English translation of Uttar Puran parv 54- shlok 12 to 21
“The farmers of that land surpassed even the ascetics. Just as ascetics are upright and simple-hearted (Riju), so were the farmers. Just as ascetics are devoted to righteousness (Dharma), the farmers were righteous (or carried bows, Dharma-dhanush, to protect their fields). Just as ascetics are free from faults (Dosha), the farmers were faultless (or spent their nights, Dosha, awake guarding their crops). Just as ascetics endure the hardships of hunger and thirst, so did the farmers. Despite these similarities, the farmers were considered superior because while the efforts (Aarambha) of ascetics might succeed or fail in reaching their goal, the ‘efforts’ (planting/plowing) of these farmers were unfailingly successful.”12
“The lakes of that land were exceedingly pure (Nirmal), their waters were fit for drinking (tasted by the mouth), they were filled with lotuses, they destroyed all heat and distress (Santapa), they were unfathomably deep, and they captivated both the mind and the eyes.”13
“The fields of that land appeared like the royal treasuries of a king. Just as a king’s treasury is filled with every variety of grain, so were those fields overflowing with every kind of crop. Just as the treasury always provides satisfaction to all (through its wealth), those fields kept everyone content. And just as a treasury is endowed with vast riches, those fields were endowed with the wealth of grain; or, in another sense, they were ‘Sampanna’—accessible and fruitful from every direction.”14
“The villages of that land were so close to one another that a rooster could fly from the rooftop of one and land on the next. These villages were excellent, inhabited by many hardworking farmers, and overflowing with cattle, wealth, and grain. They were centers of constant activity and industry, yet they remained entirely free from distress or anxiety (Nirakul).”15
“Those villages were adorned with every kind of prosperity, as they were free from the fear of punishment (Danda) or any such disturbances. They were populated by people following their respective duties (Varnashrama), and the inhabitants lived in such a way that they served as an inspiration for others to follow.”16
“That country was equipped with pathways that either had water up to the shoulders (irrigation channels/deep moats for protection), or were so vast they seemed impassable, or were entirely free from any obstacles to movement. The trees there were heavy with fruit and devoid of thorns. Not a single one of the eight types of fear (Bhayas) was visible there, and the forests served as a refuge for the nearby streets, just as a husband is a refuge for a wife.” 17
“Every characteristic and quality that scholars of ethics and political science (Nitishastra) have prescribed for an ideal country was perfectly embodied in this land; indeed, it was the very definition of those ideals.”18
“In that country, the loss of wealth occurred only while giving charity to the worthy (Satpatra), and at no other time. The cessation of virtuous actions occurred only after the desired fruit (spiritual goal) was attained, and not otherwise. The ‘loss’ of height (bowing down) occurred only in the presence of modesty and respect (Vinaya), and nowhere else. And the loss of life occurred only when the natural lifespan (Ayu) reached its end, and never prematurely.”19
“In that land, if there was ‘hardness’ found in any high-rising objects, it was only in the breasts of the women (as a sign of youth and beauty), and nowhere else (not in the hearts of the people). If there was any ‘downfall’ (Prapat), it was only seen in the flowing musth of the elephants, and not in the moral character of the people. Or, if there was any ‘falling’ (Prapat), it was only the waterfalls cascading from the trees onto the mountain caves, and nowhere else.” 20
“In that country, if ‘Danda’ (a staff/rod) existed, it was only in the handle of the royal umbrella or the beam of a weighing scale; the people never faced ‘Danda’ (punishment or fines). If there was ‘sharpness’ (Tikshnata), it was found only in the brilliance of the city guards, never as cruelty in the hearts of the citizens. Obstructions (Rukavat) were found only in the form of bridges (which ‘obstruct’ water to cross it), never as obstacles in the lives of the people. And if there were ‘exceptions’ (Apavad), they were found only in the rules of Grammar, never as ‘Apavad’ (scandal or ill-repute) among the inhabitants.”21
