“That which is called Tattva-Dharma-Katha (the discourse on the philosophy of truth)—also known simply as Dharma-Katha—is characterized by the following:
- Exposition of Reality: It thoroughly explains and analyzes the nature of living beings (Jiva) and non-living matter (Ajiva).
- Cultivation of Detachment: It inspires well-wishing humans to develop detachment (Vairagya) toward the physical body, the mundane cycle of existence (Samsara), and worldly pleasures (Bhogas).
- Emphasis on Virtues: It highlights with great detail the importance and characteristics of charity (Dana), worship (Puja), penance (Tapa), and moral conduct (Sheela).
- Clarification of Bondage and Liberation: It distinctly describes the nature of bondage (Bandha) and liberation (Moksha) for living beings, along with their respective causes and consequences.
- Logical Discernment: It uses sound reasoning and logic to distinguish between the real (Sat) and the unreal (Asat).
- Exaltation of Compassion: It profoundly describes compassion (Daya), which protects and benefits living beings just like a loving mother.
- Path to Ultimate Freedom: By listening to it, living beings are inspired to renounce all worldly possessions and attachments (Parigraha) to ultimately attain liberation (Moksha).”11–14
“In this manner, the distinct characteristics of the speaker (Vakta), the listener (Shrota), and the religious discourse (Dharma-Katha) have been described. Moving forward from here, I shall now narrate the detailed and expansive life story (Charitra) of Lord Shantinatha.”15
“Thereafter—there exists a highly desirable and cherished land named Bharata (Bharata Kshetra). It is situated right between the Lavana Samudra (the Salt Ocean) and the Himavan Mountain, and is adorned with six grand divisions (Khandas).
This land enhances the beauty of Jambudvipa—resembling the radiant face of King Jambudvipa himself—who reigns as the master of all continents, and whose splendid, magnificent garments are formed by the deep blue waters of the Salt Ocean.”16 – 17
“In that region (Bharata Kshetra), one can attain the ten types of worldly pleasures enjoyed by a Chakravarti (universal monarch)—which rival the enjoyments born in the Bhogabhumi (the land of continuous enjoyment)—as well as the supreme grandeur of the Tirthankaras, and even ultimate liberation (Siddhi-Mukti) which manifests upon destroying the non-destructive (Aghatiya) karmas. For this reason, wise scholars consider this land to be even superior to heaven (Svargaloka).
Furthermore, just like in the Airavata region, this land undergoes continuous transformation through the cyclic rise (Utsarpini) and fall (Avasarpini) of eras.”18 – 19
“Right in the middle of that region shines Mount Vijayardha, stretching from east to west and standing tall as it divides Bharata Kshetra into two equal halves. With its magnificent peaks, it appears as though it were the personification of a vast, radiant mass of pure glory and fame.”20
“Alternatively, made entirely of silver, that Mount Vijayardha looks so magnificent that it appears as if the Earth, personified as a lady who has gained immense satisfaction from conquering the heavenly realm, has burst into a concentrated, visible form of brilliant laughter.”21
