Jacob’s Office, 1884–1902: Building Jaipur’s Architectural Legacy

By the mid-1880s, Colonel Samuel Swinton Jacob had moved far beyond his earlier duties in roads and irrigation. With the construction of the Albert Hall Museum, his office was transformed into Jaipur’s de facto architectural powerhouse. Between 1884 and his retirement in 1902, Jacob’s team would take on a flood of commissions that reshaped not only Jaipur, but also parts of Rajputana and even British India.

Expanding the Office

The Albert Hall project required more hands, more skills, and more coordination. In 1884, Jacob’s office included:

• Assistant Engineers: Ghasi Ram and Rup Chand
• Overseers: nine in total, including Tujumul Hoosein
• Other staff: seven, among them Chiman Lal, who would later emerge as one of Jaipur’s leading architects.

This team allowed Jacob’s office to expand its reach and sustain a growing stream of architectural work over the next two decades.

Before Albert Hall: Modest Beginnings

In the 1870s, under Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh, Jacob’s role was still limited. Most large architectural projects went to freelance designers like de Fabeck.

• Jacob’s own designs included All Saints’ Church (1873–76), a small Anglican chapel in early English Gothic style—grim and austere, dictated more by denomination than context.
• Major works like the Mayo Hospital and Jaipur’s boarding house at Mayo College, Ajmer were entrusted to outsiders.

Thus, until the 1880s, Jacob’s office played only a supporting role in Jaipur’s architectural story.

A Turning Point: Maharaja Madho Singh and New Responsibilities

Everything changed in 1880, with the accession of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II. Dissatisfied with de Fabeck’s museum design, the new Maharaja turned to Jacob, and the Albert Hall became the defining commission of his career.

By 1883, Jacob’s team was already working inside the Chandra Mahal of the City Palace—traditionally the domain of the Raj Imarat (King’s Buildings Department). This marked a subtle but significant shift: Jacob’s office was encroaching on the territory of traditional state architects.

The Cenotaph of Ram Singh: Blending Past and Present

The following year, Jacob’s office produced something even more remarkable: the chhatri (cenotaph) of Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh, who had died in 1880.

• Following Rajput custom, the Maharaja’s ashes were interred at Gaitor, just outside Jaipur’s northern walls.
• Jacob’s office submitted three designs, each accompanied by a plaster model.
• The chosen design was a replica of the cenotaph of Sawai Jai Singh, Jaipur’s founder.

To honor Ram Singh, the platform of Jai Singh’s chhatri was doubled in size, placing the two cenotaphs side by side in symmetrical composition.

The symbolism was deliberate: by aligning Ram Singh visually with Jaipur’s founder, the design enshrined his reputation as a modernizer and reformer. Jacob himself praised the Maharaja in glowing terms:

“Surrounded as he was by many influences, some at least of which were opposed to all progress, it reflects immortal credit on his name, that he should have identified himself so consistently with the progress of civilization.”

The irony, of course, is striking. A ruler celebrated for his progressive spirit was memorialized with a cenotaph modeled on a form over a century old. But perhaps this was the genius of Jacob’s method: using architectural tradition as a vessel for new political narratives.

A New Architectural Phase

From this point onward, Jacob’s office became the hub of Jaipur’s architectural production, exporting designs and expertise far beyond the city’s walls. What began as a department of irrigation and roads had, by the late 19th century, grown into one of the most influential architectural studios in India.

And yet, as we will see, the ideas developed at the Albert Hall—Western planning structures draped in Indian detail—continued to challenge and ultimately displace Jaipur’s own vastu vidya traditions.

Jacob’s office was more than a workplace; it was a laboratory where colonial, princely, and indigenous forces collided in stone. The cenotaph at Gaitor shows just how layered and complex those collisions could be.
