खण्डेलवाल दिगम्बर जैन समाज 84 गोत्रो में विभाजित है। इन गोत्रों का इतिहास भी उतना ही रोमांचक है जितनी उसकी उत्पत्ति की घटना है। लेकिन इतना अवश्य है कि प्रारम्भ से ही समाज मे गोत्रों को अत्यधिक लोकप्रियता प्राप्त रही इसीलिये खण्डेलवाल जैन बन्धु अपने नाम के आगे गोत्रों का उपयोग करते रहे है। इन्होने जैन लिखने के स्थान पर गोत्र लिखने को अधिक वरीयता दी ।

The Khandelwal Digambar Jain community is divided into 84 gotras. The history of these gotras is as fascinating as the story of their origin. From the beginning, gotras have held significant popularity in society, which is why Khandelwal Jains have continued to use their gotra names as part of their identity. Instead of writing “Jain,” they preferred to use their gotra names.

इसका एक कारण यह भी रहा कि जयपुर, अजमेर, इन्दौर जैसे नगरो मे खण्डेलवालों के हजारो परिवार मिलते है और उनमे विभिन्न गोत्र वाले श्रावक रहते है इसलिए एक-दूसरे की पहचान के लिये इस समाज में गोत्रों का उपयोग होने लगा । इसके अतिरिक्त समाज मे गोत्रो की अधिकता भी एक कारण है। ये आसानी से गोत्रो का उपयोग करने लगे और उसमे उनको कुछ भी कठिनाई प्रतीत नहीं हुई ।

One reason for this preference is that in cities like Jaipur, Ajmer, and Indore, where thousands of Khandelwal families reside, members from various gotras live together. To distinguish themselves, they started using their gotras for identification. Additionally, the large number of gotras within the community made their use more convenient, and people found no difficulty in adopting them.

इन 84 गोत्रो में वर्तमान में कितने गोत्र वाले परिवार मिलते हैं इसकी निश्चित संख्या बतलाना तो कठिन है फिर भी 25-30 गोत्रो के परिवार तो नहीं मिलते है। जयपुर एवं इन्दौर जैसे नगर जो खण्डेलवाल समाज के प्रमुख केन्द्र हैं जहाँ हजारों की संख्या में खण्डेलवाल जैन परिवार रहते हैं वहाँ भी सभी गोत्रो के परिवार नही मिलते। इन 84 गोत्रो के अतिरिक्त किसी-किसी गुटके में यह संख्या 88 तक पहुंच गई है तथा कुछ प्रशस्तियों मे नाम भौर खण्डेलवाल के भंग से कुछ है लेकिन जिनका नाम 84 गोत्रो में नही मिलता। इसलिए यह भी सम्भव है कि प्रारम्म मे तो 84 गोत्र ही रहे होंगे लेकिन बाद में उनकी संख्या में वृद्धि होती गई हो । इन सब तथ्यों पर हम भागे विचार करेंगे ।

It is difficult to determine the exact number of gotras that still exist within the community today. However, around 25-30 gotras are no longer found. Even in major centers of the Khandelwal community, such as Jaipur and Indore, not all gotras are represented. Some sources mention the number of gotras as 88, while others list additional names that do not appear in the original 84 gotras. This suggests that while there were initially 84 gotras, their number may have increased over time.

ऐसे 14 गोत्रों के नाम और मिले हैं जो खण्डेलवाल जैन समाज के कभी गोत्र थे तथा उनमें से कुछ आज भी मिलते हैं। 84 गोत्रों के नव दीक्षित खण्डेलवाल जैनों की पहिचान, सामाजिक सम्बन्ध, विवाह भादि की दृष्टि से आचार्य जिनसेन ने गाँवो के नामों से गोत्रो की रचना की। लेनिन उनके वंश, कुल एवं कुल देवी के नामो मे कोई परिवर्तन नहीं किया गया। इससे उनका मूल स्वरूप भी बचा रहा और जैन धर्म में दीक्षित होने के पश्चात् अपने वश एवं कुल के नाम से उनकी पहिचान मी बनी रही । आचार्य जिनसेन ने गोत्रो की रचना करके उनके परिवार की सस्कृति की रक्षा करने में एक और पहिच न बढ़ा दी गयी जिसने कालान्तर मे परिवार की पहिचान का मुख्य रूप धारण कर लिया ।

Historical records also indicate 14 additional gotras that were once part of the Khandelwal Jain community, some of which still exist today. Acharya Jinsen identified gotras based on village names to establish a system of identification for newly initiated Khandelwal Jains, facilitating social connections and marriages. However, he did not alter their ancestral lineage, clan, or deity names, ensuring that their original identity remained intact even after adopting Jainism. This approach helped preserve family traditions while reinforcing their Jain identity.

खण्डेला नगर सहित खण्डेलगिरि के राज्य में 84 सामन्ती गाँव थे और उनके इतने ही सामन्त थे लेकिन दो गाँवों में जागीरदार नहीं थे। अब यह प्रश्न है कि क्या चौरासी गोत्रो की स्थापना एक ही साथ हुई अथवा इसमे कुछ वर्ष लगे । इसमें भी इतिहास लेखको के दो मत है।

The state of Khandela, including Khandelgiri, comprised 84 feudal villages, each governed by a feudal lord, except for two villages that lacked landlords. A key question arises: Were the 84 gotras established simultaneously, or did it take several years? Historians hold differing opinions on this matter.

सबसे प्राचीन इतिहास (सम्बत् 1636) में केवल गोत्रों की उत्पत्ति का विवरण दिया है लेकिन इसका प्रारम्भिक इतिहास नंही दिया है। प्रथम वे इतिहास लेखक है जिन्होने 84 गोत्रो की स्थापना एक साथ हुई थी ऐसा लिखा है। इसके अनुमार 82 गोत्रो की स्थापना उनके गाँवों के नामो के आधार पर की गई तथा दो गोत्र स्वर्णकारों पर पीछी रख दिये जाने के कारण उनको भी खण्डेलवाल जाति में सम्मिलित करके उनका बज गोत्र स्थापित किया गया ।

The earliest historical records (dating back to Samvat 1636) describe the origins of the gotras but do not provide detailed accounts of their early history. Some historians believe that all 84 gotras were established at once. According to this perspective, 82 gotras were named after villages, while two were added based on an incident involving goldsmiths, who were later included in the Khandelwal caste.

“अर वे समै गुढा की चौकी देवा लगा जदि राजा बियासी (82) गाँव का श्राया था तो वे गाँव-गाँव के नामि गोत थाप्या। गोत 82 तो छत्री स्यु हुवा अर गोत 2 सुनार म्यो हुवा। ज्यो को व्योगे । मु मोले पोछी दीइनो मो तो दोहनी । अब मोको गोत बञ्च हया थाप्या। हाथ माहै हथोडो देख्यो जम्यो । जदि राजा कहयो जु ऐ दोन्यो व्याही छं। गोत तो एक ही थाप्यो छै। जदि दिहाड़ी पूछी। जी के ग्रामणि दिहाडी छी सु तो ग्रामण्या बज बहाया श्रर ज्यो के मोहण दिहाडी छी मी नो मोहष्या बज कहाया। ई माति गोत 84 हुवा। जाति खण्डेलवाल खण्डेला स्यु हुवा । वश 24 दिहाडी 24 ज्या का गोत 84 हुवा ।”

A historical passage describes how a king granted 82 villages and named the gotras accordingly. The remaining two gotras were formed from goldsmiths after a symbolic event involving the placement of a monk’s whisk broom (peachhi). The passage suggests that the establishment of these gotras was based on a mix of territorial and occupational factors, with the community ultimately taking the name “Khandelwal” after the region of Khandela.

सिधाई जिनसेन के प्रपराजित मुनि प्राय ।

राज कुली चौबीस घरि प्रतियोध्या फुनि पाय ।

सवत एक सौ एक (101) सर्म, नगर खडेले न्याय ।

चौरासी धावक कुल।, जनधर्म उपजाय ॥

भावबा सुबी 13 बीतवार खण्डेलवाल परप्या ॥

Additionally, historical verses indicate that the 84 gotras originated from the establishment of Jain Dharma in Khandela, with the lineage expanding over time.

हमारे मत के अनुसार भी 84 गोत्रों की स्थापना एक साथ न होकर शनैः शने हुई होगी । इसलिये राज दरबार में 2 स्वर्णकारो का आना, आचार्य जिनसेन द्वारा उनके सिर पर पिच्छी फेर देना तथा उन्हें बज गोत्र देना यह सब निरी- कल्पना मात्र है इसमे सत्य का अंश नही है।

According to our belief, the establishment of 84 Gotras did not happen all at once but gradually over time. Therefore, the arrival of two goldsmiths in the royal court, Acharya Jinsen passing a peacock feather over their heads, and granting them the Baj Gotra—these are all mere fabrications with no element of truth in them.

Thus, the formation of the Khandelwal Digambar Jain gotras is a complex and evolving historical process that reflects the social, cultural, and religious dynamics of the community.
