श्लोक 19
१९) बीभत्सु प्राणिघातोद्भवमशुचि कृमिस्थानमश्लाघ्यमूलं हस्तेनाक्ष्णापि शक्यं यदिह न महतां स्प्रष्टुमालोकितुं च । तन्मांसं भक्ष्यमेतद्वचनमपि सतां गर्हितं यस्य साक्षात् पापं तस्यात्र पुंसो भुवि भवति कियत्का गतिर्वा न विद्मः ।।१९ ।।
टीका – यन्मांसं बीभत्सु भयानकं घृणास्पदम्। यन्मांसं प्राणिघातोद्भवम्। यन्मांसं अशुचि अपवित्रम्। यन्मासुं कृमिस्थानम्। यन्मासं अश्लाघ्यमूलम्। इह लोके। महतां पुरुषाणां हस्तेन स्प्रष्टुं स्पर्शितुं शक्यं न। महतां अक्ष्णापि आलोकितुं न। तत् तस्मात्कारणात्। भक्ष्यमेतद्वचनमपि सतां गर्हितं निन्द्यं भवति। अत्र भुवि पृथिव्याम्। यस्य पुरुषस्य मांसं भक्ष्यं भवति तस्य मांसभक्षकस्य पुंसः । साक्षात् केवलम्। कियत्पापं भवति तस्य का गतिर्भवति वयं न विद्मः वयं न जानीमः ॥१९॥
अर्थ- जो मांस घृणाको उत्पन्न करता है, मृग आदि प्राणियोंके घातसे उत्पन्न होता है, अपवित्र है, कृमि आदि क्षुद्र कीड़ोंका स्थान है, जिसकी उत्पत्ति निन्दनीय है, तथा महापुरुष जिसका हाथसे स्पर्श नहीं करते और आंखसे जिसे देखते भी नहीं हैं ‘वह मांस खानेके योग्य है’ ऐसा कहना भी सज्जनोंके लिये निन्दाजनक है। फिर ऐसे अपवित्र मांसको जो पुरूष साक्षात् खाता है उसके लिये यहाँ लोकमें कितना पाप होता है तथा उसकी क्या अवस्था होती है, इस बातको हम नहीं जानते।
विशेषार्थ – मांस चूँकि प्रथम तो मृग आदिक मूक प्राणियोंके वधसे उत्पन्न होता है, दूसरी उसमें असंख्य अन्य त्रस जीव भी उत्पन्न हो जाते हैं जिनकी हिंसा होना अनिवार्य है। इस कारण उसके भक्षणमें हिंसाजनित पापका होना अवश्यंभावी है। अत एव सज्जन पुरूष उसका केवल परित्याग ही नहीं करते, अपितु उसको वे हाथसे स्पर्श करना और आँखसे देखना भी बुरा समझते हैं। मांसभक्षक जीवोंकी दुर्गति अनिवार्य है।।१९ ।।
Verse 19 – English Translation
bībhatsu prāṇighātodbhavam aśuci kṛmisthānam aślāghyamūlaṃ
hastenākṣṇāpi śakyaṃ yad iha na mahatāṃ spraṣṭum ālokituṃ ca |
tan māṃsaṃ bhakṣyam etad-vacanam api satāṃ garhitaṃ yasya sākṣāt
pāpaṃ tasya atra puṃso bhuvi bhavati kiyat kā gatiḥ vā na vidmaḥ || 19 |
“That which is repulsive, born from the killing of living beings, impure,
a dwelling place of worms, and ignoble in origin—
that which even noble souls cannot touch with their hands
nor bear to look at with their eyes—
to declare such flesh as fit for consumption is itself condemned by the virtuous.
Then what can be said of the sin incurred by the person
who actually consumes such flesh,
or of the destiny that awaits him in this world—who can truly know?”
Commentary (Ṭīkā – Explanation)
That flesh which is disgusting and fearsome in nature,
which arises from the killing of living beings,
which is impure and a dwelling place of worms,
and whose very origin is reprehensible—
Such flesh is so detestable that noble and virtuous persons do not even touch it with their hands, nor do they look at it with their eyes.
Therefore, even to say that such flesh is fit to be eaten is condemned by the wise.
In this world, for the person who actually consumes such flesh,
how great is the sin incurred and what kind of future state awaits him—this cannot even be fully comprehended.
Expanded Meaning (Viśeṣārtha)
Meat originates from the violent killing of innocent, voiceless beings such as animals.
Moreover, countless subtle organisms are inevitably generated within it, making its consumption inseparably linked with violence.
For this reason, eating meat inevitably results in grave sin.
Thus, noble and spiritually elevated persons not only renounce eating meat, but also refrain from touching or even looking at it.
Those who consume meat inevitably move toward spiritual degradation and suffering. Their downfall is unavoidable.
श्लोक 20
२०) गतो ज्ञातिः कश्चिद् बहिरपि न यद्येति सहसा शिरो हत्वा हत्वा कलुषितमना रोदिति जनः । परेषामुत्कृत्य प्रकटितमुखं खादति पलं कले रे निर्विण्णा वयमिह भवचित्रचरितैः ।। २० ।।
टीका-कश्चित् ज्ञातिः स्वगोत्री जनः। बहिरपि गतः ग्रामान्तरे गतः। यदि सहसा शीघ्रं न एति आगच्छति। तदा जनः शिरो हत्वा हत्वा रोदिति। किंलक्षणो जनः। कलुषितमनाः। परेषां जीवानां मृगादीनाम्। पलं मांसम्। उत्कृत्य छित्वा छेदयित्वा। प्रकटितमुखं प्रसारितमुखं यथा स्यात्तथा खादति। एवंविधः मूर्खलोकः। रे कले भोः पंचमकाल। इह संसारे। अथ इदानीम् अस्मिन् प्रस्तावे भवच्चरितैः वयं निर्विण्णाः ॥२०॥
अर्थ – यदि कोई अपना सम्बन्धी स्वकीय स्थानसे बाहिर भी जाकर शीघ्र नहीं आता है तो मनुष्य मनमें व्याकुल होता हुआ शिरको बार बार पीटकर रोता है। वही मनुष्य अन्य मृग आदि प्राणियोंके मांसको काटकर अपने मुखको फाड़ता हुआ खाता है। हे कलिकाल! यहाँ हम लोग तेरी इन विचित्र प्रवृत्तियोंसे निर्वेदको प्राप्त हुए है। ।।
विशेषार्थ- जब अपना कोई इष्ट बन्धु कार्यवश कहीं बाहिर जाता है और यदि वह समयपर घर वापिस नहीं आता है तब यह मनुष्य अनिष्टकी आशंकासे व्याकुल होकर शिरको दीवाल आदिसे मारता हुआ रुदन करता है। फिर वही मनुष्य जो अन्य पशु-पक्षियोंको मारकर उनका अपनी माता आदिसे सदाके लिये वियोग कराता हुआ मांसभक्षणमें अनुरक्त होता है, यह इस कलिकालका ही प्रभाव है। कालकी ऐसी प्रवृत्तियोंसे विवेकी जनोंका विरक्त होना स्वाभाविक है।। २० ।।

gato jñātiḥ kaścid bahir api na yady eti sahasā
śiro hatvā hatvā kaluṣita-manā roditi janaḥ |
pareṣām utkṛtya prakaṭita-mukhaṁ khādati palaṁ
kale re nirviṇṇā vayam iha bhava-citra-caritaiḥ || 20 ||

If a close relative goes away, even for a short time,
and does not return promptly,
people, with troubled minds, strike their heads again and again
and weep in anguish.
Yet the very same people,
cutting the flesh of other living beings,
opening their mouths wide,
consume it without remorse.
O Kaliyuga!
We grow weary and disheartened
on witnessing such contradictory and disturbing conduct
in this world.
Explanation (Devotional Reflection)
When a beloved family member goes away and does not return on time, the human heart becomes restless with fear and sorrow. One strikes the head in despair and weeps, fearing misfortune. Yet the same person mercilessly kills animals and birds, tearing their flesh and eating it without compassion.
Such behavior reveals a deep contradiction in human conduct. A person grieves intensely for their own loved ones, yet causes unbearable suffering to other living beings by separating them forever from their mothers and families. This cruel contradiction is a sign of the moral decline of Kali Yuga.
Seeing such distorted values and painful conduct of humanity, wise and sensitive souls naturally feel disillusioned and detached from the world. This verse reminds us that true compassion must extend to all living beings, not only to those we call our own.
