श्लोक 126 से 135 अधिकारों का विस्तार

पुराण के 63 अधिकार हैं। अवांतर अधिकार अमर्यादित हैं। कुछ आचार्य 24 तीर्थंकरों के पुराण मानते हैं। ये वृषभनाथ से महावीर तक हैं। यह समूह महापुराण है। अवसर्पिणी युग के अंत में यह अल्प होगा।

श्लोक ( Shlok )126

षष्ट्यत्रयवः सोऽयं पुराणस्कन्ध इष्यतै । अवान्तराधिकाराणामपर्यन्तोऽत्र विस्तरः ॥१२६॥

 इस पुराण स्कंध के तिरसठ अधिकार व अवयव अवश्य हैं परंतु इसके अवांतर अधिकारों का विस्तार अमर्यादित है ।।126।। 

“This ancient scripture has sixty-three primary rights and components, but the extent of its secondary rights is boundless.” (126)

श्लोक ( Shlok )127-133

तीर्थ कर्तृपुराणेषु शेषाणामपि संग्रहात् । चतुर्विंशतिरेवात्र पुराणानीति केचन ॥१२७॥

पुराणं वृषमस्थाचं द्वितीयमजितेशिनः । तृतीयं संभवस्येष्टं चतुर्थमभिनन्दमे ॥ १२८॥

पञ्चमं सुमतेः प्रोक्तं षष्ठं पद्मप्रभस्य च । सप्तमं स्यात्सुपार्श्वस्य चन्द्रमासोऽष्टमं स्मृतम् ॥१२९॥

नवमं पुष्पदन्तस्थ वृशमं शीतलेशिनः । श्रायसं च परं तस्माद् द्वादशं वासुपूज्यगम् ॥१३०॥

त्रयोदशं च विमले ततोऽनन्तजितः परम् । जिने पञ्चदशं धर्म शान्तेः षोडश्चमीशितुः ॥१३१॥

कुन्थोः सप्तदशं ज्ञरस्याष्टादशं मतम् । मल्लेरेकोनविंशं स्याद् विशं च मुनिसुव्रते ॥१३२।।

 एकविंशं नमेर्मर्तुर्नमेोर्विशमर्हतः । पार्श्वशस्य त्रयोविंशं चतुविंशं च सन्मतेः ॥१३३॥

कोई-कोई आचार्य ऐसा भी कहते हैं कि तीर्थंकरों के पुराणों में चक्रवर्ती आदि के पुराणों का भी संग्रह हो जाता है इसलिए चौबीस हो पुराण समझना चाहिए । जो कि इस प्रकार हैं―पहला पुराण वृषभनाथ का, दूसरा अजितनाथ का, तीसरा संभवनाथ का, चौथा अभिनंदननाथ का, पाँचवाँ सुमतिनाथ का, छठा पद्मप्रभ का, सातवां सुपार्श्वनाथ का, आठवाँ चंद्रप्रभ का, नौवाँ पुष्पदंत का, दसवाँ शीतलनाथ का, ग्यारहवाँ श्रेयान्सनाथ का, बारहवाँ वासुपूज्य का, तेरहवाँ विमलनाथ का, चौदहवाँ अनंतनाथ का, पंद्रहवाँ धर्मनाथ का, सोलहवां शांतिनाथ का, सत्रहवाँ कुंथुनाथ का, अठारहवाँ अरनाथ का, उन्नीसवाँ मल्लिनाथ का, बीसवाँ मुनिसुव्रतनाथ का, इकीसवाँ नमिनाथ का, बाईसवां नेमिनाथ का, तेईसवाँ पार्श्वनाथ का और चौबीस वाँ सन्मति―महावीर स्वामी का ।।127-133।।

“Some scholars also say that in the scriptures of the Tirthankaras, the texts of Chakravartins and others are also included, so it should be considered that there are twenty-four scriptures. These are as follows: The first scripture is of Vrishabhānath, the second of Ajitnāth, the third of Sambhavnāth, the fourth of Abhinandanāth, the fifth of Sumatināth, the sixth of Padmaprabh, the seventh of Supārshvnāth, the eighth of Chandraprabh, the ninth of Pushpadant, the tenth of Shītanāth, the eleventh of Shreyānsvnāth, the twelfth of Vāsupujya, the thirteenth of Vimalnāth, the fourteenth of Anantnāth, the fifteenth of Dharmnāth, the sixteenth of Shāntināth, the seventeenth of Kunthunāth, the eighteenth of Arnāth, the nineteenth of Mallināth, the twentieth of Munisuvratnāth, the twenty-first of Namināth, the twenty-second of Nemīnāth, the twenty-third of Pārshvnāth, and the twenty-fourth of Sanmati—Mahāvīr Swāmī.” (127-133)

श्लोक ( Shlok )134

पुराणान्येवमेतानि चतुविंशतिरर्हताम् । महापुराणमेतेषां समूहः परिभाष्यते ॥१३४।।

इस प्रकार चौबीस तीर्थंकरों के ये चौबीस पुराण हैं इनका जो समूह है वही महापुराण कहलाता है ।।134।। 

“Thus, these twenty-four scriptures of the twenty-four Tirthankaras form a collective, which is called the Mahāpurāṇa.” (134)

श्लोक ( Shlok )135

 पुराणं महदद्यत्वे यदस्माभिरनुस्मृतम् । “पुरा युगान्ते तन्नूनं कियदप्यवशिष्यते ॥१३५॥

आज मैंने जिस महापुराण का वर्णन किया है वह इस अवसर्पिणी युग के अंत में निश्चय से बहुत ही अल्प रह जायेगा ।।135।।

“The Mahāpurāṇa that I have described today will certainly remain very limited at the end of this Avsarpini (degenerating) age.” (135)

श्लोक 106 से 115 ग्रंथ का प्रमाण

नाम उपक्रम प्रथमानुयोग का पहला भाग है। ग्रंथ-विस्तार के भय से प्रमाण बताया गया। प्रथमानुयोग शब्दों से परिमेय है। इसमें 2554423107500 अनुष्टुप् श्लोक हैं। पदों की संख्या 5000 और अक्षर 16348307888 हैं। यह द्रव्यश्रुत का प्रमाण है। द्वादशांग इसका अभिधेय है।

श्लोक ( Shlok )106

श्रुतस्कन्धानुयोगानां चतुर्णां प्रथमो मतः । ततोऽनुयोगं प्रथमं प्राहुरन्वर्थसंज्ञया ।।१०६।।

 ग्रंथ के नाम कहने को नाम उपक्रम कहते हैं यह प्रथमानुयोग, श्रुतस्कंध के चारों अनुयोगों में सबसे पहला है इसलिए इसका प्रथमानुयोग यह नाम सार्थक गिना जाता है ।।106।।

“The mentioning of the name of the scripture is called the ‘name designation.’ This is the first among the four sections of the ‘Shrutaskandha’ and is considered the most significant; therefore, it is regarded as the ‘Prathamanu Yog’ (First section), and its name is considered meaningful.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )107

प्रमाणामधुना तस्य वक्ष्यते ग्रन्थतोऽर्थतः । ग्रन्थगौरवभीरूणां श्रोत णामनुरोधतः ।।१०७।।

ग्रंथ-विस्तार के भय से डरने वाले श्रोताओं के अनुरोध से अब इस ग्रंथ का प्रमाण बतलाता हूँ । वह प्रमाण अक्षरों की संख्या तथा अथ इन दोनों की अपेक्षा बतलाया जायेगा ।।107।। 

“Out of concern for the fear of the scripture’s length, at the request of the listeners, I will now present the proof of this scripture. This proof will be explained in terms of the number of letters and its meaning.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )108

सोऽर्थतोऽपरिमेयोऽपि संख्येयः शब्दतो मतः । कृत्स्नस्य वाङ्मयस्यास्य संख्येयस्वानतिक्रमात् ॥१०८।

यद्यपि यह प्रथमानुयोगरूप ग्रंथ अर्थ की अपेक्षा अपरिमेय है―संख्या से रहित है तथापि शब्दों की अपेक्षा परिमेय है―संख्येय है तब उसका एक अंश प्रथमानुयोग असंख्येय कैसे हो सकता है ।।108।।

“Although this scripture, in its form as the ‘Prathamanu Yog,’ is immeasurable in terms of its meaning and beyond count, it is measurable in terms of words—countable. Therefore, how can its part, the ‘Prathamanu Yog,’ be considered immeasurable?”

श्लोक ( Shlok )109-110

 देलक्षे पञ्चपञ्चाशत्सहस्राणि चतुः शतम् । चत्वारिंशत्तथा द्वे च कोव्योऽस्मिन् ग्रन्थसंख्यया ।।१०९।।

एकत्रिंशच्च लक्षाः स्युः शतानां पञ्चसप्ततिः । ग्रन्थसंख्या च विज्ञेया श्लोकेनानुष्टुमेन हि ।।११०।।

 32 अक्षरों के अनुष्टुप् श्लोकों के द्वारा गणना करने पर प्रथमानुयोग में दो लाख करोड़, पचपन हजार करोड़, चार सौ बयालीस करोड़ और इकतीस लाख सात हजार पाँच सौ (2554423107500) श्लोक होते हैं ।। 109-110।।

“By calculating with 32-letter Anushtubh verses, the ‘Prathamanu Yog’ contains two trillion, five hundred fifty-four billion, four hundred twenty-three million, one hundred seventy-five thousand, and five hundred (2,554,423,107,500) verses.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )111-113

अन्धप्रमाणनिश्चित्यै पदसंख्योपवण्यते । पञ्चैवेह सहस्त्राणि पदानां गणना मता ।॥१११

शतानि षोडशैव स्युश्चतुस्त्रिशष्त कोटयः । व्यशीतिलक्षाः सप्तैय सहस्त्राणि शताष्टकम् ।।११२।।

अष्टाशीतिश्च वर्णाः स्युः संहिता मध्यमं पदम् । पदेनैतेन मीयन्ते पूर्वाङ्गअन्धविस्तराः ॥११३॥

इस प्रकार ग्रंथप्रमाण का निश्चय कर अब उसके पदों की संख्या का वर्णन करते हैं । प्रथमानुयोग ग्रंथ के पदों की गणना पाँच हजार मानी गयी है और सोलह सौ चौंतीस करोड़ तिरासी लाख सात हजार आठ सौ अठासी ( 16348307888) अक्षरों का एक मध्यम पद होता है । इस मध्यमपद के द्वारा ही ग्यारह अंग तथा चौदह पूर्वों की ग्रंथ संख्या का वर्णन किया जाता है ।।111-113।। 

“Thus, having established the proof of the scripture, we now describe the number of its verses. The verses of the ‘Prathamanu Yog’ scripture are considered to be five thousand in number, and one medium verse contains one billion, six hundred thirty-four million, eight hundred thirty million, seven thousand eight hundred eighty-eight (1,634,830,788,888) letters. It is through this medium verse that the total number of sections in the scripture—eleven parts and fourteen chapters—are described.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )114

 दृश्यप्रमाणमित्युक्तं भावतस्तु श्रुताव्हयम् । प्रमाणमत्रियं गदि परम र्षिप्रणेतृकम् ॥११४॥

यह जो ऊपर प्रमाण बतलाया है सो द्रव्यश्रुत का ही है, भावयुक्त का नहीं है । वह भाव की अपेक्षा श्रुतज्ञान रूप है जो कि सत्यार्थ, विरोधरहित और केवलिप्रणीत हैं ।।114।। 

“The proof provided above pertains to the material scripture (Dravya Shrut), not the one with meaning (Bhav Yukt). The latter is related to the knowledge of the truth, which is devoid of contradiction and is solely based on established principles.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )115

 पुराणस्वाक्ष्य वक्तव्यं कृत्स्नं वाङ्मयमिष्यते । यतो नास्मा बहिर्भूतमस्ति वस्तु वचोऽपि वा ॥११५॥

संपूर्ण द्वादशांग ही इस पुराण का अभिधेय विषय है क्योंकि इसके बाहर न तो कोई विषय ही है और न शब्द ही है ।।115।। 

“The entire twelve parts (Dwadashang) are the primary subjects of this Purana, as there is neither any topic nor any word beyond them.”

श्लोक 116 से 125 पुराण का अभिधेय

पुराण से सुभाषित रत्न उत्पन्न होते हैं। इसमें तीर्थंकरों और मुनियों की संपदा का वर्णन है। जीव, बंध, मोक्ष, द्रव्य, और पदार्थ इसमें हैं। तीनों लोक और काल का संग्रह है। सत्यदर्शन, मोक्ष, और पुरुषार्थ इसमें हैं। यह समस्त धर्म-सृष्टि को वर्णित करता है। यह कसौटी-सा पदार्थों की परीक्षा करता है। इसमें 63 अधिकार हैं।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 2- Shlok 116 to 125

श्लोक ( Shlok )116

 यथा महाष्यरखानां प्रसूतिर्मकराकरात् । तथैव सूक्तरबानां प्रभवोऽस्मात् पुराणतः ॥ ११६॥

जिस प्रकार महामूल्य रत्नों की उत्पत्ति समुद्र से होती है उसी प्रकार सुभाषितरूपी रत्नों की उत्पत्ति इस पुराण से होती है ।।116।। 

“Just as precious gems originate from the ocean, similarly, gem-like wise sayings originate from this Purana.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )117

तीर्थक्रचक्रवतीन्द्र वलकेशवसंपदः । मुनीनामृद्धयश्चास्य वक्तव्याः सह कारणैः ॥११७॥

इस पुराण में तीर्थंकर, चक्रवर्ती, इंद्र, बलभद्र और नारायणों की संपदा तथा मुनियों की ऋद्धियों का उनकी प्राप्ति के कारणों के साथ-साथ वर्णन किया जायेगा ।।117।। 

“In this Purana, the wealth of Tirthankaras, Chakravartis, Indras, Balabhadras, and Narayanas, as well as the spiritual attainments of monks, will be described along with the reasons for their attainment.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )118

 बद्धो मुक्तस्तथा बन्धो मोक्षस्तद्वयकारणम् । षड् द्रव्याणीपदार्थाश्च नवेत्यस्यार्थसंग्रहः ॥ ११८॥

इसी प्रकार संसारी जीव, मुक्त जीव, बंध, मोक्ष, इन दोनों के कारण, छह द्रव्य और नव पदार्थ ये सब इस ग्रंथ के अर्थ संग्रह हैं अर्थात् इस सबका इसमें वर्णन किया जायेगा ।।118।। 

“Similarly, the worldly beings, liberated souls, bondage, liberation, the causes of both, the six substances, and the nine principles—all these are the subjects of meaning encompassed in this scripture and will be described in it.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )119

जगत्त्रयनिवेशश्च त्रैकाल्यस्य च संग्रहः । जगतः सृष्टिसंहारौ चेति कृत्स्नमिहोद्यते ॥ ११९॥

 इस पुराण में तीनों लोकों की रचना, तीनों कालों का संग्रह, संसार की उत्पत्ति और विनाश इन सबका वर्णन किया जायेगा ।।119।। 

“In this Purana, the creation of the three worlds, the compilation of the three times (past, present, and future), and the origin and destruction of the universe will all be described.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )120

 “मार्गों मार्गफलं चेति पुरुषार्थसमुच्चयः । यावान् प्रविस्तरस्तस्य धन्ते सोऽस्याभिधेयताम् ॥१२०॥

सत्यदर्शन, सम्यग्ज्ञान और सम्यक्चारित्र रूप मार्ग, मोक्ष रूप इसका फल तथा धर्म, अर्थ और काम ये पुरुषार्थ इन सत्र का जो कुछ विस्तार है वह सब इस ग्रंथ की अभिधेयता को धारण करता है अर्थात् उसका इसमें कथन किया जायेगा ।।120।।

“The path consisting of true vision, right knowledge, and right conduct, its fruit in the form of liberation, and the pursuits of dharma (righteousness), artha (wealth), and kama (desire)—all the details of these topics are encompassed within the scope of this scripture and will be elaborated upon within it.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )121

किमत्र बहुनोक्तेन धर्मसृष्टिरविप्लुता । यावतो सास्य वक्तव्यपदवीमवगाहते ॥१२१॥

अधिक कहने से क्या, जो कुछ जितनी निर्बाध धर्म को सृष्टि है बह सब इस ग्रंथ की वर्णनीय वस्तु है ।।121।। 

“What more can be said? Everything that constitutes the uninterrupted essence of dharma is the subject to be described in this scripture.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )122

सुदुर्लभं यदन्यत्र चिरादपि सुभाषितम् । सुलभं स्वैरसंग्राह्यं तदिहास्ति पदे पदे ।।१२२॥

जो सुभाषित दूसरी जगह बहुत समय तक खोजने पर भी नहीं मिल सकते उनका संग्रह इस पुराण में अपनी इच्छानुसार पद-पद पर किया जा सकता है ।।122।। 

“The collection of wise sayings that cannot be found elsewhere, even after extensive searching, can be gathered in this Purana at every step as desired.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )123

यदत्र सुस्थितं वस्तु तदेव निकषक्षमम् । यदन दुःस्थितं नाम तत्सर्वत्रैव दुःस्थितम् ॥१२३॥

 इस ग्रंथ में जो पदार्थ उत्तम ठहराया गया है वह दूसरी जगह भी उत्तम होगा तथा जो इस ग्रंथ में बुरा ठहराया गया है वह सभी जगह बुरा ही ठहराया जायेगा । भावार्थ―यह ग्रंथ पदार्थों की अच्छाई तथा बुराई की परीक्षा करने के लिए कसौटी के समान है ।।123।। 

“What is deemed excellent in this scripture will be considered excellent elsewhere as well, and what is deemed bad in this scripture will be regarded as bad everywhere.

Meaning: This scripture serves as a touchstone for evaluating the goodness and badness of things.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )124

एवं महाभिधेयस्य पुराणस्यास्य भूयसः । क्रियतेऽर्थाधिकाराणामि त्तानुगमोऽधुना ॥१२४॥

इस प्रकार यह महापुराण बहुत भारी विषयों का निरूपण करने वाला है । अब इसके अर्थाधिकारी की संख्या का नियम कहते हैं ।।124।।

“Thus, this Mahapurana explains profound and significant subjects. Now, the rule regarding the number of those eligible to understand its meaning is stated.”

श्लोक ( Shlok )125

त्रयः षष्टिरिहार्याधिकाराः प्रोक्ता महर्षिभिः । कथापुरुषसंख्यायास्तप्रमाणानतिक्रमात् ॥ १२५॥

इस ग्रंथ में तिरसठ महापुरुषों का वर्णन किया जायेगा इसलिए उसी संख्या के अनुसार ऋषियों ने इसके तिरसठ ही अधिकार कहे हैं ।।125।।

“This scripture will describe the sixty-three great personalities; therefore, the sages have declared that it has exactly sixty-three aspects of authority (eligibility for understanding).”

श्लोक 126 से 135

श्लोक 96 से 105 पुराण का प्रारंभ और अनुयोग

गौतम स्वामी ने भव्यजनों से पुराण सुनने को कहा। उन्होंने वृषभदेव द्वारा भरत को कहा पुराण श्रेणिक के लिए कहा। श्रुतस्कंध के चार अनुयोग हैं। प्रथमानुयोग में सत्पुरुषों का चरित्र है। करणानुयोग में लोकों का वर्णन है। चरणानुयोग में चारित्र-शुद्धि है। द्रव्यानुयोग में द्रव्यों का निर्णय है। उपक्रम के पाँच भेद हैं। प्रथमानुयोग पहला और अंतिम दोनों हो सकता है।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 2- Shlok 96 to 105

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 96

श्रुतं मया श्रुतस्कन्धादायुष्मन्तो महाधियः । “निबोधत पुराणं में यथावत् कथयामि वः ।।

वे कहने लगे―हे आयुष्मान बुद्धिमान् भव्यजनो, मैंने श्रुतस्कंध से जैसा कुछ इस पुराण को सुना है सो ज्यों का त्यों आप लोगों के लिए कहता हूँ, आप लोग ध्यान से सुनें ।।96।।

He began to speak: “O auspicious and wise noble ones, whatever I have heard from the section of the scriptures, I will convey to you exactly as it is. Please listen attentively.”

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 97

यत् प्रजापतये ब्रह्मा भरतायादितीर्थकृत् । प्रोवाच तदहं तेऽद्य वक्ष्ये श्रेणिक भोः श्टणु ॥९७।

हे श्रेणिक, आदि ब्रह्मा प्रथम तीर्थकर भगवान् वृषभदेव ने भरत चक्रवर्ती के लिए जो पुराण कहा था उसे ही मैं आज तुम्हारे लिए कहता हूँ, तुम ध्यान देकर सुनो ।।97।।

O Shrenik, the ancient Brahma, the first Tirthankar Lord Vrishabhdev, spoke the Puranas for Bharat Chakravarti, and it is the same Puranas that I am now conveying to you. Listen attentively.”

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 98

महाधिकाराश्चत्वारः श्रुतस्कन्धस्य वर्णिताः । तेषामाद्योऽनुयोगोऽयं सतां सच्चरिताश्रयः ॥ ९८।।

श्रुतस्कंध के चार महा अधिकार वर्णित किये गये हैं उनमें पहले अनुयोग का नाम प्रथमानुयोग है । प्रथमानुयोग में तीर्थकर आदि सत्पुरुषों के चरित्र का वर्णन होता है ।।98।। 

The Shrutaskandha (scriptural canon) is categorized into four major divisions, the first of which is called Prathamanuyoga. Prathamanuyoga includes the narration of the lives and virtues of Tirthankaras and other noble personalities. ||98||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 99

द्वितीयः करणादिः स्यादनुयोगः स यत्र है । त्रैलोक्यक्षेत्रसंख्यानं कुलपत्रेऽधिरोपितम् ।।९९।।

दूसरे महाधिकार का नाम करणानुयोग है । इसमें तीनों लोकों का वर्णन उस प्रकार लिखा होता है जिस प्रकार किसी ताम्रपत्र पर किसी की वंशावली लिखी होती है ।।99।।

The name of the second major division is Karananuyoga. It describes the three worlds (lokas) in a manner similar to how a genealogy is inscribed on a copper plate. ||99||

श्लोक ( Shlok )100

चरणादिस्तृतीयः स्यादनुयोगो जिनोदितः । यत्र चर्याविधानस्य परा शुद्धिरुदाहृता ।।१००।।

जिनेंद्रदेव ने तीसरे महाधिकार को चरणानुयोग बतलाया है । इसमें मुनि और श्रावकों के चारित्र की शुद्धि का निरूपण होता है ।।100।। 

Lord Jinendra has described the third major division as Charananuyoga. It explains the purification of conduct for monks and householders. ||100||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 101

तुर्यो द्रव्यानुयोगस्तु इष्यायां यत्र निर्णयः । प्रमाणनयनिक्षेपैः सदाचैश्च किमादिभिः ॥101

चौथा महाधिकार द्रव्यानुयोग है इसमें प्रमाण नय निक्षेप तथा सत्संख्या क्षेत्र, स्पर्शन, काल, अंतर, भाव, अल्पबहुत्व, निर्देश, स्वामित्व, साधन, अधिकरण, स्थिति, विधान आदि के द्वारा द्रव्यों का निर्णय किया जाता है ।।101।।

The fourth major division is Dravyanuyoga, which determines the nature of substances through methods such as Pramana (valid knowledge), Naya (perspectives), Niksepa (contextual analysis), and categories like existence, area, touch, time, interval, states, quantity, indication, ownership, means, location, condition, and structure. ||101||

श्लोक ( Shlok )102

आनुपूर्व्यादिभेदेन पञ्चधोपक्रमो मतः । स पुराणावतारेऽस्मिन् योजनीयो यथागमम् ।।१०२।।

आनुपूर्वी आदि के भेद से उपक्रम के पाँच भेद माने गये हैं । इस पुराण के प्रारंभ में उन उपक्रमों का शास्त्रानुसार संबंध लगा लेना चाहिए ।।102।। 

Based on distinctions such as Anupurvi (sequential order) and others, five types of Upakrama (introductions) are recognized. At the beginning of this Purana, these introductions should be connected as per the guidelines of the scriptures. ||102||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 103

प्रकृतस्यार्थतत्वस्य श्रोतृबुद्धौ समर्पणम् । उपक्रमोऽसौ विज्ञेयस्तथोपोद्धात इत्यपि ।।१०३।।

 प्रकृत अर्थात् जिसका वर्णन करने की इच्छा है ऐसे पदार्थ को श्रोताओं की बुद्धि में बैठा देना―उन्हें अच्छी तरह समझा देना सो उपक्रम है इसका दूसरा नाम उपोद्धात भी है ।।103।। 

Prakrita, meaning the subject or matter one wishes to describe, is to be firmly instilled in the minds of the listeners—explaining it to them clearly and thoroughly. This is known as Upakrama, which is also referred to as Upodghata (introduction). ||103||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 104

आनुपूर्वी तथा नाम प्रमाणं सामिधेयकम् । अर्थाधिकारश्वेत्येवं पम्चैते स्युरुपक्रमाः ॥१०४॥

 1. आनुपूर्वी, 2. नाम, 3. प्रमाण, 4. अभिधेय और 5. अर्थाधिकार ये उपक्रम के पाँच भेद हैं ।।104।।

1. Anupoorvi (Sequential Order),
2. Naam (Name),
3. Pramaan (Evidence),
4. Abhidheya (Direct Meaning), and
5. Arthadhikar (Implied or Contextual Meaning)

These are the five categories of Upakrama (Introduction/Commencement). Verse 104.

श्लोक ( Shlok )105

‘पूर्वानुपूर्व्या प्रथमश्वरमोऽयं विलोमतः । यथातथानुपूर्व्या च यां कांचिद्रगणनां श्रितः ।।१०५

यदि चारों महाधिकारों को पूर्व क्रम से गिना जाये तो प्रथमानुयोग पहला अनुयोग होता है और यदि उलटे क्रम से गिना जाये तो यही प्रथमानुयोग अंत का अनुयोग होता है । अपनी इच्छानुसार जहाँ कही से भी गणना करने पर यह दूसरा तीसरा आदि किसी भी संख्या का हो सकता है ।।105।। 

If the four Mahadhikaras (great categories of scriptural exposition) are counted in the forward sequence, Prathamanuyoga (the first exposition) is the first. However, if counted in the reverse sequence, the same Prathamanuyoga becomes the last exposition. Depending on one’s preference, when counted from anywhere, it can take the position of the second, third, or any other number.

श्लोक 81 से 95 गौतम का संबोधन

मुनियों की स्तुति से कोलाहल हुआ। गौतम प्रसन्न हुए। उन्होंने प्रार्थना पर ध्यान दिया। श्रोता चुपचाप बैठे। गौतम गंभीर वाणी से बोले। उनकी किरणें सरस्वती-सी थीं। वे भक्ति से रत्न दिखाते थे। तप माहात्म्य से शोभित। बिना परिश्रम सरस्वती प्रकट।वे वैराग्य और विनय प्रकट करते थे।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 2- Shlok 81 to 95

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 81

स्वत्प्रसादादियं देव सफला मीरार्थनाऽस्तु नः । सार्ध राजर्षिणानेन श्रोतूननुगृहाण नः ॥८१॥

हे देव, आपके प्रसाद से हमारी यह प्रार्थना सफल हो । आज राजर्षि श्रेणिक के साथ-साथ हम सब श्रोताओं पर कृपा कीजिए ।।81।।

O God, may our prayer be successful through Your grace. Today, please shower Your blessings upon us listeners, along with King Shrenik, the great ruler.” (81)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 82

इत्युष्खैः स्तोत्रसंपादैस्तरक्षणं प्रविजुम्मितः । पुण्यो सुनिसमाजेऽस्मिन् महान् कलकलोऽभवत् ॥८२॥

इस प्रकार मुनियों ने जब उच्च स्वर से स्तोत्रों से जो गणधर गौतम स्वामी की स्तुति की थी उससे उस समय मुनि समाज में पुण्यवर्द्धक बड़ा भारी कोलाहल होने लगा था ।।82।।

“Thus, when the sages, with loud voices, sang hymns in praise of the revered Gandharva Gautam Swami, a great and auspicious commotion arose in the community of monks at that time.” (82)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 83

 इस्थं स्तुवद्भिरोधेन मुनि वृन्दारकैस्तदा । प्रस्तादितो गणेन्त्रोऽभूद् अक्तिग्राह्या हि योगिनः ॥८३॥

इस प्रकार समुदाय रूप से बड़े-बड़े मुनियों ने जब गणधर देव की स्तुति की तब वे प्रसन्न हुए । सो ठीक ही है क्योंकि योगीजन भक्ति के द्वारा वशीभूत होते ही है ।।83।।

“Thus, when the great monks of the community praised Gandharva Dev, He was pleased. This is indeed true, for the yogis are always subdued through devotion.” (83)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 84

  तदाँ प्रशान्तगम्भीरं स्तुत्वा मुनिभिरर्थितः । मनो व्यापारयामास गौतमस्तदनुअहे ॥८४॥

इस प्रकार मुनियों ने जब बड़ी शांति और गंभीरता के साथ स्तुति कर गणधर महाराज से प्रार्थना की तब उन्होंने उनके अनुग्रह में अपना चित्त लगाया―उस ओर ध्यान दिया ।।84।।

Thus, when the sages, with great calmness and seriousness, praised and prayed to King Gandhar for grace, he focused his mind in devotion towards them.

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 85-95

ततः प्रशान्तसंजल्पे प्रभ्यफकरकुड्मले । शुश्रूषावहिते साधुसमाजे निभृतं स्थिते ॥ ८५ll

वाङ्‌मलानामशेषाणामपायाइतिनिर्मलाम् । वाग्देवीं दशनज्योत्स्नाम्याजेन स्फुटयजिव ॥८६॥

सुभाषितमहारक्षप्रसारमिव दर्शयन् । यथाकामं जिघृक्षूणां मक्तिमूल्येन योगिनाम् ॥८७॥

लसद्दशनदीप्तांशुप्रसूनैराकिरन् सदः । सरस्वतीप्रवेशाय पूर्वरङ्गमिवाचरन् ।॥८८।।

 मनःप्रसादममितो विमजद्भिरिवायतैः । प्रसन्नैवांक्षितैः कृत्स्नां समां प्रक्षालयत्तिव ॥८९॥

तपोऽनुभावसंजातमध्यासीनोऽपि विष्टरम् । जगतामुपरीवोच्चैमहिम्ना घटितस्थितिः ।॥९०॥

सरस्वतीपरिक्लेशमनिच्छश्निव नाधिकम् । तीव्रयन् करणस्पन्दमभिन्नमुखसौष्ठवः ॥९१॥

 न स्वियन परिश्राम्यत्रो त्रस्यन परिस्खलन् । सरस्वतीमतिप्रौढामनायासेन योजयन् ॥९२।।

समसृज्वायतस्थानमास्थाय रचितासनः । पल्यङ्गेन परां कोटीं वैराग्यस्येव रूपयन् ।।९३।।

करं वामं स्वपर्यवे निधायोत्तानितं शनैः । देशनाहस्तमुत्क्षिप्य मार्दवं नाटयग्निव ।।९४।।

ग्याजहारातिगम्भीरमधुरोदारया गिरा । भगवान् गौतमस्वामी श्रोतून् संबोधयनिति ।॥९५।।

इसके अनंतर जब स्तुति से उत्पन्न होने वाला कोलाहल शांत हो गया और सब लोग हाथ जोड़कर पुराण सुनने की इच्छा से सावधान हो चुपचाप बैठ गये तब वे भगवान् गौतम स्वामी श्रोताओं को संबोधते हुए गंभीर मनोहर और उत्कृष्ट अर्थ से भरी हुई वाणी द्वारा कहने लगे । उस समय जो दाँतों की उज्ज्वल किरणें निकल रही थीं उनसे ऐसा मालूम होता था मानों वे शब्द संबंधी समस्त दोषों के अभाव से अत्यंत निर्मल हुई सरस्वती देवी को ही साक्षात् प्रकट कर रहे हों । उस समय वे गणधर स्वामी ऐसे शोभायमान हो रहे थे जैसे भक्तिरूपी मूल्य के द्वारा अपनी इच्छानुसार खरीदने के अभिलाषी मुनिजनों को सुभाषित रूपी महारत्नों का समूह ही दिखला रहे हों । उस समय वे अपने दाँतों के किरणरूपी फूलों को सारी सभा में बिखेर रहे थे जिससे ऐसा मालूम होता था मानो सरस्वती देवी के प्रवेश के लिए रंगभूमि को ही सजा रहे हो । मन की प्रसन्नता को विभक्त करने के लिए ही मानो सब ओर फैली हुई अपनी स्वच्छ और प्रसन्न दृष्टि के द्वारा वे गौतम स्वामी समस्त सभा का प्रक्षालन करते हुए-से मालूम होते थे । यद्यपि वे ऋषिराज तपश्चरण के माहात्म्य से प्राप्त हुए आसन पर बैठे हुए थे तथापि अपने उत्कृष्ट माहात्म्य से ऐसे मालूम होते थे मानो समस्त लोक के ऊपर ही बैठे हों । उस समय वे न तो सरस्वती को ही अधिक कष्ट देना चाहते थे और न इंद्रियों को ही अधिक चलायमान करना चाहते थे । बोलते समय उनके मुख का सौंदर्य भी नष्ट नहीं हुआ था । उस समय उन्हें न तो पसीना आता था, न परिश्रम ही होता था, न किसी बात का भय ही लगता था और न वे बोलते-बोलते स्खलित ही होते थे―चूकते थे । वे बिना किसी परिश्रम के ही अतिशय प्रौढ़-गंभीर सरस्वती को प्रकट कर रहे थे । वे उस समय सम, सीधे और विस्तृत स्थान पर पयेंकासन से बैठे हुए थे जिससे ऐसे मालूम होते थे मानो शरीर द्वारा वैराग्य की अंतिम सीमा को ही प्रकट कर रहे हों । उस समय उनका बायाँ हाथ पर्यंक पर था और दाहिना हाथ उपदेश देने के लिए कुछ ऊपर को उठा हुआ था जिससे ऐसे मालूम होते थे मानो वे मार्दव (विनय) धर्म को नृत्य ही करा रहे हों अर्थात् उच्चतम विनय गुण को प्रकट कर रहे हों ।।85-95।। 

Afterward, when the noise generated by the praise subsided, and all the people, with their hands folded, sat quietly, eager to listen to the Puranas, the Lord Gautam Swami, addressing the listeners, began to speak in a grave, beautiful, and profound tone. At that moment, the radiant beams of his teeth seemed to manifest Saraswati Devi, who appeared to be free from all defects related to speech, shining with purity. The Gandhar Swami appeared so magnificent that it seemed as though he was showing the group of precious gems in the form of auspicious words, which he was ready to offer to the aspiring sages. At that time, he scattered the radiant beams of his teeth like flowers throughout the assembly, as though preparing the stage for the arrival of Saraswati Devi. With his clear and joyful gaze, it seemed as though he was cleansing the entire gathering. Though seated on the seat he had earned through his devotion and penance, his supreme radiance made it appear as though he were sitting above the entire world. At that moment, he neither wished to trouble Saraswati nor stir the senses. His face did not lose its beauty while speaking. He did not sweat, feel any fatigue, nor did he seem to fear anything, nor did he falter in his speech. He revealed the profoundly wise Saraswati without any effort. Sitting in a steady and vast position, it seemed as though he was manifesting the ultimate detachment through his body. His left hand rested on the seat while his right hand was raised slightly to impart wisdom, giving the impression that he was leading the dance of modesty (humility) and revealing the highest virtue of humility.

गौतम आठ विक्रिया ऋद्धियों से युक्त हैं। वे आमर्ष, क्ष्वेल आदि ऋद्धियों से सुशोभित हैं। वे रस और बल ऋद्धियों से संपन्न हैं। वे चारण और अक्षीण ऋद्धियों के धारक हैं। वे परम हितकारी और गुरु हैं। उनकी सेवा से ज्ञान मिलता है। वे धर्मशास्त्र वर्णन करते हैं। उनकी स्तुति से गुप्तियाँ भंग होती हैं। वे शलाकापुरुषों का पुराण सुनाएँ।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 2- Shlok 71 to 80

श्लोक ( Shlok )71

नमस्ते विक्रियींनामष्टधा सिद्धिमीयुषे । भामर्ष क्ष्वेलवाग्विश्रुजलसर्वोषधे नमः ॥७१

हे देव, आप अणिमा, महिमा, गरिमा, लघिमा, प्राप्ति, प्राकाम्य, ईशित्व और वशित्व इन आठ विक्रिया ऋद्धियों की सिद्धि को प्राप्त हुए हैं अर्थात् (1) आप अपने शरीर को परमाणु के समान सूक्ष्म कर सकते है, (2) मेरु से भी स्थूल बना सकते हैं, (3) अत्यंत भारी (वजनदार) कर सकते हें, (4) हलका (कम वजनदार) बना सकते हैं, (5) आप जमीन पर बैठे-बैठे ही मेरु पर्वत की चोटी छू सकते हैं अथवा देवों के आसन कंपायमान कर सकते हैं, (6) आप अढ़ाई द्वीप में चाहे जहाँ जा सकते हैं अथवा जल में स्थल की तरह स्थल में जल की तरह चल सकते हैं, (7) आप चक्रवर्ती के समान विभूति को प्राप्त कर सकते हैं और (8) विरोधी जीवों को भी वश में कर सकते हैं अत: आपको नमस्कार हो । इनके सिवाय हे देव, आप आमर्ष, क्ष्वेल, वाग्विप्रुट, जल्ल और सर्वौषधि आदि ऋद्धियों से सुशोभित हैं अर्थात् (1) आपके वमन की वायु समस्त रोगों को नष्ट कर सकती है, (2) आपके मुख से निकले हुए कफ को स्पर्श कर बहने वाली वायु सब रोगों को हर सकती है, (3) आपके मुख से निकली हुई वायु सब रोगों को नष्ट कर सकती है, (4) आपके मल को स्पर्श कर बहती हुई वायु सब रोगों को हर सकती है और (5) आपके शरीर को स्पर्श कर बहती हुई वायु सब रोगों को दूर कर सकती है । इसलिए आपको नमस्कार हो ।।71। 

“Oh Lord, you have attained the perfection of the eight miraculous powers, namely Anima (ability to become as small as an atom), Mahima (ability to become infinitely large), Garima (ability to become immensely heavy), Laghima (ability to become extremely light), Prapti (ability to reach anywhere), Prakamy (ability to fulfill any desire), Ishitva (lordship over all beings), and Vashitva (ability to control all). That is, (1) you can make your body as tiny as an atom, (2) you can make it larger than Mount Meru, (3) you can make it extraordinarily heavy, (4) you can make it light as a feather, (5) while seated, you can touch the summit of Mount Meru or cause the thrones of the gods to tremble, (6) you can travel anywhere, even between islands, or walk on water as though it were land, (7) you can attain the divine powers of a Chakravarti, and (8) you can bring even opposing beings under your control. Therefore, we bow to you.

Apart from these, O Lord, you are also endowed with miraculous powers such as Amarsa (ability to eliminate diseases), Kshvela (ability to cure with air), Vaghvipruta (ability to cure through speech), Jalla (ability to cure through water), and Sarvoushadhi (ability to heal through all remedies). That is, (1) the air of your vomit can destroy all diseases, (2) the air touched by the phlegm from your mouth can cure all diseases, (3) the air emanating from your mouth can destroy all diseases, (4) the air flowing from the spot where your stool touches can eliminate all diseases, and (5) the air flowing from the place where your body is touched can remove all diseases. Therefore, we bow to you.” (Verse 71)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 72

नमोऽसृतमधुक्षीरसपिंरास्त्रविणेऽस्तु ते । नमो मनोवचःकायबलिनां ते बलीयसे ।।७२।।

हे देव, आप अमृतस्राविणी, मधुस्राविणी, क्षीरस्राविणी और वृतस्राविणी आदि रस ऋद्धियों को धारण करने वाले हैं अर्थात् (1) भोजन में मिला हुआ विष भी आपके प्रभाव से अमृतरूप हो सकता है (2) भोजन मीठा न होने पर भी आपके प्रभाव से मीठा हो सकता है, (3) आपके निमित्त से भोजनगृह अथवा भोजन में दूध झरने लग सकता है और (4) आपके प्रभाव से भोजनगृह से घी की कमी दूर हो सकती है । अत: आपको नमस्कार हो । इनके सिवाय आप मनोबल, वचनबल और कायबल ऋद्धि से संपन्न हैं अर्थात् आप समस्त द्वादशांग का अंतर्मुहूर्त में अर्थरूप से चिंतवन कर सकते हैं, समस्त द्वादशांग का अंतर्मुहूर्त में शब्दों द्वारा उच्चारण कर सकते हैं और शरीरसंबंधी अतुल्य बल से सहित हैं अत: आपको नमस्कार हो ।।72।। 

“Oh Lord, you possess the miraculous powers related to the flows of nectar, honey, milk, and other essences. That is, (1) even poison mixed in food can turn into nectar under your influence, (2) food, although not sweet, can become sweet by your power, (3) milk may begin to flow from the food or food preparation because of you, and (4) the lack of ghee in the food can be removed by your influence. Therefore, we bow to you.

Apart from these, you are endowed with the powers of mental strength, speech power, and physical strength. That is, you can contemplate the meanings of all the twelve Angas (scriptural texts) in an instant, you can recite the entire twelve Angas with words in an instant, and you are endowed with unparalleled physical strength. Therefore, we bow to you.” (Verse 72)

श्लोक ( Shlok )73

जलज हाफल श्रेणीतन्तुपुष्पाम्बरश्रयात् । चारणर्दिजुषे तुभ्यं नमोऽक्षीणमहर्द्धये ॥७३॥

। हे देव, आप जलचारण, जंघाचारण, फलचारण, श्रेणीचारण, तंतुचारण, पुष्पचारण और अंबरचारण आदि चारण ऋद्धियों से युक्त हैं अर्थात् (1) आप जल में भी स्थल के समान चल सकते हैं तथा ऐसा करने पर जलकायिक और जलचर जीवों को आपके द्वारा किसी प्रकार की बाधा नहीं होगी । (2) आप बिना कदम उठाये ही आकाश में चल सकते है । (3) आप वृक्षों में लगे फलों पर से गमन कर सकते हैं और ऐसा करनेपर भी वे फल वृक्ष से टूटकर नीचे नहीं गिरेंगे । (4) आप आकाश में श्रेणीबद्ध गमन कर सकते हैं, बीच में आये हुए पर्वत आदि भी आपको नहीं रोक सकते । (5) आप सूत अथवा मकड़ी के जाल के तंतुओं पर गमन कर सकते हैं पर वे आपके भार से टूटेंगे नहीं । (6) आप पुष्पों पर भी गमन कर सकते हैं परंतु वे आपके भार से नहीं टूटेंगे और न उसमें रहने वाले जीवों को किसी प्रकार का कष्ट होगा । और (7) इनके सिवाय आप आकाश में भी सर्वत्र गमनागमन कर सकते हैं । इसलिए आपको नमस्कार हो । हे स्वामिन्, आप अक्षीण ऋद्धि के धारक हैं अर्थात् आप जिस भोजनशाला में भोजन कर आवे उसका भोजन चक्रवर्ती के कटक को खिलाने पर भी क्षीण नहीं होगा और आप यदि छोटे से स्थान में भी बैठकर धर्मोपदेश आदि देंगे तो उस स्थान पर समस्त मनुष्य और देव आदि के बैठने पर भी संकीर्णता नहीं होगी । इसलिए आपको नमस्कार हो ।।73।।

Oh Lord, you are endowed with the miraculous powers related to various types of movements (Charan Vidyas), such as water-walking, walking on branches, and more. That is, (1) you can walk on water just as you do on land, and even in doing so, the aquatic and water-dwelling beings will not be disturbed by your presence. (2) You can walk in the sky without taking a single step. (3) You can move over fruits on trees without causing them to fall. (4) You can move in an orderly fashion through the sky, and even mountains in your path cannot obstruct you. (5) You can walk on threads like cotton or spider webs, yet they will not break under your weight. (6) You can walk on flowers, and even with your weight, they will not break, nor will the beings dwelling within them be harmed. (7) Besides these, you can also travel through the sky in all directions. Therefore, we bow to you.

Oh Lord, you are the holder of inexhaustible miraculous powers. That is, the food you partake in will remain abundant, even if it is used to feed the entire realm of a Chakravarti. Furthermore, if you give religious teachings in a small space, that space will remain spacious, even when filled with humans, gods, and other beings. Therefore, we bow to you.” (Verse 73)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 74

 स्वमेव परमो बन्धुस्त्वमेव परमो गुरुः । त्वामेव सेवमानानां भवन्ति ज्ञानसंपदः ॥७४॥

हे नाथ, संसार में आप ही परम हितकारी बंधु हैं, आप ही परमगुरु हैं और आपकी सेवा करने वाले पुरुषों को ज्ञानरूपी संपत्ति की प्राप्ति होती है ।।74।।

“Oh Lord, you alone are the supreme benefactor in the world, you are the ultimate teacher, and those who serve you attain the wealth of knowledge.” (Verse 74)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 75

त्वयैय भगवन् विश्वा विहिता धर्मसंहिता’ । अत एव नमस्तुभ्यममी कुर्वन्ति योगिनः ॥७५॥

हे भगवन् इस संसार में आपने ही समस्त धर्मशास्त्रों का वर्णन किया है अत: ये बड़े-बड़े योगी आपको ही नमस्कार करते हैं ।।75।।

“Oh Lord, in this world, you alone have described all the religious scriptures. Therefore, these great yogis bow down to you.” (Verse 75)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 76

स्वत्त एव परं श्रेयो मन्यमानास्ततो वयम् । तत्र पादाङ्घ्रिपच्छायां स्वय्यास्तिक्यादुपास्महे ॥७६

हे देव, मोक्षरूपी परम कल्याण की प्राप्ति आपसे ही होती है ऐसा मानकर हम लोग आपमें श्रद्धा रखते हुए आपके चरणरूप वृक्षों की छाया का आश्रय लेते हैं ।।76।। 

“Oh Lord, believing that the attainment of ultimate welfare in the form of liberation (moksha) is possible only through you, we place our faith in you and take refuge under the shadow of your lotus feet, which are like trees.” (Verse 76)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 77

वाग्गुप्तेस्त्वत्स्तुतौ हानिर्मनोगुप्तेस्तव स्मृतौ । कायगुप्तेः प्रणामे ते काममस्तु सदापि नः ॥७७॥

 हे देव, आपकी स्तुति करने से हमारी वचनगुप्ति की हानि होती है, आपका स्मरण करने से मनोगुप्ति में बाधा पहुँचती है तथा आपको नमस्कार करने में कायगुप्ति की हानि होती है सो भले ही हो हमें इसकी चिंता नहीं, हम सदा ही आपकी स्तुति करेंगे, आपका स्मरण करेंगे और आपको नमस्कार करेंगे ।।77।।

“Oh Lord, praising you causes harm to our verbal restraint, remembering you disrupts our mental restraint, and bowing to you harms our physical restraint. However, we are not concerned about any of this. We will always praise you, remember you, and bow to you.” (Verse 77)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 78

 स्तुत्वेति स्तुतिभिः स्तुत्यं मदन्तं भुवनाधिकम् । पुराणश्रतिमेबैनां तत्फलं प्रार्थयामहे ॥७८॥

हे स्वामिन् जगत् में श्रेष्ठ और स्तुति करने के योग्य आपकी हम लोगों ने जो ऊपर लिखे अनुसार क्षति की है उसके फलस्वरूप हमें तिरसठ शलाकापुरुषों का पुराण सुनाइए, यही हम सब प्रार्थना करते हैं ।।78।।

Oh Lord, in this world, you are the greatest and worthy of praise. As a result of the harm we have caused, as mentioned above, we humbly pray to you to narrate to us the story of the Sixty-Three Salakapurushas (Great Beings). This is our prayer.” (Verse 78)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 79

पुराणश्रुतितो धर्मों योऽस्माकममिसंस्कृतः । पुराणकवितामेव तस्मादाशास्महे वयम् ॥७९॥

हे देव, पुराण के सुनने से हमें जो सुयोग्य धर्म की प्राप्ति होगी उससे हम कवितारूप पुराण की ही आशा करते है ।।79।। 

“Oh Lord, by listening to the Purana, we expect to attain the proper path of righteousness, and for this, we hope to hear the Purana in the form of poetry.” (Verse 79)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 80

स्वत्पदाराधनात् पुण्यं यदस्माभिरुपार्जितम् । तबैव तेन भूयानः परार्था संपवूर्जिता ॥८०॥

 हे नाथ, आपके चरणों की आराधना करने से हमारे जो कुछ पुण्य का संचय हुआ है उससे हमें भी आपकी इस उत्कृष्ट महासंपत्ति की प्राप्ति हो ।।80।।

“O Lord, may the accumulation of our merits through the worship of Your holy feet grant us the attainment of this supreme treasure of Yours.” (80)

आदिपुराण Ādi purāṇa पर्व 2 – श्लोक 1 से 10 | श्लोक 11 से 20 |

श्लोक 21 से 30 श्रेणिक की प्रार्थना

श्रेणिक ने अज्ञानवश पाप किए। उन्होंने हिंसा, झूठ आदि से घोर पाप संचित किए। मुनि-वध में आनंद लिया। वे पुराण सुनकर पाप-निराकरण चाहते हैं। दांतों की कांति से स्तुति कर चुप हुए। मुनियों ने श्रेणिक की प्रशंसा की। वे प्रश्न में श्रेष्ठ हैं। उन्होंने चित्त हर्षित किया। वे वही पुराण पूछते हैं जो मुनि चाहते थे। श्रेणिक का प्रश्न पुराण पूछने वालों से मेल खाता। धर्म स्वरूप जानने से संसार स्वरूप की इच्छा प्रकट की।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 2- Shlok 21 to 20

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 21

विज्ञाप्यमन्यदप्यस्ति समाधाय मनः शृणु । यतो भगवतश्चित्तं दृढं स्यान्मन्नुग्रहे ॥२१॥

हे भगवन इसके सिवाय एक बात और कहनी है उसे चित्त स्थिर कर सुन लीजिए जिससे मेरा उपकार करने में आपका चित्त और भी दृढ़ हो जाये ।।21।।

O Lord, apart from this, I have one more thing to say. Please listen to it with a focused mind so that your resolve to help me becomes even firmer. ||21||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 22

पुरा चरितमज्ञानान्मया दुश्चरितं महत् । तस्यैनसः प्रशान्त्यर्थ प्रायश्चित्तं चराम्यहम् ॥ २२॥

वह बात यह है कि मैंने पहले अज्ञानवश बड़े-बड़े दुराचरण किये है । अब उन पापों की शांति के लिए ही यह प्रायश्चित्त ले रहा हूँ ।।22।। 

That matter is that, in the past, out of ignorance, I committed many grave misdeeds. Now, I am undertaking this penance to atone for those sins. ||22||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 23

 हिसानृता न्यरैरामारख्यारम्भपरिग्रहैः । मया संचितमशन पुरैनो निरयोचितम् ॥२३॥

हे नाथ, मुझ अज्ञानी ने पहले हिंसा, झूठ, चोरी, परस्त्रीसेवन और अनेक प्रकार के आरंभ तथा परिग्रहादि के द्वारा अत्यंत घोर पापों का संचय किया है ।।23।। 

O Lord, in my ignorance, I have previously accumulated extremely grave sins through violence, falsehood, theft, indulgence in others’ wives, and various forms of possessiveness and worldly attachments. ||23||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 24

 कृतो सुनिवधानन्दस्तीम्रो मिध्यादृशा मया । येनायुष्कर्म दुर्मोचं बद्धं श्वाश्रीं गांतें प्रति ॥२४॥

और तो क्या, मुझ मिथ्यादृष्टि ने मुनिराज के वध करने में भी बड़ा आनंद माना था जिससे मुझे नरक ले जाने वाले नरकायु कम का ऐसा बंध हुआ जो कभी छूट नहीं सकता ।

And not only that, in my deluded state, I even took great pleasure in causing harm to revered monks. As a result, I became bound by the karmas leading to hellish existences, karmas so strong that they cannot be easily escaped. ||24||

श्लोक ( Shlok )25

 तत्प्रसीद विभो वक्तुमामूलात् पावनों कथाम् । निष्कयों दुष्कृतस्यास्तु मम पुण्यकथाश्रुतिः ॥२५॥

 इसलिए हे प्रभो, उस पवित्र पुराण के प्रारंभ से कहने के लिए मुझ पर प्रसन्न होइए क्योंकि उस पुण्यवर्धक पुराण के सुनने से मेरे पापों का अवश्य ही निराकरण हो जायेगा ।।25।।

Therefore, O Lord, be pleased to narrate that sacred Purana from the very beginning, as listening to that virtuous and merit-enhancing scripture will surely absolve me of my sins. ||25||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 26

इति प्रश्रयिणी वाचमुदीर्य मगधाधिपः । म्यरमदशनज्योत्स्नाकृतपुष्पार्चनस्तुतिः ॥२६॥

इस प्रकार दाँतों की कांतिरूपी पुष्पों के द्वारा पूजा और स्तुति करते हुए मगधसम्राट् विनय के साथ ऊपर कहे हुए वचन कहकर चुप हो गये ।।26।।

In this manner, offering worship and praise with the radiance of his teeth resembling flowers, the Emperor of Magadha, with humility, spoke the aforementioned words and then fell silent. ||26||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 27

 ततस्तमृषयो दीप्ततपोलक्ष्मीविभूषणाः । प्रशशंसुरिति प्रीता धार्मिकं मगधेश्वरम् ॥ २७॥

तदनंतर श्रेणिक के प्रश्न से प्रसन्न हुए और तीव्र तपश्चरणरूपी लक्ष्मी से शोभायमान मुनिजन नीचे लिखे अनुसार उन धर्मात्मा श्रेणिक महाराज की प्रशंसा करने लगे ।।27।। 

Thereafter, pleased by Shrenik’s question and adorned with the splendor of intense austerities, the revered monks began to praise the virtuous King Shrenik in the manner described below. ||27||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 28

  साधु भो मगधाधीश ! साधु प्रश्नविदां वर ! । पृष्ठताद्य त्वया तत्त्वं साधु नः प्रोणितं मनः ॥२८॥

 हे मगधेश्वर, तुम धन्य हो, तुम प्रश्न करने वालों में अत्यंत श्रेष्ठ हो, इसलिए और भी धन्य हो, आज महापुराणसंबंधी प्रश्न पूछते हुए तुमने हम लोगों के चित्त को बहुत ही हर्षित किया है ।।28।।

O Lord of Magadha, you are blessed! You are exceedingly noble among those who ask questions, making you even more praiseworthy. Today, by asking about the great Purana, you have greatly delighted our hearts. ||28||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 29

पिपृच्छिषितमस्माभिर्यदेव ‘परमार्थकम् । तदेवाद्य त्वया पृष्ट संवादः पश्य कीदृशः ॥२९॥

हे श्रेणिक, श्रेष्ठ अक्षरों से सहित जिस पुराण को हम लोग पूछना चाहते थे उसे ही तुमने पूछा है । देखो, यह कैसा अच्छा संबंध मिला है ।।29।।

O Shrenik, the very Purana we were eager to narrate has been asked about by you, adorned with noble words. Behold, how auspicious this connection has turned out to be! ||29||

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 30

“बुभुत्सावेदनं” प्रश्नः स ते धर्मो बुभुत्सितः । त्वया बुभुत्सुना” धर्म विश्वमेव बुभुत्सितम् ॥३०॥

जानने की इच्छा प्रकट करना प्रश्न कहलाता है । आपने अपने प्रश्न में धर्म का स्वरूप जानना चाहा है । सो हे श्रेणिक, धर्म का स्वरूप जानने की इच्छा करते हुए आपने सारे संसार को जानना चाहा है अर्थात् धर्म का स्वरूप जानने की इच्छा से आपने अखिल संसार के स्वरूप को जानने की इच्छा प्रकट की है ।।30।। 

The expression of a desire to know is called a question. In your question, you have expressed a desire to understand the nature of dharma. Thus, O Shrenik, by seeking to understand the nature of dharma, you have, in fact, expressed a desire to understand the nature of the entire world. In other words, through your desire to know dharma, you have shown a wish to know the essence of the whole universe. ||30||

श्लोक 61 से 70 गौतम के गुण

गौतम से मोक्ष द्वार की प्रार्थना। वे ब्रह्मसुत, सिद्ध पद अधीन। मुनि सम्यग्दर्शन आदि की उपासना करते। गौतम को बार-बार नमस्कार (महायोगी, बुद्धिमान, रक्षक, ऋद्धि धारक)। अवधिज्ञान, कोष्ठबुद्धि, बीजबुद्धि, पदानुसारी, संभिन्नश्रोतृ ऋद्धियाँ धारक। ऋजुमति, विपुलमति, प्रत्येक बुद्ध। दश पूर्व धारक, तपस्वी, ब्रह्मचारी, तेजस्वी।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 2- Shlok 61 to 70

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 61

 प्रत्यक्षश्च परोक्षश्च द्विधा ते ज्ञानपर्ययः । केवलं केवलिन्येकस्ततस्त्वं श्रुतकेवली ॥६१॥

 हे देव, केवलीभगवान् में मात्र एक केवलज्ञान ही होता है और आप में प्रत्यक्ष परोक्ष के भेद से दो प्रकार का ज्ञान विद्यमान है इसलिए आप श्रुतकेवली कहलाते हैं ।।61।।

“Oh Lord, in the omniscient Lord (Kevali Bhagwan), there is only one type of knowledge, which is the supreme knowledge. But in you, there are two types of knowledge—direct and indirect. Therefore, you are called Shrutakevali.” (Verse 61)

श्लोक ( Shlok )62

पारेतमः परंधाम प्रवेष्टुमनसो वयम् । तद्द्वारोद्घाटनं बीजं त्वामुपास्य लभेमहि ॥

हे देव, हम लोग मोह अथवा अज्ञानांधकार से रहित मोक्षरूपी परम धाम में प्रवेश करना चाहते हैं अत: आपकी उपासना कर आप से उसका द्वार उघाड़ने का कारण प्राप्त करना चाहते हैं ।।62।।

“Oh Lord, we wish to enter the supreme abode of liberation, free from delusion and the darkness of ignorance. Therefore, we seek to worship you and obtain the reason to open the gateway to that realm.” (Verse 62)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 63

“ब्रह्मोद्या निखिला विद्यास्त्वं हि ब्रह्मसुतो मुनिः । परं ब्रह्म त्वदायत्तमतो ब्रह्मविदो विदुः ॥

 हे देव, आप सर्वज्ञ देव के द्वारा कही हुई समस्त विद्याओं को जानते हैं इसलिए आप ब्रह्मसुत कहलाते हैं तथा परंब्रह्मरूप सिद्ध पद की प्राप्ति होना आपके अधीन है, ऐसा अल का स्वरूप जानने वाले योगीश्वर भी कहते हैं ।।63।।

“Oh Lord, you know all the sciences as spoken by the omniscient God, and therefore, you are called Brahmasut. Moreover, the attainment of the ultimate state of supreme Brahman is under your control, as even the great yogis who understand this truth state.” (Verse 63)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 64

 सुनयो वातरशनाः पदमूर्ध्व” “विधित्सवः । त्वां मूर्द्धवन्दिनो भूत्वा तदुपायमुपासते ।।६४

हे देव, जो दिगंबर मुनि मोक्ष प्राप्त करने के अभिलाषी हैं वे आपको मस्तक झुकाकर नमस्कार करते हुए उसके उपायभूत―सम्यग्दर्शन, सम्यग्ज्ञान और सम्यक्चारित्र की उपासना करते है ।।64।।

“Oh Lord, the Digambara monks, who wish to attain liberation, bow their heads in reverence and, with full devotion, worship the right path consisting of right perception, right knowledge, and right conduct.” (Verse 64)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 65

महायोगिन् नमस्तुभ्यं महाप्रज्ञ नमोऽस्तु ते । नमो महात्मने तुभ्यं नमः ‘स्तात्ते महये ।।65।।

हे देव, आप महायोगी हैं―ध्यानी हैं अत: आपको नमस्कार हो, आप महाबुद्धिमान् हैं अत: आपको नमस्कार हो, आप महात्मा हैं अत: आपको नमस्कार हो, आप जगत्त्रय के रक्षक और बड़ी-बड़ी ऋद्धियों के धारक हैं अत: आपको नमस्कार हो ।।65।।

“Oh Lord, you are the great yogi — a meditator, and so we bow to you. You are extremely wise, and so we bow to you. You are the great soul, and so we bow to you. You are the protector of the three worlds and the possessor of great powers, and so we bow to you.” (Verse 65)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 66

 नमोऽवधिजुषे तुभ्यं नमो देशावधित्विषे । परमावधये तुभ्यं नमः सर्वात्रधिस्पृशे ।।६६।।

हे देव, आप देशावधि, परमावधि और सर्वावधिरूप अवधिज्ञान को धारण करने वाले हैं अत: आपको नमस्कार हो ।।66।।

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 67

 कोष्ठबुद्धे नमस्तुभ्यं नमस्ते ‘बीजबुद्धये । पदानुसारिन् संमिनश्रोतस्तुभ्यं नमो नमः ॥६७

हे देव, आप कोष्ठबुद्धि नामक ऋद्धि को धारण करने वाले हैं अर्थात् जिस प्रकार कोठे में अनेक प्रकार के धान्य भर रहते है उसी प्रकार आपके हृदय में भी अनेक पदार्थों का ज्ञान भरा हुआ है, अत: आपको नमस्कार हो । आप बीजबुद्धि नामक ऋद्धि से सहित हैं अर्थात् जिस प्रकार उत्तम जमीन में बोया हुआ एक भी बीज अनेक फल उत्पन्न कर देता है उसी प्रकार आप भी आगम के बीजरूप एक दो पदों को ग्रहण कर अनेक प्रकार के ज्ञान को प्रकट कर देते हैं इसलिए आपको नमस्कार हो । आप पदानुसारी ऋद्धि को धारण करने वाले हैं अर्थात् आगम के आदि, मध्य, अंत को अथवा जहाँ-कहीं से भी एक पदकों सुनकर भी समस्त आगम को जान लेते है अत: आपको नमस्कार हो । आप संभिन्नश्रोतृ ऋद्धि को धारण करने वाले हैं अर्थात् आप नौ योजन चौड़े और बारह योजन लंबे क्षेत्र में फैले हुए चक्रवर्ती के कटकसंबंधी समस्त मनुष्य और तिर्यंचों के अक्षरात्मक तथा अनक्षरात्मक मिले हुए शब्दों को एक साथ ग्रहण कर सकते हैं अत: आपको बार-बार नमस्कार हो ।।67।। 

Oh Lord, you possess the miraculous power of ‘Koshthabuddhi’ (storage of knowledge), meaning just as various grains are stored in a granary, your heart holds the knowledge of various substances. Therefore, we bow to you. You are endowed with the miraculous power of ‘Beejabuddhi’ (seed-like knowledge), meaning just as a single seed planted in fertile soil produces multiple fruits, you, by receiving a few words from the scriptures, manifest various types of knowledge. Therefore, we bow to you. You possess the miraculous power of ‘Padanusari’ (following the path of words), meaning by hearing even a single verse from the beginning, middle, or end of the scriptures, you come to know the entire scripture. Therefore, we bow to you. You also possess the miraculous power of ‘Sambhinnashrotu’ (divine hearing), meaning you can hear and grasp the combined words of humans and animals across a vast area, such as the entire territory of a Chakravarti king spanning nine yojanas in width and twelve yojanas in length. Therefore, we repeatedly bow to you.” (Verse 67)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 68

नमोऽस्कृखुमसे तुभ्यं नमस्ते विपुलात्मने । नमः प्रत्येकबुद्धाय स्वयंबुद्धाय है नमः ॥६८॥

आप ऋजुमति और विपुलमति नामक दोनों प्रकार के मनःपर्ययज्ञान से सहित हैं अत: आपको नमस्कार हो । आप प्रत्येक बुद्ध हैं इसलिए आपको नमस्कार हो तथा आप स्वयंबुद्ध हैं इसलिए आपको नमस्कार हो ।।68।। 

“You are endowed with both types of mental telepathy knowledge, namely Rijumati (direct knowledge) and Vipulamati (vast knowledge). Therefore, we bow to you. You are the Buddha of all beings, and so we bow to you. You are self-enlightened, and so we bow to you.” (Verse 68)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 69

अभिन्नदशपूर्वित्वात् प्राप्तपूजाय ते नमः । नमस्ते पूर्वविद्यानां विश्वासां पारहश्वने ॥६९॥

हे स्वामिन् दशपूर्वों का पूर्ण ज्ञान होने से आप जगत् में पूज्यता को प्राप्त हुए हैं अत: आपको नमस्कार हो । इसके सिवाय आप समस्त पूर्व विद्याओं के पारगामी हैं अत: आपको नमस्कार हो ।।69।। 

“Oh Lord, by possessing complete knowledge of the ten Purvas, you have attained reverence in the world. Therefore, we bow to you. In addition, you have transcended all the ancient sciences. Therefore, we bow to you.” (Verse 69)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 70

दीसोद्यतपसे तुभ्यं नमस्तप्तमहातपः । नमो घोरगुणब्रह्मचारिणे घोरतेजसे ॥७०॥

 हे नाथ, आप पक्षोपवास, मासोपवास आदि कठिन तपस्याएँ करते हैं, आतापनादि योग लगाकर दीर्घकाल तक कठिन-कठिन तप तपते हैं । अनेक गुणों से सहित अखंड ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करते हैं और अत्यंत तेजस्वी है अत: आपको नमस्कार हो ।।70।।

 Oh Lord, you undertake difficult austerities such as fasting, periodic fasting, and other severe penances. By practicing intense yogic discipline like Tapana (heat) for long periods, you observe unwavering celibacy, full of countless virtues, and are extremely radiant. Therefore, we bow to you.” (Verse 70)

श्लोक 51 से 60 गौतम की स्तुति

गौतम महायोगी और संघाधिपति हैं। वे उत्कृष्ट वाणी जानते हैं। नाम “गौतम” सार्थक (उत्कृष्ट वाणी जानने वाला)। इंद्रभूति (विभूति प्राप्त), और बुद्ध कहलाते हैं। उनकी ज्ञान-ज्योति अनोखी है। उनकी दीपिका संसार प्रकाशित करती है। उनके वचन मिथ्यात्व नष्ट करते हैं। उनकी प्रज्ञा नदी-सी है, द्वादशांग जहाज। उन्होंने श्रुतज्ञान अवतरित किया। वे दो ज्ञानों से श्रुतकेवली हैं।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 2- Shlok 51 to 50

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 51

 स्वामामनन्ति मुनयो योगिनामधियोगिनम् । त्वां गण्यं गणनातीतगुणं गणधरं विदुः ॥५१॥

हे नाथ, बड़े-बड़े मुनि भी यह मानते हैं कि आप योगियों में महायोगी हैं, प्रसिद्ध हैं, असंख्यात गुणों के धारक हैं तथा संघ के अधिपति-गणधर हैं ।।51।।

“Oh Lord, even the great monks believe that you are the greatest among yogis, renowned, the possessor of countless virtues, and the leader of the community—Ganadhar.” (Verse 51)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 52

गोतमा ‘गौ प्रकृष्टा स्यात् सा च सर्वज्ञमारती । तां बेस्सि तामभीषे च त्वमतो गौतमो मतः ॥५२॥

उत्कष्ट वाणी को गौतम कहते हैं और वह उत्कृष्ट वाणी सर्वज्ञ-तीर्थंकर की दिव्य ध्वनि ही हो सकती है उसे आप जानते हैं अथवा उसका अध्ययन करते हैं इसलिए आप गौतम माने गये है अर्थात् आपका यह नाम सार्थक है (श्रेष्ठा गौ:, गोतमा, तामधीते वेद वा गौतम: ‘तदधीते वेद वा’ इत्यण्प्रत्ययः) ।।52।।

“The excellent speech is called ‘Gautam,’ and that supreme speech can only be the divine voice of the omniscient Tirthankara. Since you know it and study it, you are considered Gautam, and thus, your name is meaningful.” (Verse 52)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 53

गोतमादागतो देवः स्वर्गाश्राद् गौतमो मतः । तेन प्रोक्तमधीयानस्त्वं चासौ गौतमश्रुतिः ॥५३॥

अथवा यों समझिए कि भगवान् वर्धमान स्वामी, गोतम अर्थात् उत्तम सोलहवें स्वर्ग से अवतीर्ण हुए हैं इसलिए वर्धमान स्वामी को गौतम कहते हैं इन गौतम अर्थात् वर्धमान स्वामी द्वारा कही हुई दिव्यध्वनि को आप पढ़ते हैं, जानते हैं इसलिए लोग आपको गौतम कहते हैं । (गोतमादागत: गौतम: ‘तत आगत:’ इत्यण्, गौतमेन प्रोक्तमिति गौतमम्, गौतमम् अधीते वेद वा गौतम:) ।।53।।

“Alternatively, you may understand that Lord Vardhman Swami, Gautam, descended from the highest sixteen heavens. Therefore, Vardhman Swami is called Gautam. The divine voice spoken by this Gautam, that is, Vardhman Swami, is what you read and understand. That is why people call you Gautam.” (Gautamadāgatah Gautam: ‘Tat āgat:’ ity aṇ, Gautamena proktam iti Gautamam, Gautamam adhīte ved vā Gautam:) (Verse 53)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 54

 इन्द्रेण प्राप्तपूजर्द्धिरिन्द्रभूतिस्त्वमिष्यसे । साक्षात् सर्वज्ञपुत्रस्त्वमाप्तसंज्ञानकण्ठिकः ॥५४॥

आपने इंद्र के द्वारा की हुई अर्चारूपी विभूति को प्राप्त किया है इसलिए आप इंद्रभूति कहलाते हैं । तथा आपको सम्यग्ज्ञानरूपी कंठाभरण प्राप्त हुआ है अत: आप सर्वज्ञदेव श्री वर्धमान स्वामी के साक्षात् पुत्र के समान हैं ।।54।।

You have received the divine glory in the form of worship bestowed by Indra, which is why you are called Indrabhuti. Moreover, you have received the ornament of right knowledge in the form of a necklace, thus you are like the very son of the omniscient Lord Vardhman Swami.” (Verse 54)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 55

चतुर्भिश्रामलैबोधैरबुद्धस्त्वं जगद् यतः । प्रज्ञापारमितं बुद्धं त्वां निराहुरतो बुधाः ॥५५॥

 हे देव, आपने अपने चार निर्मल ज्ञानों के द्वारा समस्त संसार को जान लिया है तथा आप बुद्धि के पार को प्राप्त हुए हैं इसलिए विद्वान् लोग आपको बुद्ध कहते हैं ।।55।।

“Oh Lord, through your four pure types of knowledge, you have comprehended the entire world, and you have attained the ultimate state of intellect. Therefore, learned individuals refer to you as Buddha.” (Verse 55)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 56

 “पारेतमः परं “ज्योतिस्त्वामदृष्ट्रा दुरासदम् । ज्योतिर्मयः प्रदीपोऽसि त्वं तस्यामिप्रकाशनात् ॥ ५६॥

हे देव, आपको बिना देखे अज्ञानांधकार से परे रहने वाली केवलज्ञानरूपी उत्कृष्ट ज्योति का प्राप्त होना अत्यंत कठिन है, आप उस ज्योति के प्रकाश होने से ज्योतिस्वरूप अनोखे दीपक हैं ।।56।। 

Oh Lord, it is extremely difficult to attain the supreme light of knowledge, which is beyond ignorance and darkness. By the radiance of that light, you are the unique lamp, embodying the form of light itself.” (Verse 56)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 57

श्रुतदेव्याहितस्मैणप्रयक्षा बोधदीपिका । तनैषा प्रज्वलत्युच्चैद्योतयन्ती जगद्गृहम् ॥५७॥

हे स्वामिन् श्रुत देवता के द्वारा वीरूप को धारण करने वाली आपकी सम्यग्ज्ञानरूपी दीपिका जगत्रूपी घर को प्रकाशित करती हुई अत्यंत शोभायमान हो रही है ।।57।।

“Oh Lord, the lamp of right knowledge, which you carry in the form of the enlightened wisdom bestowed by the deity of scripture, is beautifully illuminating the world, the home of all beings.” (Verse 57)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 58

 तव वाक्प्रकरो’ दिग्यो विधुन्वन् जगतां तमः । प्रकाशयति सन्मार्ग स्वेरिव करोस्करः ॥५८॥

आपके दिव्य वचनों का समूह लोगों के मिथ्यात्व रूपी अंधकार को नष्ट करता हुआ सूर्य की किरणों के समूह के समान समीचीन मार्ग का प्रकाश करता है ।।58।। 

“Your divine words, like a collection of rays of the sun, dispel the darkness of falsehood and illuminate the correct path, just as the sun’s rays reveal the way.” (Verse 58)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 59

 तव लोकातिगा प्रशा विद्यानां पारश्श्वरी । श्रुतस्कन्धमहासिन्धोरमजन् यानपात्रताम् ॥५९॥

हे देव, आपकी यह प्रज्ञा लोक में सबसे चढ़ी-नदी है, समस्त विद्याओं में पारंगत है और द्वादशांगरूपी समुद्र में जहाजपने को प्राप्त हैं―अर्थात् जहाज का काम देती है ।।59।।

“Oh Lord, your wisdom is like the highest river in the world, accomplished in all sciences, and it serves as a ship that helps cross the ocean of the twelve branches of knowledge.” (Verse 59)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 60

स्वयात्रतारिता तुङ्गान्महावीरहिमाचलात् । श्रुतामरसरित्पुण्या निर्भुजानाखिलं रजः ॥६०॥

हे देव, आपने अत्यंत ऊँचे वर्धमान स्वामीरूप हिमालय से उस श्रुतज्ञानरूपी गंगा नदी का अवतरण कराया है जो कि स्वयं पवित्र है और समस्त पापरूपी रज को धोने वाली है ।।60।।

“Oh Lord, you have brought forth the river of scriptural knowledge, which is like the Ganga, from the lofty Vardhman Swami, resembling the Himalayas. This river is inherently pure and is capable of washing away all sins, symbolized as dust.” (Verse 60)

श्रेणिक का प्रश्न सरल पर गंभीर और तत्त्वपूर्ण है। भरत और सगर ने भी यही पूछा था। श्रेणिक ने परंपरा सुशोभित की। वे प्रश्नकर्ता, महावीर उत्तरदाता, और मुनि श्रोता हैं। गौतम पुराण कहें। मुनि गौतम की स्तुति करने लगे। उनकी स्तुति आश्चर्यकारी है। वे चौदह पूर्वों के पारगामी हैं। उनकी कीर्ति चंद्र-सी है।

English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 2- Shlok 41 to 50

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 41

अहो प्रसजगम्भीरः प्रश्नोऽयं विश्वगोचरः । क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञसन्मार्ग कालसचारिताश्रयः ॥४१॥

अहो श्रेणिक, तुम्हारा यह प्रश्न सरल होने पर भी गंभीर है, सब तत्त्वों से भरा हुआ है तथा क्षेत्र, क्षेत्र को जानने वाला आत्मा सन्मार्ग, काल और सत्पुरुषों का चरित्र आदि का आधारभूत है ।।41।।

Oh Shrenik, though your question appears simple, it is profound. It is filled with all elements and is fundamental to understanding the field (kṣetra), the soul that knows the field (kṣetrajña), the righteous path, time, and the character of noble individuals.”

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 42-43

इदमेत्र युगस्थादौ पप्रच्छ मरतः पुरुम् । ततोऽनुयुयुजे सम्राट् सागरोऽजितमच्युतम् ॥४२॥

 इति प्रमाणभूतेयं वक्तृश्रोतॄपरम्परा । त्वयाद्यालङ्कृता श्रीमन् ! पृच्छतेमं महाधियम् ॥४३॥

हे बुद्धिमान् श्रेणिक, युग के आदि में भरत चक्रवर्ती ने भगवान् आदिनाथ से यही प्रश्न पूछा था, और यही प्रश्न चक्रवर्ती सगर ने भगवान् अजितनाथ से पूछा था । आज तुमने भी अत्यंत बुद्धिमान् गौतम गणधर से यही प्रश्न पूछा है । इस प्रकार वक्ता और श्रोताओं की जो प्रमाणभूत-सच्ची परंपरा चली आ रही थी उसे तुमने सुशोभित कर दिया है ।।42-43।। 

“Oh wise Shrenik, at the beginning of the age, Bharat Chakravarti asked this very question to Lord Adinath, and the same question was asked by Chakravarti Sagar to Lord Ajitnath. Today, you too have asked this profound question to the supremely wise Gautam Ganadhar. In this way, you have honored and enriched the authentic tradition of true speakers and listeners that has been continuing over time.” (Verses 42–43)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 44

 स्वं प्रष्टा भगवान् वक्ता सहशुश्रूषवो वयम् । सामग्री नेहशी जातु जाता नैत्र जनिष्यते ॥४४॥

हे श्रेणिक, तुम प्रश्न करने वाले, भगवान् महावीर स्वामी उत्तर देने वाले और हम सब तुम्हारे साथ सुनने वाले हैं । हे राजन् ऐसी सामग्री पहले न तो कभी मिली है और न कभी मिलेगी ।।44।।

Oh Shrenik, you are the one asking the question, Lord Mahavir Swami is the one answering, and all of us are here listening along with you. O King, such an extraordinary gathering has never occurred before and will never occur again.” (Verse 44)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 45

 तस्मात् पुण्यकथामेनां शृणुयाम समं वयम् । प्रज्ञापारमितो देत्रो वक्तुमुत्सहतामयम् ॥४५॥

इसलिए पूर्ण श्रुतज्ञान को धारण करने वाले ये गौतम स्वामी इस पुण्य कथा का कहना प्रारंभ करें और हम सब तुम्हारे साथ सुनें ।।45।।

“Therefore, Gautam Swami, who possesses complete scriptural knowledge, should begin narrating this virtuous story, and all of us shall listen to it along with you.” (Verse 45)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 46

 इति प्रोत्साह्य तं धर्मे ते समाधानचक्षुषः । ततो गणधरस्तोत्रं पेठुरित्युच्चकैस्तदा ॥४६॥

इस प्रकार वे सब ऋषिजन महाराज श्रेणिक को धर्म में उत्साहित कर एकाग्रचित्त हो उच्च स्वर से गणधर स्वामी का नीचे लिखा हुआ स्तोत्र पढ़ने लगे ।।46।।

“Thus, all those sages, inspiring King Shrenik towards righteousness, became focused and began to recite in a loud voice the following hymn composed by Ganadhar Swami.” (Verse 46)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 47

स्त्रां प्रत्यक्षविदां बोधैरप्यबुद्धमहोदयम् । प्रत्यक्षस्तत्रनैः स्तोतुं वयं चाद्य किलोधताः ॥४७॥  

हे स्वामिन्, यद्यपि प्रत्यक्ष ज्ञान के धारक बड़े-बडे मुनि भी अपने ज्ञानद्वारा आपके अभ्युदय को नहीं जान सके हैं तथापि हम लोग प्रत्यक्ष स्तोत्रों के द्वारा आपकी स्तुति करने के लिए तत्पर हुए हैं सो यह एक आश्चर्य की ही बात है ।।47।।

“Oh Lord, even the great monks, who possess direct knowledge, have been unable to comprehend the entirety of your glory through their knowledge. Yet, we are ready to praise you through direct hymns. This, indeed, is a matter of great wonder.” (Verse 47)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 48

चतुर्दशमहाविद्यास्थानाकूपारपारगम् । त्वामृषे ! स्तोतुकामाः स्मः केवलं मक्तिचोदिताः ॥४८।

हे ऋषे, आप चौदह महाविद्या (चौदह पूर्व) रूपी सागर के पारगामी है अत: हम लोग मात्र भक्ति से प्रेरित होकर ही आपकी स्तुति करना चाहते हैं ।।48।। 

“Oh Sage, you have crossed the vast ocean of the fourteen great sciences (the fourteen Purvas). Therefore, we, inspired solely by devotion, wish to sing your praises.” (Verse 48)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 49

मगवन् मन्यसार्थस्य नेतुस्तत्र शिवाकरम् । पताक्रेचोच्छिता भाति कीर्तिरेषा विधूज्ज्वला ॥४९॥

हे भगवन्, आप भव्य जीवों को मोक्षस्थान की प्राप्ति कराने वाले है, आपकी चंद्रमा के समान उज्ज्वल कीर्ति फहराती हुई पता का के समान शोभायमान हो रही है ।।49।।

“Oh Lord, you are the one who leads noble souls to the state of liberation. Your radiant glory, like the bright moon, shines brilliantly like a fluttering banner.” (Verse 49)

श्लोक ( Shlok ) 50

“आलवालीकृताम्भोधिवलया कीर्तिवल्लरी । जगनाडीतरोरग्रमाकामति तवोच्छिखा ॥५०॥

देव, चारों ओर फैले हुए समुद्र को जिसने अपना आलबाल (क्यारी) बनाया है ऐसी बढ़ती हुई आपकी यह कीर्तिरूपी लता इस समय त्रसनाड़ीरूपी वृक्ष के अग्रभाग पर आक्रमण कर रही हैं―उस पर आरूढ़ हुआ चाहती है ।।50।।

O Lord, your ever-growing vine of glory, which has made the vast oceans its garden, is now advancing towards the foremost branches of the tree of worldly existence, seeking to climb upon it.” (Verse 50)
