Jaipur’s Artistic Resurgence: From the 1883 Exhibition to the Albert Hall Museum

The late 19th century marked a turning point in the artistic and cultural revival of Jaipur. A landmark event in this movement was the Jaipur Exhibition of 1883, which showcased the products of the School of Art alongside recent works from across India.

Inspired by the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, this event followed a colonial model, yet was the first major exhibition of its kind in an Indian princely state. Interestingly, it coincided with the Calcutta International Exhibition of 1883–84, signaling India’s growing participation in global conversations on art and industry.

The Vision of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II

The young ruler, Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II (r.1880–1923), played a pivotal role in this cultural revival. In 1884, he began assembling objects that were first displayed in a small improvised museum. The completion of the Naya Mahal (a neoclassical palace building designed by Samuel Swinton Jacob) at Jaleb Chowk provided the perfect opportunity to relocate these collections. For two months, the palace courtyard bordering Sireh Deori Bazaar was transformed into a vibrant exhibition space.

Adding grandeur, neighboring Maharajas loaned rare objects, making it a truly regional showcase.

Thomas Holbein Hendley and the Purpose of the Exhibition

The event’s organizer, Dr. Thomas Holbein Hendley, saw the exhibition not merely as entertainment but as a learning platform for artisans. His aim was to present “the best works of India” to local craftsmen, encouraging them to preserve traditional skills rather than imitate Western designs.

Paradoxically, while Hendley’s broader role in Jaipur was to promote modernization—including Western medicine—he believed that progress in design lay in resisting Westernization. Hence, while most exhibits highlighted India’s finest artistry, a few deliberately showcased the negative impact of Western influence as cautionary examples.

Recognition and Global Reach

The exhibition drew over a quarter of a million visitors and culminated in a magnificent four-volume catalog, prepared by Hendley and sponsored by the Maharaja. This work not only documented the exhibition’s treasures but also reproduced rare paintings from the Razmnama, the Persian Mahabharata commissioned by Emperor Akbar and later acquired by Jaipur’s Sawai Jai Singh.

On this strong foundation, Jaipur emerged as a major contributor to the London Colonial and Indian Exhibition of 1886. Crafts such as stonework, pottery, jewellery, enamelling, lacquerware, textiles, and even anthropological and mythological artifacts showcased Jaipur’s artistic diversity to the world.

Towards a Permanent Institution – The Albert Hall Museum

The success of these exhibitions naturally led to the vision of a permanent public museum. Interestingly, the idea dated back to 1876, during Maharaja Ram Singh’s reign, when the Prince of Wales laid the foundation stone of the Albert Hall Museum during his visit to Jaipur.

Initially, the project faced setbacks—no clear design or content plan existed, and a competition for architectural designs in 1877 yielded unsatisfactory results. The Maharaja then turned to architect Colonel de Fabeck, who had successfully designed the Mayo Hospital in Jaipur and the boarding house at Mayo College in Ajmer. However, de Fabeck’s involvement was short-lived, and after delays—including the death of Maharaja Ram Singh in 1880—the project was handed over to Samuel Swinton Jacob.

Legacy

What began with the Jaipur Exhibition of 1883 eventually culminated in the establishment of the Albert Hall Museum, today one of the most iconic cultural institutions in Rajasthan. The exhibitions not only revived local crafts but also positioned Jaipur as a global center of artistic excellence during the late 19th century.
