other through Vyavahara Naya (the practical path). They think that these paths are separate. The Acharya says that such beings are ignorant and argumentative because the path to liberation is one, not two. The Vyavahara Naya is described in such a way that those who understand the indivisible substance through knowledge and not through fragmented imagination are following Vyavahara Naya, which can lead to Nischaya Naya. No other kind of Vyavahara can lead to Nischaya. This is the essence.

Therefore, knowing that in the indivisible, any division is Vyavahara (conventional or superficial understanding), one can only be considered knowledgeable and right-minded if they understand this. Otherwise, they should be considered ignorant and wrong-minded. In conclusion, understanding the Nayas and their application is essential for understanding the true nature of reality. Without this, it is impossible to understand the nature of the elements and the knowledge of Nischaya and Vyavahara.

The principle is that while living in the world, the soul is neither entirely pure nor entirely impure. From the perspective of Dravyarthika Naya (substantial viewpoint), the soul is pure, while from the perspective of Paryayarthika Naya (modal viewpoint), the soul is impure. This is the determination.

Explanation of the Concept of Rejection and Acceptance in the Context of Nayas:

The Vyavahara Naya (Practical Perspective) is ultimately to be rejected, but it is considered somewhat useful in the beginning stages when the soul is still in a lower state and has not yet realized the true nature of Nischaya Naya (Absolute Perspective). Vyavahara Naya can be beneficial in avoiding sinful actions and guiding the soul toward purity, even while living in worldly conditions. It helps awaken some level of discernment, allowing the soul to differentiate between good and bad on a basic level. It reduces passions and fosters good intentions, but it remains within the realm of Vyavahara Naya, which is different from the more detrimental forms of Vyavahara Naya that do not even acknowledge the distinction between sin and virtue.

Within this framework, Vyavahara Naya recognizes certain worldly virtues such as charity, morality, penance, compassion, adherence to vows, and pilgrimage as meritorious or religious acts. However, these are not truly religious acts in the absolute sense (Nischaya), as they do not lead to liberation but rather to further bondage. Nevertheless, Vyavahara Naya is considered beneficial to some extent because it reduces the likelihood of sinful actions and fosters virtuous behavior, which can lead to higher realms of existence, like becoming a king of gods, but it does not protect the soul or lead to true liberation. There is no complete eradication of karma, and the cycle of birth and death does not end.

Summary:

Religion is of two types: Vyavahara Dharma (Practical Religion) and Nischaya Dharma (Absolute Religion), or Laukika Dharma (Worldly Religion) and Paralaukika Dharma (Otherworldly Religion). The term “Vyavahara” has many meanings, such as worldly conduct, common practices, or dealings. However, in this context, the discussion is about the right and wrong perspectives on religion.

True religion, or Samyak Dharma, is that which is followed with the right vision (Samyak Darshan). In contrast, any religious activity performed with a wrong vision (Mithya Darshan) is considered Mithya Dharma (False Religion). Even if a person with a wrong vision engages in virtuous activities or conducts like charity, morality, or penance, it is still classified under Mithya Dharma and does not lead to liberation.

In contrast, the virtuous actions of a person with the right vision are considered beneficial and can lead to liberation because the person understands that these activities do not directly cause liberation but help reduce passions and prepare the soul for true liberation.

Conclusion:

When one has not yet attained Nischaya Dharma or the realization of the absolute perspective, Vyavahara Dharma, which helps in distinguishing between different perspectives, is somewhat beneficial. However, once Nischaya Dharma is realized, all Vyavahara Dharma and the distinctions it makes are abandoned, including the impure aspects of Nischaya Naya, as one enters a state of non-distinction or equanimity (Samadhi). Only the true knowledge and observation remain, and the beneficial or significant Nischaya Dharma alone is considered valuable.

An analogy is often given: Two people set out on a pilgrimage. One had poor vision, and the other had clear vision. When they became hungry and thirsty, they reached a village with many hotels. The person with poor vision chose a dirty, small hotel and consumed bad, stale food and polluted water, while the person with clear vision chose a clean, large hotel and ate good food and drank clean water. Later, the one with poor vision became severely ill and eventually died, while the other survived.

This story illustrates that adhering to Vyavahara Naya (the impure perspective) leads to destruction, while following Nischaya Naya (the pure perspective) leads to protection and well-being.

This is the brief explanation of what is to be rejected (Heyata) and what is to be accepted (Upadeyata) in the context of the Nayas.

Conclusion:

There are two types of behavior:

1. The behavior of the misguided (Mithyādṛṣṭi) – This is referred to as false behavior. This behavior is fundamentally erroneous because it lacks the correct knowledge of distinction (bhēdajñāna) and creates a false sense of unity with the external conditions (samyōgi paryāya).
2. The behavior of the right believer (Samyagdṛṣṭi) – This is referred to as correct behavior. Although this behavior is accompanied by the correct knowledge of distinction, it is still tainted by attachment (rāga) and impurity, making it ultimately to be rejected. Therefore, it is accepted out of necessity or reluctance, but not fully embraced.

Thus, only a person with Samyagdṛṣṭi (right belief) can be considered a true follower of the path to liberation (mokṣamārga) through behavioral conduct. In contrast, a person with Mithyādṛṣṭi (misguided belief) can never be considered a true follower of the path to liberation, even through behavioral conduct. This all depends on one’s belief (śraddhā), not merely on one’s actions or conduct.

It is crucial to understand with impartiality and depth that following the path to liberation is possible only through correct belief, not merely through rituals or external conduct.

Note: The three aspects of religion—view (darśana), knowledge (jñāna), and conduct (cāritra)—can be understood in both absolute (niscaya) and relative (vyavahāra) terms. Therefore, any confusion or misunderstanding in these three aspects must be corrected. Only then is self-liberation possible; otherwise, it is not. This must be kept in mind.

उत्थानिका – जब ऐसा है तो बतलाइये कि देशना का समीचीन पात्र कौन है ? इसके लिए अगला श्लोक कहते हैं –

व्यवहारनिश्चयौ य: प्रबुध्य तत्त्वेन भवति मध्यस्थ: ।

प्राप्नोति देशनाया: स एव फलमविकलं शिष्य: ॥8॥

अन्वय – यः व्यवहारनिश्चयौ तत्त्वेन प्रबुध्य मध्यस्थः भवति सः एव शिष्यः देशनायाः अविकलं फलं प्राप्नोति ॥ अन्वयार्थ – (यः) जो जीव (व्यवहारनिश्चयौ) व्यवहार और निश्चय नय को (तत्त्वेन) वस्तु स्वरूप के द्वारा (प्रबुध्य) यथार्थ रूप से जानकर (मध्यस्थः भवति) मध्यस्थ होता है अर्थात् किसी एक नय को न मानकर अपेक्षा से दोनों को स्वीकार करता है, (स एव) वह ही (शिष्यः) शिष्य (देशनायाः) उपदेश के (अविकलं) सम्पूर्ण (फल) फल को (प्राप्नोति) प्राप्त होता है।

दोनों नय को जानके, जो होता मध्यस्थ । वही शिष्य पाता यहाँ, श्रुत का फल आत्मस्थ ॥८॥

टीकार्थ – जो पुरुष वास्तव में व्यवहार और निश्चय नय को जानकर मध्यस्थ होता है तो नय के पक्षपात से रहित वह शिष्य ही देशना के सम्पूर्ण फल को प्राप्त करता है। इस ग्रन्थ में मुनियों और श्रावकों के आचरण (चारित्र) की विधि बताई गई है। ज्ञान की अपेक्षा दोनों नयों की जानकारी श्रावक और श्रमण इन दोनों को समान होती है, किन्तु आचरण की अपेक्षा उनमें कुछ विशेषता है। साधुओं को लौकिक व्यवहार का आचरण नहीं करना चाहिए, जैसा कि इसी ग्रन्थ में आगे कहा जायेगा “मुनियों की अलौकिक वृत्ति होती है” प्रत्याख्यान, प्रतिक्रमण, वन्दना, स्तवन आदि रूप अलौकिक व्यवहार कहलाता है। व्यवहार में प्रवृत्ति करते हुए भी ऐसा कार्य नहीं करना चाहिए जिससे संक्लेश परिणाम उत्पन्न हों। संक्लेश से तीव्र कर्म का बंध होता है क्योंकि वह संक्लेश चारित्र का विरोधी है। जिन परिणामों से आत्मा में निर्विकल्प वीतराग भावों की वृद्धि हो ऐसा व्यवहार करना ही ठीक है। समीचीन व्यवहार ही मोक्षमार्ग में साधकतम होता है। जब तक वीतराग निर्विकल्प समाधि में स्थिरता हाने में असमर्थता हो तब तक सराग चारित्र के अविनाभावी व्यवहार नय का आलम्बन किया जाता है। इस प्रकार शुद्ध निश्चय नय के विषयभूत आत्म स्वभाव में संलीन हो जाने से श्रमण मध्यस्थ होता है। श्रावकों के द्वारा लौकिक और अलौकिक दोनों प्रकार का व्यवहार किया जाता है। लौकिक में भी वही अनुष्ठान करना चाहिए जिससे सम्यग्दर्शन, सम्यग्ज्ञान और सम्यक्चारित्र में दोष न लगें।

जैसा कि आगम में कहा भी है “जैनों को वही लौकिक विधि करना चाहिए जो आगम सम्मत हो, जिससे सम्यक्त्व की हानि न हो और व्रतों में दूषण न लगे क्योंकि वही लौकिक विधि प्रामाणिक मानी गई है।” श्रावक निश्चय नय से कहे गये आत्मस्वरूप के ज्ञाता ही होते हैं उसके अनुभवकर्ता नहीं। लौकिक और अलौकिक व्यवहार की क्रियाओं में अनेक बार पुण्य-पाप से प्राप्त फलों में हर्ष-विषाद आदि भाव उत्पन्न होते हैं। वे सारे भाव क्षणभंगुर हैं ऐसा मान कर निश्चय नय के विषयभूत आत्मस्वभाव को समीचीन श्रद्धा का विषय बनाता हुआ राग, द्वेष के अभिप्राय से रहित होने से मध्यस्थ होता है। उपर्युक्त प्रकार से दोनों नयों की मैत्री को समझकर जो आचरण करता है वह देशना के सम्पूर्ण फल को प्राप्त करता है, यह कथन का तात्पर्य है॥८॥

इस प्रकार श्री अमृतचन्द्राचार्य द्वारा विरचित पुरुषार्थ सिद्धयुपाय ग्रन्थ की मंगलटीका में पूर्व पीठिका बन्ध नामक प्रथम अधिकार आचार्य विद्यासागर के शिष्य मुनि प्रणम्यसागर द्वारा पूर्ण हुआ।

English Translation of Purushartha Siddhi Upay Tika Gatha 8

‘भावप्रकाशनी’ हिंदी टीका पं० मुन्नालाल रांधेलीय वर्णी

भावार्थ-जिनवाणीके लिखनेका और उसको सुननेका मुख्य उद्देश्य है कि उससे भूले भटके अज्ञानी जोव वस्तुका निश्चय और व्यवहार स्वरूप समझें अथवा अपना अनादिकालीन भ्रम व अज्ञान मिटावें तथा जो हेय हो उसे छोड़े व जो उपादेय हो उसको ग्रहण करें और ऐसा करके अभी सिद्धि प्राप्त करें ( साध्यको सिद्ध करें)। परन्तु इसके लिये और क्या क्या करना अनिवार्य है, यह जिज्ञासा स्वभावतः होती है जिसका उत्तर है कि जिनवाणीमें यह सामर्थ्य है कि वह स्वतः निश्चय और ववहारका कथन करती है अथवा स्याद्वादरूप कथन करती है । अर्थात् वस्तुमें रहनेवाले धर्मों को क्रमशः कहती है क्योंकि उसमें यह सामर्थ्य नहीं है कि एक ही बारमें सब धर्मों को कह सके । अतः वे सभी धर्म एक ही आधारमें परस्पर मेलसे रहते हैं । अतएव अनेक धर्मवाली वस्तु अनेकान्तरूप कहलाती है तथा उसकी कहनेवाली वाणी या भाषाका नाम ‘स्याद्वाद’ है। इस तरह अनेकान्तरूप वस्तु तथा उसको कहनेवाली भाषाका परस्पर वाच्यवाचक सम्बन्ध है | अतएव यह जिनकाणी स्याद्वादवाणी मानी जाती है जो सब एकान्तरूप विवादोंको मिटाकर मैत्री स्थापित करती है। ऐसी वाणी के द्वारा ही निश्चय और व्यवहारका उपदेश होता है। दूसरी कोई भाषा या वाणी में यह सामर्थ्य नहीं है कि वह निश्चय और व्यवहारको कहनेवाली वाणी के अवलम्बन या सहायता ( निमित्त से जीवोंको सम्यग्ज्ञान होता है और सम्यग्ज्ञानसे माध्यस्थ्य ( वीतरागतारूपनिर्विकल्प ) भाव उत्पन्न होता है, जिसे सम्यक्चारित्र कहते हैं एवं उसका फल मोक्षकी प्राप्ति है, यही सम्पूर्ण फलको प्राप्ति है । संक्षेप में ऐसा समझना कि इन सबमें मूल कारण जिनदेशना–निश्चय और व्यवहारका उपदेश है। उसके बाद निश्चयथ्यवहारका सूत्रानुसार जानना है, उसके पश्चात् माध्यस्थ्यभावका होना है। इस तरह तीनों परस्पर अनुस्यूततया सम्बद्घ है। देशना के अविकल फल आत्मकल्याण या जीवोंके उद्धारके लिये तीनों अनिवार्य है किसीको भी श्रुटि नहीं होना चाहिये । ऐसी स्थिति में सम्यग्दष्टिको स्याद्वादरूप जिनवाणी, एवं निश्चयव्यवहारका ज्ञाता और माध्यस्थ परिणामी अवश्य होना चाहिये तभी वह मोक्षमार्गी व मोक्षगामी परम सुखी आदि महत्त्वपूर्ण फलवाला हो सकता है अन्यथा नहीं, यह सारांश है। फलतः जिनदेशनाके प्राप्त होने पर भी जिन जीवोंका हृदय परिवर्तन नहीं होता ( मिथ्याश्रद्धान नहीं छूटता ) वे कभी संसारसे पार नहीं होते । उनको न जिनवाणीका ज्ञान होता है न वे स्याद्वादको जानते हैं न उनको निश्चय व्यवहारका ज्ञान होता है न माध्यस्थ्यभाव होता है।

निश्चयव्यवहारनयके सम्बन्ध निर्णय —

एवं ववहारणओ पडिसिद्धो जाण णिच्छयणएण ।

णिच्छयणयासिदा पुण मुणिणो पावंति णिव्वाण ॥272॥

–समयसार कुंदकुंदाचार्य

अर्थ–निश्चयरूपसे । वास्तविकमें ) व्यवहारनय हेय या निषिद्ध है क्योंकि उससे मोक्ष नहीं होता, किन्तु निश्चयनय उपादेय है कारण कि उसके आलम्बन से मुनि मोक्ष को जाते हैं अर्थात् मोक्षको प्राप्त कर लेते हैं इत्यादि लाभ होता है, अस्तु ।

व्यवहारनयके भेदोंमें भेद

(१) लोकव्यवहार, अनेक तरहकी क्रियाओं रूप (२) शास्त्रव्यवहाररूप, जिसके पराश्रित आदि ३ भेद होते हैं। मोक्षमार्गमें वे ही बाधक होते हैं। लोकव्यवहार बाधक नहीं होता यह तात्पर्य है, अस्तु ।। ८ ।।

निश्चयनय और व्यवहारनयमें भूल तथा कारणकार्यमें भूल

कोऊ नयनिश्चयसे आत्माको शुद्ध मान,

भये हैं स्वच्छन्द न पिछाने निजशुद्धता।

कोऊ व्यवहार-दान-शील-तप-भावको ही,

आतमको हित जान छांड़त न मुद्धता ।।

कोऊ व्यवहारनय निश्चयके मारगको

भिन्न-भिन्न पहिचान करे निज उद्धता।

जब जाने निश्चयके भेद व्यवहार सब,

कारण है उपचार माने तब बुद्धता ।।

भावार्थ- (१) संसारमें बहुतसे जीव ऐसे हैं कि जिन्हें नयोंका अर्थात् निश्चयनय, व्यवहारनय, द्रव्याथिकनय, पर्यायाथिकनयका तो ज्ञान नहीं है किन्तु एक सामूहिक मिथ्याज्ञान या अज्ञान पाया जाता है जिससे वे शरोर और जीवको एक ही मानते हैं अतएव वे ‘बहिरात्मा‘ कहलाते हैं। उनका ख्याल ( मान्यता ) ऐसा है कि जब शास्त्रों में लिखा है और उपदेश दिया जाता है कि जीव ( आत्मा ) ‘शुद्ध’ है—अशुद्ध नहीं है, तब उसको शुद्ध करने के लिये क्रियाकांड या उपवासादि तपश्चरण क्यों किया जाय ? व्यर्थ है । ‘पिष्टस्व पेषणं वैयर्थम्’ यह न्याय है अर्थात पिसे हुएको फिर पीसना बेकार है। ऐसा मानकर वे स्वच्छंद होकर वनगजको तरह मनचाहा खानापीना कुकर्म व पाप करना अपना कर्तव्य समझ लेते हैं गरज कि उनको किसी बात का भय व परहेज नहीं रहता। सो आचार्य कहते हैं कि वे अत्यन्त मूर्ख (मूढ़ ) हैं, उन्होंने आत्मा (जीव) की शुद्धताको समझा ही नहीं है और खोटी या गलत धारणाकर संसारमें परिभ्रमणकर रहे हैं। (२) बहुतसे जीव ऐसे भी हैं जो यह मानते हैं कि ‘आत्मा अनादिसे अशुद्ध है, उसको शुद्ध करनेके लिये दान तथा शील, संयमादि क्रिया करना चाहिये, वे जरूरी हैं, उनके करने से आत्माका हित या कल्याण होता है या आत्मा शुद्ध हो जाता है इत्यादि । आचार्य कहते हैं कि वे भी मूढ मिथ्यादष्टि हैं उन्होंने भी आत्माको शुद्धता-अशुद्धताको नहीं पहिवाना है एवं भूले हैं। ( ३ ) बहुतसे जीव ऐसे हैं कि जो शुद्धता होने के या मोक्ष प्राप्त करनेके दो मार्ग ( उपाय ) मानते हैं व कहते हैं यथा ( १ ) निश्चय मोक्षमार्ग ( २ ) व्यवहार मोक्षमार्ग, और दोनों पृथक् २ हैं। आचार्य कहते हैं कि वे जीव उदंड हैं अर्थात् ही और लड़ाकू हैं अर्थात् व्यर्थ ही बकवाद और वितंडा करनेवाले हैं, कारण कि मोक्षका मार्ग एक ही है दो नहीं हैं। और वह व्यवहारमार्ग इस प्रकार कहा गया है कि जो जीव अखंड द्रव्य ( वस्तु ) में ज्ञानके द्वारा खंडकल्पना या निर्धार करते हैं परन्तु प्रदेश भेद नहीं करते, वह भेदाश्रित व्यवहार कहा जाता है और वही निश्चयका कारण है; वह हो सकता है, दूसरे प्रकारका कोई व्यवहार निश्चयका कारण नहीं हो सकता, यह सारांश है अर्थात् भिन्न प्रदेशी व्यवहार निश्चयका कारण नहीं हो सकता इत्यादि । अतएव निश्चय (अखंड में खंड करना, व्यवहार या उपचार है ऐसा जानना चाहिये तभी वह ज्ञानी सम्यग्दष्टि हो सकता है अन्यथा अज्ञानी व मिथ्यादष्टि ही समझना चाहिये, किम्बहुना । फलतः नयोंका ज्ञान होना एवं विवक्षाको समझना वस्तु स्वरूपको समझने के लिये अनिवार्य है- बिना उसके तत्त्वका स्वरूप व निश्चयव्यवहारका ज्ञान होना असंभव है इति । देखो, सिद्धान्त यह है कि संयोगी पर्याय ( संसार दशामें ) रहते समय न सर्वथा शुद्ध आत्मा है न सर्वथा अशुद्ध आत्मा है किन्तु द्रव्यार्थिक से शुद्ध… आत्मा है और पर्यायार्थिक नय से अशुद्ध आत्मा है ऐसा निर्धार है, अस्तु ॥ ८ ॥

कथंचित् नयों में हेयता व उपादेयता बतलाते हैं

व्यवहारनय यों तो अन्तमें हेय ( त्याज्य ) है ही किन्तु प्रारम्भ में जबतक हीन दशा रहती हैं अर्थात् निश्चय नय प्रकट नहीं होता तबतक वह भी अपेक्षाकृत उपादेय माना जाता है क्योंकि वह अशुभसे बचाता है शुद्धके सन्मुख करता है अर्थात् संयोगपर्यायमें रहते हुए भी कुछ विवेक जाग्रत होता है, उसको स्थूल रूपसे अच्छे और बुरेका ज्ञान होता है, कषाय मन्द होती है, शुभरागरूप परिणाम होता है, परन्तु यह व्यवहारनय है, एकान्तरूप अप्रशस्त व्यवहारनयसे यह भिन्न है । इस व्यवहारनय में पुण्य व पापका ख्याल नहीं रहता है अर्थात् दोनों मेंसे पुण्यको अच्छा मानता है, पापको बुरा मानता है, दया करना व्रत पालना शीलसंयम धारण करना, लोकोपयोगी कार्य करना, तीर्थाटन करना आदिको वह पुण्य या धर्म मानता है, जो यथार्थ ( निश्चय ) में धर्म नहीं है-मोक्षका कारण नहीं है, प्रत्युत बंधका कारण है किन्तु व्यवहार या उपचारसे उसको घर्म मान लिया जाता है इत्यादि भूल ही है । लेकिन उससे भी कुछ लाभ या बचत होती है, पापका बंध प्रायः नहीं होता पुण्यका बंध होता है जिससे नवग्रेवेयिकतक चला जाता है-अहमिन्द्र बड़ा विभूतिका धारी हो जाता है, परन्तु रहता मिथ्यादृष्टि हो है वहाँ आत्माकी रक्षा नहीं होतो, आत्माकै स्वभावका घात होता ही रहता है, संवरपूर्वक निर्जरा नहीं होती, संसारका अन्त ( मोक्ष ) नहीं होता इत्यादि कमी बनी ही रहती है इत्यादि हानि व लाभ समझना ।

सारांश-धर्म दो तरहका होता है ( १ ) व्यवहारधर्म .२) निश्चयधर्म । अथवा एक लौकिकधर्म दूसरा पारलौकिकधर्म । व्यवहार शब्दके अनेक अर्थ है जैसे व्यवहारका अर्थ, लोकप्रवृत्ति या लोकयात्रा या चालचलन होता है तथा व्यवहारका अर्थ भेद करना भी होता है या सलूक करना होता है इत्यादि । परन्तु यहाँपर – धर्म का प्रकरण होनेसे सम्यक् धर्म व मिथ्या धर्म का विचार किया जाना है। जो धर्म ( आत्म स्वभाव ) सम्यग्दर्शन पूर्वक हो उसको सम्यक् धर्म समझना चाहिए। और जो धर्म मिथ्यादर्शनके साथ हो उसको मिथ्याधर्म समझना चाहिये । तदनुसार मिथ्यादृष्टि के शुभ रागरूप या शुभ प्रवृत्तिरूप ( सदाचाररूप-क्रियाकाण्डरूप ) धर्मके अत्यधिक होनेपर भी वह मिथ्याधर्म में ही गभित ( शामिल ) है, उससे उसको मोक्ष नहीं होता तथा सम्यग्दृष्टिके वह शुभरागरूप धर्म कथंचित् या उपचार से मोक्षका कारण माना जाता है कारण कि उसकी श्रद्धा उस शुभरामरूप धर्मके बारे ( विषय ) में सही है अर्थात् उसको वह मोक्षका कारण नहीं मानता, संसार ( बंध ) का ही कारण मानता है और मिथ्या दृष्टि वैसा नहीं मानता, यह खास भैद धर्म के विषयमें है । फलतः लोकव्यवहार ( लोकाचार ) को अपेक्षा शुभ किया या शुभ प्रवृत्ति कथंचित् उपादेय है। किन्तु परलोकको अपेक्षा वह उपादेय नहीं है, हेय है अर्थात् वह व्यवहारधर्म ( शुभ प्रवृत्तिरूप ) सर्वथा उपादेय नहीं है। निष्कर्ष यह कि मिथ्यात्वके साथ ( शुभरागरूप व्यवहारधर्म ) तथा सम्यक्त्वके साथ भी उक्त व्यवहारधर्म, उपादेय व कार्यकारी, किसी भी हालतमें नहीं है-उससे मोक्ष नहीं हो सकता। किन्तु मोक्ष सिर्फ निश्चयधर्म अर्थात् सम्यग्दर्शनपूर्वक वीतरागतारूप धर्मसे ही हो सकता है अन्यथा नहीं, यह तात्पर्य है। अर्थात् जबतक निश्चयधर्म प्राप्त नहीं होता या निश्चनयका उदय नहीं होता तबतक व्यवहारधर्म या भेद बतानेवाला मय उपादेय है और जब निश्चयधर्मको या निश्चयनयको प्राप्ति हो जाती है सब व्यवहारधर्म व व्यवहारनयको छोड़ दिया जाता है एवं भेदरूप या विकल्परूप या शुभरागरूप निश्चयनय (अशुद्धनिश्चय ) को भी निर्विकल्प दशा ( समाधि ) के समय छोड़ दिया जाता है, एक ज्ञाता-दृष्टामात्र स्वस्थ रह जाता है, किम्बहुना उपादेय व हितकारी निश्चय ही है | इस विषयमें एक-लौकिक दृष्टान्त दिया जाता है।

एक समय दो आदमी किसी तीर्थयात्राको पैदल चले। उनमेंसे एक आदमीको कुछ कमती (धुंधला ) दिखता था और दूसरेको पूरा साफ साफ दिखता था। चलते २ दोनोंको भूख व प्यासकी इच्छा हुई और बेचैन होने लगे । थोड़ी देरके बाद एक गांव मिला, जहाँपर बहुतसे होटल थे दोनों ठहर गये और खाने-पानेको होटलोंमें गये, जो आदमी कम दृष्टिवाला था वह पासवाले एक गंदले (छोटे) होटल में चला गया और वहाँपर उसने खराब बासी विकारी भोजन किया और मलीन विषैला पानी भी पिया । तथा दूसरे अच्छी दष्टिवाले ने अच्छे बड़े साफ होटलमें जाकर भोजन किया, पानी पिया। इसके बाद दोनों आगे चल पड़े। चलते-चलते बीच में वह कम दृष्टिवाला एकदम बीमार हो गया-तड़फड़ाने लगा, चिल्लाने लगा। दूसरा साफ दृष्टिवाला हक्का बक्का होगा या घबड़ा गया कि इसे क्या हो गया है ? आश्चर्य में पड़ गया। लेकिन हिम्मत करके उसको पीठपर रखा तथा बस्ती में ले जाकर दवा कराई किन्तु वह मर गया । दूसरा घर वापिस लौटा और उसके घरवालोंको खबर दी व सब हाल कह सुनाया, सब लोग समझ गये कि यह सब खराब या अशुद्ध विकारों खाने-पीने का नतीजा है अर्थात् उसकी गलती फल है। बस, इसी प्रकार व्यवहारनय (अशुद्धनय) के आलम्बन लेनेका फल मिलता है ( बरबादी होना ) और निश्चयनयके आलम्बनका फल ( आबादी या रक्षा ) मिलता है ऐसा संक्षेप में समझना चाहिये । यही कथंचित् हेयता व उपादेयताका खुलासा है |

उपसंहार

व्यवहारके दो भेद हैं ( १ ) मिथ्यादृष्टि का व्यवहार, जिसको मिथ्या व्यवहार कहते हैं ( २ ) सम्यग्दृष्टिका व्यवहार जिसको सम्यक् व्यवहार कहते हैं, भिन्न २ तरहका होता है। मिध्यादृष्टिका. व्यवहार मूलमें भूलरूप है अर्थात वह भेद ज्ञान रहित है, संयोगी पर्यायके साथ एकत्वरूप है । और सम्यक् दृष्टिका व्यवहार मूल में भूलरूप नहीं है किन्तु भेदज्ञान सहित है तथापि सरागरूप अशुद्ध है अतएव वह हेय ही हैं इसीसे वह कथंचित् उपादेय भी ( हीनदशामें ) माना जाता है, जो मजबूरी की निशानी है, या बलात्कार के समान है । तभी तो वह सम्यग्दृष्टि उससे भी अरुचि या असहयोग करता है उसका स्वामी नहीं बनता इत्यादि । ऐसे भव्य सम्यग्दृष्टि जीवको ही व्यवहारनयसे मोक्षमार्गी कहा जा सकता है किन्तु मिथ्यादृष्टि जीवको कदापि ( व्यवहारनयसे भी ) मोक्षमार्गी नहीं कहा जा सकता और यह सब श्रद्धापर ( भावपर ) निर्भर है, किया या आचरण पर निर्भर नहीं है किम्बहुना, इस तथ्यको निष्पक्ष होकर ठीक २ समझना चाहिये ||८||

नोट-दर्शन ज्ञान चारित्र ( धर्म ) तीनों निश्चय और व्यवहाररूप होते हैं अतएव तीनों में जो भूल या भ्रम है उसको निकालना चाहिए तभी आत्मकल्याण होगा, अन्यथा नहीं, यह ध्यान रहे इति ।

English Translation of Purushartha Siddhi Upay (Shri Amritchandracharya) Mangala Sanskrit Tika – : Muni shri Pranamya Sagar Maharaj (Under Acharya shri Vidyasagar Maharaj). and ‘Bhavaprakashani’ Hindi tika by Pandit Munnalal Randheliya Varni.

Uthanika (Introduction): Why is the teaching not applicable to a person who only experiences Vyavahara Naya? This is explained with an example.

माणवक एव सिंहो यथा भवत्यनवगीत सिंहस्य ।

व्यवहार एव हि तथा निश्चयतां यात्यनिश्चयज्ञस्य ॥7॥

Interpretation: Just as a child who has never seen a lion may mistake something else for a lion, similarly, a person who is unaware of Nischaya Naya (the absolute perspective) perceives Vyavahara Naya (the practical perspective) as the ultimate truth.

Prose Translation:

Just as a child who has never seen a lion mistakes an ordinary child for a lion, similarly, a person who is ignorant of Nischaya Naya takes Vyavahara Naya to be the absolute reality.

Verse:

“Just as one who has never seen a lion considers a child to be a lion,
Similarly, without knowing Nischaya, one is trapped in the cycle of worldly existence.” (Verse 7)

Commentary:

A person who has never seen the form of a lion, nor understands its bravery and ferocity, may mistake a child for a lion. In the Amar Kosha, the term “Māṇavaka” refers to a child. The example is such that a mother might say, “My son is a lion.” Hearing this, another child who is unfamiliar with a real lion might believe that the boy is indeed a lion. This comparison is straightforward. The word “evam” in the verse signifies certainty. If a person mistakenly identifies a child as a lion based on some general similarities such as facial features or eyes, it might be somewhat understandable, but to fully accept the child as a lion is impossible because there are significant differences between the two.

However, due to unfamiliarity with a real lion, if someone sees a child running or jumping and thinks, “This is how a lion runs or jumps,” that person becomes an object of ridicule. Similarly, someone who lacks knowledge of Nischaya Naya becomes engrossed in the activities of Vyavahara Naya, considering it to be the ultimate reality. They confuse what is said from the perspective of Vyavahara as being from the perspective of Nischaya.

Such a person, mistaking the body for the soul, identifies the soul with bodily conditions such as pleasure, pain, youth, childhood, old age, and so on, seeing them as qualities of the soul. This person, ignorant of Nischaya Naya, worships the physical forms of Tirthankaras, Acharyas, Upadhyayas, and Sadhus, and sees this worship as devotion to the soul. Not understanding the true meaning, they engage in vows, penances, rituals, discourses, confessions, renunciations, reading scriptures, conducting rituals, pilgrimages, gatherings, discussions, worship ceremonies, and other activities of Vyavahara Naya. Such a person’s efforts are not truly purposeful because they are unaware of the true nature of the soul. Therefore, for such a person, the teaching becomes meaningless. (Verse 7)

Special Note:

If one does not reach the true nature of the object but only hears the name of Nischaya Naya and then considers the conduct of Vyavahara as the conduct of Nischaya, the Vyavahara Samyaktva as Nischaya Samyaktva, or the form of Vyavahara as the form of Nischaya, then such a person is ignorant. In such a state of ignorance, the teachings of the Acharyas do not have any impact on them, and therefore, they are not worthy of receiving spiritual instruction.

English Translation

‘Bhavaprakashani’ Hindi tika by Pandit Munnalal Randheliya Varni

Meaning: From time immemorial, beings who consider Vyavahara (practical perspective) as the ultimate truth (Nischaya) are commonly found in the world. These deluded beings are ignorant because they neither have knowledge of Nischaya nor understand its significance. They are always fixated on the Vyavahara perspective (practical view). For them, there is no concept as important as Nischaya. Just as a person who has never seen a real lion may mistake a kitten for a lion, similarly, in such a state, there can be no salvation or well-being. Merely knowing a fake lion does not make someone a true knower of lions. The result is that their mistaken belief becomes so strong that even when they encounter a real lion, they may still consider it false.

Therefore, until one has the vision and knowledge of Nischaya (truth), they may cling to Vyavahara or untruth in some way. However, once they attain the vision and knowledge of the truth, they should abandon the false notions associated with Vyavahara. This is the essence or secret. This same idea has been written by Acharya Nemichandra in the Jivakanda section of Gommattsara.

Accordingly, false or Vyavahara faith should be abandoned immediately. If one does not do so, they cannot be considered wise. Just as a person might consider a fake lion (a kitten) as a real lion until they see a real lion, but upon seeing the real lion, they must abandon their delusion or ignorance (related to Vyavahara), otherwise, they will be deemed foolish and deceived. Such a belief will not lead to any benefit or fulfillment of their desires.

In a time of crisis, a fake lion will not be able to stand up to a real lion, nor will it be able to protect itself or others. In fact, upon seeing a stronger or more powerful being, it will flee. Similarly, one should understand the true nature of things. Just as Vyavahara-based (passionate) right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct cannot destroy the enemies of the soul (passions like attachment and karmas), nor can they protect the soul, only the Nischaya-based passionless right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct can destroy the enemies of karma and protect the soul, leading to liberation.

Therefore, it is understood that Nischaya is truly beneficial and worthy of adoption. By relying on it, one will never be deceived, and the ultimate goal or realization will always be achieved. Indeed, the example of the lion provided by the Acharya is perfectly apt. The example given in the foreign language by Acharya Kundakunda is also relevant, as it clarifies and simplifies the understanding.

उत्थानिका – मात्र व्यवहार नय का अनुभव करने वाले पुरुष के लिए यह देशना क्यों नहीं है, इस बात को दृष्टांत पूर्वक समझाते हैं।

माणवक एव सिंहो यथा भवत्यनवगीत सिंहस्य ।

व्यवहार एव हि तथा निश्चयतां यात्यनिश्चयज्ञस्य ॥7॥

अन्वय :- यथा अनवगीतसिंहस्य माणवक एव सिंहः तथा अनिश्चयज्ञस्य व्यवहारः एव हि निश्चयतां याति ॥ अन्वयार्थ – (यथा) जैसे (अनवगीतसिंहस्य) सिंह को नहीं जानने वाले पुरुष के (माणवकः) बालक (एवं) ही (सिंहः) सिंह रूप (भवति) होता है (तथा) उसी प्रकार (अनिश्चयज्ञस्य) निश्चय नय के स्वरूप से अपरिचित पुरुष के लिए (व्यवहारः) व्यवहार (एव) ही (हि) अवश्य (निश्चयतां) निश्चय नय के स्वरूप को (याति) प्राप्त होता है।

जिसने सिंह देखा नहीं, बालक माने शेर ।

निश्चय को जाने बिना, जग में फिर-फिर फेर ॥७॥

टीकार्थ – जिस पुरुष ने सिंह का आकार और उसके शौर्य क्रूरतादि गुणों को नहीं जाना है क्योंकि पहले कभी सिंह को देखा नहीं है इसलिए वह पुरुष बालक को ही सिंह मानता है। अमरकोश में माणवक बालक को कहा है। दृष्टान्त इस प्रकार है किसी बालक की माता “मेरा बेटा सिंह है” इस प्रकार कहती है। उसे सुनकर कोई वास्तविक सिंह से अपरिचित दूसरा बालक उसी को सिंह मान लेता है। दाष्र्टान्त सुगम है। श्लोक में ‘एव’ पद निश्चय के अर्थ से आया है। अगर कोई पुरुष मुख, नेत्र, क्रूरता आदि सामान्य लक्षणों की समानता से बालक को सिंह मानता है तो भले ही कथञ्चित् स्वीकार किया जा सकता है किन्तु बालक को ही सर्वथा सिंह स्वीकार नहीं किया जा सकता है क्योंकि इन दोनों में बहुत अन्तर देखा जाता है। किन्तु वास्तविक सिंह से अपरिचय के कारण जो मनुष्य बालक को देखकर सिंह आया और उसके दौड़ने पर या कूदने पर समझता है कि यह सिंह दौड रहा है या सिंह ऐसा कूदता है ऐसा मानता है तो वह हँसी का पात्र होता है। उसी प्रकार जिसको निश्चय नय का ज्ञान नहीं वह अनिश्चयज्ञ पुरुष व्यवहार के क्रिया कलापों में मग्न होकर व्यवहार को ही निश्चय मानता है तथा उसे व्यवहार कथन ही निश्चय कथन समझ आता है। वह अनिश्चयज्ञ शरीर को ही आत्मा मानकर शरीर से उत्पन्न होने वाले सुख, दुःख, जवानी, बाल, वृद्ध आदि पर्यायों में संयोग के वश से एकता मानकर उन पर्यायों को आत्मा की ही पर्याय मानता है। वह अनिश्चयज्ञ (निश्चय को नहीं जानने वाला) तीर्थंकर प्रतिमा, आचार्य, उपाध्याय, साधुओं के शरीर की पूजा, स्तुति, भक्ति, वन्दना आदि करके उनको आत्मा की ही पूजादि मानता है और परमार्थ को नहीं जानने से व्रत, तप, दीक्षा देना या ग्रहण करने का उपदेश वाचना, प्रतिक्रमण, प्रत्याख्यान, ग्रन्थ के पठन-पाठन में, पूजाविधान, तीर्थयात्रा, सम्मेलन, वार्ता परिचय्, पूजा प्रतिष्ठा आदि व्यवहार की क्रियाओं में ही रमता (रुचि रखता) है। ऐसे जीव का पुरुषार्थ भी प्रयोजनवान नहीं है क्योंकि वह आत्मा के स्वरूप से अनभिज्ञ है। इसलिए उसको देशना निरर्थक हुई है।॥७॥

विशेषार्थ – वस्तु के निश्चय स्वरूप तक तो पहुँचे नहीं, केवल निश्चय नय का नाम सुनकर व्यवहार चारित्र को निश्चय चारित्र, व्यवहार सम्यक्त्व को निश्चय सम्यक्त्व, व्यवहार आत्म स्वरूप को निश्चय आत्म स्वरूप समझ कर उसी एकान्त पर आरूढ़ हो जाये तो वे पुरुष अज्ञानी हैं। ऐसी अज्ञान दशा में आचार्यों के उपदेश का प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता है इसलिए वह आत्मा उपदेश का पात्र नहीं होता है।

‘भावप्रकाशनी’ हिंदी टीका पं० मुन्नालाल रांधेलीय वर्णी

भावार्थ-अनादिकालसे व्यवहार को ही निश्चय माननेवाले जीव संसारमें बहुधा अधिक पाये जाते हैं, वे भूले-भटकके जीव अज्ञानी जोव है, कारण कि उनकी निश्चयका न ज्ञान है न महत्व है, व्यवहारदष्टि ( मान्यता ) ही उनको सदैव रहती है। उनके सामने निश्चय जैसी महत्वपूर्ण कोई वस्तु है ही नहीं। जिसप्रकार अज्ञानी या बालक के सामने सच्चा शेर न होने से बिल्लीके बच्चेको ही वह शेर समझता है । ऐसी स्थिति में कभी उद्धार या भला नहीं हो सकता। सच्चे शेरके जाने बिना नकली शेरको जान लेने मात्र से उसको शेरका सच्चा  ज्ञाता नहीं कह सकते । नतीजा यह होता है कि उसकी नकली धारणा इतनी मजबूत हो जाती है कि कदाचित् सच्चे शेरका प्रत्यक्ष दर्शन होनेपर भी वह उसको सच्चा और नहीं मानता, झूठा मानता है। अतः जबतक निश्चय ( सत्य ) का दर्शन व ज्ञान न हो तबतक तो वह किसी तरह व्यवहार या असत्यको अपनाये, किन्तु जब सत्यका दर्शन व ज्ञान हो जाय तब वह व्यवहाररूप धारणा ( मान्यता) को छोड़ देवे या छोड़ देना चाहिये । यह आशय या रहस्य है। यही बात जीवकाण्ड गोम्मटसारमें श्रीनेमिचन्द्राचायने लिखी है |७|

तदनुसार मिथ्या या व्यवहार श्रद्धा तुरन्त छोड़ देना चाहिये, हम नहीं करना चाहिये, वही भद्र परिणामी समझा आयगा । जैसे कि जबतक असली शेरका दर्शन या प्रत्यक्ष न हो तबतक भले ही नकली शेर ( बिल्ली )को तसल्ली के लिए सच्चा शेर मानता रहे किन्तु जब सच्चे शेरका दर्शन व प्रत्यक्ष हो जाय तब तो भ्रम या अज्ञान ( व्यवहारपना ) छोड़ ही देना चाहिए, अन्यथा यह मूर्ख ही कहलायगा और धोखा खायमा, उससे लाभ या मनोरथ सिद्धि न होगी यह तथ्य है। कदाचित् परीक्षाके समय नकली शेर, दूसरे असली शेरका मुकाबला नहीं कर सकेगा। न अपनी व दूसरोंकी वह रक्षा भी कर सकेगा, दुसरे जबर्दस्त या बलवानके देखते ही भाग जायेगा इत्यादि । उसी तरह प्रकृतमें भी समझ लेना चाहिये । जैसेकि व्यवहाररूप ( सराग ) सम्यग्दर्शन-सम्यग्ज्ञानसम्यक्त्रारिसे भाव व द्रव्य शत्रु ( रागादिक विभाव भाव व द्रव्य कर्म ) नष्ट नहीं हो सकते न आत्मांकी उनसे रक्षा हो सकती है किन्तु निश्चय वीतरागतारूप सम्यग्दर्शनादिसे ही कर्मशत्रुओंका क्षय (विनाश:) होकर आस्माकी रक्षा होती है व मोक्ष जाता है इत्यादि, अतएवं निश्चय ही उपादेयः व हितकारी है ऐसा समझकर उसका ही आलम्बन या ग्रहण करना चाहिए, उससे कभी धोखा न होगा, हमेशा लय या साध्यकी सिद्धि होगी। किम्बहुना आचार्यका दिया हुआ शेर (सिंह) का दृष्टान्त बिलकुल फिट बैठता है । म्लेच्छ भाषाका दृष्टान्त भी जो श्रीकुन्दकुन्दाचार्य ने दिया है संगत वैठता है उनसे सब श्रम मिट जाता है, खुलासा समझमें आ जाता है इति ।

Uthanika (Introduction): Why was the concept of Abhutartha (unreal essence) presented? This is clarified as follows:

अबुधस्य बोधनार्थं मुनीश्वरा: देशयन्त्यभूतार्थम्‌ । व्यवहारमेव केवलमवैति यस्तस्य देशना नास्ति ॥6॥

Translation:

The great sages (Munis) explain Abhutartha (unreal essence) in order to enlighten the ignorant. For those who only comprehend the Vyavahara Naya (practical viewpoint), there is no proper teaching for them.

Verse:
The sages teach the unreal essence to educate the ignorant, but for those who only understand Vyavahara, there is no teaching available for them. ॥6॥

Commentary:

The divine sages, like Ganadharas (chief disciples of Tirthankaras), provide teachings on Vyavahara Naya to help the ignorant souls understand and develop knowledge. Here, the term “Abudha” refers to the ignorant, but Acharya has used the wordplay to give it two meanings:

1. Ignorant Souls: The term Abudha typically means those who are not knowledgeable, specifically referring to mithyatva (false-belief) souls. Here, in a Tatpurusha Samasa (a compound where the first part modifies the second), the term emphasizes the meaning of ignorant mithyadrishti souls (those with wrong belief).
2. Slightly Knowledgeable Souls: The term Abudha can also be interpreted as “a little knowledgeable,” referring to those with slight knowledge or avirata samyagdrishti (right believers with slight attachment). In this context, it suggests that these are individuals who have some level of understanding but are not yet fully knowledgeable. By using the Nan Samasa (a type of compound negation), it also conveys the meaning of right belief, much like the term nokesha (non-passionate), which in Tattvarthasutra is described as akashaya vedaniya (non-passionate sensations).

Therefore, the phrase Abudha clearly applies to both right-belief souls and wrong-belief souls, indicating that Vyavahara Naya is effective in instructing both groups.

अज्ञानी जन के लिए, अभूतार्थ का ज्ञान। मात्र उसे ही जानते, उनको नहीं बखान ॥६॥

For the ignorant, the teaching of Abhutartha (unreal essence) is given. But for those who only understand Vyavahara Naya, these teachings do not apply. ॥6॥

Vyavahara: The word Vyavahara is derived from the root word avahara, with the prefix “vi” attached to it. Here, “vi” means “in a special way,” and avahara means “division.” Vyavahara Naya (the practical viewpoint) operates to the extent where division can be made.

Nishchaya: The word Nishchaya is formed from niḥ (without) and chaya (accumulation). It signifies that which is indivisible and unchanging, referring to the intrinsic essence of a substance. Therefore, the Vyavahara Naya is appropriate for those who are in the initial stages of spiritual practice, while the Nishchaya Naya (the viewpoint of ultimate reality) is concerned with the unchanging, indivisible nature of a substance.

In the Samayasara Kalasha, it is stated that for those who have taken their first step on the path of Vyavahara Naya (until they have attained the pure nature), this viewpoint serves as a support, like a guiding hand. However, for those who internally observe, have faith in, and are immersed in the pure essence of consciousness, devoid of external influences, Vyavahara Naya becomes unnecessary.

Hence, the harmony between Vyavahara Naya and Nishchaya Naya should always be followed. A person who only adheres to Vyavahara Naya without recognizing Nishchaya Naya cannot fully benefit from spiritual teachings. ॥6॥

English Translation

‘Bhavaprakashani’ Hindi tika by Pandit Munnalal Randheliya Varni

Meaning and Interpretation:

Since time immemorial, worldly beings, while existing in associated modes, have been in various ways ignorant and mistaken (holding false beliefs). Among them, many beings are such that they do not even know the names or true nature of the elements (substances). They lack knowledge of the substance, its qualities, and its modes, and they are unaware of the concepts of Nischaya (real perspective) and Vyavahara (practical perspective). They are innocent and naive. Additionally, there are some who know the names, characteristics, and distinctions of the elements, but due to their mistaken beliefs and understanding, they remain deluded. To correctly instruct all these beings, the Acharya suggests a method. This method, in the initial or lower stages, involves relying on the ‘Vyavahara Naya,’ meaning to use it for instruction or to take its help (consider it a starting point). The other method (Nischaya Naya) is not suitable as a means for them, because it is natural that they lack sufficient intellect and power of reasoning, and their previous conditioning still affects them.

According to the rule, knowledge of substances is gained by the soul through two perspectives: 1) Nischaya Naya (real perspective) and 2) Vyavahara Naya (practical perspective). However, Nischaya Naya reveals the true (real and inherent) nature of substances, while Vyavahara Naya provides knowledge of the false (unreal and apparent) nature of substances. This is the fundamental difference. Therefore, Vyavahara Naya is only a temporary, makeshift means to an end, but it is still to be discarded. On the other hand, Nischaya Naya is always an effective and permanent means, and it is desirable. Consequently, the purpose of Vyavahara Naya is only valid until one attains knowledge of the real nature of substances through its help. It is not meant for permanent reliance. Once Nischaya Naya becomes evident, Vyavahara Naya naturally fades away or becomes unnecessary because Nischaya Naya is self-sufficient and does not depend on anything else. Hence, it is said, “Nischaya Naya is self-dependent, Vyavahara Naya is other-dependent.” Summary: The usefulness (relevance) of Vyavahara Naya lasts only until the reign of Nischaya Naya is established. Just as a barbarian language is used only until a barbarian (ignorant) being learns the Aryan language, once the Aryan language is known, the use of the barbarian language ceases. This is how the purpose of Vyavahara Naya should be understood. However, both perspectives are considered interdependent, existing together, meaning that one perspective does not function without the other. In summary, when one perspective does not operate, the other perspective takes over, and they establish each other’s existence. This is because one cannot be identified without the other; they are mutually linked. Yes, the dominance of one over the other persists, but the subject matter of both perspectives remains the same substance.

Types and Functions of Vyavahara Naya (Practical Perspective):

Vyavahara Naya is of three types:

1. Bheda-ashrita or Bhedarupa Manyata (Perspective based on differentiation)
2. Paryaya-ashrita or Paryayarupa Manyata (Perspective based on modes)
3. Parashrita or Nimitta-adhina Manyata (Perspective based on external conditions)

These three types are presented in reverse order to explain their purpose. The process of imparting knowledge of the soul substance (Jiva Dravya) is explained through Vyavahara Naya.

Explanation:

1. Bheda-ashrita Vyavahara Naya: When an ignorant person wishes to understand the true nature (Nischaya Swaroop) of the soul (Jiva), if they are told right at the beginning that the true nature of the soul is “one with differentiated unity” (Ekatva Vibhakta), they will not be able to understand the Jiva Dravya (soul substance) for an infinite amount of time without being shown or without taking the help of Vyavahara Naya. Hence, in the initial stages, knowledge of the soul is imparted using the Paryaya-ashrita Vyavahara Naya by explaining that the being which has a human, divine, hellish, or animal body or possesses five senses is called a soul. The inquisitive listener then understands that since they have a human body and senses, they are a soul. Here, the knowledge of the soul is imparted through its associated modes, which is the function of Vyavahara Naya. Therefore, the listener’s knowledge of the soul substance is dependent on Vyavahara Naya and not on Nischaya Naya. This knowledge is metaphorical because the body and senses are modes of Pudgala (matter), which is distinct from the soul substance.
2. Parashrita (Nimitta-adhina) Vyavahara Naya: Similarly, the example of Parashrita (Nimitta-adhina) Vyavahara Naya is as follows: “The being that perceives through the senses is a soul.” Here too, the soul is described as being dependent on the senses (means or causes), which is another type of Vyavahara Naya. The listener gets the false impression that since they perceive through the senses, they are a soul. However, according to Nischaya Naya, the nature of the soul is independent and self-reliant; it is not dependent on external conditions or causes. This is another example of Vyavahara Naya.
3. Bheda-ashrita Vyavahara Naya: Another example of Bheda-ashrita Vyavahara Naya is: “The being that knows and perceives is a soul.” Here, knowledge and perception are differentiated within the indivisible and indescribable soul substance, hence it is a subject of Vyavahara Naya. In contrast, Nischaya Naya considers the soul substance as an indivisible whole. Although Vyavahara Naya is ultimately to be discarded, it is sometimes necessary in the initial stages to remove some ignorance about the nature of the soul substance, so it should not be completely disregarded. It is functional in the beginning.

Vyavahara Naya describes the impure nature of substances, which is not conducive to self-realization, making it obstructive and something to be discarded. However, all three types of Vyavahara Naya, while ultimately to be discarded, are somewhat useful in the initial stages for explaining things to the ignorant. However, the faith (belief) should not be incorrect or misguided; this is the conclusion.

Considering impure or external-oriented activities, or actions that result in transformations, not as beneficial or conducive to self-realization, but rather as merely incidental or circumstantial, and maintaining a constant focus on the true nature of the self, without letting one’s gaze shift away from it—this is the essence of avoiding fundamental error. Shifting one’s focus away from one’s true nature (such as knowledge and perception) towards external factors (like attachment) is fundamentally a mistake or a fault that should be avoided. Therefore, both indulgence and restraint (in their physical forms) are causes or conditions for bondage and are disturbances. Hence, the wise and passionless beings also renounce them, remaining as mere observers and stable in their own nature, absorbed in the solitary essence of the self.

On the other hand, those who adhere strictly to Vyavahara Naya (the practical perspective), possess impure knowledge, and engage in impure conduct are not suitable recipients of the teachings of the Jinavani (words of the Jinas) because they neither understand them nor are they interested in them. This flaw is inherent in them, making any attempt to teach them futile, and sometimes even counterproductive. Consequently, if someone mistakenly believes that the activities or actions occurring due to external circumstances are the true nature of the self, then their soul cannot achieve liberation. This belief should be firmly rejected. Recognizing what should be renounced and what should be adopted, and acting accordingly, is not prohibited—it is, in fact, the essence of the nature of things. A person with the right view will always respect and uphold this truth.

Therefore, those with the right view are superior. Even a being with attachment who is engaged in activities within external circumstances cannot completely abandon all such activities but remains detached or indifferent to them while engaging in them and, as much as possible, gradually renounces them. This is the distinguishing characteristic of one with the right view.

Conclusion:

Only one who has knowledge of Vyavahara Naya (the practical perspective) can attain understanding and practice of Nischaya Naya (the absolute perspective), but the approach to this is the one previously mentioned, and no other. In other words, while relying on Vyavahara Naya, just as the knowledge of a formless, invisible substance is imparted through tangible means like the body and senses—although this is impure (Vyavahara) knowledge—the primary goal is to impart the knowledge of Nischaya (absolute reality). Therefore, this process cannot be considered deceitful or misleading; rather, it is providing comfort to the soul according to its capacity, preventing it from becoming disheartened.

As this process continues, when the seeker naturally arrives at the true knowledge of Nischaya Naya, they themselves come to understand the relationship between Nischaya and Vyavahara Naya. They recognize that the knowledge they previously acquired was impure and abandon it, realizing that it was a deluded understanding of the soul through the means of the body and senses. This newfound insight reveals that Vyavahara knowledge pertains to the false, and Nischaya knowledge pertains to the truth. In this realization, no external aids such as the body or senses are needed; the soul itself becomes the sole support (self-sustained). The seeker comes to know their true self, the soul, as an indivisible entity.

Consequently, through Vyavahara Naya, the seeker initially perceives a relationship of cause and effect between external entities, but through Nischaya Naya, they discover that everything is found within their own self. When the seeker and the teacher align in understanding, it is then considered that the ultimate goal—attaining right knowledge—has been achieved. This is the intention conveyed by the Acharya in the mentioned verse. Until this fulfillment is achieved, all forms of knowledge generally fall under the category of ignorance because they do not serve as valid knowledge. Knowledge that is capable of leading one towards well-being and avoiding harm is considered valid, and that is only right knowledge (Samyak Gyan).
