श्लोक 92 से 101 क्षेमंकर मनु

क्षेमंकर की आयु अटट और ऊँचाई 800 धनुष थी। पशु विकारग्रस्त हुए। प्रजा ने भयभीत होकर उनसे पूछा। क्षेमंकर ने पशुओं के बदलाव को कालदोष बताया। उन्होंने दुष्ट पशुओं को छोड़ने की सलाह दी। प्रजा ने गाय-भैंस के साथ रहना शुरू किया।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 3- Shlok 92 to 101

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 92

 अटटप्रमितं तस्य बभूवायुर्महौजसः । देहोस्सेधश्च चापानाममुष्यासीच्छताष्टकम् ॥९२॥

इस महाप्रतापी मनु की आयु अटट बराबर थी और शरीर की ऊँचाई आठ सौ धनुष की थी ।।92।। 

“The lifespan of this great and powerful Manu was equivalent to eight periods, and the height of his body was eight hundred dhanush (a unit of measurement).” ||92||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 93

 पुरा किल मृगा भद्राः प्रजानां हस्तलालिताः । तदा तु विकृतिं भेजुर्य्यात्तास्याः भीषणस्वनाः ॥९३॥

पहले जो पशु, सिंह, व्याघ्र आदि अत्यंत भद्रपरिणामी थे जिनका लालन-पालन प्रजा अपने हाथ से हीं किया करती थी वे अब इनके समय विकार को प्राप्त होने लगे मुंह फाड़ने लगे और भयंकर शब्द करने लगे ।।93।।

“Previously, the animals, such as lions, tigers, and others, who were very noble and whose care was personally taken by the people, began to undergo a transformation in his time. They started to roar loudly and make terrifying sounds.” ||93||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 94

तेषां विक्रियया सान्तर्गञ्जया तत्रसुः प्रजाः । पप्रच्छुस्तै तमभ्येत्य मनुं स्थितमविस्मितम् ॥९४॥

उनकी इस भयंकर गर्जना से मिले हुए विकार भाव को देखकर प्रजाजन डरने लगे तथा बिना किसी आश्चर्य के निश्चल बैठे हुए क्षेमंकर मनु के पास जाकर उनसे पूछने लगे ।।94।।

“Seeing the disruptive state caused by their terrifying roars, the people became frightened. Without any surprise, they calmly approached Manu Kshemankar and asked him about it.” ||94||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 95–98

इमे भद्रमृगाः पूर्व स्वादीयोनिस्तृणाङ्कुरैः । रसायनस्सैः पुष्टाः सरसां सलिलैरपि ॥९५॥

“अङ्काधिरोपणैर्ह स्तलालनैरपि “सान्त्विताः । अस्माभिरति विश्रब्धाः संवसम्तोऽनुपद्रवाः ॥९६॥

इदानीं तु विना हेतोः शृङ्गैरमिभवन्ति नः । दंष्ट्राभिर्नखररामैव विभिस्सन्ति च दारुणाः ॥९७॥

कोऽभ्युपायो महाभाग ब्रूहि नः क्षेमसाधनम् । क्षेमंकरो हि स भवान् जगतः क्षेमचिन्तनैः ॥९८॥

 हे देव, सिंह व्याघ्र आदि जो पशु पहले बड़े शांत थे, जो अत्यंत स्वादिष्ट घास खाकर और तालाबों का रसायन के समान रसीला पानी पीकर पुष्ट हुए थे, जिन्हें हम लोग अपनी गोदी में बैठाकर अपने हाथों से खिलाते थे, हम जिन पर अत्यंत विश्वास करते थे और जो बिना किसी उपद्रव के हम लोगों के साथ-साथ रहा करते थे आज वे ही पशु बिना किसी कारण के हम लोगों को सींगों से मारते हैं, दाढ़ों और नखों से हमें विदारण किया चाहते हैं और अत्यंत भयंकर दिख पड़ते हैं । हे महाभाग, आप हमारा कल्याण करने वाला कोई उपाय बतलाइए । चूँकि आप सकल संसार का क्षेम―कल्याण सोचते रहते हैं इसलिए सच्चे क्षेमंकर हैं ।।95-98।।

“O Lord, the lions, tigers, and other animals, which were once very calm and nourished by eating the most delicious grass and drinking water as sweet as nectar from ponds, whom we used to feed with our own hands while they sat in our laps, whom we trusted greatly, and who used to live with us peacefully without causing any disturbance—now those same animals, for no apparent reason, are attacking us with their horns, trying to tear us with their teeth and claws, and appear exceedingly frightening. O great one, please show us a remedy to ensure our well-being. Since you always think of the welfare and protection of the entire world, you are indeed the true Kshemankar.” ||95-98||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 99-100

इति तद्वचनाञ्जातसौहार्दो मनुरब्रवीत् । सत्यमेतत्तथापूर्वमिदानीं तु भयावहाः ॥९९॥

तदिमे परिहर्तभ्याः कालाद्विकृतिमागताः । कर्तव्यो नैषु विश्वासो बाधाः कुर्वन्स्युपेक्षिताः ॥१००॥

इस प्रकार उन आर्यों के वचन सुनकर क्षेमंकर मनु को भी उनसे मित्रभाव उत्पन्न हो गया और वे कहने लगे कि आपका कहना ठीक है । ये पशु पहले वास्तव में शांत थे परंतु अब भयंकर हो गये हैं इसलिए इन्हें छोड़ देना चाहिए । ये काल के दोष से विकार को प्राप्त हुए हैं अब इनका विश्वास नहीं करना चाहिए । यदि तुम इनकी उपेक्षा करोगे तो ये अवश्य ही बाधा करेंगे ।।99-100।।

“Upon hearing the words of those Aryans, Manu Kshemankar also felt a sense of friendship toward them and said, ‘What you say is correct. These animals were indeed peaceful before, but now they have become fierce. Therefore, they should be abandoned. They have been affected by the fault of time and have become disturbed. Now, they should not be trusted. If you ignore them, they will certainly cause harm.'” ||99-100||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 101

इत्याकण्यं वचस्तस्य परिजडुस्तदा मृगान् । श्रङ्गिणो दंष्ट्रिणः कूरान् शेषैः संवासमाययुः ॥१०१॥

क्षेमंकर के उक्त वचन सुनकर उन लोगों ने सींग वाले और दाढ़ वाले दुष्ट पशुओं का साथ छोड़ दिया, केवल निरुपद्वी गाय-भैंस आदि पशुओं के साथ रहने लगे ।।101।। 

“Upon hearing the words of Kshemankar, those people abandoned the wicked animals with horns and tusks, and began to live only with the harmless cows, buffaloes, and other gentle animals.” ||101||

श्लोक 82 से 91 सन्मति का उपदेश

तारों को देख प्रजा भयभीत हुई। सन्मति ने उन्हें भयमुक्त किया। उन्होंने तारों और ज्योतिश्चक्र का स्वरूप बताया। वे सूर्यग्रहण आदि समझाते थे। प्रजा ने उनकी प्रशंसा की। असंख्यात वर्ष बाद क्षेमंकर मनु हुए। वे मेरु-से शोभित थे।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 82

अकस्मात् तारका दृष्ट्रा संभ्रान्तान् भोगभूभुवः । भीतिर्विचछयामास ‘प्राणिइत्येव योगिनः ॥८२॥

 उस समय अकस्मात् तारों को देखकर भोगभूमिज मनुष्य अत्यंत भ्रम में पड़ गये अथवा अत्यंत व्याकुल हो गये । उन्हें भय ने इतना कंपायमान कर दिया जितना कि प्राणियों की हिंसा मुनिजनों को कंपायमान कर देती है ।।82।। 

At that time, upon suddenly seeing the stars, the pleasure-seeking humans became extremely confused or deeply distressed. Fear shook them so intensely, just as the sight of violence against living beings shakes ascetics. ||82||

 श्लोक ( Shlok ) 83

स समितिरनुध्याय क्षणं प्रावोच्चतार्यकान् । नोत्पातः कोऽप्ययं भद्रास्तन्मागात मियो वशम् ॥८३॥

सन्मति कुलकर ने क्षण-भर विचार कर उन आर्य पुरुषों से कहा कि हे भद्र पुरुषो, यह कोई उत्पात नहीं है इसलिए आप व्यर्थ ही भय के वशीभूत न हों ।।83।।

After pondering for a moment, Kulkar Sanmati said to those noble Aryan men, “O virtuous men, this is not any calamity, so do not succumb to fear unnecessarily.” ||83||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 84

एतास्तास्तारका नामैतच नक्षत्रमण्डलम् । ग्रहा इमे ‘सदोद्योता इदं तारकितं नमः ॥८४॥

ये तारे हैं, यह नक्षत्रों का समूह है, ये सदा प्रकाशमान रहने वाले सूर्य, चंद्र आदि ग्रह हैं और यह तारों से भरा हुआ आकाश है ।।84।। 

“These are stars, this is a cluster of constellations, these are ever-luminous celestial bodies like the Sun, Moon, and other planets, and this is the sky filled with stars.” ||84||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 85

ज्योतिश्चक्रमिदं शश्वद् व्योममार्गे कृतस्थिति । स्पष्टतामधुनायातं ज्योतिरङ्गप्रमाक्षयात् ॥८५॥

यह ज्योतिश्चक्र सर्वदा आकाश में विद्यमान रहता है, अब से पहले भी विद्यमान था, परंतु ज्योतिरंग जाति के वृक्षों के प्रकाश से तिरोभूत था । अब उन वृक्षों की प्रभा क्षीण हो गयी है इसलिए स्पष्ट दिखायी देने लगा है ।।85।।

“This celestial sphere has always existed in the sky and was present even before. However, it was concealed by the brilliance of the Jyotirang trees. Now that the radiance of those trees has faded, it has become clearly visible.” ||85||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 86

 इतः प्रभृत्यहोरात्रविभागश्च प्रवर्तते । उदयास्तमयैः सूर्याचन्द्रयोः सहतारयोः ॥८६॥

आज से लेकर सूर्य, चंद्रमा, तारे आदि का उदय और अस्त होता रहेगा और उससे रात-दिन का विभाग होता रहेगा ।।86।।

“From today onwards, the Sun, Moon, stars, and others will continue to rise and set, and this will lead to the division of day and night.” ||86||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 87

ग्रहणग्रह विक्षेपदि‌नान्ययमसंक्रमात् । ज्योतिर्शनस्य बीजानि सोऽन्ववोचद् विदां वरः ॥८७॥

उन बुद्धिमान् सन्मति ने सूर्यग्रहण, चंद्रग्रहण, ग्रहों का एक राशि से दूसरी राशि पर जाना, दिन और अयन आदि का संक्रमण बतलाते हुए ज्योतिष विद्या के मूल कारणों का भी उल्लेख किया था ।।87।। 

“That wise Sanmati also explained the phenomena of solar and lunar eclipses, the movement of planets from one zodiac sign to another, the transitions of days and solstices, and elaborated on the fundamental principles of astronomy.” ||87||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 88

अथ तद्वचनादार्या जाताः सपदि निर्भयाः । स हि लोकोत्तरं ज्योतिः प्रजानामुपकारकम् ॥८८॥

वे आर्य लोग भी उनके वचन सुनकर शीघ्र ही भयरहित हो गये । वास्तव में वे सन्मति प्रजा का उपकार करने वाली कोई सर्वश्रेष्ठ ज्योति ही थे ।।88।। 

Upon hearing his words, those Aryan people quickly became free from fear. Indeed, Sanmati was like a supreme guiding light, devoted to the welfare of the people.” ||88||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 89

 अयं सन्मत्तिरेवास्तु प्रभुर्नः सन्मतिप्रदः । इति प्रशस्य संपूज्य ययुस्ते तं स्वमास्पदम् ॥८९॥

 समीचीन बुद्धि के देने वाले यह सन्मति ही हमारे स्वामी हों इस प्रकार उनकी प्रशंसा और पूजा कर वे आर्य पुरुष अपने-अपने स्थानों पर चले गये ।।89।। 

“Praising and worshiping Sanmati, who bestowed proper wisdom, as their lord, those Aryan men returned to their respective places.” ||89||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 90

ततोऽन्तरमसंध्येयाः कोटी रुरुलहुज्य बस्सरान् । तृतीयो मनुरत्रासीत् क्षेमंकरसमाहृयः ॥९०॥

इनके बाद असंख्यात करोड़ वर्षों का अंतराल काल बीत जाने पर इस भरतक्षेत्र में क्षेमंकर नाम के तीसरे मनु हुए ।।90।।

“After them, an immeasurable span of countless millions of years passed, and then, in this Bharat region, the third Manu named Kshemakar appeared.” ||90||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 91

 युगबाहुर्महाकायः पृथुवक्षाः स्फुरत्प्रभः । सोऽत्यशेत गिरिं मेरुं “ज्वलन्मुकुटचूलिकः ॥९१॥

उनकी भुजाएँ युग के समान लंबी थीं । शरीर ऊँचा था, वक्षस्थल विशाल था, आभा चमक रही थी तथा मस्तक मुकुट से शोभायमान था । इन सब बातों से वे मेरु पर्वत से भी अधिक शोभायमान हो रहे थे ।।91।।

“His arms were as long as an era. His body was tall, his chest was broad, his radiance was shining, and his head was adorned with a crown. With all these qualities, he appeared even more magnificent than the Meru mountain.” ||91||

श्लोक 72 से 81 सन्मति कुलकर

प्रतिश्रुति ने व्यवस्थाएँ बताईं। प्रजा ने उनकी स्तुति की। असंख्यात वर्ष बाद सन्मति कुलकर हुए। वे आभूषणों से शोभित थे। उनकी आयु संख्यात वर्ष और ऊँचाई 1300 धनुष थी। ज्योतिरंग वृक्ष मंद हुए। रात्रि में तारे दिखे।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 72

इति तद्वचनात्तेषां प्रत्याश्चासो महानभूत् । [‘क्षेत्रे सोऽतः परं चास्मिन् नियोगान् भाविनोऽन्वक्षात् ] ॥७२॥

प्रतिश्रुति के इन वचनों से उन लोगों को बहुत ही आश्वासन हुआ । इसके बाद प्रतिश्रुति ने इस भरतक्षेत्र में होने वाली व्यवस्थाओं का निरूपण किया ।।72।। 

“The words of assurance from Pratishruti brought great reassurance to those people. Following this, Pratishruti outlined the arrangements that were to take place in this Bharatkshetra.”

 श्लोक ( Shlok ) 73 –74

प्रतिश्रुतिरयं धीरो यहः प्रत्यश्वणोद्वचः । इतीडांचक्रिरे नाम्ना ते तं संप्रीतमानसाः ॥७३॥

अहो भीमन् महाभाग चिरंजीव प्रसीद नः । मागपात्रापितं येन त्ववास्मद्व्यसमार्णवे ॥७४॥

इन धीर-वीर प्रतिश्रुति ने हमारे वचन सुने है इसलिए प्रसन्न होकर उन भोगभूमिजों ने प्रतिश्रुति इसी नाम से स्तुति की और कहा कि―अहो महाभाग, अहो बुद्धिमान् आप चिरंजीव रहें तथा हम पर प्रसन्न हों क्योंकि आपने हमारे दुःखरूपी समुद्र में नौका का काम दिया है अर्थात् हित का उपदेश देकर हमें दुःखरूपी समुद्र से उद्धृत किया है ।।73-74।।

“These courageous and noble Pratishrutis have listened to our words. Therefore, with great joy, those inhabitants of the Bhogbhumi praised them by the name ‘Pratishruti’ and said: ‘Oh, great and blessed one, oh, wise one, may you live long and remain pleased with us, for you have served as a boat in the ocean of our sorrows. By giving us beneficial counsel, you have rescued us from the ocean of suffering.'”

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 75

इति स्तुत्वार्यकास्ते तं सत्कृत्य च पुनः पुनः । लब्धानुशास्वतः स्वं स्वमोको जग्मुः सजानयः ॥७५॥

इस प्रकार प्रतिश्रुति का स्तवन तथा बार-बार सत्कार कर वे सब आर्य उनकी आज्ञानुसार अपनी-अपनी स्त्रियों के साथ अपने-अपने घर चले गये ।।75।। 

“In this manner, after praising Pratishruti and showing their respect repeatedly, all the Aryas, along with their wives, returned to their respective homes as per his instructions.”

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 76

 मनौ याति दिवं तस्मिन् काले गरुति च क्रमात् । मन्वन्तरमसंख्येया वर्षकोटीव्यतीत्य च ॥७६॥

सम्मतिः सन्मतिर्नाम्ना द्वितीयोऽभून्मनुस्तदा । प्रोत्सर्पदंशुकः प्रान्शुश्चलकल्पतरूपमः ॥७७॥

 इसके बाद क्रम-क्रम से समय के व्यतीत होने तथा प्रतिश्रुति कुलकर के स्वर्गवास हो जाने पर जब असंख्यात करोड़ वर्षों का मंवंतर (एक कुलकर के बाद दूसरे कुलकर के उत्पन्न होने तक बीच का काल) व्यतीत हो गया तब समीचीन बुद्धि के धारक सन्मति नाम के द्वितीय कुलकर का जन्म हुआ । उनके वस्त्र बहुत ही शोभायमान थे तथा वे स्वयं अत्यंत ऊँचे थे इसलिए चलते-फिरते कल्पवृक्ष के समान मालूम होते थे ।।76-77।।

“Thereafter, as time passed gradually and after the demise of Pratishruti, the Kulkar, an immeasurable number of crore years passed during the Manvantara (the intervening period between the reign of one Kulkar and the emergence of another). Then, the second Kulkar, named Sanmati, who possessed profound intellect, was born. His garments were exceedingly splendid, and he himself was extraordinarily tall, resembling a walking and moving Kalpavriksha (wish-fulfilling tree).”

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 78

स कुन्तली किरीटी च कुण्डली हारभूषितः । स्त्रग्वी मलयजालिप्तवपुरस्यन्तभावभौ ॥७८॥

उनके केश बड़े ही सुंदर थे, वे अपने मस्तक पर मुकुट बाँधे हुए थे, कानों में कुंडल पहिने थे, उनका वक्षःस्थल हार से सुशोभित था, इन सब कारणों से वे अत्यंत शोभायमान हो रहे थे ।।78।।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 79

 तस्यायुरमैमप्रख्यामासीत् संख्येयहायनम् । सहजं त्रिशतीयुक्तमुत्सेधो धनुषो मतः ।॥७९॥

उनकी आयु अमम के बराबर संख्यात वर्षों की थी और शरीर की ऊँचाई एक हजार तीन सौ धनुष थी ।।79।।

“His age was equal to the count of years of Amam, and the height of his body was one thousand three hundred bows.”

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 80

ज्योतिर्विटपिनां भूयोऽप्यासीत् काळेम मन्दिमा । प्रहाणामिमुखं तेजो निर्वास्थति हि दीपयत् ॥८०॥

During their time, the radiance of the wish-fulfilling trees (Kalpavriksha) of the Jyotiranga community had significantly dimmed, and their brilliance was on the verge of extinction, like a lamp about to go out. ||80||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 81

नभोऽङ्गणमधापूर्य तारकाः प्रचकाशिरे । नात्यन्धकारकलुषां बेलां प्राप्य तमीमुखे ।।८१ll

एक दिन रात्रि के प्रारंभ में जब थोड़ा-थोड़ा अंधकार था तब तारागण आकाशरूपी अंगण को व्याप्त कर―सब ओर प्रकाशमान होने लगे ।।81।।

“One day, at the beginning of the night, when there was a slight darkness, the stars spread across the sky-like courtyard, illuminating everything all around.”

“During their time, the radiance of the Jyotiranga race’s Kalpavrikshas had significantly diminished, and their brilliance was on the verge of extinction, like a lamp about to go out.”

श्लोक 63 से 71 प्रतिश्रुति कुलकर

प्रतिश्रुति पहले कुलकर थे। उनकी आयु पल्य का दसवाँ भाग और ऊँचाई 1800 धनुष थी। वे आभूषणों से शोभित थे। वे अवधिज्ञान धारक थे। उन्होंने प्रजा को अमृत-से वचन दिए। सूर्य-चंद्रमा को देख भयभीत प्रजा को उन्होंने आश्वस्त किया। वे ग्रहों का स्वरूप समझाते थे।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 63

प्रतिश्रुतिरिति ख्यातस्तदा कुलधरोऽग्रिमः । बिभ्रस्लोकातिगं तेजः प्रजानां नेत्रवद् बभौ ॥६३॥

उस समय वहाँ प्रतिश्रुति नाम से प्रसिद्ध पहले कुलकर विद्यमान थे जो कि सबसे अधिक तेजस्वी थे और प्रजाजनों के नेत्र के समान शोभायमान थे अर्थात् नेत्र के समान प्रजाजनों को हितकारी मार्ग बतलाते थे ।।63।। 

At that time, the first Kulakara, renowned by the name Pratishruti, was present. He was exceedingly radiant and shone like the eye of the people, guiding them toward a beneficial and righteous path, just as the eye enables vision. ||63||

पल्यस्य दशमो भागस्तस्यायुर्जिनदेशितम् । धनुःसहस्रमुत्सेधः शतैरधिकमष्टभिः ॥६४॥

जिनेंद्रदेव ने उनकी आयु पल्य के दसवें भाग और ऊँचाई एक हजार आठ सौ धनुष बतलायी है ।।64।। 

Lord Jinendra has described their lifespan as one-tenth of a Palyopama and their height as 1,800 Dhanushas. ||64||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 65–67

जाज्ज्वल्यमानम कुटो लसन्मकरकुण्डलः । कनकाद्रिरिवोतुङ्गो बिभ्राणो हारनिर्झरम् ॥६५॥

नानाभरणभाभार भासुरोदारविग्रहः । प्रोत्सर्पत्तेजसा स्वेन निर्भत्सितविग्रहः ॥६६॥

 महान् जगद्‌गृहोन्मानमानदण्ड इवोच्छितः । दधज्जन्मान्तराभ्यासजनितं बोधमिध्दधीः ॥६७॥

उनके मस्तक पर प्रकाशमान मुकुट शोभायमान हो रहा था, कानों में सुवर्णमय कुंडल चमक रहे थे और वे स्वयं मेरु पर्वत के समान ऊँचे थे इसलिए उनके वक्षःस्थल पर पड़ा हुआ रत्नों का हार झरने के समान मालूम होता था । उनका उन्नत और श्रेष्ठ शरीर नाना प्रकार के आभूषणों की कांति के भार से अतिशय प्रकाशमान हो रहा था, उन्होंने अपने बढ़ते हुए तेज से सूर्य को भी तिरस्कृत कर दिया था । वे बहुत ही ऊँचे थे इसलिए ऐसे मालूम होते थे मानो जगत्रूपी घर की ऊँचाई को नापने के लिए खड़े किये गये मापदंड ही हों । इसके सिवाय बे जंमांतर के संस्कार से प्राप्त हुए अवधिज्ञान को भी धारण किये हुए थे इसलिए वही सबमें उत्कृष्ट बुद्धिमान् गिने जाते थे ।।65-67।। 

A radiant crown adorned their head, golden earrings sparkled in their ears, and their towering height resembled Mount Meru. The jeweled necklace resting on their chest appeared like a cascading waterfall. Their elevated and magnificent body shone brightly under the brilliance of various ornaments, and their radiance surpassed even the sun.

So tall were they that they seemed like a measuring rod placed to gauge the height of the world-like house. Moreover, they possessed Avadhijñāna (clairvoyance), attained through impressions from their past lives, making them the most intelligent and wise among all. ||65-67||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 68–69

स्फुरद्दन्तांगुसलिलैर्मुहुः प्रक्षालयन् दिशः । प्रजानां प्रीणनं वाक्यं सौधं रसमिवोङ्गिरन् ॥६८॥

अदृष्टपूर्वी तौ दृष्ट्वा सभीतान् भोगभूमिजान् । भीतेर्निवर्त्तयामास तत्स्वरूपमिति ब्रुवन् ॥६९॥

वे दैदीप्यमान दातों की किरणोंरूपी जल से दिशाओं का बार-बार प्रक्षालन करते हुए जब प्रजा को संतुष्ट करने वाले वचन बोलते थे तब ऐसे मालूम होते थे मानो अमृत का रस ही प्रकट कर रहे हों । पहले कभी नहीं दिखने वाले सूर्य और चंद्रमा को देखकर भयभीत हुए भोगभूमिज मनुष्यों को उन्होंने उनका निम्नलिखित स्वरूप बतलाकर भयरहित किया था ।।68-69।।

When they spoke words that satisfied the people, it seemed as if they were pouring forth the nectar of immortality, while the radiant beams of their dazzling teeth appeared to cleanse the directions repeatedly. Seeing the previously unseen sun and moon, the Bhogabhūmija humans (inhabitants of the enjoyment lands) were frightened. To calm their fear, they explained the nature and significance of these celestial bodies as follows. ||68-69||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 70–71

एतौ तौ प्रतिरश्येते सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ ग्रहौ । ज्योतिरङ्गप्रभापायात् कालहासवशोद्भवात् ॥७०॥

सदाप्यधिन भोभाग भ्राम्यतोऽमू महाद्युती । न वस्ताभ्यां भयं किंचिदतो मा भैष्ट भद्रकाः ॥७१॥

 उन्होंने कहा―हे भद्र पुरुषो, तुम्हें जो ये दिख रहे हैं वे सूर्य, चंद्रमा नाम के ग्रह हैं, ये महाकांति के धारक है तथा आकाश में सर्वदा घूमते रहते हैं । अभी तक इनका प्रकाश ज्योतिरंग जाति के कल्पवृक्षों के प्रकाश से तिरोहित रहता था इसलिए नहीं दिखते थे परंतु अब चूँकि कालदोष के वश से ज्योतिरंग वृक्षों का प्रभाव कम हो गया है अत: दिखने लगे हैं । इनसे तुम लोगों को कोई भय नहीं है अत: भयभीत नहीं होओ ।।70-71।। 

He said, “O noble ones, what you are seeing are the planets named Sun and Moon. They are bearers of great radiance and continuously move across the sky. Until now, their light was obscured by the radiance of the Jyotiraṅga type of Kalpavṛkṣas, which is why they were not visible. However, due to the influence of time and the reduction of the power of the Jyotiraṅga trees, they have now become visible. You need not be afraid of them, so do not be fearful.” ||70-71||

श्लोक 52 से 62 सुषमादुःषमा काल

सुषमादुःषमा दो कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर का था। मनुष्यों की आयु एक पल्य और ऊँचाई एक कोश थी। वे एक दिन बाद भोजन करते थे। पल्य का आठवाँ भाग शेष रहने पर कल्पवृक्ष कमजोर हुए। आषाढ़ पूर्णिमा को सूर्य और चंद्रमा दिखे। वे आकाश में सुवर्ण-से शोभते थे। वे साधुओं और राजाओं का अनुकरण करते थे।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 52

यथावसरसंप्राप्तस्तुतीयः कालपर्ययः । प्रावर्त्तत सुराजेव स्वां मर्यादामलङ्घयन् ॥५२॥

उस समय न्यायवान् राजा के सदृश मर्यादा का उल्लंघन नहीं करता हुआ तीसरा सुषमादुःषमा नाम का काल यथाक्रम से प्रवृत्त हुआ ।।52।।

At that time, the third era named Sushama-Dushama began in due course, like a righteous king who does not violate the boundaries of propriety. ||52||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 53–54

 सागरोपमकोटीनां कोट्योद्वे लब्धसंस्थितौ । कालेऽस्मिन् भारते वर्षे मर्स्याः पल्योपमायुषः ॥५३॥

गब्यूतिप्रमितोच्छायाः “प्रियङ्गुश्यामविग्रहाः । दिनान्तरेण संप्राप्तधात्रीफलमिताशनाः ॥५४॥

उसकी स्थिति दो कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर की थी । उस समय इस भारतवर्ष में मनुष्यों की स्थिति एक पल्य की थी । उनके शरीर एक कोश ऊँचे थे, वे प्रियंगु के समान श्यामवर्ण थे और एक दिन के अंतर से आँवले के बराबर भोजन ग्रहण करते थे ।।53-54।।

Its extent was two Koḍākoḍi Sāgaras (a vast unit of measurement). At that time, the lifespan of humans in this Bhāratavarṣa was one Palyopama (an immeasurably long duration). Their bodies were one Kosha tall (a large height), their complexion was dark like Priyangu seeds, and they consumed food equal to the size of an Āmla fruit (gooseberry) once every day. ||53-54||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 55–56

ततस्तृतीयकालेऽस्मिन् व्यतिक्रामस्यनुक्रमात् । पल्योपमाष्टभागस्तु यदास्मिन् परिशिष्यते ॥५५॥

कल्पानोकहवीर्याणां कमादेव परिच्युतौ । ज्योतिरङ्गास्त्रदा वृक्षा गत्ता मन्दप्रकाशताम् ॥५६॥

इस प्रकार क्रम-क्रम से तीसरा काल व्यतीत होने पर जब इसमें पल्य का आठवाँ भाग शेष रह गया तब कल्पवृक्षों की सामर्थ्य घट गयी और ज्योतिरंग जाति के कल्पवृक्षों का प्रकाश अत्यंत मंद हो गया ।।55-56।।

In this way, as the third era gradually passed, and only one-eighth of a Palyopama remained, the power of the Kalpavṛkṣas (wish-fulfilling trees) diminished, and the radiance of the Jyotiraṅga type of Kalpavṛkṣas became extremely faint. ||55-56||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 57

 “पुष्पवन्तावथाषाश्यां पौर्णमास्यां स्फुरत्प्रमौ । सायान्हे प्रादुरास्तां तो गगनोमयभागयोः ॥५७।

तदनंतर किसी समय आषाढ़ सुदी पूर्णिमा के दिन सायंकाल के समय आकाश के दोनों भागों में अर्थात् पूर्व दिशा में उदित होता हुआ चमकीला चंद्रमा और पश्चिम में अस्त होता हुआ सूर्य दिखलायी पड़ा ।।57।।

Thereafter, at some point, on the day of Āṣāḍha Shukla Purnimā (full moon of the bright fortnight of Āṣāḍha), during the evening, a radiant moon was seen rising in the eastern sky, while the sun was setting in the western sky. ||57||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 58–62

चामीकरमयौ पोताविव ती गगनार्णवे । वियमजस्य “निर्याण” लिखितौ तिलकाविव ।।५८।।

पौर्णमासीविलासिन्याः क्रीडमानौ समुज्ज्वलो । परस्परकराश्लिष्टौ जातुषाविव गोलकौ ।।५९।

जगद्‌गृहमहाद्वारि विन्यस्तौ कालभूभृतः । प्रत्यग्रस्य प्रवेशाय कुम्माविव हिरण्मयौ ॥ ६०।।

तारा फेन अह आइवियत्सागरमध्यगौ । चामीकरमयौ दिव्यावम्मःक्रीयागृहाविव ।।६१॥

सद वृतत्वादसङ्गत्वात् साधुवर्गानुकारिणौ । शीततीव्ररत्वाच सदसद्द्भूमिपाविव ॥६२॥

उस समय वे सूर्य और चंद्रमा ऐसे शोभायमान हो रहे थे मानो आकाशरूपी समुद्र में सोने के बने हुए दो जहाज ही हों अथवा आकाशरूपी हस्ती के गंडस्थल के समीप सिंदूर से बने हुए दो चंद्रक (गोलाकार चिह्न) ही हों । अथवा पूर्णिमारूपी स्त्री के दोनों हाथों पर रखे हुए खेलने के मनोहर लाख निर्मित दो गोले ही हों । अथवा आगे होने वाले दुःषम-सुषमा नामक कालरूपी नवीन राजा के प्रवेश के लिए जगत्रूपी धर के विशाल दरवाजे पर रखे हुए मानो दो सुवर्णकलश ही हों । अथवा तारारूपी फेन और बुध, मंगल आदि ग्रहरूपी मगरमच्छों से भरे हुए आकाशरूपी समुद्र के मध्य में सुवर्ण के दो मनोहर जलक्रीड़ागृह ही बने हों । अथवा सद्वृत्त-गोलाकार (पक्ष में सदाचारी) और असंग-अकेले (पक्ष में परिग्रहरहित) होने के कारण साधुसमूह का अनुकरण कर रहे हों अथवा शीतकर-शीतल किरणों से युक्त (पक्ष में अल्प टैक्स लेने वाला) और तीव्रकर―उष्ण किरणों से युक्त (पक्ष में अधिक टैक्स से लेने वाला) होने के कारण क्रम से न्यायी और अन्यायी राजा का ही अनुकरण कर रहे हों ।।58-62।।

At that time, the sun and the moon appeared resplendent as though they were two golden ships floating in the ocean-like sky. Alternatively, they seemed like two circular marks made of vermilion adorning the cheeks of the sky-like elephant. Or, they resembled two charming lacquer spheres placed on the hands of the full moon-like lady.

They also appeared as though they were two golden pitchers placed at the grand gate of the earth-like palace, welcoming the new king of the upcoming Dushama-Sushama era. Similarly, they seemed like two splendid water-play pavilions made of gold in the middle of the sky-like ocean, filled with star-like foam and planets like Mercury and Mars representing crocodiles.

Furthermore, they seemed to emulate the monks who are circular (virtuous and balanced) and solitary (free from attachment). Or, they symbolized the just and unjust kings, with the moon being cool and gentle (collecting fewer taxes) and the sun being hot and intense (imposing heavier taxes). ||58-62||

श्लोक 41 से 51 सुषमा काल

आयु अंत में पुरुष जम्हाई और स्त्री छींक से स्वर्ग जाते थे। वे भद्र थे। सुषमासुषमा का वर्णन हुआ। इसके बाद सुषमा काल तीन कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर का था। यहाँ मध्यम भोगभूमि थी। मनुष्यों की आयु दो पल्य और ऊँचाई चार हजार धनुष थी। वे दो दिन बाद भोजन करते थे। फिर सुषमादुःषमा काल शुरू हुआ।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 41

तथा भुक्ता चिरं भोगान् स्वपुण्यपरिपाकजान् । स्वायुरन्ते विलीयन्ते से घना इव शारदाः ॥४१॥

 इस प्रकार वहाँ के मनुष्य अपने पूर्व पुण्य के उदय से चिरकाल तक भोगों को भोगकर आयु समाप्त होते ही शरदूऋतु के मेघों के समान विलीन हो जाते हैं ।।41।।

The people there, by the rise of their past good deeds, enjoy pleasures for a long time, and as soon as their lifespan ends, they vanish like the clouds of the autumn season. ||41||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 42

जम्भिकारम्ममात्रेण तत्कालोत्थक्षुतेन वा । जीवितान्ते तनुं त्यक्त्वा ते दिवं यान्त्यनेनसः ॥४२॥

आयु के अंत में पुरुष को जम्हाई आती है और स्त्री को छींक । उसी से पुण्यात्मा पुरुष अपना-अपना शरीर छोड़कर स्वर्ग चले जाते हैं ।।42।।

At the end of life, a man yawns, and a woman sneezes. Through this, virtuous souls leave their bodies and ascend to heaven. ||42||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 43

स्वभावमार्दवायोगवक्रतादिगुणैर्युताः । भद्रकास्त्रिदिवं यान्ति तेषां नान्या गतिस्ततः ॥४३॥

उस समय के मनुष्य स्वभाव से ही कोमल परिणामी होते है, इसलिए वे भद्रपुरुष मरकर स्वर्ग ही जाते हैं । स्वयं के सिवाय उनकी और कोई गति नहीं होती ।।43।। 

The people of that time are naturally gentle and virtuous by nature. Therefore, those noble souls, upon passing away, ascend to heaven. Apart from this, they have no other destination. ||43||

 इत्याद्यः कालभेदोऽवसर्पिण्यां वर्णितो मनाक् । उदक्कुरुसमः शेषो विधिरत्रात्रधार्यताम् ॥४४॥

इस प्रकार अवसर्पिणी काल के प्रथम सुषमासुषमा नामक काल का कुछ वर्णन किया है । यहाँ की और समस्त विधि उत्तरकुरु के समान समझना चाहिए ।।44।। 

In this way, a brief description of the first phase of the descending cycle, known as Sushama-Sushama, has been given. All other details of this period should be understood to be similar to those of Uttarakuru. ||44||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 45–46

ततो यथाक्रमं तस्मिन् काले गलति मन्दताम् । यातासु वृक्षवीर्यायुः शरीरोत्सेधवृत्तिषु ॥४५॥

सुषमालक्षणः कालो द्वितीयः समवर्त्तत । सागरोपमकोटीनां तिस्रः कोठ्योऽस्य संमितिः ॥४६॥

 इसके अनंतर जब क्रम-क्रम से प्रथम काल पूर्ण हुआ और कल्पवृक्ष, मनुष्यों का बल, आयु तथा शरीर की ऊंचाई आदि सब घटती को प्राप्त हो चले तब सुषमा नामक दूसरा काल प्रवृत्त हुआ । इसका प्रमाण तीन कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर था ।।45-46।।

Thereafter, when the first era gradually came to an end, and the wish-fulfilling trees, human strength, lifespan, height, and other attributes began to diminish, the second era, known as Sushama, commenced. Its duration was three Kodakodi Sagaropamas. ||45-46||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 47

तदास्मिन् भारते वर्षे मध्यभोग भुवांस्थितिः । जायते स्म परां भूतिं तन्वाना कल्पपादपैः ॥४७॥

उस समय इस भारतवर्ष में कल्पवृक्षों के द्वारा उत्कष्ट विभूति को विस्तृत करती हुई मध्यम भोगभूमि की अवस्था प्रचलित हुई ।।47।।

During that time, in this Bharat region, the state of a middle-grade Bhogabhumi (land of enjoyment) prevailed, spreading excellent prosperity through the wish-fulfilling trees. ||47||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 48

तदा मर्त्या ह्यमर्स्यामा द्विपल्योपमज्जीविताः । चतुःसहस्रचापोचविग्रहाः शुभचेष्टिताः ॥४८॥

उस वक्त यहाँ के मनुष्य देवों के समान कांति के धारक थे, उनकी आयु दो पल्य कीथी, उनका शरीर चार हजार-धनुष ऊँचा था तथा उनकी सभी चेष्टाएँ शुभ थीं ।।48।।

During that period, in this Bharat region, the state of a medium-level Bhogabhumi (land of enjoyment) prevailed, spreading supreme prosperity through the wish-fulfilling trees. ||47||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 49

कलाधरकलास्पर्विदेह ज्योत्स्नास्मितोज्ज्वलाः । दिनद्वयेन तेऽश्नन्ति वार्क्षमन्धोऽक्षमात्रकम् ॥४९॥

उनके शरीर की कांति चंद्रमा की कलाओं के साथ स्पर्धा करती थी अर्थात् उनसे भी कहीं अधिक सुंदर थी, उनकी मुसकान बड़ी ही उज्ज्वल थी । वे दो दिन बाद कल्पवृक्ष से प्राप्त हुए बहेड़े के बराबर उत्तम अन्न खाते थे ।।49।।

The radiance of their bodies competed with the phases of the moon, surpassing even them in beauty. Their smiles were exceptionally bright. They consumed the finest food, equivalent to a Baheda fruit, obtained from the Kalpavriksha, once every two days. ||49||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 50-51

शेषो विभिस्तु निश्शेषो हरिवर्षसमो मतः । ततः क्रमेण कालेऽस्मिन् नवसर्पत्यनुक्रमात् ॥५०॥

प्रहीणा वृक्षवीर्यादिविशेषाः प्राक्तना यदा । जघन्यभोगभूमीनां मर्यादाविरभूत्तदा ॥५१॥

उस समय यहाँ की शेष सब व्यवस्था हरिक्षेत्र के समान थी फिर क्रम से जब द्वितीय काल पूर्ण हो गया और कल्पवृक्ष तथा मनुष्यों के बल, विक्रम आदि घट गये तब जघन्य भोगभूमि की व्यवस्था प्रकट हुई ।।50-51।।

श्लोक 31 से 40 सुषमासुषमा की व्यवस्था

उन्हें रोग या परिश्रम नहीं था। स्त्रियाँ भी समान आयु और ऊँचाई की थीं। दोनों भोगों में अनुरक्त थे। उनका रूप और वचन सुंदर थे। कल्पवृक्ष उन्हें भोग देते थे। ये वृक्ष प्रकाशमान थे। ये दस प्रकार के थे। ये पुण्यात्माओं को भोग देते थे।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 31

‘निर्व्यायोमा निरातङ्का निर्णीहारा निराधयः । निस्स्वेदास्ते निराबाधा जीवन्ति पुरुषायुषाः ।। ३१

उन्हें न तो कोई परिश्रम करना पड़ता है, न कोई रोग होता है, न मलमृत्रादि की बाधा होती है, न मानसिक पीड़ा होती है, न पसीना ही आता है और न अकाल में उनकी मृत्यु ही होती है । वे बिना किसी बाधा के सुखपूर्वक जीवन बिताते हैं ।।

They do not have to undergo any labor, nor do they suffer from any illness. They are free from obstacles like excrement, mental distress, sweat, or death during a famine. They live their lives peacefully and joyfully, without any hindrances.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 32

 स्त्रियोऽपि तावदायुष्कास्तावदुत्सेधवृत्तयः । कल्पद्रुमेषु संसक्ताः कल्पवल्ल्य इवोज्ज्वलाः ॥३२॥

वहाँ की स्त्रियाँ भी उतनी ही आयु की धारक होती है, उनका शरीर भी उतना ही ऊँचा होता है और वे अपने पुरुषों के साथ ऐसी शोभायमान होती हैं जैसी कल्पवृक्षों पर लगी हुई कल्पलताएँ ।।32।।

The women there possess the same lifespan and height as the men, and they are as radiant and beautiful as the Kalpalata (wish-fulfilling creepers) that grow on the Kalpavrikshas (wish-fulfilling trees), accompanying their husbands in perfect harmony.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 33

पुरुषेष्वनुरक्तास्तास्ते च तास्वनुरागिणः । यावञ्जीवमसंक्लिष्टा भुञ्जते भोगसंपदः ॥३३॥

वे स्त्रियाँ अपने पुरुषों में अनुरक्त रहती है और पुरुष अपनी खियों में अनुरक्त रहते हैं । वे दोनों ही अपने जीवन पर्यंत बिना किसी क्लेश के भोग-संपदाओं का उपभोग करते रहते है ।।33।। 

The women remain deeply attached to their husbands, and the men remain equally devoted to their wives. Both continue to enjoy the pleasures and riches of life without any suffering, throughout their lives.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 34

स्वभावसुन्दरं रूपं स्वमावमधुरं वचः । स्वभावचतुरा चेष्टा तेषां स्वर्गजुषामिव ।।३४।।

देवों के समान उनका रूप स्वभाव से सुंदर होता है, उनके वचन स्वभाव से मीठे होते हैं और उनकी चेष्टाएँ भी स्वभाव से चतुर होती हैं ।।34।। 

Their appearance is naturally beautiful, like that of the gods. Their words are naturally sweet, and their actions are naturally skillful and graceful.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 35

रुच्याहारगृहातोद्य-माल्यभूषाम्बरादिकम् । मोगसाधनमेतेषां सर्वं कल्पतरूद्भवम् ।।३५।।

 इच्छानुसार मनोहर आहार, घर, बाजे, माला, आभूषण और वस्त्र आदिक समस्त भोगोपभोग की सामग्री इन्हें इच्छा करते ही कल्पवृक्षों से प्राप्त हो जाती है ।।35।।

According to their desires, all the materials for enjoyment—such as delightful food, homes, musical instruments, garlands, ornaments, and clothes—are instantly obtained by them from the Kalpavrikshas (wish-fulfilling trees).

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 36

मन्दगन्धवहा धूत चलदं शुकपल्लवाः । निध्यालोका विराजन्ते कल्पोपपदपादपाः ॥३६॥

 जिनके पल्लवरूपी वस्त्र मंद सुगंधित वायु के द्वारा हमेशा हिलते रहते हें । ऐसे सदा प्रकाशमान रहने वाले वहाँ के कल्पवृक्ष अत्यंत शोभायमान रहते हैं ।।36।। 

The Kalpavrikshas (wish-fulfilling trees) in that region are always radiant and extremely beautiful. Their leaves, which are like garments, constantly sway in the gentle, fragrant breeze, adding to their charm and splendor.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 37

काळानुमत्रलंभूतक्षेत्रसामर्थ्यवृंहिताः । कश्पक्रमास्तथा तेषां कल्पन्तेऽभीष्टसिद्धये ॥३७॥

 सुषमासुषमा नामक काल के प्रभाव से उत्पन्न हुई क्षेत्र की सामर्थ्य से वृद्धि को प्राप्त हुए वे कल्पवृक्ष वहाँ के जीवों को मनोवांछित पदार्थ देने के लिए सदा समर्थ रहते हैं ।।37।। 

The Kalpavrikshas, which have grown strong through the influence of the Sushma-Sushma period and the increased potency of the region, are always capable of providing the living beings there with whatever they desire.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 38

मनोभिरुचितान् भोगान् यस्मात् पुण्यकृतां नृणाम् । कल्पयन्ति ततस्तज्ज्ञैर्निरुक्ताः कल्पपादपाः ॥३८॥

वे कल्पवृक्ष पुण्यात्मा पुरुषों को मनचाहे भोग देते रहते हैं इसलिए जानकार पुरुषों ने उनका कल्पवृक्ष यह नाम सार्थक ही कहा है ।।38।। 

The Kalpavrikshas continue to provide desired pleasures to virtuous souls, which is why knowledgeable individuals have rightly called them Kalpavrikshas (wish-fulfilling trees), as their name is indeed meaningful.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 39–40

मद्यत्यंविभूषास्त्रग्ज्योतिर्दीपगृहाङ्गकाः । भोजनामत्रैत्रस्वाङ्गा दशधा कल्पशाखिनः ॥ ३९॥

इति स्वनामनिर्दिष्टां कुर्वन्तोऽर्थक्रियाममी । संज्ञामिरेव विस्पष्टा ततो नातिप्रतन्यते ॥४०॥

 वे कल्पवृक्ष दस प्रकार के हैं―1. मद्यांग, 2. तुर्यांग, 3. विभूषांग, 4. स्रगंग (माल्यांग), 5. ज्योतिरंग, 6. दीपांग, 7. गृहांग, 8. भोजनांग, 9. पात्रांग और 10. वस्त्रांग । वे सब अपने-अपने नाम के अनुसार ही कार्य करते हैं इसलिए इनके नाम मात्र कह दिये है; अधिक विस्तार के साथ उनका कथन नहीं किया है ।।39-40।।

श्लोक 21 से 30 सुषमासुषमा काल

भरतक्षेत्र में सुषमासुषमा काल चार कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर का था। यहाँ भोगभूमि जैसी स्थिति थी। मनुष्यों की आयु तीन पल्य और ऊँचाई छह हजार धनुष थी। उनके शरीर सुवर्ण-से थे। वे आभूषण धारण करते थे। पुण्य से उन्हें सौंदर्य मिलता था। वे बलवान और तेजस्वी थे। वे तीन दिन बाद भोजन करते थे।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 21

कालचक्रपरिभ्रान्त्या षट्समापरिवत्र्त्तनैः । तावुमौ परिवर्तते तामिस्त्रेतरपक्षवत् ॥२१॥

ये उत्सर्पिणी और अवसर्पिणी नामक दोनों ही भेद कालचक्र के परिभ्रमण से अपने छहों कालों के साथ-साथ कृष्णपक्ष और शुक्रपक्ष की तरह घूमते रहते हैं अर्थात् जिस तरह कृष्णपक्ष के बाद शुक्लपक्ष और शुक्लपक्ष के बाद कृष्णपक्ष बदलता रहता है उसी तरह अवसर्पिणी के बाद उत्सर्पिणी और उत्सर्पिणी के बाद अवसर्पिणी बदलती रहती है ।।21।।

Both the Utsarpini and Avsarpini periods, with their six subdivisions, continuously revolve through the cycle of time, much like the waxing and waning phases of the moon (Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha). Just as the Shukla Paksha follows the Krishna Paksha and vice versa, in the same way, after Avsarpini comes Utsarpini, and after Utsarpini comes Avsarpini, constantly alternating.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 22-23

 पुराऽस्यामत्रसर्पिण्यां क्षेत्रेऽस्मिन् मरताह्वये । मध्यमं खण्डमाधिस्य ववृधे प्रथमा समा ॥२२॥

 सागरोपमकोटीनां कोटी स्याच्चतुराहता । तस्य कालस्य परिमा तदा स्थितिरियं मता ॥२३॥

पहले इस भरतक्षेत्र के मध्यवर्ती आर्यखंड में अवसर्पिणी का पहला भेद सुषमा-सुषमा नाम का काल बीत रहा था उस काल का परिमाण चार कोडाकोडी सागर था, उस समय यहाँ नीचे लिखे अनुसार व्यवस्था थी ।।22-23।।

In the earlier period, the first division of Avsarpini called Sushma-Sushma was passing in the central Aryan region of this Bharata Kshetra. The duration of this time was equivalent to four Koda Koda Sagaras (vast cosmic oceans). During this period, the following arrangements existed, as described below.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 24

 देवोत्तरकुरुश्मासु या स्थितिः समवस्थिता । सा स्थितिर्मारते वर्षे युगारम्भे स्म जायते ॥२४॥

देवकुरु और उत्तरकुरु नामक उत्तर भोगभूमियों में जैसी स्थिति रहती है ठीक वैसी ही स्थिति इस भरतक्षेत्र में युग के प्रारंभ अर्थात् अवसर्पिणी के पहले काल में थी ।।24।।

In the northern regions called Devakuru and Uttarakuru, the conditions were similar to those in the early stages of the era, that is, during the first phase of Avsarpini in this Bharata Kshetra. The state of affairs in those regions was identical to the situation at the beginning of the cycle in Avsarpini.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 25

तदा स्थितिर्मनुष्याणां त्रिपल्योपमसम्मिता । षट्सहस्राणि चापानामुत्सेधो वपुषः स्मृतः ॥२५॥

 उस समय मनुष्यों की आयु तीन पल्य की होती थी और शरीर की ऊँचाई छह हजार धनुष की थी ।।25।।

At that time, the lifespan of humans was three Palyas, and the height of their bodies was six thousand Dhanushas (a unit of measurement).

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 26

वज्रास्थिवन्धनाः सौम्याः सुन्दराकारधारत्रः । निष्टतकनकच्छाया दीप्यन्ते ते नरोत्तमाः ॥२६॥

 उस समय यहाँ जो मनुष्य थे जनक शरीर के अस्थिबंधन वज्र के समान सुदृढ़ थे, वे अत्यंत सौम्य और सुंदर आकार के धारक थे । उनका शरीर तपाये हुए सुवर्ण के समान दैदीप्यमान था ।।26।।

At that time, the humans present here had bodies that were as strong as the bindings of bones, like the firmness of a thunderbolt. They were extremely gentle, possessing beautiful and graceful forms. Their bodies shone brightly, like gold that had been polished through intense heat.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 27

सुकुटं कुण्डलं हारो मेखला कटकाङ्गदौ । केयूरं ब्रह्मसूत्रं च तेषां शश्वद् विभूषणम् ॥२७॥

मुकुट, कुंडल, हार, करधनी, कड़ा, बाजूबंद और यज्ञोपवीत इन आभूषणों को वे सर्वदा धारण किये रहते थे ।।27।। 

They always wore ornaments such as crowns, earrings, necklaces, armlets, bracelets, bangles, and sacred threads (Yajnopavita).

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 28

ते स्वपुण्योदयोद्भूतरूपलावण्यसंपदः । रंरम्यन्ते चिरंस्त्रीभिः सुरा इव सुरालये ॥२८॥

वहाँ के मनुष्यों को पुण्य के उदय से अनुपम रूप सौंदर्य तथा अन्य संपदाओं की प्राप्ति होती रहती है इसलिए वे स्वर्ग में देवों के समान अपनी-अपनी स्त्रीयों के हाथ चिरकाल तक क्रीड़ा करते रहते हैं ।।28।।

The humans in that region continuously receive unmatched beauty and other treasures as a result of their accumulated merit. Therefore, they remain engaged in play with their respective partners for an eternal period, just like the gods in heaven.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 29

महासत्वा महाधैर्या महोरस्का महौजसः । महानुभावास्ते सर्वे महीयन्ते महोदयाः ॥२९॥

 वे पुरुष सबके सब बड़े बलवान् बड़े धीरवीर, बड़े तेजस्वी, बड़े प्रतापी, बड़े सामर्थ्यवान् और बड़े पुण्यशाली होते है । उनके वक्षःस्थल बहुत ही विस्तृत होते हैं तथा वे सब पूज्य समझे जाते हैं ।।29।। 

These individuals are all extremely strong, composed, courageous, radiant, glorious, powerful, and virtuous. Their chests are very broad, and they are all considered worthy of reverence and admiration.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 30

 तेषामाहारसंप्रीतिर्जायते दिवसैस्त्रिभिः । कुवलीफलमात्रं च दिव्यान्नं “विश्वणन्ति ते ॥३०॥

उन्हें तीन दिन बाद भोजन की इच्छा होती है सौ कल्पवृक्षों से प्राप्त हुए बदरीफल बराबर उत्तम भोजन ग्रहण करते हैं ।।30।। 

hey feel the need for food once every three days and consume the finest food, equivalent to the Badari fruit obtained from a thousand Kalpavrikshas (wish-fulfilling trees).

श्लोक 11 से 20 व्यवहारकाल और उसके भेद

व्यवहारकाल समय, आवलि आदि भेदों से जाना जाता है। यह सूर्यादि के चक्र से प्रकट होता है। भव और आयु का समय अगत होता है। इसके दो भेद हैं—उत्सर्पिणी और अवसर्पिणी। प्रत्येक का प्रमाण दस कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर है। दोनों के छह-छह भेद हैं। अवसर्पिणी के भेद सुषमासुषमा से दुःषमदुःषमा हैं। उत्सर्पिणी इसके विपरीत है। ये नाम सार्थक हैं। दोनों कालचक्र से घूमते हैं।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 11

 वत्तितो द्रव्यकालेन वर्त्तनालक्षणेन यः । कालः पूर्वापरीभूतो व्यवहाराय कल्प्यते ॥११।।

यह व्यवहारकाल वर्तना लक्षणरूप निश्चय काल द्रव्य के द्वारा ही प्रवर्तित होता है और वह भूत, भविष्यत् तथा वर्तमान रूप होकर संसार का व्यवहार चलाने के लिए समर्थ होता है अथवा कल्पित किया जाता है ।।11।।

This Vyavahar Kala (practical time) is initiated and operates solely through the eternal, real time, which is inherent to the substance of time (Nishchay Kala). It manifests as past, future, and present and is either capable of or conceived for facilitating worldly interactions and activities.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 12

समयावलिकोच्छ्वास-नालिकादिप्रभेदतः । ज्योतिश्चकभ्रमायत्तं कालचक्र विद्रुमुंधाः ।।12ll

वह व्यवहारकाल समय, आवलि, उच्छ्वास, नाड़ी आदि के भेद से अनेक प्रकार का होता है । यह व्यवहारकाल सूर्यादि ज्योतिश्चक्र के घूमने से ही प्रकट होता है ऐसा विद्वान् लोग जानते हैं ।।12।।

This Vyavahar Kala (practical time) is classified into various types, such as moments, intervals, breaths, and durations, based on different divisions. Scholars understand that this practical time becomes evident through the movement of celestial bodies like the sun and other astronomical cycles.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 13

  “नवायुष्कायकर्मादिस्थिति संकलनात्मकः । सोऽनन्तसमयस्तस्य परिवत्तौऽप्यनन्तधा ।।१३।।

यदि भव, आयु, काय और शरीर आदि की स्थिति का समय जोड़ा जाये तो वह अगत समयरूप होता है और उसका परिवर्तन भी अनंत प्रकार से होता है ।।13।।

If the time associated with the states of existence (bhava), lifespan (ayushya), body (kaya), and physical form (sharira) is considered, it is termed as Agata Kala (time yet to come). Its transformations occur in infinite ways.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 14

उत्सर्पिण्यवसर्पिण्यौ द्वौ भेदौ तस्य कीर्तितौ । उत्सर्पादव सर्पाच्य बलायुर्देहवर्मणाम् ।।१४।।

उस व्यवहारकाल के दो भेद कहे जाते हैं―1. उत्सर्पिणी और 2. अवसर्पिणी । जिसमें मनुष्यों के बल, आयु और शरीर का प्रमाण क्रम-क्रम से बढ़ता जाये उसे उत्सर्पिणी कहते हैं और जिसमें वे क्रम-क्रम से घटते जायें उसे अवसर्पिणी कहते हैं ।।14।।

The Vyavahar Kala (practical time) is said to have two divisions:

Utsarpini – A phase in which the strength, lifespan, and physical attributes of humans progressively increase.Avsarpini – A phase in which these qualities progressively decrease.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 15

कोटी कोज्यो दशैकस्य प्रमा’ सागरसंख्यया । शेषस्याप्येवमेवेष्टा तावुभौ कल्प इष्यते ॥१५॥

उत्सर्पिणी काल का प्रमाण दस कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर है तथा अवसर्पिणी काल का प्रमाण भी इतना ही है । इन दोनों को मिलाकर बीस कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर का एक कल्प काल होता है ।।15।।

The duration of the Utsarpini period is measured as ten Koda Koda Sagaras (vast cosmic oceans), and the duration of the Avsarpini period is also the same. When these two are combined, they form one Kalpa (cosmic era), which is equivalent to twenty Koda Koda Sagaras.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 16

षोढा स पुनरेकैको भिद्यते स्त्रमिदात्मभिः । तन्नामान्यनुकीर्त्यन्ते शृणु राजन् यथाक्रमम् ॥ १६।

हे राजन् इन उत्सर्पिणी और अवसर्पिणीकाल के प्रत्येक के छह-छह भेद होते हैं । अब क्रमपूर्वक उनके नाम कहे जाते हैं सो सुनो ।।16।। 

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 17–18

द्विरुक्तसुषमाद्यासीत् द्वितीया सुषमा मता । सुषमा दुःषमान्तान्या सुषमान्ता च दुःषमा ॥१७॥

पञ्चमी दुःषमा ज्ञेया सेमा षष्ठ्यतिदुःषमा । भेदा इमेऽवसर्पिण्या उत्सर्पिण्या विपर्ययाः ॥१८॥

अवसर्पिणी काल के छह भेद ये हैं―पहला सुषमासुषमा, दूसरा सुषमा, तीसरा सुषमादुःषमा, चौथा दुःषमासुषमा, पाँचवाँ दु:षमा और छठा अतिदु:षमा अथवा दुःषमदुःषमा ये अवसर्पिणी के भेद जानना चाहिए । उत्सर्पिणी काल के भी छह भेद होते हैं जो कि उक्त भेदों से विपरीत रूप हैं, जैसे 1. दुःषमादुःषमा, 2. दुःषमा, 3. दुःषमासुषमा, 4. सुषमादुःषमा, 5. सुषमा और 6. सुषमासुषमा ।।17-18।। 

The six subdivisions of the Avsarpini Kala (descending period) are as follows:

1. Sushma Sushma
2. Sushma
3. Sushma Dushma
4. Dushma Sushma
5. Dushma
6. Atidushma or Dushma Dushma

These are the divisions of the Avsarpini Kala that must be understood.

The Utsarpini Kala (ascending period) also has six subdivisions, which are the opposite of those in the Avsarpini Kala:

1. Dushma Dushma
2. Dushma
3. Dushma Sushma
4. Sushma Dushma
5. Sushma
6. Sushma Sushma

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 19

समा कालविभागः स्यात् सुदुसावहंगईयोः । सुषमा दुःषमेय्येवमतोऽन्वर्थत्वमेतयोः ॥१९॥

समा काल के विभाग को कहते हैं तथा सु और दुर् उपसर्ग-क्रम से अच्छे और बुरे अर्थ में आते हैं । सु और दूर् उपसर्गों को पृथक्-पृथक् समा के साथ जोड़ देने तथा व्याकरण के नियमानुसार सको ष कर देने से सुषमा तथा दुःषमा शब्दों की सिद्धि होती है । जिनका अर्थ क्रम से अच्छा काल और बुरा काल होता है, इस तरह उत्सर्पिणी और अवसर्पिणी काल के छहों भेद सार्थक नाम वाले हैं ।।19।।

The divisions of time are called Sama Kala, and the prefixes Su (good) and Dur (bad) are used in a sequence to denote favorable and unfavorable meanings. By combining the prefixes Su and Dur with Sama and applying grammatical rules, the terms Sushma (good time) and Dushma (bad time) are formed. These terms sequentially represent good time and bad time. In this way, all six subdivisions of Utsarpini and Avsarpini time have meaningful and appropriate names.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 20

उत्सपिंण्यवसर्पिण्यौ कालौ सान्तमिदाविमौ । स्थित्युत्सर्पावसर्पाभ्यां लब्धान्वर्थाभिधानको ॥२०॥

इसी प्रकार अपने अवांतर भेदों से सहित उत्सर्पिणी और अवसर्पिणी काल भी सार्थक नाम से युक्त हैं क्योंकि जिसमें स्थिति आदि की वृद्धि होती रहे उसे उत्सर्पिणी और जिसमें घटती होती रहे उसे अवसर्पिणी कहते हैं ।।20।।

In the same way, the Utsarpini and Avsarpini periods, with their respective subdivisions, are also endowed with meaningful names. Utsarpini refers to the period in which the states of existence, etc., continuously increase, while Avsarpini refers to the period in which these states continuously decrease.

भगवज्जिनसेनाचार्य विरचित आदिपुराण  तृतीयं पर्व Ādi purāṇa by Acharya Jinasena

यह पर्व महापुराण की पीठिका के रूप में कालद्रव्य, उत्सर्पिणी-अवसर्पिणी काल, और चौदह कुलकरों के कार्यों का वर्णन करता है।

श्लोक 1 से 10 : कालद्रव्य का स्वरूप

ग्रंथकर्ता वृषभनाथ को नमस्कार कर पीठिका का व्याख्यान करता है। कालद्रव्य अनादिनिधन और सूक्ष्म है। यह लोकाकाश में भरा है। यह पदार्थों के परिणमन में सहकारी है। जीव, पुद्गल आदि पाँच अस्तिकाय हैं। काल एकप्रदेशी होने से अस्तिकाय नहीं है। यह व्यवहारकाल का मूल है। इसमें गुण और पर्याय हैं। यह अनस्तिकाय सिद्ध होता है। व्यवहारकाल मुख्य काल से उत्पन्न है।

श्लोक 11 से 20 व्यवहारकाल और उसके भेद

व्यवहारकाल समय, आवलि आदि भेदों से जाना जाता है। यह सूर्यादि के चक्र से प्रकट होता है। भव और आयु का समय अगत होता है। इसके दो भेद हैं—उत्सर्पिणी और अवसर्पिणी। प्रत्येक का प्रमाण दस कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर है। दोनों के छह-छह भेद हैं। अवसर्पिणी के भेद सुषमासुषमा से दुःषमदुःषमा हैं। उत्सर्पिणी इसके विपरीत है। ये नाम सार्थक हैं। दोनों कालचक्र से घूमते हैं।

श्लोक 21 से 30 सुषमासुषमा काल

भरतक्षेत्र में सुषमासुषमा काल चार कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर का था। यहाँ भोगभूमि जैसी स्थिति थी। मनुष्यों की आयु तीन पल्य और ऊँचाई छह हजार धनुष थी। उनके शरीर सुवर्ण-से थे। वे आभूषण धारण करते थे। पुण्य से उन्हें सौंदर्य मिलता था। वे बलवान और तेजस्वी थे। वे तीन दिन बाद भोजन करते थे।

श्लोक 31 से 40 सुषमासुषमा की व्यवस्था

उन्हें रोग या परिश्रम नहीं था। स्त्रियाँ भी समान आयु और ऊँचाई की थीं। दोनों भोगों में अनुरक्त थे। उनका रूप और वचन सुंदर थे। कल्पवृक्ष उन्हें भोग देते थे। ये वृक्ष प्रकाशमान थे। ये दस प्रकार के थे। ये पुण्यात्माओं को भोग देते थे।

श्लोक 41 से 51 सुषमा काल

आयु अंत में पुरुष जम्हाई और स्त्री छींक से स्वर्ग जाते थे। वे भद्र थे। सुषमासुषमा का वर्णन हुआ। इसके बाद सुषमा काल तीन कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर का था। यहाँ मध्यम भोगभूमि थी। मनुष्यों की आयु दो पल्य और ऊँचाई चार हजार धनुष थी। वे दो दिन बाद भोजन करते थे। फिर सुषमादुःषमा काल शुरू हुआ।

श्लोक 52 से 62 सुषमादुःषमा काल

सुषमादुःषमा दो कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर का था। मनुष्यों की आयु एक पल्य और ऊँचाई एक कोश थी। वे एक दिन बाद भोजन करते थे। पल्य का आठवाँ भाग शेष रहने पर कल्पवृक्ष कमजोर हुए। आषाढ़ पूर्णिमा को सूर्य और चंद्रमा दिखे। वे आकाश में सुवर्ण-से शोभते थे। वे साधुओं और राजाओं का अनुकरण करते थे।

श्लोक 63 से 71 प्रतिश्रुति कुलकर

प्रतिश्रुति पहले कुलकर थे। उनकी आयु पल्य का दसवाँ भाग और ऊँचाई 1800 धनुष थी। वे आभूषणों से शोभित थे। वे अवधिज्ञान धारक थे। उन्होंने प्रजा को अमृत-से वचन दिए। सूर्य-चंद्रमा को देख भयभीत प्रजा को उन्होंने आश्वस्त किया। वे ग्रहों का स्वरूप समझाते थे।

श्लोक 72 से 81 सन्मति कुलकर

प्रतिश्रुति ने व्यवस्थाएँ बताईं। प्रजा ने उनकी स्तुति की। असंख्यात वर्ष बाद सन्मति कुलकर हुए। वे आभूषणों से शोभित थे। उनकी आयु संख्यात वर्ष और ऊँचाई 1300 धनुष थी। ज्योतिरंग वृक्ष मंद हुए। रात्रि में तारे दिखे।

श्लोक 82 से 91 सन्मति का उपदेश

तारों को देख प्रजा भयभीत हुई। सन्मति ने उन्हें भयमुक्त किया। उन्होंने तारों और ज्योतिश्चक्र का स्वरूप बताया। वे सूर्यग्रहण आदि समझाते थे। प्रजा ने उनकी प्रशंसा की। असंख्यात वर्ष बाद क्षेमंकर मनु हुए। वे मेरु-से शोभित थे।

श्लोक 92 से 101 क्षेमंकर मनु

क्षेमंकर की आयु अटट और ऊँचाई 800 धनुष थी। पशु विकारग्रस्त हुए। प्रजा ने भयभीत होकर उनसे पूछा। क्षेमंकर ने पशुओं के बदलाव को कालदोष बताया। उन्होंने दुष्ट पशुओं को छोड़ने की सलाह दी। प्रजा ने गाय-भैंस के साथ रहना शुरू किया।

श्लोक 102 से 111 क्षेमंधर और सीमंकर

क्षेमंकर की आयु समाप्त होने पर असंख्यात वर्षों बाद क्षेमंधर चौथे मनु हुए। उनकी आयु तुटिक वर्ष और ऊँचाई 775 धनुष थी। इन्होंने दुष्ट पशुओं से रक्षा के लिए लाठी का उपदेश दिया। इसके बाद सीमंकर पाँचवें मनु हुए। उनकी आयु कमल वर्ष और ऊँचाई 750 धनुष थी। इन्होंने कल्पवृक्षों की सीमा नियत की।

श्लोक 112 से 124 सीमंधर और विमलवाहन

सीमंधर छठे मनु हुए। उनकी आयु नलिन वर्ष और ऊँचाई 725 धनुष थी। इन्होंने कल्पवृक्षों की सीमाएँ चिह्नित कीं। इसके बाद विमलवाहन सातवें मनु हुए। उनकी आयु पद्म वर्ष और ऊँचाई 700 धनुष थी। इन्होंने सवारी के लिए पशुओं पर उपकरण लगाने का उपदेश दिया। फिर चक्षुष्मान आठवें मनु हुए। उनकी आयु पद्मांग वर्ष और ऊँचाई 675 धनुष थी। इन्होंने पुत्र-मुख देखने का भय दूर किया।

श्लोक 125 से 138 यशस्वान से चंद्राभ

यशस्वान नौवें मनु हुए। उनकी आयु कुमुद वर्ष और ऊँचाई 650 धनुष थी। इन्होंने संतानों को आशीर्वाद देने की प्रथा शुरू की। अभिचंद्र दसवें मनु हुए। उनकी आयु कुमुदा वर्ष और ऊँचाई 625 धनुष थी। इन्होंने चंद्रमा के साथ क्रीड़ा सिखाई। चंद्राभ ग्यारहवें मनु हुए। उनकी आयु नयुत वर्ष और ऊँचाई 600 धनुष थी। ये संतानों के साथ जीवित रहने की प्रथा लाए।

श्लोक 139 से 151 मरुदेव और प्रसेनजित

मरुदेव बारहवें मनु हुए। उनकी आयु नयुत वर्ष और ऊँचाई 575 धनुष थी। इन्होंने नाव और सीढ़ियाँ बनाने का उपदेश दिया। प्रसेनजित तेरहवें मनु हुए। उनकी आयु एक पर्व और ऊँचाई 550 धनुष थी। इन्होंने जरायु हटाने का उपदेश दिया। ये सूर्य-से शोभित थे।

श्लोक 152 से 163 नाभिराज का स्वरूप

नाभिराज चौदहवें मनु हुए। उनकी आयु एक करोड़ पूर्व और ऊँचाई 525 धनुष थी। वे आभूषणों से शोभित थे। उनका मुख चंद्रमा को लज्जित करता था। उनकी भुजाएँ सर्प-सी थीं। उनका कटि स्थिर और नाभि सुंदर थी। उनका शरीर इंद्र से भी श्रेष्ठ था।

श्लोक 164 से 171 मेघों का आगमन

नाभिराज के समय मेघ प्रकट हुए। वे बिजली और गर्जना से युक्त थे। ठंडी वायु बहने लगी। चातक और मोर हर्षित हुए। मेघ पर्वतों का अभिषेक करते थे।

श्लोक 172से 183 धान्य की उत्पत्ति

मेघों से नदियाँ बहीं। वे शोक-से रोते थे। बिजली नटी-सी नृत्य करती थी। चातक मेघों से प्रेम करते थे। मेघों से धान्य उत्पन्न हुए। ये पुण्य से पक गए।

श्लोक 184 से 192 प्रजा की व्याकुलता

धान्य मध्यम वृष्टि से फले। चावल, गेहूँ आदि उत्पन्न हुए। प्रजा उपयोग नहीं जानती थी। कल्पवृक्ष नष्ट होने से वे व्याकुल हुए। भूख से चित्त अशांत हुआ। वे नाभिराज से प्रार्थना करने लगे।

श्लोक 193 से 201 नाभिराज का उपदेश

प्रजा ने वृक्षों और झाड़ियों के उपयोग पूछा। नाभिराज ने उन्हें भयमुक्त किया। इन्होंने कहा कि ये वृक्ष भोग्य हैं। विषवृक्षों को छोड़ना चाहिए। ओषधियाँ स्वाद बढ़ाती हैं।

श्लोक 202 से 212 प्रजा का हित

नाभिराज ने रस निकालने और बर्तन बनाने का उपदेश दिया। प्रजा प्रसन्न हुई। भोगभूमि नष्ट हो गई। चौदह कुलकर विदेह से आए थे। इन्होंने पुण्य से सम्यग्दर्शन प्राप्त किया। ये कुल और वंश स्थापित करते थे।

नाभिराज ने रस निकालने, बर्तन बनाने का उपदेश। प्रजा प्रसन्न, भोगभूमि समाप्त। कुलकर विदेह से उत्पन्न, सम्यग्दर्शन धारक। कार्यों हेतु कुलकर नाम।

श्लोक 213 से 221 दंड और संख्याएँ

वृषभदेव और भरत भी कुलकर थे। कुलकरों ने दंड व्यवस्था बनाई। प्रथम पांच (हा), अगले पांच (हा, मा), शेष (हा, मा, धिक)। भरत ने शारीरिक दंड शुरू किए। आयु की संख्याएँ पूर्व, पर्व आदि हैं। इनका गुणाकार से निश्चय होता है।

श्लोक 222 से 239 कुलकरों का कार्य

संख्याएँ संख्यात और असंख्यात हैं। कुलकरों के नाम प्रतिश्रुति से नाभिराज तक हैं। इन्होंने भय दूर करने से लेकर नाल काटने तक के कार्य किए। गौतम ने यह कथन किया। सभा आनंदित हुई। वे वृषभदेव का पुराण कहने को तत्पर हुए।

भगवान वृषभनाथ को नमस्कार कर पीठिका शुरू। कालद्रव्य अनादिनिधन, सूक्ष्म, लोकाकाश में व्याप्त। यह पदार्थों के परिणमन में सहकारी, जैसे चाक की कील। पांच अस्तिकाय (जीव, पुद्गल, धर्म, अधर्म, आकाश), काल छठा द्रव्य, एकप्रदेशी होने से अनस्तिकाय। व्यवहारकाल (घड़ी आदि) से मुख्य काल सिद्ध। काल में गुण-पर्याय, द्रव्यत्व सिद्ध।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 1

पुराणं मुनिमानम्य जिनं वृषभमच्युतम् । महतस्तत्पुराणस्य पीठिका व्याकरिष्यते ।।१।।

मैं उन वृषभनाथ स्वामी को नमस्कार करके इस महापुराण की पीठिका का व्याख्यान करता हूँ जो कि इस अवसर्पिणी युग के सबसे प्राचीन मुनि हैं, जिन्होंने कर्मरूपी शत्रुओं को जीत लिया है और विनाश से रहित हैं ।।1।।

“I offer my salutations to Lord Vrishabhanatha and then proceed to explain the introduction of this great Purana, which is the most ancient sage of this Avasarpini era, who has conquered the enemies in the form of actions and is free from destruction.” (1)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 2

अनादिनिधनः कालो वर्त्तनालक्षणो मतः । लोकमाग्रः सुसूक्ष्माणुपरिच्छिन प्रमाणकः ।।२।।

कालद्रव्य अनादिनिधन है, वर्तना उसका लक्षण माना गया है (जो द्रव्यों की पर्यायों के बदलने में सहायक हो उसे वर्तना कहते हैं) यह कालद्रव्य अत्यंत सूक्ष्म परमाणु बराबर है और असंख्यात होने के कारण समस्त लोकाकाश में भरा हुआ है । भावार्थ―कालद्रव्य का एक-एक परमाणु लोकाकाश के एक-एक प्रदेश पर स्थित है ।।2।। 

“Time is an eternal and beginningless substance, and its characteristic is considered to be ‘Vartana’ (which refers to that which helps in the transformation of the states of substances). This time substance is extremely subtle, equivalent to the size of an atom, and because it is infinite, it fills the entire cosmic space.
Meaning: Every atom of the time substance is located in a specific region of the cosmic space.” (2)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 3

 सोऽसंख्येयोऽप्यनन्तस्य वस्तुराशेरुपग्रहे । वर्त्तते स्वगतानन्तसामर्थ्यपरिश्रृंहितः ।।३।।

 उस कालद्रव्य में अनंत पदार्थों के परिणमन कराने की सामर्थ्य है अत: वह स्वयं असंख्यात होकर भी अनंत पदार्थों के परिणमन में सहकारी होता है ।।3।।

“The time substance has the ability to cause the transformation of infinite substances. Therefore, although it is itself infinite, it collaborates in the transformation of countless substances.” (3)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 4

यथा कुलालचक्रस्य भ्रन्ते हें तुररिशला । तथा कालः पदार्थानां वर्शनोपग्रहे मतः ॥४॥

जिस प्रकार कुम्हार के चाक के घूमने में उसके नीचे लगी हुई कील कारण है उसी प्रकार पदार्थों के परिणमन होने में काल द्रव्य सहकारी कारण है । संसार के समस्त पदार्थ अपने-अपने गुणपर्यायों द्वारा स्वयमेव ही परिणमन को प्राप्त होते रहते हैं और कालद्रव्य उनके उस परिणमन में मात्र सहकारी कारण होता है । जब कि पदार्थों का परिणमन अपने-अपने गुणपर्याय रूप होता है तब अनायास ही सिद्ध हो जाता है कि वे सब पदार्थ सर्वदा पृथक्-पृथक् रहते है अर्थात् अपना स्वरूप छोड़कर परस्पर में मिलते नहीं हैं ।।4।।

“Just as the nail fixed under the potter’s wheel is the cause of its rotation, in the same way, the time substance is the cooperating cause in the transformation of substances. All the substances in the world naturally undergo transformation through their own inherent qualities and states, and the time substance merely acts as a cooperative cause in that transformation. Since the transformation of substances occurs according to their own inherent qualities and states, it naturally becomes evident that all these substances always remain distinct and do not merge with each other, leaving their own form unchanged.” (4)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 5–7

*स्वतोऽपि वैर्त्तमानानां सोऽर्थानां परिवर्त्तकः । यथास्वं गुणपर्यायैरतो नान्योऽन्यसं प्लः ।।

सोऽस्तिकायेष्वसंपाठानास्तीत्येके’ विमन्वते । षड्ङ्गन्येष्पदिष्टत्वाद्युक्तियोगाच्च तद्गतिः ।।६।

 मुख्यकल्पेन कालोऽस्ति व्यवहारप्रतीतितः । मुख्याइते न गौखोऽस्ति सिंहो माणवको यथा ॥७॥

 जीव, पुद्गल, धर्म, अधर्म, आकाश ये पाँच अस्तिकाय हैं अर्थात् सत्स्वरूप होकर बहुप्रदेशी है । इनमें कालद्रव्य का पाठ नहीं है, इसलिए वह है ही नहीं इस प्रकार कितने ही लोग मानते हैं परंतु उनका वह मानना ठीक नहीं है क्योंकि यद्यपि एक प्रदेशी होने के कारण काल द्रव्य का पंचास्तिकायों में पाठ नहीं है तथापि छह द्रव्यों में तो उसका पाठ किया गया है । इसके सिवाय युक्ति से भी काल द्रव्य का सद्धाव सिद्ध होता है । वह युक्ति इस प्रकार है कि संसार में जो घड़ी, घाटा आदि व्यवहार काल प्रसिद्ध है वह पर्याय है । पर्याय का मूलभूत कोई न कोई पर्यायी अवश्य होता है क्योंकि बिना पर्यायी के पर्याय नहीं हो सकती इसलिए व्यवहार काल का मूलभूत मुख्य काल द्रव्य है । मुख्य पदार्थ के बिना व्यवहार―गौण पदार्थ की सत्ता सिद्ध नहीं होती । जैसे कि वास्तविक सिंह के बिना किसी प्रतापी बालक में सिंह का व्यवहार नहीं किया जा सकता, वैसे ही मुख्य काल के बिना घड़ी, घाटा आदि में काल द्रव्य का व्यवहार नहीं किया जा सकता । परंतु होता अवश्य है इससे काल द्रव्य का अस्तित्व अवश्य मानना पड़ता है ।।5-7।।

Jiva (soul), Pudgala (matter), Dharma (medium of motion), Adharma (medium of rest), and Akasha (space) are the five Astikayas, meaning they possess existence and have multiple spatial units. Among these, the substance of time (Kala Dravya) is not included in the Astikayas, and some people argue that it does not exist because it is not a spatial entity. However, this belief is incorrect.

Although Kala Dravya is not part of the Astikayas due to being single-spatial (ekadeshi), it is included in the six fundamental substances (Dravyas). Additionally, the existence of Kala Dravya can be established through reasoning.

This reasoning is as follows: In the world, the conventional concept of time (Vyavahara Kala), such as seconds, minutes, and hours, is well-known. These are transformations (paryayas). Every transformation must have an underlying entity (paryayee), as a transformation cannot exist without its base. Therefore, the conventional notion of time is rooted in the fundamental entity of Kala Dravya.

Without a primary entity, the existence of a secondary or conventional entity cannot be established. For example, without the existence of a real lion, the figurative usage of ‘lion’ for a brave child cannot be justified. Similarly, without the existence of the primary Kala Dravya, the conventional use of time (such as seconds, minutes, and hours) cannot occur. Thus, the existence of Kala Dravya must be accepted.”

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 8

प्रदेशप्रचयापायाद कालस्यानस्तिकायता । गुणप्रचययोगोऽस्य इव्यत्वादस्ति सोऽस्त्यतः ।।८।।

यद्यपि इनमें एक से अधिक बहुप्रदेशों का अभाव है इसलिए इसे अस्तिकायों में नहीं गिना जाता है तथापि इसमें अगुरुलघु आदि अनेक गुण तथा उनके विकारस्वरूप अनेक पर्याय अवश्य हैं क्योंकि यह द्रव्य है, जो-जो द्रव्य होता है उसमें गुणपर्यायों का समूह अवश्य रहता है । द्रव्यत्व का गुणपर्यायों के साथ जैसा संबंध है वैसा बहुप्रदेशों के साथ नहीं है । अत: बहुप्रदेशों का अभाव होने पर भी काल पदार्थ द्रव्य माना जा सकता है और इस तरह काल नामक पृथक् पदार्थ की सत्ता सिद्ध हो जाती है ।।8।।

Although it lacks the characteristic of being multi-spatial (having multiple regions or divisions), and thus cannot be considered among the “Astitkayas” (extended substances), it nevertheless possesses numerous qualities like “Agurulaghu” (neither heavy nor light) and various transformations arising from these qualities. This is because it is a “Dravya” (substance). Every substance inherently contains a collection of qualities and their transformations.

The relationship of “Dravyatva” (substantiality) with qualities and transformations is not the same as its relationship with multi-spatiality. Therefore, even in the absence of multi-spatiality, the entity called “Kala” (time) can be considered a substance. In this way, the independent existence of a separate entity known as “Kala” is established.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 9

 अस्तिका यश्रुतिर्वक्ति कालस्यानस्तिका यताम् । सर्वस्य सविप४रवाज्जीवकामश्रुति यथा ॥९॥

जीव, पुद्गल, धर्म, अधर्म और आकाश को अस्तिकाय कहने से ही यह सब होता है कि काल द्रव्य अस्तिकाय नहीं है क्योंकि विपक्षी के रहते हुए ही विशेषण की सार्थकता सिद्ध हो सकती है । जिस प्रकार छह द्रव्यों में चेतनरूप आत्मद्रव्य को जीव कहना ही पुद्गलादि पाँच द्रव्यों को अजीव सिद्ध कर देता है उसी प्रकार जीवादि को अस्तिकाय कहना ही काल को अनस्तिकाय सिद्ध कर देता है ।।9।।

Translation:
Jīva, pudgala, dharma, adharma, and ākāśa are referred to as “astikāya” (having a corporeal form). This automatically implies that kāla (time) is not “astikāya” because the relevance of a specific attribute or designation is established only when its opposite exists.

For instance:

1. Among the six substances, jīva is described as sentient, which automatically classifies the remaining five substances (pudgala, dharma, adharma, ākāśa, and kāla) as non-sentient (ajīva).
2. Similarly, calling jīva and others “astikāya” implies that kāla (time) is “anastikāya” (not having a corporeal form).

Key Points:

• “Astikāya” refers to something that possesses both “existence” (astitva) and “corporeal form” (kāya or extension).
• Kāla (time), being formless and without corporeal dimensions, is categorized as “anastikāya.”

Thus, the designation “astikāya” gains significance and meaning only in the presence of its opposite, “anastikāya” (represented by kāla).

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 10

 कालोऽन्यो व्यवहारात्मा मुख्यकालव्यपाश्रयः । परापरत्वसंसूच्यो वर्णितः सर्वदर्शिभिः ।।१०।।

इस मुख्य काल के अतिरिक्त जो घड़ी, घाटा आदि है वह व्यवहारकाल कहलाता है । यहाँ यह याद रखना आवश्यक होगा कि व्यवहारकाल मुख्य काल से सर्वथा स्वतंत्र नहीं है वह उसी के आश्रय से उत्पन्न हुआ उसकी पर्याय ही है । यह छोटा है, यह बड़ा है आदि बातों से व्यवहारकाल स्पष्ट जाना जाता है ऐसा सर्वज्ञदेव ने वर्णन किया है ।।10।।

part from the primary or eternal time (main time), there exists another aspect of time, referred to as Vyavahar Kala (practical time), which encompasses units like hours, minutes, etc. It is essential to remember that practical time is not entirely independent of the primary time; rather, it is derived from and dependent on it. It is essentially a counterpart or manifestation of the primary time. Concepts such as “this is small,” “this is big,” etc., help in understanding practical time more clearly, as described by the omniscient sages.
