“If the mode (Paryaya) is entirely distinct from the underlying substance (Paryayi), it leads to a state of nothingness (Shunyata), because neither would have a separate basis to exist independently. Furthermore, conventional expressions such as ‘this is the substance’ and ‘this is its mode’ would become impossible to establish. Therefore, this position is untenable.” || 52 ||
“If the underlying substance (Paryayi) and its mode (Paryaya) are considered to be completely identical, this view too is illogical. This is because merging absolute oneness with multiplicity results in the fallacy of Sankara-dosha (the flaw of mutual intermixture or confusion of identities).” || 53 ||
“If your position is that ‘the underlying substance is one, whereas its modes are many,’ then your initial proposition—that ‘both (substance and mode) share the exact same nature’—stands completely refuted.” || 54 ||
“If both the substance (Dravya) and its modes (Paryaya) are considered absolutely eternal and unchanging (Nitya), then, owing to this unchanging nature, the fruition (Udaya) of virtuous and sinful karmas could never take place. Without the fruition of karmas, the states of attachment (Raga) and aversion (Dvesha)—which cause further bondage—could not arise. In their absence, the bondage of new karmas (Bandha) would be impossible; and when there is no bondage at all, what is to prevent the absolute non-existence of liberation (Moksha)?” || 55 ||
“If, seeing no other solution, you accept both the mode (Paryaya) and its underlying substance (Paryayi) to be momentary, then you would be abandoning your own accepted tenet and establishing the validity of our position.” || 56 ||
“Therefore, O gentle sir! Your viewpoint is merely a fabrication conceived by the base Bauddhas (Buddhists) and is nothing more than an imaginary concept. Do not waste your efforts on it in vain.” || 57 ||
Hearing his words, the wise Vajrayudha began to speak: “O Saugata (Buddhist)! Maintain an elevated, noble mind, adopt a completely neutral and objective perspective (Madhyasthya Bhava), and listen attentively. || 58 ||”
The flaws you have pointed out—based on your false doctrine of absolute momentariness (Kshanikavada), which contradicts the reality of performing actions (Karma) and experiencing their fruits—cannot cause even the slightest harm to the Jains, who drink the nectar of Syadvada (the doctrine of qualified assertion) emerging from the moon-like face of Lord Jinendra.
The Synthesis of Difference and Non-Difference
- From the Perspective of Difference: There is a distinction between the attribute (Dharma) and the substrate (Dharmi)—or the quality (Guna) and the qualified (Guni)—owing to the difference in their names (Samjna), the mental concepts (Buddhi) associated with them, and other distinguishing characteristics.
- From the Perspective of Identity: By relying on the standpoint of unity (Ekatva Naya)—which maintains that a quality and its possessor can never be separated—there is absolute non-difference or oneness between the two.
Explanatory Note (Bhavartha): From the substantial or essential standpoint (Dravyarthika Naya), there is complete non-difference (identity) between a quality and its possessor, or between a mode (Paryaya) and its underlying substance (Paryayi). However, from the practical or empirical standpoint (Vyavahara Naya), there is a clear distinction and multiplicity between them. || 59-61 ||
