“The tips of the trees’ branches swayed in the breeze, while bees buzzed audibly upon them—so that it seemed as if the trees, waving their limbs and using the hum of the bees as their voice, were calling out to Bharata’s weary soldiers, inviting them to rest.” (102)
“Thereafter, the Emperor encamped his army upon the coastal plain of that forest, near the great gateway named Vaijayanta, by the shore of the southern ocean.” (103)
“That forest and Bharata’s army were alike in many ways: just as the forest was filled with sanāga—the cyperus plants—so too was the army filled with sanāga—mighty elephants; just as the forest abounded in bahupuṇṇāga—nāgakeśara trees—so was the army rich in bahupuṇṇāga—noble and virtuous men; just as the forest was adorned with sumanas—flowers—so too was the army adorned with sumanas—divine or pure-hearted warriors; and as the forest resounded with bahupatraratha—many-winged birds—so did the army abound with chariots and various mounts. Thus, Bharata’s great host came to rest in a forest that seemed its very mirror.” (104)
“The trees of that forest were like earthly kings (pārthiva in both senses—’born of the earth’ and ‘lords of the earth’); for just as kings possess noble radiance, so too did the trees offer splendid shade; just as kings are saphala—fruitful in wealth and success—so were the trees saphala—laden with fruits. Just as kings are tuṅga—lofty in nature and generous—so were the trees tuṅga—tall and grand. As kings are adorned with the splendour of numerous retinues and chariots (bahupatraparicchada), so too were the trees clothed in the rich abundance of many leaves. And just as kings remove the suffering born of poverty (tāpa), the trees dispelled the heat born of the sun’s rays. Thus, the soldiers of Bharata gladly took refuge in the forest, among trees that bore the very likeness of kings.” (105)
“Those trees, with their abundant fruits and soothing shade, seemed to offer a refuge of peace to the weary soldiers. The coolness of their branches, the fragrance of their blossoms, and the symphony of birds that nested within them made the forest a sanctuary for the tired and battle-weary host of Bharata. As the soldiers rested beneath the regal canopy of the trees, they were rejuvenated, as if touched by the very grace and sovereignty of the kings they resembled.” (106)
“The forest, with its majestic trees, became a kingdom unto itself, ruled by nature’s grandeur. The birds, as if attendants of royalty, filled the air with their melodious songs, and the very breeze, laden with the scents of blossoming flowers, seemed to pay homage to the Emperor’s army. The soldiers, resting in the shade of the trees, felt as though they were within a royal court, receiving all the honors and comforts of kings. In this serene haven, their fatigue melted away, and they were restored, as if blessed by the divine favor of the earth itself.” (107)
श्लोक ( Shlok ) 108
“In this tranquil and royal setting, the Emperor’s soldiers, now invigorated by the natural splendor surrounding them, felt as though they were partaking in the very essence of victory itself. The forest, with its towering trees and abundant blessings, seemed to reflect the glory of their leader, as if the land itself conspired to celebrate his triumphs. And so, amidst the harmonious symphony of nature, they rested in peaceful camaraderie, readying themselves for the next chapter of their journey.” (108)
As the days passed, the serene beauty of the forest continued to soothe the hearts of Bharata’s army. The steady rhythm of the breeze, the rustling of the leaves, and the occasional hum of distant bees seemed to weave a silent tapestry of restfulness. Each soldier, having found solace beneath the shade of the towering trees, felt a deep sense of connection to the land—one that mirrored the vastness of their leader’s dominion. It was as if the very soul of the earth had embraced them, filling them with renewed strength and unwavering resolve.” (109)
“There, the monkeys, shaking the clusters of kareñca fruits, disturbed the soldiers who rested beneath the creepers—for when the fine hairs of those fruits came in contact with the skin, they caused an unbearable itching.” (110)
“Near the lotus-laden ponds were the royal stables—graced with tender shoots of grass, soft enough to break beneath mere breath, and fit to graze upon at will—providing an ideal haven for the Emperor’s noble steeds.” (111)
