श्लोक 21

२१) सकलपुरुषधर्मभ्रंशकार्यत्र जन्मन्यधिकमधिकमग्रे यत्परं दुःखहेतुः । तदपि न यदि मद्यं त्यज्यते बुद्धिमद्भिः स्वहितमिह किमन्यत्कर्म धर्माय कार्यम् ।।२१ ।।

टीका – यन्मद्यम् । अत्र जन्मनि। सकलपुरुषधर्मभ्रंशकारि सकलाः ये पुरुषधर्माः तेषां धर्मार्थकामानां भ्रंशकारि विलयकरणशीलम् । यन्मद्यम्। अग्रे परजन्मनि। अधिकमधिकं परं दुःखहेतुः कारणम्। तदपि। बुद्धिमद्भिः पण्डितैः । मां यदि न त्यज्यते। इह लोके स्वहितं आत्महितम्। धर्माय अन्यत्किं कार्यं करणीयम् ॥२१॥

अर्थ – जो मद्य इस जन्ममें समस्त पुरुषार्थों (धर्म, अर्थ और काम) का नाश करनेवाला है और आगेके जन्ममें अत्यधिक दुःखका कारण है उस मद्यको यदि बुद्धिमान् मनुष्य नहीं छोड़ते तो फिर यहाँ लोकमें धर्मके निमित्त अपने लिये हितकारक दूसरा कौन-सा काम करनेके योग्य है? कोई नहीं। अर्थात् मद्यपायी मनुष्य ऐसा कोई भी पुण्य कार्य नहीं कर सकता है जो उसके लिये आत्महितकारक हो ।।

विशेषार्थ – शराबी मनुष्य न तो धर्मकार्य कर सकता है, न अर्थोपार्जन कर सकता है, और न यथेच्छ भोग भी भोग सकता है; इस प्रकार वह इस भवमें तीनों पुरुषार्थोसे रहित होता है। तथा परभवमें वह मद्यजनित दोषोंसे नरकादि दुर्गतियोंमें पड़कर असह्य दुखको भी भागता है। इसी विचारसे बुद्धिमान् मनुष्य उसका सदाके लिये परित्याग करते हैं ।। २१ ।।

Verse 21 – English Translation

sakalapuruṣadharmabhraṁśakāryatra janmany
adhikamadhikam agre yat paraṁ duḥkhahetuḥ |
tad api na yadi madyaṁ tyajyate buddhimadbhiḥ
svahitam iha kim anyat karma dharmāya kāryam || 21 ||

That intoxicant (alcohol), which in this very life destroys all the aims of human existence—dharma (righteousness), artha (prosperity), and kāma (rightful pleasure)—and which in future births becomes an even greater cause of suffering,
if such intoxicants are not renounced by the wise,
then what other act remains in this world that can truly serve one’s own welfare or support righteousness?

In other words, for a person who consumes intoxicants, no virtuous action remains that can truly bring benefit to the self.

Explanation (Expanded Meaning)

A person addicted to alcohol is incapable of practicing dharma, earning wealth through righteous means, or enjoying pleasures in a balanced and moral way. Thus, in this very life, all three puruṣārthas (goals of life) are destroyed. Moreover, in future births, such indulgence leads to intense suffering and miserable states of existence due to the karmic consequences of intoxication.

Therefore, wise and discerning individuals completely renounce intoxicants, understanding that indulgence in them obstructs both worldly well-being and spiritual progress.

श्लोक 22

२२) आस्तामेदद्यदिह जननीं वल्लभां मन्यमाना निन्द्याश्चेष्टा विदधति जना निस्त्रपाः पीतमद्याः । तत्राधिक्यं पथि निपतिता यत्किरत्सारमेयाद् -वक्त्रे मूत्रं मधुरमधुरं भाषमाणाः पिबन्ति ।।२२ ।।

टीका-इह लोके। पीतमद्याः जनाः निन्द्याश्चेष्टा विदधति कुर्वन्ति। यत् जननीं वल्लभां मन्यमानाः जनाः। एतत् आस्तां दूरे तिष्ठतु। तत्र मद्यपाने। अन्यत् आधिक्यं वर्तते। पथि मार्गे निपतितां (?) जनानां। वक्त्रे मुखे। सारमेयात्किरन्मूत्रम् । मधुरमधुरं मिष्टं मिष्टं भाषमाणाः पिबन्ति ॥२२॥

अर्थ – मद्यपायी जन निर्लज्ज होकर यहाँ जो माताको पत्नी समझकर निन्दनीय चेष्टायें (सम्भोग आदि) करते हैं यह तो दूर रहे। किन्तु अधिक खेदकी बात तो यह है कि मार्गमें पड़े हुए उनके मुखमें कुत्ता मूत देता है और वे उसे अतिशय मधुर बतलाकर पीते रहते हैं।। २२ ।।

Verse 22 – Transliteration

āstām etad yad iha jananīṃ vallabhāṃ manyamānā
nindyāś ceṣṭā vidadhati janā nistra pāḥ pītamadyāḥ |
tatrādhikyaṃ pathi nipatitā yat kirat sārameyād–
vaktre mūtraṃ madhuramadhuraṃ bhāṣamāṇāḥ pibanti || 22 ||

English Translation

Let alone the fact that intoxicated people, having lost all shame,
commit disgraceful acts here in the world— even mistaking their own mother for a beloved woman.

What is still more deplorable is this:
when they lie fallen on the road,a dog urinates into their mouth, and they, speaking of it as “sweet, sweet,” drink it without disgust.

Meaning (Expanded Explanation)

Drunkards, having lost all sense of shame and discrimination, perform shameful acts—so much so that they may even mistake their own mother for a beloved woman. This itself is dreadful. But even worse is that when such intoxicated people fall helpless on the roadside, a dog urinates into their mouth, and they foolishly describe it as sweet and drink it.

Such is the extreme degradation caused by intoxication.
This verse powerfully exposes the depth of moral and spiritual ruin brought about by alcohol.

श्लोक 19

१९) बीभत्सु प्राणिघातोद्भवमशुचि कृमिस्थानमश्लाघ्यमूलं हस्तेनाक्ष्णापि शक्यं यदिह न महतां स्प्रष्टुमालोकितुं च । तन्मांसं भक्ष्यमेतद्वचनमपि सतां गर्हितं यस्य साक्षात् पापं तस्यात्र पुंसो भुवि भवति कियत्का गतिर्वा न विद्मः ।।१९ ।।

टीका – यन्मांसं बीभत्सु भयानकं घृणास्पदम्। यन्मांसं प्राणिघातोद्भवम्। यन्मांसं अशुचि अपवित्रम्। यन्मासुं कृमिस्थानम्। यन्मासं अश्लाघ्यमूलम्। इह लोके। महतां पुरुषाणां हस्तेन स्प्रष्टुं स्पर्शितुं शक्यं न। महतां अक्ष्णापि आलोकितुं न। तत् तस्मात्कारणात्। भक्ष्यमेतद्वचनमपि सतां गर्हितं निन्द्यं भवति। अत्र भुवि पृथिव्याम्। यस्य पुरुषस्य मांसं भक्ष्यं भवति तस्य मांसभक्षकस्य पुंसः । साक्षात् केवलम्। कियत्पापं भवति तस्य का गतिर्भवति वयं न विद्मः वयं न जानीमः ॥१९॥

अर्थ- जो मांस घृणाको उत्पन्न करता है, मृग आदि प्राणियोंके घातसे उत्पन्न होता है, अपवित्र है, कृमि आदि क्षुद्र कीड़ोंका स्थान है, जिसकी उत्पत्ति निन्दनीय है, तथा महापुरुष जिसका हाथसे स्पर्श नहीं करते और आंखसे जिसे देखते भी नहीं हैं ‘वह मांस खानेके योग्य है’ ऐसा कहना भी सज्जनोंके लिये निन्दाजनक है। फिर ऐसे अपवित्र मांसको जो पुरूष साक्षात् खाता है उसके लिये यहाँ लोकमें कितना पाप होता है तथा उसकी क्या अवस्था होती है, इस बातको हम नहीं जानते।

विशेषार्थ – मांस चूँकि प्रथम तो मृग आदिक मूक प्राणियोंके वधसे उत्पन्न होता है, दूसरी उसमें असंख्य अन्य त्रस जीव भी उत्पन्न हो जाते हैं जिनकी हिंसा होना अनिवार्य है। इस कारण उसके भक्षणमें हिंसाजनित पापका होना अवश्यंभावी है। अत एव सज्जन पुरूष उसका केवल परित्याग ही नहीं करते, अपितु उसको वे हाथसे स्पर्श करना और आँखसे देखना भी बुरा समझते हैं। मांसभक्षक जीवोंकी दुर्गति अनिवार्य है।।१९ ।।

Verse 19 – English Translation

bībhatsu prāṇighātodbhavam aśuci kṛmisthānam aślāghyamūlaṃ
hastenākṣṇāpi śakyaṃ yad iha na mahatāṃ spraṣṭum ālokituṃ ca |
tan māṃsaṃ bhakṣyam etad-vacanam api satāṃ garhitaṃ yasya sākṣāt
pāpaṃ tasya atra puṃso bhuvi bhavati kiyat kā gatiḥ vā na vidmaḥ || 19 |

“That which is repulsive, born from the killing of living beings, impure,
a dwelling place of worms, and ignoble in origin—
that which even noble souls cannot touch with their hands
nor bear to look at with their eyes—
to declare such flesh as fit for consumption is itself condemned by the virtuous.
Then what can be said of the sin incurred by the person
who actually consumes such flesh,
or of the destiny that awaits him in this world—who can truly know?”

Commentary (Ṭīkā – Explanation)

That flesh which is disgusting and fearsome in nature,
which arises from the killing of living beings,
which is impure and a dwelling place of worms,
and whose very origin is reprehensible—

Such flesh is so detestable that noble and virtuous persons do not even touch it with their hands, nor do they look at it with their eyes.
Therefore, even to say that such flesh is fit to be eaten is condemned by the wise.

In this world, for the person who actually consumes such flesh,
how great is the sin incurred and what kind of future state awaits him—this cannot even be fully comprehended.

Expanded Meaning (Viśeṣārtha)

Meat originates from the violent killing of innocent, voiceless beings such as animals.
Moreover, countless subtle organisms are inevitably generated within it, making its consumption inseparably linked with violence.

For this reason, eating meat inevitably results in grave sin.
Thus, noble and spiritually elevated persons not only renounce eating meat, but also refrain from touching or even looking at it.

Those who consume meat inevitably move toward spiritual degradation and suffering. Their downfall is unavoidable.

श्लोक 20

२०) गतो ज्ञातिः कश्चिद् बहिरपि न यद्येति सहसा शिरो हत्वा हत्वा कलुषितमना रोदिति जनः । परेषामुत्कृत्य प्रकटितमुखं खादति पलं कले रे निर्विण्णा वयमिह भवचित्रचरितैः ।। २० ।।

टीका-कश्चित् ज्ञातिः स्वगोत्री जनः। बहिरपि गतः ग्रामान्तरे गतः। यदि सहसा शीघ्रं न एति आगच्छति। तदा जनः शिरो हत्वा हत्वा रोदिति। किंलक्षणो जनः। कलुषितमनाः। परेषां जीवानां मृगादीनाम्। पलं मांसम्। उत्कृत्य छित्वा छेदयित्वा। प्रकटितमुखं प्रसारितमुखं यथा स्यात्तथा खादति। एवंविधः मूर्खलोकः। रे कले भोः पंचमकाल। इह संसारे। अथ इदानीम् अस्मिन् प्रस्तावे भवच्चरितैः वयं निर्विण्णाः ॥२०॥

अर्थ – यदि कोई अपना सम्बन्धी स्वकीय स्थानसे बाहिर भी जाकर शीघ्र नहीं आता है तो मनुष्य मनमें व्याकुल होता हुआ शिरको बार बार पीटकर रोता है। वही मनुष्य अन्य मृग आदि प्राणियोंके मांसको काटकर अपने मुखको फाड़ता हुआ खाता है। हे कलिकाल! यहाँ हम लोग तेरी इन विचित्र प्रवृत्तियोंसे निर्वेदको प्राप्त हुए है। ।।

विशेषार्थ- जब अपना कोई इष्ट बन्धु कार्यवश कहीं बाहिर जाता है और यदि वह समयपर घर वापिस नहीं आता है तब यह मनुष्य अनिष्टकी आशंकासे व्याकुल होकर शिरको दीवाल आदिसे मारता हुआ रुदन करता है। फिर वही मनुष्य जो अन्य पशु-पक्षियोंको मारकर उनका अपनी माता आदिसे सदाके लिये वियोग कराता हुआ मांसभक्षणमें अनुरक्त होता है, यह इस कलिकालका ही प्रभाव है। कालकी ऐसी प्रवृत्तियोंसे विवेकी जनोंका विरक्त होना स्वाभाविक है।। २० ।।

pareṣām utkṛtya prakaṭita-mukhaṁ khādati palaṁ
kale re nirviṇṇā vayam iha bhava-citra-caritaiḥ || 20 ||

people, with troubled minds, strike their heads again and again
and weep in anguish.

Yet the very same people,
cutting the flesh of other living beings,
opening their mouths wide,
consume it without remorse.

O Kaliyuga!
We grow weary and disheartened
on witnessing such contradictory and disturbing conduct
in this world.

Explanation (Devotional Reflection)

When a beloved family member goes away and does not return on time, the human heart becomes restless with fear and sorrow. One strikes the head in despair and weeps, fearing misfortune. Yet the same person mercilessly kills animals and birds, tearing their flesh and eating it without compassion.

Such behavior reveals a deep contradiction in human conduct. A person grieves intensely for their own loved ones, yet causes unbearable suffering to other living beings by separating them forever from their mothers and families. This cruel contradiction is a sign of the moral decline of Kali Yuga.

Seeing such distorted values and painful conduct of humanity, wise and sensitive souls naturally feel disillusioned and detached from the world. This verse reminds us that true compassion must extend to all living beings, not only to those we call our own.

पद्मनन्दि पंचविंशतिका इस ग्रन्थनामसे ही सूचित होता है कि प्रस्तुत ग्रन्थमें श्रीमुनि पद्मनन्दीके द्वारा रचित पच्चीस विषय समाविष्ट हैं, जो इस प्रकार हैं-

१. धर्मोपदेशामृत

श्लोक 1 -7 | श्लोक 8 -13 | श्लोक 14 | श्लोक 15-16 | श्लोक 17-18

इस अधिकारमें १९८ श्लोक हैं। संसार की आपाधापी में हम अक्सर शरीर और भौतिक वस्तुओं को ही अपना मान बैठते हैं। लेकिन क्या आपने कभी सोचा है कि जब आत्मा इस शरीर को छोड़कर परलोक की लंबी यात्रा पर निकलती है, तब उसके पास संबल क्या होता है? आचार्य श्री मुनि पद्मनन्दी जी ने अपने अमर ग्रंथ ‘पद्मनन्दि-पञ्चविंशतिका’ के प्रथम अधिकार ‘धर्मोपदेशामृत’ में इसी प्रश्न का समाधान दिया है।

१. धर्म का सच्चा वक्ता कौन? (प्रमाणिकता की कसौटी)

आचार्य स्पष्ट करते हैं कि धर्म का उपदेश केवल वही दे सकता है जो सर्वज्ञ और वीतराग हो। संसार में झूठ के केवल दो ही मूल कारण हैं:

1. अज्ञानता: विषय का पूर्ण ज्ञान न होना।
2. कषाय: क्रोध, मान, माया या लोभ के वशीभूत होना।

चूँकि सर्वज्ञ देव इन दोनों दोषों से मुक्त हैं, इसलिए उनकी वाणी ही निर्बाध सुख देने वाले धर्म का वास्तविक प्रमाण है (श्लोक ६)।

२. धर्म: परलोक का ‘पाथेय’

जैसे एक देश से दूसरे देश जाते समय यात्री अपने साथ ‘पाथेय’ (मार्ग में खाने की सामग्री) रखता है ताकि यात्रा सुखद हो, वैसे ही इस लोक से परलोक की लंबी यात्रा का पाथेय ‘धर्म’ है। बिना धर्म के यह यात्रा अत्यंत कष्टकारी हो जाती है।

३. धर्म के दो रूप: व्यवहार और निश्चय

आचार्य ने धर्म को दो दृष्टियों से समझाया है:

धर्म का स्वरूप	आधार और कार्य	फल
व्यवहार धर्म	जीवदया, रत्नत्रय (सम्यग्दर्शन, ज्ञान, चारित्र), १० धर्म।	दुर्गति से रक्षा, मनुष्य एवं देव गति के सुख।
निश्चय धर्म	समस्त संकल्प-विकल्पों से रहित शुद्ध आत्म-परिणति।	अजर-अमर पद, शाश्वत और निराकुल मोक्ष सुख।

महत्वपूर्ण नोट: व्यवहार धर्म केवल तब तक उपादेय (स्वीकार्य) है जब तक वह निश्चय धर्म का साधक बने। यदि कोई केवल सांसारिक सुखों के लिए इसे करता है, तो वह मोक्ष का मार्ग नहीं है।

४. जीवदया: मोक्ष की नसैनी

आचार्य ने जीवदया को धर्म-वृक्ष की जड़ और मोक्ष-महल की नसैनी (सीढ़ी) कहा है (श्लोक ८)। संसार में ‘जीवितदान’ (प्राणों की रक्षा) को सबसे बड़ा दान माना गया है। श्लोक १० के अनुसार, एक रोगी व्यक्ति भी सोने-चाँदी के प्रलोभन के आगे अपने जीवन को ही प्रिय मानता है। अतः दया के बिना तप और त्याग निरर्थक हैं।

५. गृहस्थ और मुनि: एक-दूसरे के पूरक

यद्यपि मुनि धर्म श्रेष्ठ है, पर गृहस्थ धर्म (गृहिधर्म) भी अत्यंत आवश्यक है। क्यों?

• मुनि रत्नत्रय के धारक होते हैं।
• उनके शरीर की स्थिति गृहस्थों द्वारा दिए गए भक्तिपूर्ण आहार पर निर्भर है।
• जो गृहस्थ अपने छह आवश्यकों का पालन करते हुए मुनियों की सेवा करता है, उसी का जीवन प्रशंसनीय है। इसके विपरीत, केवल धन अर्जन और भोगों में मस्त रहना जीवन को बंधन बनाना है (श्लोक १३)।

6. श्रावक धर्म: ११ प्रतिमाएँ और ७ व्यसन त्याग

गृहस्थ जीवन (श्रावक धर्म) की नींव ७ व्यसनों के त्याग पर टिकी है। आचार्य स्पष्ट करते हैं कि बिना व्यसन छोड़े व्रत टिक नहीं सकते। व्यसन वे मार्ग हैं जो मनुष्य को कल्याण से हटाकर अकल्याण में धकेल देते हैं।

• उदाहरण: जुए (द्यूत) के व्यसन में फँसकर युधिष्ठिर आदि को जो कष्ट झेलने पड़े, वे इतिहास में प्रमाण हैं।
• ११ प्रतिमाएँ: इन व्यसनों के त्याग के उपरांत ही श्रावक ‘दर्शन’ और ‘व्रत’ आदि के माध्यम से ११ सीढ़ियों (प्रतिमाओं) पर चढ़ता है।

7. देशचारित्र बनाम सकलचारित्र

ग्रन्थ में पाँच पापों (हिंसा, झूठ, चोरी, कुशील, परिग्रह) के त्याग की सीमा के आधार पर दो भेद किए गए हैं:

• देशचारित्र: जहाँ गृहस्थ इन पापों का त्याग आंशिक (एकदेश) रूप से करता है।
• सकलचारित्र: जहाँ मुनि इन पापों का पूर्ण रूप से त्याग करते हैं।

8. मुनि के २८ मूलगुण: साधना का आधार

मुनि धर्म में २८ मूलगुणों का पालन अनिवार्य है। आचार्य एक अद्भुत उदाहरण देते हैं (श्लोक ४०)—”जो मुनि मूलगुणों को छोड़कर केवल उत्तरगुणों के पालन में लगा है, वह उस मूर्ख के समान है जो शत्रु से अपना सिर बचाने के बजाय केवल अंगुली बचाने का प्रयास कर रहा है।”

प्रमुख मूलगुणों का स्वरूप:

• दिगम्बरत्व (अचेलकत्व): वस्त्र का त्याग केवल परंपरा नहीं, बल्कि संयम की आवश्यकता है। वस्त्र होने पर उसे धोने का आरम्भ (हिंसा), फटने पर व्याकुलता (परिग्रह) और छिन जाने पर क्रोध उत्पन्न होता है।
• केशलोच, स्थितिभोजन (खड़े होकर भोजन), भूमि शयन और समता।

9. रत्नत्रय: व्यवहार और निश्चय दृष्टि

मोक्ष का मार्ग ‘रत्नत्रय’ (सम्यग्दर्शन, ज्ञान, चारित्र) है, जिसे आचार्य ने दो स्तरों पर समझाया है:

स्वरूप	सम्यग्दर्शन	सम्यग्ज्ञान	सम्यक्चारित्र
व्यवहार	देव-शास्त्र-गुरु पर श्रद्धान	स्व-पर का संशय रहित ज्ञान	कर्मास्रव से विरति
निश्चय	निर्मल आत्म-ज्योति का निर्णय	आत्मा का ही बोध	आत्मा में ही स्थित होना

विशेष: व्यवहार रत्नत्रय पुण्य-पाप के बंध का कारण है, जबकि निश्चय रत्नत्रय कर्मों को निर्मूल कर मोक्ष का मार्ग प्रशस्त करता है (श्लोक ८१)।

10. साधु की महिमा और श्रावक का कर्तव्य

आचार्य कहते हैं कि यद्यपि आज प्रत्यक्ष ‘केवलज्ञानी’ मौजूद नहीं हैं, किंतु उनकी वाणी (जिनागम) और उसके रक्षक ‘साधु’ आज भी हमारे बीच हैं।

• साधु जहाँ पैर रखते हैं, वह भूमि तीर्थ बन जाती है।
• उनकी भक्ति साक्षात् जिनेन्द्र देव की पूजा के समान है।
• मुनि की उपासना श्रावक का अनिवार्य कर्तव्य है, क्योंकि वे ही मोक्षमार्ग के प्रत्यक्ष उदाहरण हैं।

11. आत्मा के प्रति विभिन्न मत और यथार्थ

आचार्य ने आत्मा के संबंध में फैले भ्रमों का संक्षेप में विवेचन किया है (श्लोक १३४-१३९):

• चार्वाक: इसे पंचभूतों से उत्पन्न जड़ मानते हैं।
• सांख्य: इसे केवल अकर्ता (भोक्ता) मानते हैं।
• बौद्ध (सौत्रान्तिक): इसे क्षणिक मानते हैं।
• वैशेषिक: इसे नित्य और व्यापक मानते हैं।

आचार्य इन मतों का खंडन कर आत्मा के यथार्थ स्वरूप (ज्ञाता-दृष्टा और स्व-संवेदन गोचर) को जानने पर बल देते हैं।

12. मनुष्य पर्याय: ‘अन्धक-वर्तकीय न्याय’

आचार्य कहते हैं कि करोड़ों कल्प बीतने के बाद बड़ी मुश्किल से हमें यह मनुष्य देह मिली है। इसे ‘अन्धक-वर्तकीय न्याय’ (अंधे के हाथ में अचानक बटेर लग जाना – एक दुर्लभ संयोग) कहा गया है।

• यदि इसे पाकर भी हम विषयों में मुग्ध रहे, तो यह अनमोल अवसर नष्ट हो जाएगा।
• उत्तम कुल, बुद्धि और चतुरता मिलना और भी दुर्लभ है। जो इन सबको पाकर धर्म की आराधना नहीं करता, वह उस मूर्ख के समान है जिसने हाथ में आए चिंतामणि रत्न को कचरा समझकर फेंक दिया।

13. मृत्यु का कोई कैलेंडर नहीं होता

अक्सर हम धर्म को ‘रिटायरमेंट’ के लिए टाल देते हैं। हम सोचते हैं—”अभी तो युवा हैं, धन है, शरीर पुष्ट है, धर्म बाद में करेंगे।”

आचार्य चेतावनी देते हैं (श्लोक १६७-१७०): “मृत्यु किस समय ग्रास बना लेगी, इसका कोई नियम नहीं है।” बुद्धिमान वही है जो अनिश्चित काल की प्रतीक्षा न कर, आज ही आत्म-हित में लग जाए।

14. आभासी सुख बनाम वास्तविक सुख

संसार में हर प्राणी सुख चाहता है, पर उसे मिलता क्यों नहीं? कारण है—अविवेक।

• आभासी सुख: सातावेदनीय कर्म के उदय से कुछ समय के लिए इंद्रिय तृप्ति होना। चूँकि संयोग स्थायी नहीं है, इसलिए वियोग होते ही पुनः संताप (दुःख) होता है।
• वास्तविक सुख: जो आकुलता के अभाव में है। यह केवल मोक्ष में ही संभव है, जहाँ आत्मा अनन्त काल तक निराकुल और बाधारहित शाश्वत सुख का अनुभव करती है (श्लोक १०९)।

15. उत्तम क्षमा और दस धर्म

तपस्वियों के लिए आचार्य का विशेष निर्देश है कि अज्ञानी जनों द्वारा पहुँचाई गई बाधाओं को शांति से सहन करें। यही ‘उत्तम क्षमा’ है। ये दस धर्म (क्षमा, मार्दव, आर्जव आदि) ही संवर (कर्मों को रोकने) के वास्तविक कारण हैं।

16. उपसंहार: धर्म की महिमा

अधिकार के अंत में (श्लोक १७९-१९८) आचार्य ने धर्म की महिमा का गान किया है। वर्तमान काल में बुद्धि की कमी के कारण यदि कोई समस्त शास्त्रों का अभ्यास न कर सके, तो भी उसे ‘श्रुत’ (आगम) के उस भाग का अभ्यास अवश्य करना चाहिए जो मुक्ति का साधक हो।

२. दानोपदेशन : गृहस्थ के पापों का प्रक्षालन और लक्ष्मी का बीज

इस अधिकारमें ५४ श्लोक हैं। श्रावक जीवन में धन का अर्जन अपरिहार्य है, लेकिन इस अर्जन के साथ अनजाने में कई पाप भी जुड़ जाते हैं। आचार्य पद्मनन्दी ने ‘दानोपदेशन’ (५४ श्लोक) अधिकार में बताया है कि दान केवल परोपकार नहीं, बल्कि स्वयं की आत्मा को शुद्ध करने की एक वैज्ञानिक प्रक्रिया है।

१. दान: पाप-मल को धोने वाला जल

आचार्य एक बहुत ही व्यावहारिक उदाहरण देते हैं—जिस प्रकार पानी कपड़े पर लगे रक्त या गंदगी को धोकर उसे स्वच्छ कर देता है, वैसे ही सत्पात्र दान श्रावक द्वारा कृषि, व्यापार और वाणिज्य में किए गए अनिवार्य पापों (हिंसा आदि) को धो देता है (श्लोक ५-७, १३)। यह श्रावक के छह आवश्यक कर्तव्यों में सर्वप्रमुख है।

२. वट-वृक्ष का उदाहरण: दान का फल

दान देने से लक्ष्मी घटती नहीं, बल्कि बढ़ती है। आचार्य इसे एक बीज के माध्यम से समझाते हैं:

• यदि एक छोटा-सा वट का बीज उपजाऊ भूमि में बोया जाए, तो वह विशाल वृक्ष बनकर हजारों नए बीज और शीतल छाया प्रदान करता है।
• इसी प्रकार, सुपात्र को दिया गया थोड़ा-सा दान भी भविष्य में कई गुना होकर वैभव और शांति के रूप में वापस लौटता है (श्लोक ८, १४, ३८)।

३. दाता और पात्र की उन्नति

आचार्य ने दान देने वाले गृहस्थ की तुलना एक राजमिस्त्री (राज) से की है। जैसे राजमिस्त्री ऊँचा भवन बनाते समय स्वयं भी क्रमशः ऊँची सीढ़ियों पर चढ़ता जाता है, वैसे ही मुमुक्षु साधुओं को आहारादि दान देने वाला श्रावक, साधु को रत्नत्रय में स्थित करने के साथ-साथ स्वयं भी ऊँचे पद (स्वर्ग या मोक्ष) की ओर अग्रसर होता है (श्लोक ९)।

४. धनवान कौन: स्वामी या सेवक?

आचार्य ने धन के मोह में फंसे व्यक्ति पर तीखा कटाक्ष किया है:

• जो संपन्न होकर भी दान नहीं देता, वह धन का स्वामी नहीं बल्कि उस कोषाध्यक्ष (खजांची) के समान है जो दूसरों के धन की रक्षा तो करता है, पर स्वयं एक पैसे का उपभोग या सदुपयोग नहीं कर सकता (श्लोक ३६)।
• ऐसे व्यक्ति का धन संचय व्यर्थ है। उसकी तुलना में वह कौआ भी श्रेष्ठ है जो भोजन मिलने पर काँव-काँव करके अपने साथियों को बुलाता है और मिल-बाँटकर खाता है (श्लोक ४५-४६)।

५. पात्रों का वर्गीकरण

अधिकार के अंत में दान के प्रभाव को समझने के लिए पात्रों का भेद बताया गया है (श्लोक ४८-४९):

1. उत्तम पात्र: रत्नत्रय के धारी दिगंबर मुनि।
2. मध्यम पात्र: देशव्रती श्रावक (ऐलक, क्षुल्लक आदि)।
3. जघन्य पात्र: अविरत सम्यग्दृष्टि।
4. कुपात्र और अपात्र: मिथ्यादृष्टि या संयमहीन, जिन्हें दान देने का फल वैसा नहीं होता जैसा सत्पात्रों को देने से मिलता है।

3 अनित्यपञ्चाशत्: क्या हमारा शोक करना व्यर्थ है?

संसार में हम अक्सर किसी के जाने पर या वस्तुओं के खोने पर दुखी होते हैं। लेकिन आचार्य पद्मनन्दी ने अपनी कृति के तीसरे अधिकार ‘अनित्यपञ्चाशत्’ (५५ श्लोक) में एक ऐसा सत्य उद्घाटित किया है, जो हमें हर वियोग में शांत रहने की शक्ति देता है।

१. संयोग और वियोग: एक स्वाभाविक सत्य

आचार्य बताते हैं कि शरीर, धन, स्त्री और पुत्र—ये सब स्वभाव से ही अस्थिर हैं। इनका संयोग (मिलना) और वियोग (बिछड़ना) प्रकृति का नियम है। ज्ञानी वही है जो इन दोनों स्थितियों में न तो बहुत हर्षित हो और न ही विषादग्रस्त।

२. मृत्यु की अनिवार्यता: सांप और लकीर का उदाहरण

आचार्य एक बहुत ही प्रभावशाली रूपक का प्रयोग करते हैं:

“जिसका आयु कर्म जिस समय समाप्त होना है, उसका प्राणान्त उसी क्षण होगा।”

इसे न मानकर शोक करना वैसा ही है जैसे ‘सांप के निकल जाने के बाद उसकी लकीर को पीटते रहना’ (श्लोक १०)। जब जीवन रूपी सर्प निकल गया, तब धर्म का संचय न करके केवल विलाप करना निष्फल है।

३. पक्षी और वृक्ष: संसार का रैन बसेरा

आचार्य ने संसार की नश्वरता को समझाने के लिए एक सुंदर उदाहरण दिया है (श्लोक १६):

• जिस प्रकार रात होने पर पक्षी अलग-अलग दिशाओं से आकर एक वृक्ष पर बसेरा करते हैं।
• सुबह होते ही वे पुनः अपनी-अपनी दिशाओं में उड़ जाते हैं।
• ठीक वैसे ही, जीव अलग-अलग योनियों से आकर एक कुल या परिवार में जन्म लेते हैं और आयु पूरी होते ही अन्य कुलों में चले जाते हैं।

ऐसी स्थिति में, किसी के चले जाने पर शोक करना केवल अज्ञानता है, क्योंकि कोई भी सदा के लिए किसी का नहीं है।

४. इष्ट वियोग में शोक का त्याग

अधिकार का मुख्य उद्देश्य हमें मानसिक शांति प्रदान करना है। जब हम यह समझ लेते हैं कि संसार का हर पदार्थ (चेतन हो या अचेतन) अस्थिर है, तो हम ‘इष्ट वियोग’ (प्रिय वस्तु या व्यक्ति का बिछड़ना) के दुःख से मुक्त हो जाते हैं। आचार्य प्रेरणा देते हैं कि शोक करने के बजाय उस अमूल्य समय को धर्म की साधना में लगाना चाहिए।

एकत्वसप्तति: स्वयं की खोज और साम्य का मार्ग

अक्सर हम शांति और सुख को तीर्थों, शास्त्रों या बाहरी वस्तुओं में खोजते हैं। लेकिन आचार्य पद्मनन्दी अपनी कृति के चौथे अधिकार ‘एकत्वसप्तति’ (८० श्लोक) में स्पष्ट करते हैं कि वह परमात्मा कहीं बाहर नहीं, बल्कि हर प्राणी के भीतर अवस्थित है।

१. अज्ञानता का परदा: लकड़ी और अग्नि का उदाहरण

आचार्य कहते हैं कि जैसे लकड़ी के भीतर अग्नि अव्यक्त रूप से विद्यमान होती है, पर हर कोई उसे देख नहीं पाता, वैसे ही परमात्मा हमारे भीतर है।

• शास्त्रों का जाल: कितने ही विद्वान केवल शास्त्रों के शब्दों में उलझकर उस ‘चेतन तत्व’ को प्राप्त नहीं कर पाते।
• जात्यन्ध-हस्ती न्याय: जैसे अंधे व्यक्ति हाथी के एक-एक अंग को छूकर उसे पूरा हाथी समझ लेते हैं, वैसे ही मन्दबुद्धि लोग सत्य को एकान्त रूप से ग्रहण कर अपना अहित करते हैं।

२. द्वैत से अद्वैत की ओर

आचार्य ने संसार और मोक्ष के मूल अंतर को ‘बुद्धि’ के स्तर पर समझाया है:

• द्वैत बुद्धि (संसार): जहाँ कर्म-आत्मा, शुभ-अशुभ, राग-द्वेष और बन्ध-मोक्ष जैसे भेद बने रहते हैं, वहाँ संसार का परिभ्रमण है।
• अद्वैत बुद्धि (मुक्ति): जब योगी समस्त बाह्य पदार्थों से भिन्न एक अखंड आत्मा का अनुभव करता है, तब वह मुक्ति के सम्मुख होता है। यहाँ तक कि ‘मैं शुद्ध हूँ’—यह विकल्प भी शांत हो जाता है।

३. मोक्ष की इच्छा भी बाधक?

एक अत्यंत क्रांतिकारी विचार यहाँ प्रस्तुत किया गया है (श्लोक ५१-५३):

“मुमुक्षु योगी मोह के निमित्त से उत्पन्न होने वाली ‘मोक्ष की इच्छा’ को भी प्राप्ति में बाधक मानते हैं।”

जब आत्मा पूरी तरह निर्विकल्प होती है, तभी वह अपने वास्तविक स्वरूप को प्राप्त करती है। जहाँ इच्छा है, वहाँ अभी पूर्ण विश्राम नहीं है।

४. साम्य: परमात्मा की उपासना का एकमात्र उपाय

जिनेन्द्र देव ने उस परम पद को पाने का एक ही मार्ग बताया है—साम्य (समता)। इसके अन्य नाम हैं:

• स्वास्थ्य, समाधि, योग, चित्तनिरोध और शुद्धोपयोग।

साम्य का अर्थ: शुद्ध चैतन्य को छोड़कर आकृति, अक्षर, वर्ण या अन्य किसी भी विकल्प का न रहना ही वास्तविक साम्य है (श्लोक ६३-६५)।

५. परंज्योति: क्या छोड़ें और क्या अपनाएँ?

अधिकार के अंत में आचार्य स्पष्ट निर्देश देते हैं:

• हेय (त्यागने योग्य): कर्म और राग-द्वेष।
• उपादेय (ग्रहण करने योग्य): उपयोगस्वरूप ‘परंज्योति’ (शुद्ध आत्मा)।

इस आत्म-तत्त्व के निरंतर अभ्यास का अंतिम फल शाश्वत मोक्ष की प्राप्ति है।

५. यतिभावनाष्टक – इस अधिकारमें ९ श्लोक हैं। यहाँ उन मुनियोंकी स्तुति की गई है जो पाँचों इन्द्रियोंपर विजय प्राप्त करके विषयभोगोंसे विरक्त होते हुए ऋतुविशेषके अनुसार अनेक प्रकारके कष्टोंको सहते हैं और भयानक उपसर्गक उपस्थित होनेपर भी कभी समाधिसे विचलित नहीं होते।
६. उपाससंस्कार- इस अधिकारमें ६२ श्लोक हैं। यहाँ सर्वप्रथम व्रत और दानके प्रथम प्रवर्तक आदि जिनेन्द्र और राजा श्रेयांसके द्वारा धर्मकी स्थितिको दिखलाकर उसका स्वरूप बतलाया है। पश्चात् सम्पूर्ण और देशके भेदसे दो भेदरूप उस धर्मके स्वामियोंका निर्देश किया है। उनमें देशतः उस धर्मको धारण करनेवाले श्रावकोंके ये छह कर्म आवश्यक बतलाये गये हैं- देवपूजा, निर्ग्रन्थ गुरुकी उपासना, स्वाध्याय, संयम, तप और दान (७)। तत्पश्चात् सामायिक व्रतके स्वरूपका दिग्दर्शन कराते हुए उसके लिये सात व्यसनोंका परित्याग अनिवार्य निर्दिष्ट किया गया है (९)।
आगे यथाक्रमसे (१४-१७,१८-१९,२०-२१,२२-२५,२५-३०,३१-३६) गृहस्थके उन देवपूजा आदि छह आवश्यकोंका विवेचन करके जीवदया (३७-४१) की आवश्यकता दिखलायी गई है। तत्पश्चात् कर्मक्षयकी कारण होनेसे बारह अनुप्रेक्षाओंके स्वरूपको बतलाकर उनके निरन्तर चिन्तनकी प्रेरणा की गई है (४२-५८)। अन्तमें जो उत्तमक्षमादिरूप दस धर्म मुनियोंके लिये निर्दिष्ट किये गये हैं उनका सेवन यथाशक्ति आगमोक्त विधिसे श्रावकोंको मी करना चाहिये, यह निर्देश करते हुए विशुद्ध आत्मा और जीवदया इन दोनोंके संमेनलको मोक्षका करण बतलाकर इस अधिकारको पूर्ण कियागया है।
७. देशव्रतोद्योतन- इस अधिकारमें २७ श्लोक हैं। यहाँ अनेक मिथ्यादृष्टियोंकी अपेक्षा एक
सम्यग्दृष्टिको प्रशंसाका पात्र बतलाया है तथा उस सम्यग्दर्शनके साथ मनुष्यभवके प्राप्त हो जानेपर तपको ग्रहण करनेकी ही प्रेरणा की है। यदि कदाचित् कुटुम्ब आदिके मोह अथवा अशक्तिके कारण उस तपका अनुष्ठान करना सम्भव न हो तो फिर सम्यग्दर्शनके साथ छह आवश्यकों, आठ मूल्यगुणों व पाँच अणुव्रतादिरूप बारह उत्तरगुणोंको तो धारण करना ही चाहिये। साथ ही रात्रिभोजनका परित्याग करते हुए पवित्र व योग्य वस्त्रसे छाने गये जलका पीना तथा शक्तिके अनुसार मौन आदि अन्य नियमोंका पालन करना भी श्रावकके लिये पुण्यका वर्धक है (४-६)। चूँकि श्रावक अनेक पापप्रचुर कार्योंको करके धनका उपार्जन करता है, अतएव इस पापसे मुक्त होनेके लिये उसके लिये दानकी आवश्यकता और उसके महत्त्वचको दिखलाकर सत्पात्रके लिये आहारदिरूप चार प्रकरके दानकी विशेष प्रेरणा की गई है (७-१७)।
श्रावकके छह आवश्यकोंमें देवदर्शन व पूजन प्रथम है। देवदर्शनादिके विना उस गृहस्थाश्रमको पत्थरकी नाव जैसा निर्दिष्ट किया गया है (१८)। इसके लिये चैत्यालयका निर्मापण अतिशय पुण्यवर्धक है। कारण यह कि उस चैत्यालयके सहारे मुनि और श्रावक दोनोंका ही धर्म अवस्थित रहता है। धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष; इन चार पुरुषाथोंमें सर्वश्रेष्ठ मोक्ष ही है। यदि धर्म पुरुषार्थ उस मोक्षके साधक रूपमें अनुष्ठित होता है तो वह भी उपादेय है। इसके विपरीत यदि वह भोगादिककी अभिलाषासे किया जाता है तो वह धर्म पुरुषार्थ भी पापरूप ही है। कारण यह कि अणुव्रत या महाव्रत दोनोंका ही उद्देश्य एकमात्र मोक्षकी प्राप्ति है, इसके विना वे भी दुखके ही कारण है (२५-२६)।
८. सिद्धस्तुति इस अधिकारमें २९ श्लोक हैं। यहाँ प्रथमतः सिद्धोंको नमस्कारपूर्वक उनसे अपने कल्याणकी प्रार्थना करते हुए ज्ञानावरणादि आठ कर्मोके क्षयसे क्रमशः सिद्धोंके कौनसे गुण प्रादुर्भूत होते हैं, इसका निर्देश किया गया है (६)। तत्पश्चात् उनके ज्ञान-दर्शन एवं सुखादिकी विशेष प्ररूपणा की गई है।
९. आलोचना – इस अधिकारमें ३३ श्लोक हैं। यहाँ जिनन्द्रके गुणोंका कीर्तन करते हुए यह बतलाया है कि मन, वचन और काय तथा कृत, कारित व अनुमोदन; इनको परस्पर गुणित करनेपर जो नौ स्थान (मनकृत, मनकारित और मनानुमोदित आदि) प्राप्त होते हैं उनके द्वारा प्राणीके पाप उत्पन्न होता है। उसे दूर करनेके लिये जिनेन्द्र प्रभुके आगे आत्मनिन्दा करते हुए ‘वह मेरा पाप मिथ्या हो’ ऐसा विचार करना चाहिये। अज्ञानता या प्रमादके वशीभूत होकर जो पाप उत्पन्न हुआ है उस निष्कपट भावसे जिनेन्द्र व गुरुके समक्ष प्रगट करना, इसका नाम आलोचना है। यद्यपि जिनेन्द्र भगवान् सर्वज्ञ होनेसे उस सब पापको स्वयं जानते हैं, फिर भी आत्मशुद्धिके लिये दोषोंकी आलोचना करना आवश्यक है। कारण कि साधुके मूल और उत्तर गुणोंके परिपालनमें जो दोष दृष्टिगोचर होते हैं, उनकी आलोचना करनेसे हृदयसे भीतर कोई शल्य नहीं रहता (७-९)।
आगे यहाँ यह भी कहा गया है कि प्राणीके असंख्यात संकल्प-विकल्प और तदनुसार उसके असंख्यात पाप भी होते हैं। ऐसी अवस्थामें आगमोक्त विधिसे उन सब पापोंका प्रायश्चित्त करना सम्भव नहीं है। अत एव उन सबके शोधनका एक प्रमुख उपाय है अपने मन और इन्द्रियोंको बाह्य पदाथोंकी ओरसे हटाकर उनका परमात्मस्वरूपके साथ एकीकरण करना। इसके लिये मनके ऊपर विजय प्राप्त करना आवश्यक हैं। कारण कि उस मनकी अवस्था ऐसी है कि समस्त परिग्रहको छोड़कर वनका आश्रय ले लेनेपर भी वह मन बाह्य पदाथोंकी ओर दौड़ता है। अत एव उसके ऊपर विजय प्राप्त करनेके लिये उसे परमात्मस्वरूप चिन्तनमें लगाना श्रेयस्कर है। इस प्रकार विवेचन करते हुए अन्तमें यह निर्दिष्ट किया गया है कि सर्वज्ञ प्रभुने जिस चरित्रका उपदेश दिया है उसका परिपालन इस कलि कालमें दुष्कर है। अतएव जो भव्य जीव इस समय तन्मय होकर उस सर्वज्ञ वीतराग प्रभुकी केवल भक्ति ही करता है वह उस दृढ़ भक्तिके प्रसादसे

१७) भवनमिदमकीर्तेश्चौर्यवेश्यादिसर्वव्यसनपतिरशेषापन्निधिः पापबीजम् । विषमनरकमार्गेष्वग्रयायीति मत्वा क इह विशदबुद्धिद्यूतमंगीकरोति ।।१७ ।।

अर्थ-यह जुआ निन्दाका स्थान है, चोरी एवं वेश्या आदि अन्य सब व्यसनोंमें मुख्य है, समस्त आपत्तियोंका स्थान है, पापका कारण है, तथा दुःखदायक नरकके मार्गोंमें अग्रगामी है; इस प्रकार जानकर यहाँ लोकमें कौन-सा निर्मल बुद्धिका धारक मनुष्य उपयुक्त जुआको स्वीकार करता है? अर्थात् नहीं करता। जो दुर्बुद्धि मनुष्य हैं वे ही इस अनेक आपत्तियोंके उत्पादक जुएको अपनाते हैं, न कि विवेकी मनुष्य ।।१७ ।।

“Gambling is the abode of disgrace, the lord of all vices such as theft and association with prostitutes,
the repository of every calamity, the seed of sin,
and the foremost path leading to dreadful hells.
Knowing this well, which person of pure and clear intellect would ever accept gambling?”

Commentary (Ṭīkā) – English Explanation

In this worldly existence, gambling is described as:

• The dwelling place of infamy and dishonor,
• The leader of all other vices, such as theft and indulgence in prostitution,
• The storehouse of every kind of calamity,
• The seed of sin, and
• The foremost path leading toward terrifying hellish states.

Understanding gambling in this way, who among the wise and pure-minded would ever accept it?
Certainly, no person endowed with true wisdom would adopt gambling. Only those of deluded or impure intellect engage in such behavior, for it gives rise to countless sufferings and moral downfall.

Gambling is portrayed not merely as a bad habit, but as the root of multiple moral collapses, pulling the soul toward suffering, disgrace, and spiritual ruin. A wise person, understanding its consequences, naturally renounces it.

श्लोक 18

१८) क्वाकीर्तिः क्व दरिद्रता क्व विपदः क्व क्रोधलोभादयः चौर्यादिव्यसनं क्व च क्व नरके दुःखं मृतानां नृणाम् । चेतश्चेद्‌गुरुमोहतो न रमते द्यूते वदन्त्युन्नत-प्रज्ञा यद्भुवि दुर्णयेषु निखिलेष्वेतधुरि स्मर्यते ।। १८ ।।

अर्थ – यदि चित्त महामोहसे जुएमें नहीं रमता है तो फिर अपयश अथवा निन्दा कहाँसे हो सकती है? निर्धनता कहाँ रह सकती है? विपत्तियाँ कहाँसे आ सकती हैं? क्रोध एवं लोभ आदि कषायें कहाँसे उदित हो सकती हैं? चोरी आदि अन्यान्य व्यसन कहाँ रह सकते हैं? तथा मरकरके नरकमें उत्पन्न हुए मनुष्योंको दुःख कहाँसे प्राप्त हो सकता है? अर्थात् जुएसे विरक्त हुए मनुष्यको उपर्युक्त आपत्तियोंमेंसे कोई भी आपत्ति नहीं प्राप्त होती। इस प्रकार उन्नत बुद्धिके धारक विद्वान् कहा करते है। ठीक ही है, क्योंकि समस्त दुर्व्यसनोंमें यह जुआ गाड़ीकी धुराके समान मुख्य माना जाता है ।।१८ ।।

Verse 18 – English Translation

“Where is disgrace, where is poverty, where are calamities,
where are anger, greed, and other passions,
where are vices such as theft,
and where is the suffering of humans in hell after death—
if the mind, freed from deep delusion, does not delight in gambling?
Thus declare the wise and discerning,
for among all evil practices in this world, gambling is remembered as the foremost cause.”

Explanation (Based on the Ṭīkā)

If the mind does not become attached to gambling due to deep delusion, then:

• Where can disgrace or dishonor arise?
• Where can poverty exist?
• Where can misfortune occur?
• Where can passions like anger and greed arise?
• Where can theft and other vices exist?
• And how can suffering in hell after death arise?

The wise and discerning declare that freedom from gambling removes the root of all these evils. This is because gambling stands foremost among all destructive vices, just as the front axle (dhurā) bears the primary burden of a cart.

Thus, when gambling is abandoned, all other moral and spiritual dangers naturally fall away.

Gambling is not merely one vice among many—it is the gateway through which countless moral, emotional, and spiritual afflictions enter. A mind free from attachment to gambling remains protected from disgrace, suffering, and downfall.

टीका – यद् गेहिव्रतम्। सूरिभिः अभितः समन्तात्। आभिः प्रतिमाभिः विस्तारिभिः प्रोक्तम्। तद् गेहिव्रतं उपासकाध्ययनतः सप्तमांगात्। विस्तराद् ज्ञातव्यम्। तत्रापि उपासकाध्ययने। यदि आदौ व्यसनोज्झनं मतं कथित तद् व्यसनोज्झनम्। अत्रैव पद्मनन्दिग्रन्थे। आसूत्र्यते कथ्यते। यद्यतः। तद् व्यसनोज्झनं सतां व्रतविधेः मूलः सः व्रतविधिः परां प्रतिष्ठां याति गच्छति ।।१५।।

अर्थ – इन प्रतिमाओंके द्वारा जिस गृहस्थव्रत (विकलचारित्र) को यहाँ आचार्योंने विस्तारपूर्वक कहा है उसका यदि अधिक विस्तार से जानना तो उपासकाध्ययन अंग से जानना चाहिए। वहाँपर भी जो व्यसनका परित्याग बतलाया गया है उसका निर्देश यहाँपर भी कर दिया गया है। कारण इसका यह है कि साधु पुरुषोंके समस्त, व्रतविधानादिकी उत्कृष्ट प्रतिष्ठा व्यसनोंके परित्यागपर ही निर्भर है ।। १५ ।।

Verse 15 – English Translation

yat proktaṃ pratimābhir ābhir abhito vistāribhiḥ sūribhiḥ
jñātavyaṃ tad upāsakādhyayanato gehivratam vistarat |
tatrāpi vyasanaujghanaṃ yadi tad apy āsūtryate ’traiva yat
tanmūlaḥ sakalaṃ satāṃ vratavidhir yāti pratiṣṭhāṃ parām || 15 ||

“That householders’ discipline (gṛhastha-vrata) which has been expounded in detail by the sages through these progressive stages (pratimās),
should be understood in greater detail from the Upāsakādhyayana (a Jain canonical text).
Even there, the abandonment of addictions (vices) is taught first;
and the same is also stated here in this text.

For this reason, the renunciation of vices is the very foundation of all noble vows.
Upon this foundation alone does the entire discipline of vows attain its highest perfection.”

Explanatory Meaning (Simple English)

The householder’s discipline (also called vikalacāritra) that has been described through these eleven spiritual stages (pratimās) has been explained in detail by the great teachers. Anyone who wishes to study it deeply should refer to the Upāsakādhyayana section of the Jain scriptures.

Even there, the renunciation of harmful habits (such as gambling, intoxication, violence, etc.) is described first. The same principle has also been emphasized in this text by Ācārya Padmanandi.

The reason for this is that the complete and perfect establishment of all religious vows depends entirely upon the abandonment of vices. Only when a person gives up destructive habits can true spiritual discipline flourish and reach its highest state.

The foundation of all spiritual progress for a householder lies in giving up harmful addictions. Without this, even religious observances lose their true value. When vices are abandoned, the path of vows becomes firm, pure, and capable of leading one toward liberation.

श्लोक 16

१६) द्यूतमांससुरावेश्याखेटचौर्यपरांगनाः । महापापानि सप्तेति व्यसनानि त्यजेद् बुधः ।।१६ ।।

टीका इति हेतोः। बुधः। सप्त व्यसनानि त्यजेत्। इतीति किम्। यतः महापापानि महापापयुक्तानि। तान्येव दर्शयति। द्यूतं मांसं सुरा वेश्या आखेटः चौर्य परांगना इति ॥१६॥

अर्थ- जुआ, मांस, मद्य, वेश्या, शिकार, चोरी और परस्त्री; इस प्रकार ये सात महापापरूप व्यसन हैं। बुद्धिमान् पुरुषको इन सबका त्याग करना चाहिये ।।

विशेषार्थ- व्यसन बुरी आदतको कहा जाता है। ऐसे व्यसन सात हैं १ जुआ खेलना, २ मांस भक्षण करना, ३ शराब पीना, ४ वेश्यासे सम्बन्ध रखना, ५ शिकार खेलना (मृग आदि पशुओंके घातमें आनन्द मानना), ६ चोरी करना और ७ अन्यकी स्त्रीसे अनुराग करना। ये सातों व्यसन चूँकि महापापको उत्पन्न करनेवाले हैं, अतएव विवेकी जनको इनका परित्याग अवश्य करना चाहिये ।। १६ ।।

Verse 16 – English Translation

dyūta-māṃsa-surā-veśyā-kheṭa-caurya-parāṅganāḥ |
mahāpāpāni sapteti vyasanāni tyajed budhaḥ || 16 ||

“Gambling, meat-eating, intoxicants, association with prostitutes, hunting, theft, and attachment to another’s wife—
these seven are great sins; therefore, a wise person should abandon these addictions.”

Commentary (Ṭīkā) – English Explanation

The verse states that a wise person (budha) should renounce seven destructive addictions (vyasanas).
They are called mahāpāpa (great sins) because they inevitably lead to grave moral and spiritual downfall.

These seven are:

1. Dyūta – gambling
2. Māṁsa – eating meat
3. Surā – consuming intoxicants
4. Veśyā – association with prostitutes
5. Ākheṭa – hunting
6. Caurya – stealing
7. Parāṅganā – attachment to another person’s spouse

The commentary explains that these are termed mahāpāpa because they generate severe karmic bondage and obstruct spiritual progress. Therefore, a discerning and wise person must completely abandon them.

Expanded Meaning (Viśeṣārtha)

“Vyasana” means a harmful habit or addiction. These seven are considered especially destructive:

1. Gambling
2. Eating meat
3. Drinking alcohol
4. Association with prostitutes
5. Hunting or delighting in the killing of animals
6. Stealing
7. Desire for another’s spouse

श्लोक 14 : श्रावकों की ग्यारह प्रतिमा

अब आचार्य श्रावकों की ग्यारह प्रतिमाओं के नाम बताते हैं-

आदौ दर्शनमुन्नतं व्रतमितः सामायिकं प्रोषध-स्त्त्यागश्चैव सचित्तवस्तुनि दिवाभुक्तं तथा ब्रह्म च। नारम्भो न परिग्रहोऽननुमतिर्नोद्दिष्टमेकादश स्थानानीति गृहिव्रते व्यसनितात्यागस्तदाद्यः स्मृतः ।।१४ ।।

टीका – गृहिव्रते गृहस्थधर्मे इति एकादशस्थानानि सन्ति। धर्मार्थं तान्येव दर्शयति। आदौ प्रथमतः । दर्शनं दर्शनप्रतिमा १ । इतः पश्चात् व्रतं व्रतप्रतिमा २। ततः सामायिकं सामायिकप्रतिमा ३ । ततः प्रोषधं प्रोषधोपवासप्रतिमा ४ । च पुनः। एव निश्चयेन। सचित्तवस्तुनि त्यागः ५। ततः दिवाभुक्तं रात्रौ स्त्री असेव्या (?) ६। तथा ब्रह्म ब्रह्मचर्यप्रतिमा ७ । आरम्भो न ८ । परिग्रहो न ९ । अनुमतिर्न १०। उद्दिष्टं न ११। गृहिधर्मे एकादश स्थानानि कथितानि । तासां प्रतिमानां आद्यस्तदाद्यः व्यसनितात्यागःस्मृतः कथितः ।।१४ ।।

अर्थ – सर्वप्रथम उन्नतिको प्राप्त हुआ सम्यग्दर्शन, इसके पश्चात् व्रत, तत्पश्चात् क्रमशः सामायिक, प्रोषधोपवास, सचित्त वस्तुका त्याग, दिनमें भोजन करना अर्थात् रात्रिभोजनका त्याग, तदनन्तर ब्रह्मचर्यका धारण करना, आरम्भ नहीं करना, परिग्रहका न रखना, गृहस्थीके कार्योंमें सम्मति न देना, तथा उद्दिष्ट भोजनको ग्रहण न करना; इस प्रकार ये श्रावकधर्ममें ग्यारह प्रतिमायें निर्दिष्ट की गई हैं। उन सबके आदिमें द्यूतादि दुर्व्यसनोंका त्याग स्मरण किया गया है अर्थात् बतलाया गया है ।।

विशेषार्थ – सकलचारित्र और विकलचारित्रके भेदसे चारित्र दो प्रकारका है। इनमें सकलचारित्र मुनियोंके और विकलचारित्र श्रावकोंके होता है। उनमें श्रावकोंकी निम्न ग्यारह श्रेणियाँ (प्रतिमायें) हैं- दर्शन, व्रत, सामायिक, प्रोषधोपवास, सचित्तत्याग, दिवाभुक्ति, ब्रह्मचर्य, आरम्भत्याग, परिग्रहत्यांग, अनुमतित्याग और उद्दिष्टत्याग।

(१) विशुद्ध सम्यग्दर्शनके साथ संसार, शरीर एवं इनिद्रयविषयभोगोंसे विरक्त होकर पाक्षिक श्रावकके आचारके उन्मुख होनेका नाम दर्शनप्रतिमा है।

(२) माया, मिथ्या और निदानरूप तीन शल्योंसे रहित होकर अतिचार रहित पाँच अणुव्रतों एवं सात शीलव्रतोके धारण करनेको व्रत प्रतिमा कहा जाता है।

(३) नियमित समय तक हिंसादि पाँचों पापोंका पूर्णतया त्याग करके अनित्य व अशरण आदि भावनाओंका तथा संसार एवं मोक्षके स्वरूप आदिका विचार करना, इसे सामायिक कहते हैं। तृतीय प्रतिमाधारी श्रावक इसे प्राप्तः, दोपहर और सायंकालमें नियमित स्वरूपसे करता है।

(४) प्रत्येक अष्टमी और चतुर्दशीको सोलह प्रहर तक चार प्रकारके भोजन (अशन, पान, खाद्य और लेह्य) के परित्यागका नाम प्रोषधोपवास है। यहाँ प्रोषध शब्दका अर्थ एकाशन और उपवासका अर्थ सब प्रकारके भोजनका परित्याग है। जैसे यदि अष्टमीको प्रोषधोपवास करना है तो सप्तमीके दिन एकाशन करके अष्टमीको उपवास करना चाहिये और तत्पश्चात् नवमीको भी एकाशन ही करना चाहिये। प्रोषधोपवासके समय हिंसादि पापोंके साथ शरीरशृंगारादिका भी त्याग करना अनिवार्य होता है।

(५) जो वनस्पतियाँ निगोदजीवोंसे व्याप्त होती हैं उनके त्यागको सचित्तत्याग कहा जाता है।

(६) रात्रिमें भोजनका परित्याग करके दिनमें ही भोजन करनेका नियम करना, यह दिवाभुक्तिप्रतिमा कही जाती है। किन्हीं आचार्योंके अभिप्रायानुसार दिनमें मैथुनके परित्यागको दिवाभुक्ति (षष्ठ प्रतिमा) कहा जाता है।

(७) शरीरके स्वभावका विचार करके कामभोगसे विरत होनेका नाम ब्रह्मचर्य प्रतिमा है।

(८) कृषि एवं वाणिज्य आदि आरम्भके परित्यागको आरम्भत्यागप्रतिमा कहते हैं।

(९) धन-धान्यादिरूप दस प्रकारके बाह्य परिग्रहमें ममत्वबुद्धिको छोड़कर सन्तोषका अनुभव करना, इसे परिग्रहत्यागप्रतिमा कहा जाता है।

(१०) आरम्भ, परिग्रह एवं इस लोक सम्बन्धी अन्य कर्योंके विषयमें सम्मति न देनेका नाम अनुमतित्याग प्रतिमा हैं।

(११) गृहवासको छोड़कर भिक्षावृत्तिसे भोजन करते हुए उद्दिष्ट भोजनका त्याग करनेको उद्दिष्टत्याग कहा जाता है। इन प्रतिमाओंमें पूर्वकी प्रतिमाओंका निर्वाह होनेपर ही आगेकी प्रतिमामें परिपूर्णता होती है, अन्यथा नहीं ।।१४ ।।

Commentary (Ṭīkā)

In the discipline of householders (gṛhastha-dharma), there are eleven stages (pratimās). These are described as follows:

1. Darśana-pratimā – Right Faith
2. Vrata-pratimā – Observance of vows
3. Sāmāyika-pratimā – Practice of equanimity
4. Proṣadha-pratimā – Observance of fasting
5. Sacitta-tyāga – Renunciation of sentient foods
6. Divābhukti – Eating only during the daytime

Detailed Explanation

Conduct (cāritra) is of two kinds:

• Sakala-cāritra (complete conduct), followed by monks
• Vikala-cāritra (partial conduct), followed by householders

The eleven stages of householders are:

1. Darśana-pratimā (Right Faith)

Developing pure faith by becoming detached from worldly existence, the body, and sense pleasures, and turning toward the conduct prescribed for a lay follower.

2. Vrata-pratimā (Observance of Vows)

Adopting the five minor vows (aṇuvratas) and seven supplementary vows, free from the three impurities—deceit, falsehood, and desire for reward.

3. Sāmāyika-pratimā

Practicing equanimity by completely renouncing the five sins for a fixed duration and contemplating impermanence, helplessness, the nature of the world, and liberation. A practitioner performs this regularly in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

4. Proṣadha-upavāsa (Fasting Discipline)

Observing fasts on the 8th and 14th lunar days by renouncing all four types of food (solid, liquid, chewable, and lickable).
“Proṣadha” means eating once, and “upavāsa” means complete fasting. During this observance, indulgence, bodily decoration, and violence are also renounced.

5. Sacitta-tyāga (Renunciation of Living Foods)

Giving up vegetables and other foods that contain innumerable subtle life forms (nigoda).

6. Divābhukti (Daytime Eating Only)

Refraining from eating at night and consuming food only during daylight hours.
(Some teachers interpret this as abstaining from sexual activity during the daytime.)

7. Brahmacarya-pratimā (Celibacy)

Renunciation of sensual pleasures, keeping in mind the nature and discipline of the body.

8. Ārambha-tyāga (Renunciation of Harmful Activities)

Abstaining from occupations such as agriculture and trade that involve violence.

9. Parigraha-tyāga (Renunciation of Possessions)

Abandoning attachment to wealth, grains, and material belongings, and cultivating contentment.

10. Anumati-tyāga (Non-approval)

Not giving consent or encouragement to activities involving violence, possession, or worldly engagement.

11. Uddiṣṭa-tyāga (Renunciation of Specially Prepared Food)

Living on alms and renouncing food specially prepared for oneself.

Progress to a higher stage is possible only after fully practicing the previous one. Without fulfilling the earlier stages, advancement to the next is not complete. Thus, these eleven pratimās represent a gradual spiritual ascent for the householder, leading toward purity, detachment, and ultimately liberation.

A Spiritual Journey Through the Path of Liberation

The very title Padmanandi–Pañcaviṁśati reveals its essence — a sacred composition consisting of twenty-five profound spiritual topics, composed by Ācārya Shri Munipadmānandi. This revered Jain text is not merely philosophical; it is a complete spiritual guide leading the soul from worldly confusion to eternal liberation.

Among its many teachings, the first and most expansive section is “Dharmopadeśāmṛta”, consisting of 198 verses, which explain the nature of true Dharma, the qualifications of a true spiritual teacher, and the path that leads to liberation.

Who Is the True Preacher of Dharma?

The text begins by clarifying who is truly qualified to preach Dharma. Only one who has attained omniscience (sarvajñatā) and has become completely free from passions such as anger, pride, deceit, and greed is fit to expound true Dharma.

False speech, the text explains, arises from only two causes:

1. Ignorance, or incomplete knowledge
2. Passions, such as anger, pride, or greed

Anyone who speaks falsely does so because of one of these two. Therefore, only one who is free from both ignorance and passions — a vītarāga, a detached soul — can reveal authentic spiritual truth.

Dharma as the Soul’s Travel Companion

Just as a traveler carries food for a long journey, the soul too needs sustenance for its journey beyond this world. That sustenance is Dharma. Without it, the soul’s journey after death becomes painful and uncertain. Dharma alone makes this transition peaceful and meaningful.

Two Forms of Dharma: Vyavahāra and Niścaya

Dharma is explained from two perspectives:

1. Vyavahāra Dharma (Practical Conduct)

• Householder duties and monastic discipline
• The Three Jewels: Right Faith, Right Knowledge, and Right Conduct

2. Niścaya Dharma (Absolute Reality)

The highest Dharma is that which liberates the soul from the entire cycle of birth and death. It is the state of pure self-awareness, free from thoughts, desires, and bodily identification. In this state, the soul abides in eternal, undisturbed bliss.

While practical Dharma prepares the seeker, pure Dharma alone grants liberation.

Compassion toward living beings is described as the very root of the tree of Dharma. Without compassion, no virtue can survive. Even a being suffering from illness values life above all else—more than wealth, power, or pleasure. This is why non-violence and compassion are supreme.

Without compassion, austerity and renunciation become hollow rituals.

Although monastic life is superior due to complete renunciation, householders also play a vital role. Monks depend upon householders for sustenance, and householders earn spiritual merit by supporting ascetics with reverence.

A true householder:

• Observes the six essential duties

A householder absorbed only in wealth and pleasure, neglecting worship and charity, remains bound in worldly bondage.

All beings desire happiness, yet mistake sensory pleasure for true joy. Such pleasure is temporary and inevitably followed by suffering. True happiness exists only in freedom from agitation, which is attained in liberation.

The Rarity of Human Birth

Human life is exceedingly rare, attained after countless lifetimes. Yet many waste it in ignorance, sensual indulgence, or procrastination, believing there is always time. Death, however, is unpredictable.

Those who use this rare opportunity for spiritual realization are truly wise.

The Glory of Dharma

The text concludes by glorifying Dharma as the sole path to liberation. Dharma alone destroys ignorance, frees the soul from bondage, and leads to eternal peace.
