Summary
The Shlok 22 to 31 from the Ādi Purāṇa by Acharya Jinasena describe the consequences of sinful actions and the structure of hell, as per Jain cosmology. Here is a summary:
- Sins Leading to Hell (Shlokas 22-27):
Beings who engage in violence, lying, stealing, adultery, alcohol consumption, false beliefs, cruelty, destructive thoughts, and heartlessness toward living beings are destined for hell. Those who accumulate excessive material possessions, oppose Dharma (righteousness), find satisfaction in Adharma (unrighteousness), slander monks, harbor envy, and unjustly anger ascetics also fall into hell. Additionally, consuming honey, meat, and supporting such practices, as well as keeping violent animals like dogs and cats, contribute to their sinful burden. Hell is described as the realm where the consequences of these evil deeds are experienced. - Beings Destined for Hell (Shloka 28):
Cruel aquatic and land-dwelling creatures, snakes, reptiles, sinful women, and vicious birds are among those who descend into hell. - Layers of Hell (Shlokas 29-30):
Hell is divided into seven layers, each progressively deeper. Non-violent five-sensed beings go to the first layer (Dharmanamaka), reptiles to the second, birds to the third, snakes to the fourth, lions to the fifth, women to the sixth, and sinful humans and flies to the seventh layer. - Names of the Seven Layers (Shloka 31):
The seven layers of hell are named Ratnaprabha, Sharkaraprabha, Balukaprabha, Pankaprabha, Dhoomaprabha, Tamahprabha, and Mahatamahprabha, each situated one below the other in descending order.
These verses emphasize the Jain principles of non-violence (ahimsa), truthfulness, and detachment, warning against sinful behaviors and their karmic consequences, which lead to rebirth in hell. The detailed description of hell’s layers reflects the structured and systematic nature of Jain cosmology.
