Udaypur or Mewar is generally admitted to be the first and oldest of the Rajput States. The present capital of this name was founded by Udayasingh after the sack of Chitor by the Emperor Akbar, A.D. 1568. The Suraj Pol, or Sun Gate, is one of the main gateways.
Surajpol Gate is a prominent landmark in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The name translates to “Sun Gate”. It was built in the 18th century by Maharana Sangram Singh II, the ruler of the Mewar Kingdom. The gate was designed to provide visitors with a grand and majestic welcome.
Udaipur has 12 gates, four of which are on the main roads with double-gated entries. The gates were built for security after Aurangzeb’s attack in February 1680.
It is situated in the heart of the city, just 0.5 km away from the Udaipur City Bus Depot and 1 km from Udaipur City railway station. Surajpole junction is approached from Delhi Gate and connects with Udiapole Circle, which is around 530 m away. It is a center point for many adjoining markets, namely Bapu Bazar, Dhaan Mandi, Kalaji Goraji, Gulab Bagh, Ziniret ka Chowk etc. This area has a mixed land use, having elements of residential, commercial and institutional use
Chaksu is situated about 25 miles south of the town of Jaiput. Originally it was surrounded by a wall and ditch, which are now destroyed. It contains a few old remains, and one or two modern houses of a good type, built by wealthy natives.
