पल्लीवाल दिगम्बर जैन जाति

पल्लीवाल प्रारम्भ मे दिगम्बर जैन जाति थी लेकिन विगत 300-400 वर्षों से इस जाति मे कुछ परिवार श्वेताम्बर धर्म मानने वाले मी हो गये । लेकिन वर्तमान मे भी यह जाति मुख्यत. दिगम्बर धर्मानुयायी ही है।

The Palliwal Jain community, originally a Digambar Jain sect, has seen some families transition to the Shwetambar tradition over the past 300–400 years. However, the majority of the Palliwal community still remains staunch followers of the Digambar Jain tradition.

उत्पत्ति और ऐतिहासिक पृष्ठभूमि

खडेला से खडेलवाल, अग्रोटा से अग्रवाल, जाति के समान पल्लीवाल जाति की उत्पत्ति राजस्थान के पाली नगर से मानी जाती थी लेकिन डा. अनिलकुमार जैन ने नयी खोज के आधार पर यह सिद्ध किया है कि पल्लीवाल जाति दक्षिण भारत के पल्ली नगर में हुई थी। उनके अनुसार यदि पाली नगर मे पल्लीवाल जाति का उ‌द्भव हुआ होता तो यह जाति पल्लीवाल के स्थान पर पालीवाल कहलाती। क्योंकि आ के स्थान अ के प्रयोग का कोई औचित्य प्रतीत नहीं होता। आचार्य कुन्दकुन्द भी पल्लीवाल जाति में उत्पन्न हुये थे ऐसा पट्टावलियो में उल्लेख मिलता है।

Origin and Historical Background

The origin of the Palliwal community has been traditionally linked to Pali Nagar in Rajasthan. However, according to recent research by Dr. Anil Kumar Jain, the Palliwal community likely originated from Palli Nagar in South India, rather than Pali Nagar in Rajasthan. His reasoning is based on linguistic evidence: if the community had emerged in Rajasthan’s Pali Nagar, it would have been called Paliwal instead of Palliwal, as the use of “अ” instead of “आ” does not align with regional naming conventions.

There are mentions in Jain Pattavalis (chronicles) that Acharya Kundakunda, a revered Digambar Jain philosopher, was born into the Palliwal community.

प्रमुख ऐतिहासिक योगदान

फिरोजाबाद के निकट चन्द्रवाड़ नामक नगर था जिसकी स्थापना सवत् 1052 में चन्द्रपाल नामक जैन राजा की स्मृति में करवाई गई थी। चन्द्रवाड़ मै 13 वी शताब्दी से लेकर 16 वी शताब्दी तक चौहानवशी राजाओ का राज्य रहा । इन राजाओ के अधिकाण मन्त्री पल्लीवाल जैन थे ।

Prominent Historical Contributions

  • The Palliwal community served as key ministers during the reign of Chauhan dynasty kings who ruled Chandrawad (near Firozabad) between the 13th and 16th centuries. Chandrawad was established in 1052 CE in memory of Jain king Chandrapal.
  • The Palliwal Jains were prominent patrons of Jainism during this period.

साहित्यिक योगदान

पल्लीवाल जाति में कुछ कवि भी हुये है जिनमे बजरगलाल दौलतराम ग्रादि के नाम उल्लेखनीय है।

Literary Contributions

The community has also produced Jain poets, including Bajrgalal and Daulatram, whose works are notable in Jain literature.

वर्तमान जनसांख्यिकी और वितरण

वर्तमान में पल्लीवाल घागरा, फिरोजाबाद, कन्नोज, अलीगढ क्षेत्र एव ग्वालियर, उज्जैन श्रादि नगरी में मिलते है। आगरा क्षेत्र के पल्लीवालों के गोत्रों एवं कनोज, अलीगढ़ फिरोजाबाद के पल्लीवालों के गोत्रों में थोड़ा अन्तर है। मुरैना तथा ग्वालियर क्षेत्र के पल्लीवालों के 35 गौत्र हैं। जबकि नागपुर क्षेत्र के पल्लीवालों के 12 गोत्र ही हैं।

Current Demographics and Distribution

The Palliwal community is found in various regions across India, including:

  • North India: Firozabad, Kannauj, Aligarh, Gwalior, and Ujjain.
  • Central India: Morena and surrounding areas.
  • Nagpur region in Maharashtra.

Gotra Variations:

  • Palliwal Jains in Morena and Gwalior regions identify with 35 gotras.
  • In the Nagpur region, only 12 gotras are recognized.
  • There are slight differences in gotras among Palliwals from Agra, Kannauj, Aligarh, and Firozabad.

The Palliwal Digambar Jain community holds a significant place in Jain history for its contributions to religion, governance, and literature. While it has evolved over centuries, it remains a predominantly Digambar sect, with a rich cultural and historical legacy.

आदिपुराण पर्व 1 – श्लोक 172 से 180

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 172-175

किंनामानश्च ते सर्वे किंगोत्राः किंसनामयः । किंलक्ष्माणः किमाकाराः किमाहार्याः किमायुधाः॥१७२॥   

किं तेषामायुषो मानं किं वर्क्स किमथान्तरम् । कुतूहलमिदं ज्ञातुं विश्वं विश्वजनीन मे ।।१७३।।

कस्मिन् युगे कियन्तो वा युगांशाः किं युगान्तरम् । युगानां परिवर्ती वा कतिकृत्वः प्रवर्तते ॥१७४

युगस्य कथिते [कतिधे ] भागे मनयो सम्वते व किम् । किं वा मन्वन्तरं देव तत्वं मे ब्रूहि तच्वतः ॥ १७५

हे सबका हित करने वाले जिनेंद्र, यह भी कहिए कि वे सब किन-किन नामों के धारक होंगे ? किस-किस गोत्र में उत्पन्न होंगे ? उनके सहोदर कौन-कौन होंगे ? उनके क्या-क्या लक्षण होंगे ? वे किस आकार के धारक होंगे ? उनके क्या–क्या आभूषण होंगे ? उनके क्या-क्या अस्त्र होंगे ? उनकी आयु और शरीर का प्रमाण क्या होगा ? एक-दूसरे में कितना अंतर होगा ? किस युग में कितने युगों के अंश होते हैं ? एक युग से दूसरे युग में कितना अंतर होगा ? युगों का परिवर्तन कितनी बार होता है ? युग के कौनसे भाग में मनु-कुलकर उत्पन्न होते हैं ? वे क्या जानते हैं ? एक मनु से दूसरे मनु के उत्पन्न होने तक कितना अंतराल होता है ? हे देव, यह सब जानने का मुझे कौतूहल उत्पन्न हुआ है सो यथार्थ रीति से मुझे इन सब तत्वों का स्वरूप कहिए ।।172-175।। 

“Oh benefactor of all, Jinendra, please also tell me the names they will bear, the lineages they will be born into, who their siblings will be, what their characteristics will be, and what their physical forms will be like. What ornaments will they wear? What weapons will they possess? What will be the measure of their lifespan and bodies? How much difference will there be among them?

In which age will the parts of different epochs (yugas) exist? How much time separates one epoch from another? How often does the transformation of epochs occur? During which part of an epoch are the Manus or Kulakars born? What do they know? What is the interval between the birth of one Manu and another?

Oh Lord, I am curious to know all of this. Please describe to me the true nature of all these elements in detail.”172-175

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 176

लोकं कालावतारं च ‘वंशोत्पत्तिलयस्थितीः । वर्णसंभूतिमन्यश्च बुभुत्सेऽहं भवन्मुखात् ।।१७६।।

इसके सिवाय लोक का स्वरूप, काल का अवतरण, वंशों की उत्पत्ति, विनाश और स्थिति, क्षत्रिय आदि वर्णों की उत्पत्ति भी मैं आपके श्रीमुख से जानना चाहता हूँ ।।176।। 

Beyond this, I also wish to know from your divine words about the nature of the universe, the descent of time, the origin, destruction, and continuity of dynasties, as well as the emergence of the Kshatriya and other varnas (classes).”

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 177

अनादिवासनोद्‌मसमिथ्याज्ञानसमुत्थितम् । नुद मे संशयध्वान्तं जिनार्कवचनांशुमिः ॥१७७।।

हे जिनेंद्रसूर्य, अनादिकाल की वासना से उत्पन्न हुए मिथ्याज्ञान से सातिशय बड़े हुए मेरे इस संशयरूपी अंधकार को आप अपने वचनरूप किरणों के द्वारा शीघ्र ही नष्ट कीजिए ।।177।।

“Oh Sun-like Jinendra, the darkness of my doubts, which has greatly intensified due to the false knowledge arising from the tendencies of beginningless time, please swiftly dispel it with the rays of your words.”177

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 178-179

इति प्रश्नमुपन्यस्य भरतः ” शातमातरः । “विरराम यथास्थानमासीनश्च कथोत्सुकः ।।१७८।।

लब्धावसरमिद्धार्थ सुसंबद्धमनुद्धतम् । अभ्यनन्दत् सभा कृत्स्ना प्रश्नमस्येशितुर्विशाम् ॥१७९।

इस प्रकार प्रश्न कर महाराज भरत जब चुप हो गये और कथा सुनने में उत्सुक होते हुए अपने योग्य आसन पर बैठ गये तब समस्त सभा ने भरत महाराज के इस प्रश्न की सातिशय प्रशंसा की जो कि समय के अनुसार किया गया था, प्रकाशमान अर्थों से भरा हुआ था, पूर्वापर संबंध से सहित था तथा उद्धतपने से रहित था ।।178-179।। 

After asking these questions, King Bharat fell silent and, eager to listen to the discourse, took his seat on the appropriate throne. The entire assembly highly praised King Bharat’s questions, as they were timely, filled with profound meaning, connected with proper reasoning, and free from any arrogance.”178-179

 तत्क्षणं सस्कथाप्रश्नाप्त्तदर्पितदृशः सुराः । पुष्पवृष्टिमिवातेनुः प्रतीता भरतं प्रति ॥१८०॥

उस समय उनके इस प्रश्न को सुनकर सब देवता लोग महाराज भरत की ओर आँख उठाकर देखने लगे जिससे ऐसा मालूम होता था मानो वे उन पर पुष्पवृष्टि ही कर रहे हैं ।।180।।

“At that moment, upon hearing his question, all the gods turned their eyes towards King Bharat, and it seemed as though they were showering him with flowers.”180

श्लोक 167 से 171 भरत का प्रश्न

भक्ति से भरत भगवान से पूछते हैं। वे तीर्थंकर, चक्रवर्ती, नारायण, बलभद्र, और प्रतिनारायणों का चरित्र सुनना चाहते हैं। उनके नाम, गोत्र, लक्षण, और संख्या जानना चाहते हैं।


English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 1- Shlok 167 to 171

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 167

गणेशमथवोलतच त्वां प्रष्टुं क इवाहकम्। मफो न गणयामीदमतिमभिःश्च नेष्यते ॥१६७॥

हे देव, यद्यपि लोग कह सकते हैं कि गणधर को छोड़कर साक्षात् आपसे पूछने वाला यह कौन है ? तथापि मैं इस बात को कुछ नहीं समझता, आपकी सातिशय भक्ति ही मुझे आपसे पूछने के लिए प्रेरित कर रही है ।।167।।

“Oh Lord, although people might say, ‘Who is this person, apart from the Ganadharas, to directly ask you questions?’ I do not concern myself with such thoughts. It is my intense devotion to you that inspires me to ask you these questions.”

 

 

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 168

 ‘किंविशेषैषितैषा मे किमनीषल्ल मादरः । ‘श्रद्धोत्कर्षांश्चिकीर्षा ‘नु ‘मुखरीकुरुतेऽय माम्॥१६८॥

हे भगवन्, पदार्थ का विशेष स्वरूप जानने की इच्छा, अधिक लाभ की भावना, श्रद्धा की अधिकता अथवा कुछ करने की इच्छा ही मुझे आपके सामने वाचाल कर रही है ।।168।।

Oh Lord, it is the desire to understand the true nature of reality, the thought of attaining greater benefit, the intensity of my faith, or the aspiration to act that is making me speak so much before you.”

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 169-170-171

भगवन् श्रोतुकामोऽस्मि विश्वभुग्धर्मसंग्रहम् । पुराणं महतां पुंसां प्रसीद कुरु मे दयाम् ॥१६९।।

स्वरसमाः कति सर्वज्ञा मत्समाः कति चक्रिणः । केशवाः कति वा देव सरामाः कति त‌द्विषः ।।१७०।।

कीदृशं “वृत्तकं तेषां वृत्तं वर्त्यच्च सांप्रतम् । तत्सर्व ज्ञातुकामोऽस्मि वद मे वदतां वर ।।१७१

हे भगवन्, मैं तीर्थकर आदि महापुरुषों के उस पुण्य को सुनना चाहता हूँ जिसमें सर्वज्ञप्रणीत समस्त धर्मों का संग्रह किया गया हो । हे देव, मुझ पर प्रसन्न होइए, दया कीजिए और कहिए कि आपके समान कितने सर्वज्ञ-तीर्थकर होंगे ? मेरे समान कितने चक्रवर्ती होंगे ? कितने नारायण, कितने बलभद्र और कितने उनके शत्रु-प्रतिनारायण होंगे ? उनका अतीत चरित्र कैसा था ? वर्तमान में और भविष्यत् में कैसा होगा ? हे वक्तृश्रेष्ठ, यह सब मैं आपसे सुनना चाहता हूँ ।।169-171।। 

“Oh Lord, I wish to hear about the merit of the Tirthankaras and other great souls, in which the entirety of the teachings prescribed by the omniscient beings has been collected. Oh Divine One, be pleased with me, show compassion, and tell me—how many omniscient Tirthankaras like you will there be? How many universal emperors (Chakravartins) like me will exist? How many Narayans, Balbhadras, and their adversaries, the anti-Narayans (Pratinarayans), will there be? What were their past lives like? What will they be like in the present and the future? Oh supreme orator, I wish to hear all of this from you.”

Jaiswal Digambar Jain Community

जैसवाल दिगम्बर जैन जाति

17 वी शताब्दी के कवि बुलाखीचन्द जैसवाल जाति के थे। उन्होंने अपने वचन कोष (सवत् 1737) में जैसवाल जाति की उत्पत्ति जैसलमेर नगर से मानी है। ( ref. कविवर बुलाकीचन्द, बुलाकोवास एवं हेमराज, पृष्ठ सख्या, 108-114)

The Jaiswal Jain community is a prominent sect of Digambar Jains, with historical and cultural roots tracing back to Jaisalmer. The 17th-century poet Bulakhichand, a member of this community, affirmed in his work Vachan Kosh (1737 CE) that the Jaiswals originated from Jaisalmer.

ऐतिहासिक उत्पत्ति एवं शाखाएँ

यह जाति भगवान महावीर के उपदेश से जैन धर्म में दीक्षित हुई। जैसवाल दो उपजातियों में विभक्त हैं- एक तिरोतिया एवं दूसरा उपरोतिया । उपरोतिया जैसवाल काष्ठासंघी एव तिरोतिया मूलसंधी जैन धर्मावलम्बी है। उपरोतया शाखा के 36 गोत्र एवं तिरोतिया शाखा के 46 गोत्र है। (उपरोतिया गोत्र छत्तीस, तिरोतिया गनि उहयालीस) जैसवाल इक्ष्वाकु कुल के क्षत्रिय थे जो वैश्य कुल में परिवर्तित हो गये थे। (ref. जंसवाल इक्ष्वाकु कुल तिनि को सुना प्रबन्ध )

Historical Origin and Branches

The community is believed to have been initiated into Jainism through the teachings of Lord Mahavira. Over time, the Jaiswals branched into two subgroups:

  1. Tirotiya – Followers of the Mulasangha tradition.
  2. Uprotiya – Followers of the Kasthasangha tradition.

The Uprotiya branch comprises 36 gotras, while the Tirotiya branch has 46 gotras.

Historically, the Jaiswals are considered to have been Kshatriyas of the Ikshvaku lineage, who later transitioned into the Vaishya caste. (Reference: Jaiswal Ikshvaku Kul Tini Ko Suna Prabandh)

उल्लेखनीय योगदान

जैसवाल जाति में अनेक राजा, राजश्रेष्ठी, महामात्य और राजमान्य महापुरुष हो गये है। सवत् 1190 मे जैसवाल वंशी साहू नेमिचन्द ने कवि श्रीघर से वर्धमान चरित की रचना कराई थी। जैसवाल कवि माणिक्यराज ने अरसेन चरित एव नागकुमार चरित की रचना की थी। तोमर वंशी राजा वीरमदेव के महामात्य जैसवाल कुशराज ने ग्वालियर में चन्द्रप्रभ का मन्दिर बनवाया था। सवत् 1475 में एक यन्त्र की प्रतिष्ठा करवाई थी जो प्राजकल नरवर के मन्दिर में विराजमान है। जैसवाल कुलोत्पन्न कविवर लक्ष्मणदेव ने संवत् 1275 में जिणयत्त चरिउ की रचना की थी। संवत् 1354 में जैसवाल कुलोत्पन्न देल्ह कवि ने जिनदत्त चरित की रचना समाप्त की थी। ( ref. जिणदत्त चरित-सम्पादक डा. माताप्रसाद गुप्त)

Notable Contributions

The Jaiswal community has produced numerous notable figures, including kings, royal ministers, merchants, and scholars.

Prominent Achievements:

  • 1190 CE: Jaiswal leader Sahu Nemichand commissioned poet Shridhar to compose the Vardhaman Charit.
  • Manikyaraj, a Jaiswal poet, authored works such as Arsen Charit and Nagkumar Charit.
  • Kushraj, a royal minister of the Tomar dynasty, built a temple dedicated to Chandraprabha in Gwalior and performed a ritual installation of a Jain yantra in 1475 CE.
  • Poet Lakshmandeva, in 1275 CE, wrote the Jinayatta Charit.
  • Poet Delh, a Jaiswal, completed the Jinadatta Charit in 1354 CE. (Reference: Jinadatta Charit, Editor: Dr. Mataprasad Gupta)

बघेरवाल दिगम्बर जैन जाति

बघेरवाल जाति राजस्थान की एक प्रमुख दिगम्बर जैन जाति है। प्रदेश के कोटा, बूंदी एवं टोक जिले बघेरवाल समाज के प्रमुख केन्द्र है। राजस्थान के अतिरिक्त महाराष्ट्र में भी बधेरवाल जाति अच्छी संख्या मे मिलती है।

The Bagherwal Jain community is a significant Digambar Jain sect, primarily centered in Rajasthan, with key hubs in the districts of Kota, Bundi, and Tonk. Outside Rajasthan, a considerable number of Bagherwals are also found in Maharashtra.

ऐतिहासिक उत्पत्ति

बधेरवाल जाति की उत्पत्ति संवत् 101 में टोक जिले के बघेरा गाव से मानी जाती है। कृष्णदत्त संवत् 1746 में रचित बघेरवालरास मे उक्त मन की पुष्टि की है-

आदि बधेरे ऊपनो निश्चल उत्पत्ति नाम । बड कुल जस तिण वृणीए, बघेरवाल वरियाम ।।7।।

बघेरा राजस्थान में केकड़ी से लगभग 16 कि० मी० दूरी पर स्थित है । वर्तमान में वहां बघेरवालो का एक भी परिवार नहीं रहता। लेकिन बघेरवाल बन्धु अपनी पैतृक भूमि के दर्शन करने जब कभी अवश्य आते रहते है।

Historical Origin

The origin of the Bagherwal community is traced back to Baghera, a village in the Tonk district of Rajasthan, around 101 CE. This is supported by references in the Bagherwal Ras, written in 1746 CE by Krishna Datt, which states:

“Adi Baghere oopano, nichal utpatti naam,
Bad kul jas tin vrinye, Bagherwal variyam.”

Baghera is located approximately 16 km from Kekri in Rajasthan. While no Bagherwal families currently reside there, members often visit the site to reconnect with their ancestral roots.

बघेरा में दिगम्बर जैन मंदिर

यहा दो दिगम्बर जैन मन्दिर है जिनमे शातिनाथ स्वामी के मन्दिर में 11 वी में 13वी शताब्दी की अनेक जिन प्रतिमाये है जिनमे शानिनाथ की मूति अत्यधिक मनोहर, प्राचीन एवं कलापूर्ण है। यहा खुदाई मे अनेक मूतिया प्राप्त होती रहती है जिसमे पता चलता है कि बघेरा कभी वैभवशाली विशाल नगर था तथा दिगम्बर जैन समाज यहा अच्छी सख्या में रहता था। शातिनाथ स्वामी का मन्दिर अतिशय क्षेत्र के रूप में विख्यात है जिनके दर्शनार्थ जैन, अजैन सभी आते है। शानिनाथ स्वामी की प्रतिमा लगभग 9 फीट ऊँची है जो भूगर्भ से प्राप्त हुई थी। जिसके लेख से पता चलता है कि सवत् 1254 में इसकी प्रतिष्ठा सम्पन्न हुई थी। इस मन्दिर के निर्माण का बिजोलिया के शिलालेख में उल्लेख आता है कि प्राग्वाट वश के वैश्रवण श्रेष्ठि ने व्याघेरक आदि स्थानो मे मन्दिरो का निर्माण करवाया था। यह शिलालेख संवत् 1226 का है। शिलालेख के अनुसार वैश्रवण श्रेष्ठि कोणार्क से 8 पीढी पूर्व हुआ था। यदि 25 वर्ष की एक पीढी मानी जावे तो वैश्रवण श्रेष्ठि 10वीं शताब्दी मे होना चाहिये और उसी समय बघेरा मे मन्दिर का निर्माण होना चाहिये । बघेरा ग्राम मे जितनी भी मूतिया निकली है वे सभी 12वी शताब्दी की है। ( Reference त्रिषष्टि स्मृति शास्त्र )

Jain Temples in Baghera

  • Baghera is home to two Digambar Jain temples, including one dedicated to Shantinath Swami, featuring idols from the 11th to 13th centuries.
  • The Shantinath idol, approximately 9 feet tall, was excavated and consecrated in 1254 CE, as per inscriptions. This idol and the site are renowned for their spiritual significance, attracting Jain and non-Jain devotees alike.
  • Historical inscriptions, such as the Bijolia inscription of 1226 CE, mention the construction of temples in Baghera by Vaishravana Shreshthi, a notable merchant of the Pragwat lineage.
  • Excavations in Baghera have uncovered numerous idols dating back to the 12th century, indicating that the area was once a flourishing Jain center.

52 गोत्र

बघेरवाल जाति के 52 गोत्र माने गये हैं जिनका वर्णन भी उक्त रास में किया गया है।

बाबन गोत उद्योतवर, अवनि हुआ अवतार । विवधि तास जस विस्तरों, ए करणो अधिकार ।।8।।

इन गोत्रो के नाम निम्न प्रकार हैं-

खडवड़, लाबाबांस, साखूव्या, धानोत्या, समधरा, वावर्या, सीधड़तोड़, बागट्‌या, हरसोरा, साहुला, कोरिया, भंडार्या, कटार्या, बनावड्या, ठौल्या, पगास्या, बोरखड्या, दोवड्या, बडमूडी, तातहडस्या, मंडाया, बदलचढ, पीतल्या, दोगोर्या, भूरया, दहलोडा, निठाणीवाल, मथुर्या, जोग्या, अभैपुर्या, निगोत्या, कावरिया, टाहिया, कुचाल्या, माहुलिया, मुहीवाल, साखूण्या, सरवाड्या, पापल्या, डूंगरवाल, ठग, वहरिसा, सेठिया, चमार्या, सांभर्या, सुरलाया, घोटापा, सीलौर्या, सवुण्या, गवाल, केतग्या, खरड्या ।

बघरवालो के ठोल्या, साखूण्या, पीतल्या, निगोत्या, पापल्या, कटार्या जैसे गोत्र खण्डेलवाल जैनो के गोत्रो से मिलते जुलते हैं।

इन गोत्रो में 25 गोत्र काष्ठासंघ के एवं शेष 27 गोत्र मूलसंधी माने जाते है।

Gotras (Lineages)

The Bagherwal community recognizes 52 gotras, which are listed in the Bagherwal Ras:

“Baban gotra udyotvar, avani hua avatar,
Vivadhi taas jas vistaron, ae karano adhikar.”

Interestingly, several Bagherwal gotras, such as Tholya, Sakhuvya, Pitlya, and Katarya, resemble those of the Khandelwal Jain community.

The 52 gotras are further divided:

  • 25 belong to the Kashtha Sangha.
  • 27 belong to the Mulasangha.

सांस्कृतिक और धार्मिक योगदान

चित्तौड किले पर जैन कीति स्तम्भ साह जीजा द्वारा बनवाया गया था। वे बघेरवाल जाति के श्रावक थे। नैनवा, कोटा, बूंदी में बघेरवालों के विशाल मन्दिर बने हुये है। चादखैडी क्षेत्र की स्थापना, मन्दिर का निर्माण एवं संवत् 1746 मे विशाल पंच कल्याणक प्रतिष्ठा महोत्सव किशनदास बघेरवाल द्वारा किया गया था।

Cultural and Religious Contributions

  • Jain Kirti Stambh at Chittorgarh Fort was constructed by Sahu Jija, a Bagherwal Jain devotee.
  • Notable temples built by the Bagherwal community are found in Nainwa, Kota, and Bundi.
  • In 1746 CE, Kishandas Bagherwal established the Chadkhedi Jain temple and conducted a grand Panch Kalyanak Mahotsav.

परवार दिगम्बर जैन जाति

दिगम्बर जैन परवार समाज का प्रमुख केन्द्र मध्यप्रदेश के सागर, जबलपुर, ललितपुर जिले माने जाते है। इस समाज के श्रावक एव श्राविकाये घर्मनिष्ठ, आचार-व्यवहार में दृढ देखी जाती है तथा ये प्राचीन परम्परा के अनुयायी है।

The Parwar Jain community is a prominent Digambar Jain sect primarily centered in the districts of Sagar, Jabalpur, and Lalitpur in Madhya Pradesh. Known for their deep faith, discipline, and adherence to ancient traditions, the Parwar Jains have a rich historical and cultural legacy.


ऐतिहासिक उल्लेख एवं उत्पत्ति

परवार जाति का उल्लेख पौरपट्टान्वय के रूप में मूतिलेखो एव प्रशस्तियो मे मिलता है । लेकिन इस जाति के उत्पत्ति स्थान के सम्बन्ध मे अभी तक कोई निश्चित ग्राम / नगर का नाम नहीं मिलता । पट्टावलियो मे परवार जाति का उल्लेख विक्रम संवत् 26 से मिलता है और मुनि गुप्तिगुप्त इस जाति मे उत्पन्न हुये थे ऐसा भी उल्लेख

उक्त पट्टावली में मिलता है। इसके पश्चात् सं. 40 में सं. 765 में होने वाले पट्टाधीश एव सं. 1256, 1264 श्राचार्य मी परवार जाति मे उत्पन्न हुये थे। (पं. फूलचन्द शास्त्री अभिनन्दन ग्रंथ)

  • However, no definitive town or village has been identified as their place of origin.
  • The Jain Pattavalis (genealogical records of Jain acharyas) mention the Parwar community as early as 26 CE, stating that Muni Guptigupt was born in this community.
  • Later, notable monks and scholars, including those in 40 CE, 765 CE, and 1256 CE, also belonged to the Parwar community, as recorded in Jain historical texts (e.g., Pt. Phoolchand Shastri Abhinandan Granth).

शब्दावली और विकास

फूलचन्द शास्त्री के मतानुसार परवार जाति को प्राचीन काल में प्रग्वाट नाम मे अभिहित किया जाता रहा है। लेकिन ब्रह्म जिनदास ने “जौरासी जाति जयमाल” मे पोरवाड़ शब्द से परवार जाति का उल्लेख किया है। अपभ्रश ग्रन्थों मे परवार को पुरवाडा शब्द से अभिहित किया गया है। महाकवि घनपाल का बाहुबलि चरिउ, रहधू कवि का श्रीपाल सिद्धचक्र चरिउ, आचार्य श्रुतकीति का हरिवंशपुराण एव प. श्रीधर का सुकुमाल चरिउ की ग्रन्थ प्रशस्तियो में पुरवाड शब्द का ही प्रयोग किया गया है।

Terminology and Evolution

  • According to Phoolchand Shastri, the Parwar community was historically referred to as Pragwat.
  • In Brahma Jinadas’ “Jaurasi Jati Jayamal”, the term Porwad is used to describe the Parwar community.
  • In Apabhramsa literature, the community is mentioned as Purwada.
  • Renowned Jain texts, such as Bahubali Charit by poet Ghanpal, Shripal Siddhachakra Charit by Rahdhu, and Sukumal Charit by Pandit Shridhar, also use variations of the term Purwad.

उप विभाजन

लेकिन श्रावको की 72 जातियो वाली एक पाण्डुलिपि में अष्टसखा पोरवाड, दुसखा पोरवाड, चोसखा पोरवाड, जांगडा पोरवाड प‌द्मावती परवार सोरठिया पोरवाड नामो के साथ परवार नाम को भी गिनाया है। ऐसा लगता है कि परवार जाति भेद एव प्रभेदो मे इतनी बट गई थी कि इनमे परस्पर में रोटी व्यवहार एवं बेटी व्यवहार भी बन्द हो गया था। चोसखा समाज वर्तमान में तारणपंथी समाज के नाम से जाना जाता है।

Subdivisions

  • A manuscript listing 72 Jain castes mentions multiple variations of the Parwar community, such as:
    • Ashtasakha Porwad
    • Dusakha Porwad

    • Jangda Porwad
    • Padmavati Parwar
    • Sorathia Porwad
  • The Chosakha community later became known as the Taranpanthi sect.

परवारों की सात खापें

कविवर बस्तराम साह ने अपने बुद्धि विलास में परवार जाति के सात खापो का उल्लेख किया है।

सात खांप परवार कहार्य, तिनके तुमको नाम सुनावे ।।686।। अठखा फुनि है चौसखा, सेहरटा फुनि है दो सखा ।

सोराठिया ग्ररु गांगड जानौ, पद्माबत्यो सप्तमा मानो ।।687 ।।

Seven Khap of Parwars

In his book Buddhi Vilas, Kavi Bastram Sah describes seven major branches (Khap) of the Parwar community:

बारह गोत्र (वंश)

पौरपट्ट धन्वय मे जो 12 गौत्र सुप्रसिद्ध है उनके नाम निम्न प्रकार है-

गोइल्ल, वाछल्ल, ड्याडिम्म, वाभल्ल, कासिल्ल, कोइल्ल, लोइच्छ, कोछल्ल, भारिल्ल, माडिल्ल, गोहिल्ल और फागुल्ल । प्रत्येक गोत्र के अन्तर्गत 12: 12 मूल गिनाये गये है जो सम्भवतः ग्रामो के नाम पर बने हुये है।

सांस्कृतिक एवं साहित्यिक योगदान

परवार जाति में अनेक विद्वान एव मट्टारक हो गये है। संवत् 1371 मे कवि देल्ह ने चौबीसी गीत लिखा था। कवि का जन्म परवार जाति में हुआ था। वी शताब्दी मे पौरफ्ट्टान्वयी महिचन्द साधु की प्रेरणा में महा पं. भाशाघर ने सागार धर्मामृत ग्रन्थ एवं उसकी टीका लिखी थी।

Cultural and Literary Contributions

The Parwar community has produced numerous scholars, poets, and monks.

  • In 1371 CE, poet Delh composed the Chaubisi Geet.
  • In the 5th century, Mahichand Sadhu, inspired by the Parwar lineage, encouraged Pandit Bhashaghar to write the Sagaar Dharmamrit Granth and its commentary.

Outside Rajasthan, a considerable number of Bagherwals are also found in Maharashtra. The Bagherwal community is spread across India, with their population estimated at over 1 lakh.

जैसवाल दिगम्बर जैन

17 वी शताब्दी के कवि बुलाखीचन्द जैसवाल जाति के थे। उन्होंने अपने वचन कोष (सवत् 1737) में जैसवाल जाति की उत्पत्ति जैसलमेर नगर से मानी है।

The Jaiswal Jain community is a prominent sect of Digambar Jains, with historical and cultural roots tracing back to Jaisalmer. The 17th-century poet Bulakhichand, a member of this community, affirmed in his work Vachan Kosh (1737 CE) that the Jaiswals originated from Jaisalmer.

पल्लीवाल दिगम्बर जैन

पल्लीवाल प्रारम्भ मे दिगम्बर जैन जाति थी लेकिन विगत 300-400 वर्षों से इस जाति मे कुछ परिवार श्वेताम्बर धर्म मानने वाले मी हो गये । लेकिन वर्तमान मे भी यह जाति मुख्यत. दिगम्बर धर्मानुयायी ही है। वर्तमान में पल्लीवाल घागरा, फिरोजाबाद, कन्नोज, अलीगढ क्षेत्र एव ग्वालियर, उज्जैन श्रादि नगरी में मिलते है।

The Palliwal Jain community, originally a Digambar Jain sect, has seen some families transition to the Shwetambar tradition over the past 300–400 years. However, the majority of the Palliwal community still remains staunch followers of the Digambar Jain tradition.

The Lamechu Jain community historically known in inscriptions and literary records as the “Lambakanchukanvaya.” In many inscriptions, this community is also described as “Yaduvanshi,” indicating its origins as a Kshatriya lineage.

हुंबड दिगम्बर जैन

यह जाति विनयसेन आचार्य के शिष्य कुमारसेन द्वारा सवत् 800 के अनुमानतः बागड देश में स्थापिन की गई थी। यह जानि सम्पन्न और वैभवशालिनी रही है।

The Humbad (Humad) established around 800 CE in the Bagad region by Kumarsen, a disciple of Acharya Vinaysen. Over centuries, this community has maintained a reputation for its wealth, influence, and religious devotion.

The various communities within the Digambar Jain society have played a crucial role in the growth and sustenance of Jainism over centuries. Each community, while maintaining its distinct identity, shares the common goal of promoting Jain values of non-violence, truth, and spirituality. Through their contributions in fields such as literature, education, temple construction, and philanthropy, these communities have enriched the cultural and religious heritage of Jainism.

उत्तर भारत में अग्रवाल जैन जाति अत्यधिक प्रसिद्ध, समृद्ध एव विशाल मख्या वाली जाति मानी जाती है। हरियाणा, राजस्थान उत्तरप्रदेश, मध्य प्रदेश, दहनी जैसे प्रदेश अग्रवाल दिगम्बर जैनो के प्रमुख केन्द्र है। जैनधर्म, साहित्य एव सस्कृति के विकास में अग्रवाल जैनो का प्रमुख योगदान रहा है।

The Agrawal Digambar Jain community is one of the most renowned, prosperous, and widespread communities in North India. States such as Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi are prominent centers for the Agrawal Digambar Jains. The community has made significant contributions to the development of Jainism, literature, and culture.

अग्रवाल जाति जैन एवं वैष्णव दोनो धर्मों में बटी हुई है तथा उन दोनो में सामाजिक सम्बन्ध मी प्रगाढ बने हुये है। लेकिन अग्रवाल जैन समाज धर्म और संस्कृति के परिपालन में अन्य किसी जैन जाति से पीछे नही है। मन्दिर निर्माण करवाने, साहित्य को सरक्षण देते, माधु जीवन अपनाने अथवा उनकी सेवा सुश्रुषा में, तीर्थों की रक्षा जैसे कार्यों में वह सदैव भागे रही है।

The Agrawal community is divided into two religious groups: Jain and Vaishnav. Despite this division, both maintain strong social bonds. However, the Agrawal Jain community is not behind any other Jain group when it comes to preserving and promoting religion and culture. Whether it is constructing temples, preserving literature, adopting ascetic practices, supporting monks, or protecting pilgrimage sites, the Agrawal Jains have always played an active role.

Origin of the Agrawal Community

अग्रवाल जाति की उत्पत्ति अग्रोहा से मानी जाती है। 14वी शताब्दी में होने वाले सधारू कवि ने भी उक्त मन्तव्य का ही समर्थन किया है। ( अगरवाल की मेरी जात, पुर अगरोए महि उतपाप्ति (694) प्रथम्न चरित-रचनाकाल सं. 1411.)

The origin of the Agrawal community is traced back to Agroha, a historic town located in Hisar, Haryana. In the 14th century, poet Sadharu supported this view:
“Agrawal is my caste, born in the land of Agroha.”
(Prathman Charit, written in Samvat 1411).

अग्रोहा हरियाणा प्रदेश के हिसार प्रान्त मे स्थित है। प्राचीन काल में यह एक ऐतिहासिक नगर था । सन् 1939-40 मे जब यहाँ के एक टीले की खुदाई हुई तो उसमे ताम्बे के सिक्को पर अंकित कर्ण, गज, वृषभ, मीन, सिह, चैत्य वृक्ष आदि के जो चिह्न प्राप्त हुये है उनको जैन मान्यता की ओर स्पष्ट संकेत माना जाना चाहिये । सिक्कों के पीछे ब्राह्मी अक्षरों में प्रगोद के अगच जनपदस अंकित है जिसका अर्थ अग्रोदक में अगद जनपद का सिक्का होता है। अग्रोहे का नाम अग्रोदक मी रहा है। एपिग्राफिया इंडिका जिल्द 2 पृष्ठ 244 और The Indian Antiquary म.ग 15 पृष्ठ 343 पर अग्रोहक वैश्यों का वर्णन किया हुआ है।

In ancient times, Agroha was a significant historical town. During excavations in 1939-40, copper coins bearing symbols like ears of corn, elephants, bulls, fish, lions, and Chaitya trees were discovered, which are believed to be linked to Jainism. The coins also had inscriptions in Brahmi script that read “Pragodka Agad Janapadas,” meaning coins of the Agad district in Agroha. The description of Agroha Vaishyas is documented in Epigraphia Indica, Volume 2, Page 244, and The Indian Antiquary, Volume 15, Page 343.

जनश्रुति के अनुसार अग्रोहा में अग्रसेन राजा राज्य करता था इसी से अग्रवाल जाति का उद्भव हुआ लेकिन इसके अभी तक कोई प्रमाण नही मिल सके है। कविवर वुलाखीचन्द ने अग्रवाल जाति की उत्पत्ति अगर ऋषि द्वारा मानी है।’ तथा लोहाचार्य द्वारा अग्रवालो को जैनधर्म में दीक्षित करना माना है। अग्रवालो के 18 गोत्र रहे है जिनके नाम निम्न प्रकार हैं:

According to tradition, King Agrasen ruled Agroha, giving rise to the Agrawal community. However, no concrete evidence of this has been found. Poet Vallabhachand attributed the origin of the Agrawal community to Agar Rishi, while others believe they were initiated into Jainism by Lohacharya. The Agrawal community has traditionally consisted of 18 Gotras (lineages):

गर्ग, गोयल, सिंघल, मु’गिल, तायल, तरल, कमल, वछिल, एरन, ढालण, चिन्तल, मित्तल, हिवल, किधल, हरहा, कछिल, पुखन्या ।

Gotras: Garg, Goyal, Singhal, Mungil, Tayal, Taral, Kamal, Vachhil, Airan, Dhalan, Chintal, Mittal, Hiwal, Kidhal, Harha, Kachhil, Pukhanya.

ऐतिहासिक योगदान

मट्टारक पट्टावली के अनुसार वि. स. 565 में मुनि रत्नकीति हुये जो अग्रवाल जाति के थे। देहली के तोमर वशीय शासक अनगपाल के शासन काल में रचित पासणाहचरिउ के कवि श्रीधर स्वय अग्रवाल जेन थे तथा अपने लिये “अयरवाल कुल सभवेन” लिखा है। पासणाहरिउको लिखा ने वाले नट्टलसाहु स्वय जैन अग्रवाल थे । अलीगढ़ प्रदेश के निवासी माहू पारस के पुत्र टोडर अग्रवाल ने मधुरा में 514 स्तूपो का निर्माण करवाकर प्रतिष्ठा करवाई थी। साहू पांडे राजकमल ने सवत् 1642 में जम्बूस्वामी चरित का निर्माण किया था। अपभ्रण के महान् कवि रद्दधू के आश्रय दाता एव ग्रंथ निर्माता अधिकाश अग्रवाल श्रावक थे। आदित्यवार कथा के रचयिता भाउ कवि स्वयं अग्रवाल जैन थे। राजस्थान के जैन ग्रथ भण्डारो मे अग्रवाल श्रावकों द्वारा लिखवायी हुई हजारो पाण्डुलिपियाँ सग्रहित है ।

Historical Contributions

  1. Monks and Scholars:
    • In Vikram Samvat 565, monk Ratnakirti, a member of the Agrawal community, attained prominence.
    • During the reign of Delhi’s Tomar ruler Anangpal, Shridhar, the author of Parshvanath Charit, identified himself as “Ayarwal Kul Sambhavan” (born into the Agrawal lineage).
    • Nattal Sahu, who composed Parshvanath Charit, was also an Agrawal Jain.
  2. Temple Builders:
    • Mahu Paras’ son Todar Agrawal built and consecrated 514 stupas in Mathura.
    • Sahu Pandey Rajkamal authored the Jambuswami Charit in Samvat 1642.
  3. Patrons of Literature:
    • Many patrons of great Apabhramsa poets like Raddhu were Agrawal Jain laypersons.
    • Poet Bhau, the author of Adityavar Katha, was himself an Agrawal Jain.
    • Thousands of manuscripts written or sponsored by Agrawal Jains are preserved in Jain libraries across Rajasthan.
  4. Temple Construction:
    • The Agrawal Jain community contributed significantly to the construction of temples and statues.
    • Many exquisite statues in the Gwalior Fort were commissioned by Agrawal Jains.
    • Delhi’s Raja Harsukhrai Sugan Chand built numerous Jain temples in the capital city.


वर्तमान परिदृश्य

मन्दिरो एव मूर्तियों के निर्माण में भी अग्रवाल जैन समाज का महत्त्वपूर्ण योगदान है। ग्वालियर किले की अनेक सुन्दर मूतियो का निर्माण अग्रवाल जैनों ने कराया था। दिल्ली के राजा हरसुखराय सुगनचन्द ने देहली में अनेक जिन मन्दिरों का निर्माण कराया था। इस प्रकार अग्रवाल जैन समाज दिगम्बर जैन समाज का प्रमुख अग है जो वर्तमान में देश के प्रत्येक भाग मे बसा हुआ है। देश में अग्रवाल जैन समाज की 10 लाख से भी अधिक सख्या मानी जाती है।

Today, the Agrawal Digambar Jain community remains an integral part of the Digambar Jain tradition. The community has a population exceeding one million and is spread across every part of the country. Through their enduring commitment to religion, culture, and societal development, the Agrawal Jains continue to uphold their rich heritage and legacy

Bakhtaram Sah listed the names of 84 castes, but among them, 49 castes are neither included in Brahm Jindas’s list nor in Vinodilal’s.

अतः उक्त डिरेक्टरी में प्रकाशित संख्या 450584 थी। किन्तु पिछले 100 वर्षों में जिस तरह देश की जन सख्या में वृद्धि हुई है तथा जैन समाज की जनगणना में जो उपेक्षा की जाती है उसके आधार पर प्रत्येक जाति की संख्या 12 गुनी होने का अनुमान है। इस प्रकार पूरे दिगम्बर जैन समाज की सख्या 54 लाख से भी अधिक आकी जाती है जो सही प्रतीत होती है ।

Thus, the published figure in the said directory was 4,50,584. However, considering the population growth in the country over the past 100 years and the neglect often observed in the census of the Jain community, it is estimated that the population of each caste has increased Twelvefold. Based on this, the total population of the Digambar Jain community is estimated to exceed 5.4 million, which seems accurate.
