English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 5- Shlok 72 to 81
“If, as you claim, the soul is produced from the combination of the four elements—earth, water, fire, and air—then a soul should also arise in the cooking pot placed over the fire for preparing food, because the same combination of the four elements exists there as well.” ( 72)
“In this way, it is established that the doctrine of the materialists is fraught with numerous flaws. Therefore, understand with certainty that the views of the materialists are nothing but the ramblings of fools and have no substance whatsoever.” ( 73)
“After this, Swayambudha said to the idealist (Vijnanavadi) that you consider this world to be merely consciousness—you do not believe in the existence of any substance beyond consciousness. However, consciousness alone cannot prove consciousness, because according to your view, both the goal and the means become one—the goal is consciousness, and the means is also consciousness. In such a situation, how can the nature of reality be determined?” (74)
There is also one point to consider: in the world, the realization of external objects is achieved only through the use of sentences. If sentences are not used, then no object can be realized, and in such a state, the functioning of the world would come to a halt. If those sentences are considered distinct from consciousness, then non-duality of consciousness cannot be established while using sentences. If you argue that those sentences are also consciousness, then tell me, by what means have you established this non-duality of consciousness—this understanding that “the world is nothing but consciousness”?
Apart from this, another point to ponder is that when you accept only pure, undivided consciousness, then how can the distinction between the perceiver and the perceived be established?
Explanation: Consciousness knows objects, and hence it is called the perceiver, while the objects are called the perceived. If you do not accept the existence of perceived objects, then how can the perceiver, or the knowing consciousness, be established? If you accept the existence of the perceived, then the non-duality of consciousness is contradicted.
(Shlokas 75–76)
The appearance of knowledge does not cease in the presence of objects like a pot or a vessel; that is, knowledge can know objects such as pots and vessels as long as they exist. If objects like pots and vessels do not exist, then knowledge of them cannot exist either. Is there ever a source of light that illuminates without any objects to illuminate? No, it cannot happen. In the same way, if you accept knowledge, you must also accept the objects related to that knowledge.(Shloka 77)
We ask: In your view, does one science accept another science or not? If it does, then the science you accept lacks nirālamba (independence), meaning that it is not independent. It has accepted the second science, so the distinction between the perceiver and the perceived has been established, which obstructs the non-duality of consciousness.
If you say that one science does not accept another science, then what reason will you give for proving the second science, which is another form of creation? Perhaps you will try to prove it by inference. In that case, the existence of external objects like pots and vessels will definitely be established, because once you accept inference as a valid method, where does the non-duality of consciousness stand? In the absence of non-duality, you will necessarily have to accept the external objects, such as pots and vessels, that are subjects of inference.(Shlokas 78-79)
If this world is solely composed of consciousness (Vijnana), then all sentences and knowledge will become false. This is because if external objects like pots and vessels do not exist, how can these sentences and knowledge be true, and how can the distinction between truth and falsehood exist?(Shloka 80)
When you use instruments (means) and so on, you must also accept an objective distinct from the instrument, and that objective will be external objects like pots and vessels. In this way, the coexistence of external objects beyond consciousness is established. Therefore, your philosophy of non-duality of consciousness sounds appealing only like the speech of children when heard.(Shloka 81)
