खण्डेलवाल दिगम्बर जैन समाज के 84 गोत्रों में साह गोत्र शाही गोत्र है। यह खण्डेला के महाराजा खण्डेलगिरि का गोत्र है जो उन्हें जैन धर्म में दीक्षित करने तथा अंहिसा धर्म के परिपालन की प्रतिज्ञा लेने के पश्चात् दिया गया था । उन्हें खण्डेलवाल जैन जाति का प्रथम महापुरुष होने तथा साह गोत्रीय कहलाने का सौभाग्य प्राप्त हुआ । वे चौहाण राजपूत थे। सोम उनका वंश या । खण्डेला उनका नगर एवं चक्रेश्वरी देवी उनकी कुल देवी थी। उनको विक्रम सम्वत् 102 में दीक्षित किया गया ।

साह गोत्र का पर्याप्त इतिहास मिलता है। सबसे प्राचीन उल्लेख सम्बत् 112 का मिलता है जब खण्डेला नगर के श्रीपाल साह ने पंच कल्याणक प्रतिष्ठा का आयोजन किया। इसी सम्बत् का एक लेख सावर (राज.) की पहाडी पर अकित है। इसके पश्चात् खंडेला नगर में ही साह खडगसिंह ने पंच कल्याणक प्रतिष्ठा करवायी थी जिसका उल्लेख प्रतिष्ठा पाण्डुलिपियों में मिलता है। सम्बत् 1052 में माह मुदी 13 के दिन फलु साह ने घटयाली में पार्श्वनाथ स्वामी की प्रतिमा की विधिवत् प्रतिष्ठा सम्पन्न करायी। राजोर (हाड़ौती) में भैसों साह हुए जिन्होने सम्बत् 1112 में आबू में शिखरबन्द मन्दिर बनवाये थे। ग्वालियर की मट्टारकीय गादी पर सवत् 1264 में बसन्तकीर्ति मट्टारक हुए थे वे साह गोत्रीय श्रावक थे। (खण्डेलवाल सरावगियों के जागा के रिकार्ड के अनुसार) सम्बत् 1545 में परबत साह द्वारा परबतसर नगर बसाने का उल्लेख मिलता है। इसके पश्चात् संवत् 1582 से लेकर संवत् 1891 तक के पच्चीस से अधिक लेख मिलते है जिनमे साह गोत्रीय श्रावको द्वारा सम्पन्न पंच कल्याणक प्रतिष्ठा, पाण्डुलिपियों का लेखन एव उनको मट्टारको तथा उनके शिष्यों को मेंट आदि का विस्तृत वर्णन मिलता है। जयपुर में साहू गोत्र में पं० दीपचन्द साह, पं० बख्तराम साह, पं० सेवाराम साह जैसे विद्वान हुए जिन्होंने जैन साहित्य की महान् सेवा की थी।

जयपुर के साह गोत्री श्री गेन्दीलाल जी ने अपनी पूरी वंशावली प्रकाशित की है उनमें पुराने सरकारी रेकार्ड के प्राधार पर निम्न लेख दिया हुआा है।

“खण्डेले जैनी हुआ तीको अहवाल सम्बत् 110 के साल खडेलगिरि चौहारण जैनी हुवा जिनसेनाचार्य जी का उपदेश सू राजा को गोत्र साहु कहायो पीछे सवत् 782 की साल खण्डेलो छुट्यो अमैराम जी हीरानन्द जी जात्रा गिरनार जी रिखबदेव जी की कर चीत्तौड रावल रतनसी सू मिल्या। गाव इजारे किया। पीछे सम्वत् 992 के माल ऊंठा मू रायमल जी ऊठ्या सो घटाली आया। कीलणदी बालणदेव मोलम्बी घटाली का ठाकुर त्यासु गाव इजारे लिया स 1656 की माल छाजू साहजी घटयाली मू चाटसू आया अर मानसिंह में मिला ।

प्रथम साह उडहण जी ताको बेटो दूल्ह जी तीको बेटो लाखो तीको खीवमी तीको काल्हा जी तीको बेटो सरवण तीको बेटो बोपतजी तीको बेटो छाजु साह घटावली सू विसर कियो। ती पाछे महाराजधिराज श्री मार्नासह जी बुलाया तदि महाराजजी से मिल्यो ती परि म्हेला कोट को कस्बा चाकसू को काढी कोटडी बघाय बास करायो और जमीन इनाम में बीघा 500 बवमी अर सो मृरातिय वकस्यो । उक्त रेकार्ड से यह स्पष्ट है कि विक्रमीय द्वितीय शताब्दी में खण्डला नगर के राजा ने जैन धर्म स्वीकार किया। माह परिवार सवत् 782 तक खण्डेला में ही रहा फिर वहाँ में चित्तोड, घटियाली रहने के पश्चात् उसी परिवार के छाजू माह ने सम्वत् 1656 में श्रमेर के महाराज मामिह जी में चाकसू में भेट की इसके पश्चात् तो वर्तमान पीढ़ी तक पूरे साह परिवार की वशावली उपलब्ध होती है ।

उक्त लेख में मम्वत् 110 में माह गोत्र की स्थापना का उल्लेख मिलता है जो सही प्रतीत नहीं होता क्योकि सवत् 110 में तो आचार्य जिनमेन जीवित भी नहीं थे तथा साह गोत्र राजा खण्डेलगिरि को दिया हुआा गोत्र है इसलिए यह सम्बत् 102 होना चाहिए। जबकि अन्य पा‌लिपियो में सम्बत् 101 लिखा हुआ है । लेकिन घटियाली में सम्वत् 992 में जो ग्राने का जलनेख मिलता है वह सवत् 1052 के फुलु माह के लेम्ब से मेल खाता है। घटियाली में पहिले माह गोत्रीय आावको के 350 घर थे। “साह घटियाली माखला कोडीकार पचास” जैसी कुछ लोकोक्तियाँ भी मिलती है।

साह गोत्र इतना लोकप्रिय हुआ कि दूसरे गोत्र बाले भी अपने नाम के पूर्व साह शब्द लगाने लगे तथा साह, साहू शब्द प्रतिष्ठा एवं समृद्धि का सूचक बन गया ।

Among the 84 gotras of the Khandelwal Digambar Jain community, the Sah gotra is considered a royal gotra. It originates from Maharaja Khandelgiri of Khandela, who received this gotra upon his initiation into Jainism and after taking a vow to follow the path of non-violence. He was honored as the first great figure of the Khandelwal Jain lineage and was given the title of Sah Gotriya. He was a Chauhan Rajput, belonging to the Som dynasty. Khandela was his city, and Goddess Chakreshwari was his family deity. He was initiated into Jainism in Vikram Samvat 102.

There is extensive historical evidence regarding the Sah gotra. The earliest known reference dates back to Samvat 112 when Shripal Sah of Khandela organized a Panch Kalyanak Pratishtha ceremony. An inscription from the same period is found on a hill in Sawar (Rajasthan). Later, in Khandela itself, Sah Khadagsingh conducted another Panch Kalyanak Pratishtha, as recorded in Pratishtha manuscripts. In Samvat 1052, on the 13th day of Mahamudi, Phalu Sah performed a formal consecration of Lord Parshvanath’s idol in Ghatiyali. In Rajor (Hadoti), Bheso Sah built a Shikharband Jain temple in Abu in Samvat 1112.

In Samvat 1264, Basantkirti Mattaraka, a Sah gotra Jain, occupied the Mattaraka seat in Gwalior. According to records of the Khandelwal Saravagis, in Samvat 1545, Parbat Sah established the town of Parbatsar. From Samvat 1582 to 1891, more than twenty-five inscriptions mention Sah gotra Jains organizing Panch Kalyanak Pratishthas, writing manuscripts, and offering them to Mattarakas and their disciples.

In Jaipur, Sah gotra scholars such as Pandit Deepchand Sah, Pandit Bakhtaram Sah, and Pandit Sewaram Sah made significant contributions to Jain literature.

Jaipur’s Sah gotri, Shri Gendilal Ji, published a complete genealogy of his lineage, which includes the following historical record based on old government documents:

*”The historical records of Khandelwal Jains indicate that in Samvat 110, Khandelgiri Chauhan became a Jain under the guidance of Acharya Jinsenacharya, and he was given the gotra name ‘Sahu.’ Later, in Samvat 782, the Khandelwal family left Khandela. Ameram Ji and Hiranand Ji traveled to Girnar and Rishabhdev and met Rawal Ratansi of Chittor. They obtained village estates. Subsequently, in Samvat 992, Untha Mu Raymal Ji migrated to Ghatiyali, and later, Kilandev and Balanddev Molambi of Ghatiyali acquired village estates. In Samvat 1656, Chhaju Sah moved from Ghatiyali to Chatsu and allied with Maharaja Man Singh.

The first Sah was Udhan Ji, whose son was Dulha Ji, followed by Lakha Ji, Khivmi Ji, Kalha Ji, Sarvan Ji, Bopat Ji, and finally Chhaju Sah, who left Ghatiyali. Maharaja Man Singh summoned him, and he settled in Chatsu, establishing a town with a fort and a village called Kotdi Bagai. The king granted him 500 bighas of land as a tax-free estate.”*

This record clearly indicates that in the second century of the Vikram era, the king of Khandela accepted Jainism. The Mah family remained in Khandela until Samvat 782 and later migrated to Chittor and Ghatiyali before Chhaju Mah met the Jaipur Maharaja in Samvat 1656. From then onwards, the entire Sah family’s genealogy is well-documented.

The text mentions the establishment of the Mah gotra in Samvat 110, but this seems incorrect, as Acharya Jinmen was not alive at that time. Since the Sah gotra was given to King Khandelgiri, the correct date should be Samvat 102, although some manuscripts mention Samvat 101. However, the record of migration in Ghatiyali in Samvat 992 matches the inscription of Phalu Mah from Samvat 1052. Earlier, there were 350 households of Mah gotra Jains in Ghatiyali, and local sayings such as “Sah Ghatiyali Makla Kodikar Pachas” indicate the prominence of this gotra.

The popularity of the Sah gotra grew to the extent that individuals from other gotras began adopting the title ‘Sah’ before their names. Over time, the words ‘Sah’ and ‘Sahu’ became symbols of prestige and prosperity.
