Padmanandi Panchvinshatika Dharmopadeshamrit
३२) न परमियन्ति भवन्ति व्यसनान्यपराण्यपि प्रभूतानि । त्यक्त्वा सत्पथमपथप्रवृत्तयः क्षुद्रबुद्धीनाम् ।। ३२ ।।
टीका- परं केवलम् । व्यसनानि इयन्ति न भवन्ति। अपराण्यपि प्रभूतानि उत्पन्नानि भवन्ति। ये अपथप्रवृत्तयः कुमार्गे गमनशीलाः सत्पथं त्यक्त्वा अपथे चलन्ति तेषां क्षुद्रबुद्धीनां बहूनि व्यसनानि सन्ति ॥ ३२॥
अर्थ- केवल इतने (सात) ही व्यसन नहीं हैं, किन्तु दूसरे भी बहुत से व्यसन हैं। कारण कि अल्पमति पुरुष समीचीन मार्गको छोड़कर कुत्सित मार्गमें प्रवृत्त हुआ करते हैं।
विशेषार्थ – जो असत्प्रवृत्तियाँ मनुष्यको सन्मार्गसे भ्रष्ट करती हैं उनका नाम व्यसन है। ऐसे व्यसन बहुत हो सकते हैं। उनकी वह सात संख्या स्थूल रूपसे ही निर्धारित की गई है। कारण कि मन्दबुद्धि जन सन्मार्गसे च्युत होकर विविध रीतियोंसे कुमार्गमें प्रवृत्त होते हैं। उनकी ये सब प्रवृत्तियाँ व्यसनके ही अन्तर्गत हैं। अत एव व्यसनों की यह सात (७) संख्या स्थूल रूपसे ही समझनी चाहिये ।। ३२ ।।
English Translation
Na param iyanti bhavanti vyasanāny aparāṇy api prabhūtāni |
Tyaktvā satpatham apathapravṛttayaḥ kṣudrabuddhīnām || 32 ||
Vices are not limited to only these (previously mentioned ones);
there are many more that arise in abundance.
Those of petty intellect abandon the righteous path
and proceed along the path of wrongdoing.
Explanation (Expanded Meaning)
The number of vices is not confined to only those already described.
There are countless other forms as well.
People of shallow understanding abandon the noble path of righteousness
and choose instead the path of moral corruption.
Because of this deviation, innumerable forms of suffering and downfall arise in their lives.
Spiritual Insight
All actions that turn a person away from truth, restraint, and self-discipline
are called vyasanas (destructive habits).
These are not limited to a fixed number; they multiply according to one’s ignorance and moral weakness.
Thus, the wise must remain vigilant and firmly established on the righteous path (satpatha),
avoiding all forms of moral decline.

३३) सर्वाणि व्यसनानि दुर्गतिपथाः स्वर्गापवर्गार्गलाः वज्राणि व्रतपर्वतेषु विषमाः संसारिणां शत्रवः । प्रारम्भे मधुरेषु पाककटुकेष्वेतेषु सद्धीधनैः कर्तव्या न मतिर्मनागपि हितं वांछद्भिरत्रात्मनः ।। ३३ ।।
टीका – सर्वाणि व्यसनानि दुर्गतिपथाः सन्ति। स्वर्गगमने अपवर्ग-मोक्षगमने अर्गलाः। पुनः व्रतपर्वतेषु वज्राणि सन्ति। पुनः किंलक्षणानि व्यसनानि। संसारिणां जीवानां विषमाः कठिनाः शत्रवः वर्तन्ते। एतेषु निन्द्यव्यसनेषु। सद्धीधनैः विवेकिभिः। मनागपि मतिर्न कर्तव्या। किंलक्षणेषु व्यसनेषु। प्रारम्भे मधुरेषु पाककटुकेषु। किंलक्षणैः सद्धीधनैः। अत्र जगति आत्मनः हितं वांछद्भिः हितं (त) वांछकैः ॥३३॥
अर्थ – सभी व्यसन नरकादि दुर्गतियोंके कारण होते हुए स्वर्ग और मोक्षकी प्राप्तिमें अर्गला (बेंड़ा) के समान हैं, इसके अतिरिक्त वे व्रतरूपी पर्वतोंको नष्ट करनेके लिये वज्र जैसे होकर संसारी प्राणियोंके लिये दुर्दम शत्रुके समान ही हैं। ये व्यसन यद्यपि प्रारम्भमें मिष्ट प्रतीत होते हैं, परन्तु परिणाममें वे कटुक ही हैं। इसीलिये यहाँ आत्महितकी इच्छा रखनेवाले बुद्धिमान् पुरुषोंको इन व्यसनोंमें जरा भी बुद्धि नहीं करनी चाहिये ।। ३३ ।।
33. The Destructive Nature of All Vices (Sarvāṇi Vyasanāni)
Sarvāṇi vyasanāni durgatipathāḥ svargāpavargārgalāḥ
vajrāṇi vrataparvateṣu viṣamāḥ saṁsāriṇāṁ śatravaḥ |
Prārambhe madhureṣu pākakaṭukeṣv eteṣu saddhīdhanair
kartavyā na matir manāg api hitaṁ vāñchadbhir ātmanaḥ || 33 ||
English Translation
All vices lead toward paths of misery;
they act as barriers to attaining heaven and liberation.
They strike like thunderbolts upon the mountains of vows
and are fierce enemies of worldly beings.
Though sweet at the beginning, they turn bitter in the end.
Therefore, those wise people who cherish the wealth of right understanding
and seek their own true welfare
should not place even the slightest inclination toward such vices.
Explanation (Expanded Meaning)
All forms of vice lead a soul toward downfall and suffering.
They obstruct the attainment of both heavenly happiness and liberation (mokṣa).
Like thunderbolts striking mountains, they destroy vows, discipline, and spiritual resolve.
For worldly beings, these vices act as powerful and dangerous enemies.
Though they appear pleasant and attractive in the beginning,
their results are always painful and bitter in the end.
Hence, those endowed with wisdom and discernment—
who sincerely desire their own spiritual welfare—
should never allow even a trace of inclination toward such harmful tendencies.
Spiritual Insight
Vices may appear harmless or enjoyable at first,
but they gradually weaken discipline, destroy virtues,
and pull the soul toward suffering and bondage.
A seeker of true welfare must therefore reject them completely
and walk firmly on the path of self-control, purity, and wisdom.
