English translation of Ādi purāṇa parv 10 – Shlok 32 to 41
“Dharma, Vansha, Shila (Megha), Anjana, Arishta, Maghavi, and Maghavi are the alternate names for the seven layers of hell in their respective order.” (32)
“In those layers of hell, beings are born in repulsive places, hanging downward like honeybee hives, with their faces facing downwards. Indeed, how can sinful beings ever attain progress?” (33)
“Due to the rise of sinful karma, those beings form complete bodies within an instant, characterized by a foul stench, repulsiveness, an unbearable appearance, and a grotesque form.” (34)
“Just as leaves fall to the ground when their attachment to the branch is severed, similarly, hellish beings, upon completing the formation of their bodies, fall from their place of birth onto the blazing and unbearably painful ground of hell.” (35)
“The ground of hell is filled with countless sharp weapons. When the hellish beings fall upon these pointed weapons, all their joints are shattered. Tormented by this immense pain, the sinful beings cry out and wail in agony.” (36)
“Tormented by the unbearable heat of the ground, the hellish beings writhe in agony, leaping like sesame seeds thrown into a hot furnace, only to fall back down again.” (37)
“Upon landing there, the extremely wrathful hellish beings unleash terrifying threats and cut the bodies of the newly arrived hellish beings into pieces with sharp weapons.” (38)
“Just as water, when struck by a stick, scatters into droplets and then reunites in an instant, similarly, the bodies of the hellish beings are shattered into fragments by weapon strikes, scattering everywhere, only to reunite in an instant.” (39)
“Due to their clairvoyance (Avadhijnana), the hellish beings recall events from their past lives. With this awareness, they reveal their former enmities to one another and continue to inflict punishment upon each other.” (40)
“In the first three layers of hell, extremely fierce Asurakumara deities arrive and remind the hellish beings of their past-life enmities, constantly inciting them to fight among themselves.” (41)
Summary of Shlokas 32–41 from Ādi Purāṇa Parv 10 by Acharya Jinasena:
- Alternate Names of Hell’s Layers (Shloka 32):
The seven layers of hell are also known by alternate names: Dharma, Vansha, Shila (Megha), Anjana, Arishta, Maghavi, and Maghavi, listed in order from the first to the seventh layer. - Birth of Hellish Beings (Shloka 33):
Sinful beings are born in hell in repulsive places, hanging downward like honeybee hives, with their faces facing downwards. Their sinful nature makes progress or upliftment impossible. - Formation of Grotesque Bodies (Shloka 34):
Due to their sinful karma, these beings instantly develop foul-smelling, repulsive, and grotesque bodies that are unbearable to look at. - Fall onto Hell’s Blazing Ground (Shloka 35):
Like leaves falling from a tree, hellish beings, upon completing their body formation, fall onto the scorching and unbearably painful ground of hell. - Torment by Sharp Weapons (Shloka 36):
The ground of hell is covered with sharp weapons. When the beings fall onto these weapons, their joints are shattered, causing them to cry out in agony. - Agony from Hell’s Heat (Shloka 37):
The unbearable heat of hell’s ground torments the beings, making them leap like sesame seeds in a hot furnace, only to fall back down repeatedly. - Mutilation by Wrathful Hellish Beings (Shloka 38):
Upon arrival, the beings are attacked by wrathful hellish inhabitants who cut their bodies into pieces with sharp weapons. - Reunion of Shattered Bodies (Shloka 39):
Just as scattered water droplets reunite, the bodies of the hellish beings, shattered by weapons, quickly reassemble, only to be torn apart again. - Recollection of Past Enmities (Shloka 40):
Due to clairvoyance (Avadhijnana), the beings recall their past-life enmities and inflict punishment on each other based on these memories. - Incitement to Fight by Asurakumaras (Shloka 41):
In the first three layers of hell, fierce Asurakumara deities remind the beings of their past enmities and incite them to fight among themselves.
These verses vividly describe the torments of hell, emphasizing the consequences of sinful actions. The beings suffer physical and mental agony, their bodies repeatedly destroyed and reassembled, while their past-life enmities lead to endless conflict. The detailed imagery serves as a warning against immoral behavior and highlights the karmic retribution in Jain cosmology.
