The Chowkris – The Wards of Jaipur

Just as Jaipur’s wide avenues divide the city into chowkris (wards), the chowkris themselves are further subdivided into mohallas—smaller neighbourhoods created by networks of narrower streets.

The Grid of Streets

Early planners intended a clear hierarchy of streets:

• Main streets around 100–111 feet wide (≈ 33 m),
• Secondary roads at half that width,
• Tertiary roads at a quarter width.

Although this system was not implemented with perfect mathematical precision, the result was a highly structured city where mobility and order were balanced with social organization.

The Mohalla System

The mohalla was not merely a geographical unit; it was a social cell. Rooted in shastric principles of settlement, each mohalla was typically associated with a jati (caste or profession).

At the smallest scale was the haveli—a courtyard house accommodating extended families and their retainers. Clusters of such havelis formed a mohalla, where people bound by profession or community ties lived together. The mohalla thus functioned as a semi-private domain: its members maintained close social and economic bonds, and outsiders’ entry could be restricted to preserve privacy and community identity.

Several mohallas aggregated together to make up a chowkri, ensuring that Jaipur’s social and architectural hierarchy worked hand in hand.

Social and Occupational Distribution

The city’s planners aligned Jaipur’s settlement pattern with ancient prescriptions of social order. While real-life adjustments were inevitable, evidence of occupational clustering is still visible:

• Brahmapuri – A Brahmin quarter outside the northern city wall, consistent with the direction reserved for Brahmins in shastric texts.
• Johari Bazaar – Traditional marketplace for jewels, fine textiles, and costly goods.
• Kishanpol Bazaar – Famous for Jaipur’s vibrant bandhani (tie-and-dye) fabrics.
• Maniharon ka Rasta – Home of artisans making lac bangles, still a hallmark of Jaipur’s crafts.
• Khajanewalon ka Rasta – Quarter of sculptors crafting idols (murtis) of deities.
• Jhalaniyon ka Rasta – Known for dealers in ground spices.
• Thatheron ka Rasta – Dwellings of brass and metalworkers.
• Tripolia Bazaar – Traditional sellers of kitchen utensils.
• Ramchandraji Chowkri – Once home to palace officials, ministers, and state administrators, befitting its placement in the eastern sector associated with Kshatriyas.

Even today, wandering through Jaipur’s bazaars feels like stepping back into its social blueprint—each lane retains echoes of its occupational identity. The mohalla system ensured not only efficiency of trade and craft specialization but also community cohesion, creating self-contained neighbourhoods that still shape Jaipur’s charm.

The mohallas remind us that Jaipur was never only about palaces and grand avenues. Its soul was always in its people—the jewellers, weavers, sculptors, metalworkers, and merchants who infused every chowkri and mohalla with life.
